GEORGIA DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE GARY W. BLACK, COMMISSIONER WEDNESDAY, APRIL 21, 2021 VOL. 104, NO. 8 COPYRIGHT 2021
Commissioner's Column: What are you planting this year?
By Gary W. Black
10 0 t1h9A17nniv2e0r1s7aryGeorgia Agriculture Commissioner Spring has sprung all over Harmony Grove Farms. Pollen and the final exhale of winter have passed (let's pray). Now it's time to get down to serious business. What are you planting this year? But, before I talk plant life, let me tell you about my chickens.
One silver lining from COVID on our farm lies in last year's conversion and
extension of one part of a barn now known as the Harmony Grove Farms layer
operation. It's home to 30 Novagen Brown eight-week-old biddies. Everyone is
healthy (great chicks bought from Bob's Biddies in Nashville). We anticipate
the great egg drop to begin in late June. If my calculations are correct, I've got
to find a home for roughly 9,000 eggs in the coming months. Neighbors and
Sunday School class members have been properly notified not to buy any eggs
for a while.
Now to the garden.
I'm probably going overboard. This year's garden is for us large. Yes, it
is overboard. I have a new sweet corn patch. Twelve Brussels sprouts plants are
taking shape. In two weeks, I'll have Romaine lettuce. White half-runner green
beans, yellow squash, zucchini, pickling cucumbers, cantaloupe, and watermelon
are sitting on go. Okra and peas will come a little later. I don't know how many
tomato and pepper plants there will be, but again I think it will be overboard.
Zinnias and sunflowers will complete the 2021 portfolio, I think. No, earlier I
forgot to add butternut squash and speckled butter beans.
What are you planting this year? Are you sticking to Better Boys and that's
all? Heirlooms? Whatever the choice, I just hope you'll plant something.
What if we all went a little overboard this year? For certain, our farm supply,
seed, greenhouse, and plant companies would be grateful. Your neighbors and
Sunday School class members would too.
Seeds hold the promise of food. Sharing the fruit of your labor carries with
it the intrinsic value of good will. Why don't we all commit to going overboard
My neighbor Charles Westmoreland helping me go overboard. (Gary W. Black/GDA)

It's official!
Georgia Gov. Brian P. Kemp signed SB 222 into law April 9, making the pecan Georgia's Official State Nut. The bill, written by Sen. Carden Summers, R-Cordele, was celebrated by Agriculture Commissioner Gary W. Black and several members of the General Assembly at a signing ceremony hosted by Ellis Brothers Pecans in Vienna. The Georgia Pecan Growers Association presented Kemp and Black with a pair of pecan paintings commissioned from artist Rhonda Griffin of Adel. (Andy Harrison/GDA)

Larry For The Country: Just an old country boy
By Larry Walker
lwalker@whgmlaw.com
I was born at the Middle Georgia Hospital in Macon on March 9, 1942. My mother, Hilda Gray Walker, must have told me at least a dozen times that "we stayed at the hospital about ten days and were taken home to Perry in an ambulance."
I must've been causing trouble the day I was born. Mama, I'm sorry, and I want to thank you for all you did for me during the 99 plus years you were on God's earth. You also used to tell me that the "peach trees were in full bloom and were beautiful." I always think of this when I'm on U.S. Highway 41 in Houston County in March and see those beautiful fields of peach trees in full bloom. I also want to thank you for taking me home to Perry. There is no place in the world I had rather have been for all my life. I've told folks I feel like I "won the lottery" the day I was born. I had a mother and daddy who loved me and wanted the best for me. And, I had four grandparents that I loved dearly and with whom I spent lots of time as a child and young man. I loved them, they loved me. I wish every child could be so fortunate. If so, the world would be a much better place. My Walker grandparents lived in the north part of Washington County, at the confluence of dirt Centralia Rachels and Sparta-Davisboro roads. At least they were both dirt roads un-
til probably the 1990s and Centralia Rachels still is. I liked it that way both being dirt and was a little sad when Sparta-Davisboro was paved. I have good memories of toady frog houses made with wet dirt packed on bare feet, pebbles that washed up out of the dirt when it rained, picking blackberries and maypops on the sides of those two roads, and wading in the rain-filled ditches.
Grandma and Papa were dirt farmers. Papa had four mules which he and his two helpers, Amos and Solomon, hitched up for plowing and planting and to pull the wagon. There is more I intend to write in the future about the mules (for whom I felt sorry); the plowing and planting and the mule-pulled wagons; Solomon and Amos, as well as what Grandma and Papa had to do and did in a typical day; my love for Amos and Solomon, and the mules, and how they (and I) lived back in the those hard but satisfying times; also, about the lessons I learned from my exposure to what farm people had to do and what farm life used to be like.
And, then I will write about my Gray Grandparents, and what I learned and the love I had for them. Grandbuddy was born in Danville, Va., and Granny was born in Danville, Ind. They married in Danville, Ind., and the day they married they took a train to Los Angeles (Hollywood). They also homesteaded in Tombstone, Ariz. Fortunately, for me, they ended up in Perry, else I never would have been here. It's a good story about two fine people that I hope you will find interesting.
Kinda' overriding all of this is the effect that agriculture has had on our family. It has marked us and I am proud for
it. I appreciate the opportunity of sharing this with you. Papa and Grandma farmed. Daddy taught Ag at Perry High School and Lanier High School and started the FFA (Future Farmers of America) at both schools. Daddy and Grandbuddy were together in the farm equipment business and the farm supply business. Daddy farmed in Houston County. I showed steers ("Fat Cattle Shows"), packed peaches and picked cotton. Larry III, our oldest son, won the State Hog Show and the next year, Wendy, our daughter, won it! Larry III also ran a tractor dealership in Dublin, and he is now Chairman of the Ag Committee in the Georgia State Senate. There is more, but this is enough to let you know that Ag has marked the Walker family, including me.
Indeed, this is Larry from and for the country and I'm proud of it. I can hardly wait until the next few months to share more with you: Grandbuddy, a cameraman at Universal studios in the early
1900s; Papa plowing his mules into his 70s; Daddy as an Ag teacher; My wife, Janice, living on a farm and in a house that had no

Mercer Medical Moment: New dietary recommendations for your baby
By Tanner Fincher Mercer University School of Medicine Third-year MD Student
As a parent or caregiver, you may have many questions regarding your baby's diet. For example, what foods best meet my baby's dietary needs, when can my baby be introduced to solid foods, are there certain foods that my baby should or should not be introduced to and what drinks are best at certain ages?
An excellent resource that addresses each of these questions is the 2020-2025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans published by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Department of Health and Human Services. For the first time since 1985, the DGA provides dietary recommendations for children under the age of two. The tips below will help you make the best food choices for your baby.
Tip 1: Use an FDA-approved formula with iron to meet your baby's needs if breastfeeding is not possible for you. The DGA, as well as other sources, find that breastfeeding has many benefits for both mom and baby. For mom, breastfeeding has been shown to decrease the risk of breast and ovarian cancer. For baby, breastfeeding promotes a stronger immune system and a healthier digestive system with less diarrhea and constipation. Don't panic if breastfeeding doesn't work for you. There are many reasons why breastfeeding may not be feasible. The DGA recommends that if human breast milk is unavailable, babies should be fed formula that is labeled "with iron" and approved by the Food and Drug Administration.
your baby is ready are good head and neck control, sitting up alone or with support, bringing objects to the mouth, grasping small objects and swallowing food rather than tongue thrusting, when your baby uses their tongue to push the food away from their mouth. When it is time to introduce your baby to solid foods, you can try foods from all food groups. Just be sure to avoid foods that your baby could choke on such as hot dogs, candy, nuts, seeds, raw carrots, grapes, popcorn, and large chunks of peanut butter.
Tip 4: Try to limit added salt and sugar in your baby's food. If introduced to very sweet or salty foods, infants may develop preferences for these types
of foods over healthier options.
Tip 5: Two things that you should avoid giving to your baby: honey and unpasteurized foods.
Honey may contain the bacteria that causes botulism in babies which means serious illness or death. In addition, unpasteurized foods should be avoided because they can contain harmful bacteria.
Tip 6: Your baby gets enough water in their breastmilk or formula until they are six months old so they don't need any plain water until then.
According to the DGA and other guidelines, your baby gets just the right amount of water through breastmilk or formula until they are six months old. In fact, any more water than what is contained in those sources can actually be dangerous to your baby. Small amounts (4 ounces per day) of drinking water can be introduced at the same time as they start eating solid foods. You can start increasing the amount of water you give your baby when they turn one year old.
Tip 2: Vitamin D supplements are a good idea to help your baby grow strong bones. The DGA explains that an important component to the infant diet is vitamin D because
this vitamin boosts bone strength. All babies that are fed breastmilk exclusively or mixed fed with a combination of breastmilk and infant formula will need a vitamin D supplement beginning soon after birth. Infant formula contains vitamin D, however until your baby consumes at least 32 ounces of formula per day the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends supplementing your baby with vitamin D to reach the right level.
Tip 3: As early as four months to six months old, your baby is ready to try solid foods. There are signs you can look out for to tell you that your baby is ready.
The DGA explains that your baby needs to try solid foods starting from ages four months to six months old, but not before or after those ages. Some signs that you can look for that
Tip 7: Wait until your baby turns one to give them cow's milk or fruit juice. Cow's milk should not be introduced until age one because it has protein and mineral con-
tents that are hard for your baby's kidneys and digestive system to process. Whole cow's milk can help meet calcium, potassium, vitamin D, and protein requirements. Fruit juice should be avoided before age one as well. At age one, up to four ounces of 100 percent fruit juice can be given just be sure that there are no added sugars in baby's juice.
Tip 8: Continue to follow the DGA's updates to help you choose what foods are best for your baby.
Following these guidelines will ensure infants get adequate vitamins and nutrients. As additional studies in this area are conducted, the USDA and the Department of Health and Human Services will update their findings in the DGA.

AgSouth Farm Credit distributes
$40 million in profits to borrowers
STATESBORO AgSouth Farm Credit CEO Pat Calhoun announced that the customer-owned cooperative is distributing $40 million in profits from 2020 to its member-borrowers, the highest regular patronage return in over 30 years of the association's patronage distribution.
Members of the cooperative play a crucial part in helping agricultural and rural communities receive reliable credit by doing business with AgSouth. This is done through the patronage program, and the distribution is voted on by the board of directors. Although it is not guaranteed, AgSouth has consecutively distributed patronage for the last 33 years returning over $580 million in profits since 1988.
"AgSouth is once again proud to continue our decades-long commitment to cooperative principals by making this strong distribution to our members," Calhoun said. "This year's $40 million dollar patronage exceeds our 2019 regular patronage distribution by $1.1 million dollars. These funds directly support our customers and the communities we serve. It really pays to do business the cooperative way with AgSouth."
"Stockholders will receive checks totaling $12 million (30 percent of the total distribution), with the remaining 70 percent, or $28 million, going into an allocated surplus account to be released at a later date at the discretion of the board," said AgSouth CFO Bo Fennell.
In February, AgSouth distributed allocated surplus from 2015 in the amount of $18.5 million to its members, for a total cash distribution this year of $30.5 million.
"AgSouth's strength and commitment to our business model once again allowed the distribution in cash from our allocated surplus accounts on a five-year basis. This $30.5 million in total cash distribution will have a significant economic impact in our territory," Calhoun added.
