Forage testing ensures quality hay, saves money on supplemental feed

Hay, rolled up in round bales or square bales, looks like, well, hay. And while some farmers say they can tell good hay from bad hay just by looking at it, the only way to know for sure is to do a forage test that provides an analysis of nutrients.
The University of Georgia Extension Service offers hay forage tests that anyone can request through a county Extension Office. UGA forage expert Dr. Lisa Baxter says forage testing is an excellent tool for hay farmers and buyers because, from a nutritional standpoint, there's more to hay than meets the eye.
"If you drive through rural areas of the state, you'll see `forage hay for sale' or `cow hay for sale' or `good hay for sale,' things like that," she said. "Ideally, we would be selling based on a forage test rather than those more visual qualities. So, this hay

is green. It smells good. It must be good hay, but that

doesn't tell us what's in there."

Like it or not, Joro spiders are here to stay

Chances are if you live in Northeast Georgia you've come across an East Asian Joro spider this fall.
At almost three inches across when their legs are fully extended, they're hard to miss. While they're roughly the same size as banana spiders and yellow garden spiders, the distinctive yellow and blue-black stripes on their backs and bright red markings on their undersides are unique. Their enormous three-dimensional webs are a striking golden color and tend to be located higher off the ground than those of other spiders.
"We've been getting lots of calls and emails from people reporting sightings," said Byron Freeman, director of the Georgia Museum of Natural History. "They seem to be really common in riparian areas and in urban areas around people's houses, but they're also in the deep woods."
Joro spiders have spread widely since they were first spotted in Hoschton, Ga., in 2013. They probably arrived by hitching a ride in a shipping container from China or Japan, accord-

ing to Freeman. He and Richard Hoebeke, associate curator of the museum's arthropod collection and a research professional in the University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Department of Entomology, confirmed the identity of those early arrivals based on genetic analysis in 2015.
Now, five years later, Joro spiders appear to have successfully established themselves in the area, with recent confirmed

reports from as far afield as Blairsville and Greenville, S.C. But there is still much that remains unknown about them.
One important question is how they might affect the local ecosystem. Will they outcompete other orb weaving spiders? Will they reduce insect populations through predation?
"We don't know what the impact is going to be," said Freeman, a faculty member in the University of Georgia Odum School of Ecology. "Right now, we're trying to learn as much as we can about them."
So far, early observations indicate that Joros are coexisting with the area's other orb weaving spiders, with webs close to, and in some cases even attached to, one another.
And Joro spiders also appear to be able to capture and feed on at least one insect that other local spiders are not: adult brown marmorated stink bugs, an invasive pest that can infest houses and damage crops. In turn, Joro spiders are vulnerable to predators like mud dauber wasps and birds.

"Buy Local" has been the mantra this year for many shoppers in Georgia who are looking for fresh produce and value-added products at their local farmers' markets during the COVID-19 pandemic. A new webinar series by the University of Georgia Extension Service looks to help producers "Sell Local."
"The Farmers Market Vendor Series" is a six-part webinar focusing on establishing a business and selling at the farmers market. Kyrie Adkins, Agriculture and Natural Resources agent at the Carroll County UGA Extension Office, is organizing the webinar.
Adkins said the idea came to her when she noticed an uptick in people coming to her office and asking how to sell their items. Meanwhile, she noticed that her local market had the same vendors selling each week. Her advice to those wishing to sell has been to start with their local farmers market.
"That's is going to be the easiest way to get their product out, because that's why people come to the farmers market, but they just don't know how to get involved," she said.

Rules Governing Livestock Exhibition Shows/Special Sales

Under current rules 40-13-3-.08 Livestock Exhibition, all exhibitions of livestock except equine are required to have a Special Sale or Show permit. The management is responsible for obtaining the exhibition permit from the State Veterinarian at least twenty-one (21) days prior to the opening of the exhibition. All livestock entering Georgia from out-of-state for exhibition must meet Georgia's interstate movement health requirements.
All animals being exhibited in any type of livestock show must be individually identified and accompanied by a Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (CVI). The CVI must show proof of the requirements outlined in the regulations for the appropriate species. The CVI must be issued within thirty (30) days prior to exhibition with the following exceptions:
For Georgia cattle, swine, goats and exotic animals exhibiting in Georgia 4-H and FFA shows, the CVI and required tests shall be valid for four months.
For Georgia sheep exhibiting in Georgia 4-H and FFA shows, a CVI must be issued by an accredited veterinarian and must be updated and signed every thirty (30) days during the show season by an accredited veterinarian, county extension agent, or vocational agriculture teacher. The examiner must sign and record the following statement on the certificate: "To the best of my knowledge, the animals being exhibited are free from any clinical signs consistent with those of footrot, scabies, soremouth, cutaneous fungal lesions, or any other infectious or communicable disease."
Under current rules 40-13-6-.02 Special Livestock Sales, a person desiring to hold special sale must apply in writing to the State Veterinarian for a Special Sale Permit as least twenty-one (21) days prior to the sale date. The permit will be grant-

ed without charge upon submission of proof satisfactory to the Commissioner of Agriculture that the applicant applying for the Special Sale Permit has sufficient surety in an amount established in a memorandum of understanding with the Department of Agriculture.
Associations holding sales of animals consigned by its members will not be required to procure surety provided the directors of the association accept full responsibility for financial obligations of the sale and release the Commissioner of Agriculture from any financial responsibility. A resolution supplied by the Department must be completed by the directors of the association and received by the Department prior to the Special Sale Permit being issued.
A farmer holding a sale, either production or dispersal, of his or her livestock for direct payment to the seller of such livestock is not considered a special sale, even when the sale is organized and advertised to the public or an auctioneer is utilized. The producer holding such sale must apply in writing to the State Veterinarian for a Notice of Sale Permit at least twenty-one (21) days prior to the sale date. No surety is required for this type of producer sale.
A private sale of livestock between two individuals does not require a permit or surety.
Georgia 4-H clubs and Georgia FFA chapters are not required to procure surety.

In today's world, it can be easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of our daily lives and sometimes neglect our own health. As adults we have all experienced moments when we simply feel we do not have the time or resources to make necessary healthy changes to our daily routines.
Children are no exception to this notion since they learn from our own behaviors as parents. We can all agree we want what is best for our children, but sometimes we fail to realize the importance of a healthy lifestyle and its impact on the future of our children. According to the CDC, 1 in 5 American children are considered obese. This is a high percentage of the population, especially when you consider the long-term effects obesity has on one's health. Georgia is currently ranked 17th in obesity in the age group of 10-17. There are several factors that contribute to a child becom-

ing obese including genetics, dietary habits, lack of exercise or a combination of these. Children with obesity are at a much higher risk for having other chronic health conditions and diseases including asthma, sleep apnea, bone and joint problems, and type 2 diabetes. Obese children also tend to have high blood pressure and high cholesterol putting them at a much higher risk for heart disease than their normal weight peers.
The social isolation, bullying and teasing that obese children endure is much more likely to lead to mental health struggles with depression, anxiety, and poor self-esteem. Since children with obesity are more likely to be obese as adults, their health complications tend to worsen and continue their increased risk for adult complications such as diabetes, cancer and stroke.
How can I help my child if they are already obese? As stated previously, there are several risk factors that lead to obesity and we will focus on the ones we can control in this article. Too much time being inactive, lack of sleep, and lack of access to healthy foods are often the biggest obstacles children and parents face. One of the best ways we can help our children is to lead by example. Children are much more likely to adopt healthy behaviors if they learn it firsthand from their caregivers.
Get out and play together for the recommended 60 minutes

a day. Find a fun activity for the whole family. Keep plenty of drinking water available. Cutting out just one sugary drink a day and replacing it with water can save up to 180 calories.
Another healthy snack tip is to incorporate more fresh fruits and vegetables into your child's diet. Replace unhealthy snacks with fruit and try a new vegetable with dinner each night. One good rule of thumb for snacks is to avoid anything with added sugars and high fat content.
Lastly, do not underestimate the importance of a good night's rest. Most children require eight hours or more of uninterrupted sleep in order to grow and develop appropriately. When children are well rested, they tend to be more willing and able to be active throughout the day, improving their ability to get the recommended exercise.
A final piece of advice for parents is to be proactive and be aware of your child's growth. Discuss any concerns with your child's pediatrician and look for ways that you can help make healthy changes become habits that eventually continue into adulthood.
Reducing obesity in children can be a challenging task. It is not one that parents should tackle alone. Numerous resources are available for parents and children, but the best place to start perhaps is the CDC website. Carroll County Extension Agent Paula Burke will host the next webinar on Nov. 30 about selling local meats. Burke and her husband have a sheep farm and sell meat at local farmers' markets in west Georgia.
The final webinar will be on Dec. 7. Bryan Hager of Crager-Hager Farm will discuss selling local produce. Hager grows certified organic produce on his wife's farm in north Carroll County.
Those who sign up for the webinars will have access to videos of two earlier webinars on state licensing and safety requirements and general information to know about selling at a farmers market. Adkins said she planned each webinar to stand on its own, so people can pick and choose which ones to watch.
Adkins attributed the interest in selling at local farmers'

markets to the COVID-19 pandemic. "People are realizing they have a product and think, `Hey,
I can sell this,' especially things like eggs and poultry," she said. "We're actually finishing up a poultry webinar now, and we've had a huge interest in people wanting to sell poultry products."
Adkins said you don't have to be a farmer to sell products at a farmers market.
"We're going to talk about selling different animal products like goat soap, goat lotion but also about other things like fresh-cut flowers and baked goods," she said. "We want people to know, too, that you don't have to be a farmer to sell at a farmers market, and that ag doesn't just mean fruits, vegetables, and meat. You can have an array of different products to sell."

Joro Spiders: They pose no threat to people

their principal host, the banana spider, to this new kind of orb weaver," he said. He pointed out that banana spiders, a relative of the Joro, are native to the Caribbean and Central America. They were first recorded in the U.S. in 1862 and have since naturalized.
"My guess is that this will be no different than the banana spider, and I don't know that we can assess what the effect of the banana spider has been at this point," he said.
Another question Freeman hopes to answer is how the males find their mates.
Joro spiders travel by ballooning, letting the wind carry them on a strand of gossamer.
"The male has to drift in and find the female," Freeman said. "Sometimes there'll be four or five males on a web, sometimes there'll be one, so the males are moving between webs. When you have a large population, it seems feasible that a male could just drift from one spot to the next, but when you don't have a lot of webs around, how does the male show up?"
Freeman is also conducting further genetic analysis to determine what causes some Joro spiders to have a different

color pattern. While most have distinctive black and yellow striped legs, some have legs that are solid black. These black morphs have other physical differences that are only apparent when viewed under a microscope, and Freeman has determined that they are genetically distinct members of the species.
Despite their size, Freeman said that Joro spiders don't pose a threat to people.
"All spiders have venom that they use to subdue prey," he said. "If you put your hand in front of one and try to make it bite you, it probably will. But they run if you disturb their web. They're trying to get out of the way."
Freeman said that Joros can be shooed away with a broom if they're in a location that puts them too close for comfort.
But as for removing them permanently, he compared such efforts to shoveling sand at the beach.
"Should you try to get rid of them?" said Freeman. "You can, but at this point, they're here to stay."

Cook Georgia Grown:
Bread Pudding with Lemon Sauce

Ingredients 3 eggs 1 cup sugar 3 cups bread cubes 1 cup milk, warmed 2 Tbsps butter, melted

tsp ground cinnamon tsp ground nutmeg tsp vanilla extract cup raisins Dash salt

Directions Beat eggs and sugar in large mixing bowl. Add remaining ingredients, stirring to combine. Pour into a greased 2-qt baking dish. Bake at 350 degrees F for 50 minutes or until center is set. Cut into squares and serve warm with lemon sauce.
Lemon Sauce

Ingredients 1 egg, beaten 1 cup sugar Grated rind of 1 lemon Juice of 2 lemons 1 Tbsp butter

Directions Combine sugar, egg, lemon juice and rind. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until thick (about 5 minutes after it starts boiling). Stir in butter to melt.

Cook over low heat, stirring constantly, until mixture thickens. Serve warm over bread pudding.

Testing notes from 2004: For testing purposes, a loaf of unsliced white bread from the baker at a local grocery store was used. The crusts were removed and torn into 1-inch cubes. The sauce also would be good on pound cake or gingerbread.

Good To Grow: Cassina Garden Club grows for the sake of history

The Cassina Garden Club on St. Simons Island tends more than gardens. They are also stewards of history in their restoration and upkeep of two 200-year-old tabby cabins.
Club member Janis Rodriguez says the structures represent a wide swath of local history and are much like a garden of stories. The cabins housed slaves, wood mill workers, a school and a doctor's office by the time the garden club started using them as a meeting place in the 1930s.
"The two cabins we have were transitioned. They survived it all," said Rodriguez. "The cabins were repurposed throughout the years."
The cabins are on Gascoigne Bluff overlooking the Frederica River and were part of the Hamilton Plantation, where cotton was the main crop. The cabins were constructed using tabby, the local masonry material made from sand, water, ash and oyster shells. The plantation owners built the cabins as duplexes to house two families.
After the Civil War, most of the cabins were torn down or used for residences. Rodriguez says an African-American woman who was a former slave lived in one of the cabins her entire life, and that may be a reason they survived. After the woman passed away, cotton was no longer the main crop on the island. The cabins then served mill workers, who turned timber floated down the Altamaha River into lumber.
The club recently restored the cabins and gardens to expand their work of historic preservation and education. One cabin is used as a welcome center and museum that houses items found on the grounds things like utensils used by slave families and school items used by children who attended school there during the mill days. The other cabin was restored to its original appearance.
The work took six years and over $400,000 raised by club members and through grants. Rodriguez said there was a lot of work to be done to the structures. At one point, the roof of one cabin fell in and a tree took root in the structure.
"They were in pretty bad shape," she said. Today, the club runs the cabins as a historical site with money raised from two annual fundraising events a holiday bake sale in December and the Tabby and Tillandsia Garden Walk in April, which is a tour of private gardens on St. Simons and Sea Island. Local Girl Scouts planted a butterfly garden at the cabins for a community service project. They also earned their archaeology badges on digs at the site during restoration. Rodriguez said the cabins were placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988. With the restoration project complete, the club is working to add them to the Gullah

and peanuts, along with native plants such as the shrub False Indigo (Baptisia australis), Muhly grass (Muhlenbergia capillaris) also called sweet grass and perennials like Seaside Goldenrod (Solidago sempervirens).
Rodriguez said the club also grows its namesake, the Yaupon "Cassina" holly. They kept the name, although the charter members had a rough introduction to the plant in 1928. The ladies learned more than they bargained for about the plant's scientific name, Ilex vomitoria.
"The members read that the Indians used the berry as a tea, so they all said, `Oh, we'll take the berries, and we will make tea,'" Rodriguez said. "They all had tea one day, and everybody got very, very sick because the berries are supposed to make you throw up. The Indians used it for medicinal purposes. It was a hard lesson, and they never did that again."
Club members continue their work in the community for beautification and encouraging gardens. The club consults with the Fort Frederica National Monument in keeping the herb garden on site. They also maintain the garden at Golden Isles Hospice and Thrive at Frederica senior living community.
Gee Gee Adams, a former club president, said COVID-19 closed tours and fundraising this year, but they hope to be able to open soon.
"The main thing is to maintain the gardens and the grounds and to keep them pristine," Adams said. "We go out, and it's the one thing we can do that together. There's plenty of space that we can work in the gardens on Wednesdays."

I stopped along the Flint River one day to pay my respects to one of my favorite singers, Ray Charles. Ray was born in 1930 in Albany and though he was blind by age 7, he became one of the greatest R&B musicians of all time. He had dozens of hit singles on the R&B and Country charts and made a memorable appearance in the Blues Brothers movie. His most famous accomplishment may have come when Georgia on my Mind was adopted as the official Georgia State Song in 1979, signed into law by Gov. George Busbee. After his death in 2004, the City of Albany constructed a memorial to Ray across from the Albany Civic Center and named it Ray Charles Plaza. The centerpiece of the plaza is a statue of Ray seated at a piano singing one of his famous tunes. A walkway surrounding the statue is painted black and white to resemble piano keys. Ray's music is piped from speakers in the plaza to serenade visitors. A plaque highlighting Ray's accomplishments is written in English and in braille.

Forage Testing: Forage lab hay quality results in about a week

look at can just be lousy hay," Echols said. Echols explained for his use, a forage test gives him an
idea on how to supplement feed for his cows without wasting money.
"If you had good quality hay, you wouldn't have to go through the labor of adding supplemental feed sometimes, or you would add half as much."
Asked if his customers request a forage test, Echols says it's "about half and half," and he understands why. Farmers, for the most part, are creatures of habit. If they find a good hay source and it seems to work without a test, then they will keep using hay the way they have done for years.
"They're set to feeding X amount of hay per cow, every year and X amount of supplemental feed," Echols said. "That's where your cost comes in is in the supplemental feed, but they've been doing it the same way for a long time, so it doesn't matter to them if they have average hay or poor hay. They're going to feed supplemental feed anyhow."
Growing good nutritional hay is a complex process that takes in a lot of factors. Echols says he checks the soil, determines how much fertilizer to use, and then "prays for rain

like everybody else." Echols grows bermudagrass, which is a popular forage in
Georgia along with Bahia grass and fescue. He says it takes about 28 days to produce a good stand of hay, give or take a day depending on weather conditions. Hay farmers also need to have two-to-three days of dry weather to cut, rake and bale the hay.
Echols added that the height of the grass is important, too. After the 28-day mark, he says the quality of the hay peaks.
"I can come and bale hay that's mid-thigh, get lots of hay up, but it's going to be lousy quality," he said. "But if I bale hay that's mid-calf, and if everything worked out well, then I'm not going to get as much hay, but it's going to be really good quality hay. So, I'm competing against those guys who are baling it at mid-thigh and are just selling on volume."
Baxter agrees and sets her hay harvest mark at 30 days. She said that the grass on the cellular level will toughen up like trees to hold the plant up and doesn't provide the animal anything digestible.
And that comes back to the cost of supplemental feed, Baxter adds. Forage tests are available through any county

UGA Extension office, with fees for a basic test running between $20 and $30. The Extension agent sends the samples to the UGA Forage Testing Lab in Athens, which can get results back in about a week.
"A forage test will pay for itself," she said. "If we go the entire winter supplementing one way and then realize, `Hey, our hay was actually this quality and my cows didn't that need this much corn or cottonseed or whatever else you supplement with,' then you could have saved a hundred-plus dollars per head or something like that," she said. "The forage test (cost) is always going to pencil out."
