Muscadines are on Georgia's mind
Gov. Brian Kemp signed SB 358 into law Aug. 5, making the muscadine the official grape of Georgia effective Jan. 1, 2021. According to the Georgia Muscadine Association, muscadine grapes are harvested in Georgia for wine and fresh fruit. To learn more about muscadines, make plans to virtually attend the Georgia Muscadine Conference to be held online Nov. 2. The event is hosted by the Georgia Wine Producers and the Georgia Muscadine Association. Learn more at www.GeorgiaWineProducers. org. (Photos courtesy Paulk Vineyards, Wray)

Farming social media for opportunity
Ag community embraces digital platforms to educate consumers, reach new markets

Visitors to Tara Green's Instagram account (@greengatefarmers_wife) will see cows and chickens and the work she and her husband, Steven, do to keep their farm in Middle Georgia going. Her presence on social media is more about telling their story than selling products.
"I felt like that was something we really needed to do, and I kept pushing it away, pushing it away until finally in December I

More and more, agriculture producers are turning to social media as part of their marketing strategy. And if done right, social media can be an important part of a farm's business operations.
BarbaraAnn Collins, Albany program coordinator for the Small Business Development Center of the University of Georgia, said social media is a potent medium today. The keys to success are consistency and keeping it simple.
"You would rather do one social media platform and do it really well and have a consistent brand than to be on three, four, seven, eight different platforms but posting across them inconsistently," Collins said. She added that the SBDC works with people to identify their target audience and choose the best social media platform for reaching them.
Facebook is the most accessible and versatile to use, according to Collins. It is easy to create a page, and Facebook offers eCommerce tools for doing business on the page. Instagram, which is owned by Facebook, is more about branding, or telling a story.
"In a perfect world of marketing, you have your Instagram, which draws people in; you have your Facebook that brings them a call to action; and then you have some sort of email marketing setup where once they become a customer, you can continue to cater to them as a customer," Collins said. "That's kind of what I consider

Guest Column: The right chemistry for an effective defense against COVID-19
By John Shugart
State Chemist
In what has been an extremely eventful year, the incident with the largest impact on everyone's life has been the coronavirus outbreak. At the center of the virus outbreak has been stopping the spread of the virus and the constant struggle of how to keep yourself and others
safe from getting sick. One of the key items that people have been relying upon to stop the spread of the virus is hand sanitizer -- essentially something that you can just rub all over your hands to kill the virus. While this may be an oversimplification, it is at the core of what people expect from hand sanitizer. However, with repeated FDA warnings concerning harmful ingredients in hand sanitizer, it can be difficult to make clear what is good or bad for your health. With those things in mind, here are the things that I look for on the label of a bottle of hand sanitizer: Isopropyl Alcohol (75%) also called Isopropanol (75%), or; Ethanol (80%) also called Ethyl Alcohol (80%). These are the two key components that you would want in a bottle of hand sanitizer. These ingredients and amounts would meet the World Health Organization's requirements for hand sanitizer as well as meet FDA requirements, meaning that the active ingredient (isopropyl alcohol or ethanol) would be present in an amount to kill a virus (75% for isopropanol and 80%
for ethanol). That is the key part of what you would be buying and using to stop the spread of disease.
Keep in mind that bottles that are just labeled "alcohol" could contain any number of chemical compounds, as "alcohol" is a general term for a class of compounds which can include methanol or 1-propanol. Both methanol and 1-propanol are on the list of compounds the FDA has issued warnings for and can be harmful to your health.
Additionally, if the amounts of active ingredient are not present in the recommended amount, then the hand sanitizer that you are using will not work as well. So be sure to look for the two specific ingredients above in hand sanitizer and then make sure that those ingredients are there in the amounts recommended by FDA to kill the virus.
All that said, here is the best thing that you can do for yourself: wash your hands thoroughly with soap. That means soap up your hands (make lots of bubbles) and get the bubbles all over your hands. Finally, rinse off the bubbles with warm water. (If you need a time frame on how long to do this, singing the ABC song is a great way to measure the time.)
Washing your hands regularly is the best way to clean your hands of disease. Hand sanitizer, while good, is not a replacement for washing your hands. Hand sanitizer should be used when you are at a place where you cannot wash your hands. Hand sanitizer is quick and convenient. However, if you want to make sure your hands are free of bacteria and viruses that can make you sick, then soap up your hands and wash them regularly.

ment of Agriculture Laboratory Division.
Georgie's Drive Thru
Swainsboro
Hello! I'm Georgie, the Georgia Grown mascot. I travel the state of Georgia promoting our No. 1 industry, agriculture! There are moments that define every generation. Pearl Harbor was a moment that changed the world well before my time. There was an event in my lifetime that was just as definitive. I remember that September morning in 2001 when my phone rang. When I answered it, my friend told me the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City were on the ground. Up until that point, we all thought that an ocean could save us from the wiles of the earth. To honor the lives lost on 9/11 and all emergency response personnel killed in the line of duty serving the citizens of Emanuel County, the Sons of the American Legion built a memorial in a little park in Swainsboro called Pine Brook Nature Park. Three of the four sides of the monument pay tribute to each separate branch of emergency service: law enforcement, emergency medical service and firefighters.. The front of the memorial is dedicated to 9/11, featuring an 85-pound piece of the Twin Towers that was given by the Fire Chief of New York City.

the best triangle of social media." Other social media platforms such as YouTube and Twit-
ter offer different ways to reach an audience. Newer sites, like Snapchat and Tik Tok, are built for the youngest demographic.
Collins called Pinterest a great secondary platform that may require more time than farm operators have.
"Pinterest is like an old-school bulletin board, but on a much bigger scale," she said. "Unless you have that content to put on the bulletin board, while it can be effective, you're not going to get traction for yourself, which the ultimate goal is to drive people to you and your business."
Tara Green found the inspiration to go social after hearing Michelle Miller the Farm Babe (@IowaFarmBabe) a social media influencer, speak at a Young Farmers conference last year. Miller encouraged the crowd to use social media to sell products directly to customers and get their stories out.
Miller said she started small on Facebook in 2014 sharing stories of her newfound passion for agriculture. Today she has 3 million views per month across four social media channels. Miller encourages the agriculture community to first tell stories about themselves as a way of building an audience and promoting their business.
"I see many people do pages when they never show their faces. They take pictures of their animals, and that's great, but it's like, `Yeah, but for who are you?' People are curious about the person behind the farm," Miller said. "So I think there are so many different ways you can go about it as long as you're true to who you love and what you love to do."
The Small Business Development Center at UGA offers online training sessions and webinars on social media and other business resources. For more information, go to https://www. georgiasbdc.org.

Creighton Fuller of Cumming shows off a 117-pound watermelon he and his wife, Pat, grew in the flower bed in their front yard. Creighton grew the watermelon from heirloom seeds given to him by his 90-year-old brother who lives in Alabama. UGA to begin new pecan variety trials in Southeast Georgia
By Emily Cabrera UGA College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences
University of Georgia faculty will begin a series of
pecan trials this winter to help identify better manage-
ment practices for growers.
New pecan trees will be planted at the UGA College
of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences' Vidalia
Onion and Vegetable Research Center in Toombs Coun-
ty for research and demonstration purposes. Andrew
Sawyer, Southeast Georgia area pecan agent for UGA
Cooperative Extension, is spearheading several research
projects with a team of UGA researchers looking at
factors that impact the pecan industry such as variety
selection, insect pest management, disease resistance,
herbicide application rates and other input requirements.
This research is funded by a grant awarded last year by
the Pecan Commodity Commission.
Sawyer, who began this new position in May 2019,
is based in Statesboro and supports pecan growers
throughout Southeast Georgia. His position is funded
by the Georgia Pecan Growers' Association and UGA
Extension to support Extension pecan specialist Lenny
Wells at the UGA Tifton campus.
The team will primarily study the effects of pecan
scab fungus on various cultivars that grow well in the Pecan scab fungus (Fusicladium effusum) is the most destructive disease of southeast. Pecan scab begins in the tissues of the tree pecans in Georgia.

"The most susceptible cultivars to this disease also hap- able as the current industry favorites. His recommendation
pen to be the industry standards used here in the Southeast," for growers who are interested in establishing new orchards
explained Sawyer. "We didn't used to see pecan scab in these is to use a variety of cultivars to help minimize the risk of
disease and pest issues. "Since 2008, UGA researchers in Tifton have been
working with alternative cultivars that are resistant to pecan scab, have low input requirements, are high yielding and produce great quality nuts. Some of the best varieties we've seen are Excel, Lakota, Gafford, McMillan, and Kanz a cold-tolerant variety that may be better suited for growers in North Georgia as well," said Sawyer.
Low-input cultivars provide an economic benefit to growers, especially in Southeast Georgia, because orchards in this region tend to be managed through commercial practices, but on a much smaller scale than found elsewhere in the state.
"When you have a smaller operation, but still have to shell out a lot of time and money into your crop, the cost-benefit ratio sometimes doesn't work to your advantage," said Sawyer. "That's why these low-input cultivars are so attractive. It means growers can save more time and money and end up with a great quality, high-yielding product without all the heavy investments. So, the Vidalia Onion Research Farm will be a great location in this part of the state to observe these low-input cultivars," he added.
As research plots are established this winter, trees will be planted in such a way to accomplish both longterm variety research and short-term applied research goals. Sawyer and his team will be hosting several demonstrations at the research farm over the next few years to allow Extension agents and growers to participate in hands-on training about topics including planting, pruning, grafting, irrigation, pest and disease prevention strategies, and making herbicide treatments using different chemistries and rotations. To learn more about pecan varieties and management, see UGA Extension Circular 898, "Pecan Varieties for Georgia Orchards," and UGA Extension Circular 1174, "Pecan Management," both available at extension.uga.edu/publications.
