Grown and sewn in Georgia:
Governor, Legislators voice support for new Georgia-grown clothing line
By Kendall McWilliams
kendall.mcwilliams@agr.georgia.gov
Gov. Nathan Deal joined Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Gary W. Black in announcing the successful launch of a line of 100 percent Georgia-grown cotton Tshirts during a press conference held at the Georgia State Capitol on March 20. The T-shirts are grown and sewn in Georgia in partnership with the Georgia Cotton Commission, Georgia Vocational Rehabilitation Agency and Georgia's cotton farmers.
According to Black, the Georgia Grown marketing program capitalized on the idea of identifying a transparent supply chain to produce a 100 percent Georgia-grown and sewn T-shirt following questions from citizens about Georgia Grown-branded merchandise that was produced in Central America.
"That's a little tough, you know. We all know why that happens, but we started on a journey. We said, `We are not going to stop until we have a 100-percent Georgiagrown, high-quality T-shirt, and we know the farms that it came from,'" Black said.
The process started with 56 bales of cotton that were sourced from South Georgia and ginned at Osceola Cotton Company in Irwin County. According to Black, 22,000 pounds of fabric was cut and sewn into a total of 35,107 T-shirts by Platinum Sportswear in Wilkes County. Those shirts are warehoused, screen-printed and bulk shipped from Georgia Industries for the Blind in Bainbridge. The entire process takes place within a 600-mile radius of the farm where the cotton originated.
Georgia Grown partnered with local screen printers, including Georgia Industries for the Blind, to complete the design
process for local businesses and organizations. The inventory of T-shirts is completely customizable, feature a Georgia Grown cotton tag, and come in five colors.
"With more than $73 billion in economic output each year, agribusiness is

the largest industry here in the number one state for business," Deal said. "An important part of that industry, which is directly tied to this Georgia Grown project, is our cotton sector, as almost 20 percent
of all American cotton comes from Georgia. With this project, we are recognizing farmers, growers and raisers who are ultimately responsible for so much other business all along the farm-to-consumer supply chain, and I am proud to stand alongside Commissioner Black in support of this campaign."
Creating a supply chain that occurs in three different agrarian regions of Georgia has helped to rebuild Georgia's textile manufacturing industry and brought revitalization to rural Georgia.
Rep. Terry England, R-Auburn, who serves as a co-chair of the House Rural Development Council, acknowledged the importance of the Georgia Grown program and its impact on rural development. England said Georgia Grown has established an effective blueprint for the processing and sale of products grown on Georgia farms that employs Georgians and keeps money in Georgia.
"When all of those pieces fit together, we will see rural Georgia prosper again," England said.

Georgia's Farmer of the Year
Gov. Nathan Deal presented James Vaughn of Monroe County with the Georgia Farmer of the Year award during the University of Georgia's Flavor of Georgia Contest at the Railroad Freight Depot in Atlanta March 20.
"Our honoree here today has taken the 500 acres that was originally part of the farm on which he grew up and he's added to it and now I understand that his operation is up to about 5,500 acres," Deal said. "He continues to grow and to expand and to utilize best practices in all of his farming operations and that's what we all want to see in agriculture in our state to conserve the soil, to take advantage of its productivity and to be able to produce good products."
Vaughn will compete against winners from nine other Southern states for the Swisher Sweets/Sunbelt Agricultural Expo Southeast Farmer of the Year Award in Moultrie in October.

From the Commissioner: Rural prosperity is always on our minds
By Gary W. Black
Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture
Across America, more sincere attention is being focused on rural development and prosperity than at any other time I, or anyone I know, can remember. The Trump Administration is taking steps with infrastructure and USDA programming to nurture future greatness across the entirety of the fruited plain. I salute the President's efforts. However, initiatives like this require extensive research and qualitative stakeholder involvement to sow success. Farmers have plenty to say on the subject. Take, for example, the owner of 520 acres in Missouri. A husband and father of 11, he begins a survey on rural prosperity by saying that he has done well. His neighbors, however, have done less well. Asked why, he says his views on the reasons why "are up for consideration." He says farm homes in his neighborhood are not as good as they should be because too many of them are encumbered by mortgages. He says the schools do not train boys and girls satisfactorily for life on the farm because they allow young people to get the idea in their heads that city life is better. The remedy to this problem, he says, is that "practical farming should be taught." Missourians are known for being straightforward. To the question of whether the farmers and their wives in his neighborhood are satisfactorily organized, he answers: "Oh, there is a little onehorse grange gang in our locality, and every darned one thinks they ought to be a king." To the question, "Are the renters of farms in your neighborhood making a satisfactory living?" he answers: "No, because they move about so much hunting a better job." To the question, "Is the supply of farm labor in your neighborhood satisfactory?" he answers: "No, because the people have gone out of the baby business." When asked as to the remedy, he answers: "Give a pension to every mother who gives birth to seven living boys on American soil." I warned you. To the question, "Are the conditions surrounding hired labor on the farm in your neighborhood satisfactory to the hired men?" he answers: "Yes, unless he is a drunken cuss." He adds that he would like to blow up the stillhouses and root out whiskey and beer. To the question, "Are the sanitary conditions on the farms in your neighborhood satisfactory?" he answers: "No, too careless about chicken yards and the like, and poorly covered wells. In one well on (a) neighbor's farm I counted seven snakes in the wall of the well, and they used the water daily: his wife (is) dead now and he is looking for another." No, this is not creative prose. Yes, perhaps it is a creative presentation of actual responses to the President's inquiry on the perennial topic of rural prosperity. The Missouri farmer was real; the President was Theodore Roosevelt. In 1908, Roosevelt impaneled a "Commission on Country Life" that really helped jump-start discussion about the formation of the Cooperative Extension Service and Vocational Agriculture instruction. Rural electrification followed. We are still nourished daily by the generational fruit of that commission. President Trump's commitment to 21st century improvements in infrastructure and rural prosperity is authentic and long overdue. The information "superhighway" must be extended to all corners of the country. Our regulatory systems across every agency must be streamlined. Federal leaders should recognize that rural prosperity can be enhanced not so much by adding a good new government process as by eliminating a bad one. Our ports and waterways remain agriculture's gateways to world markets. Land-grant university research benefits every farmer and consumer. Appropriations that meet these critical needs of rural America are never an expense; they are always an investment in the future. Thank you, President Trump, for recognizing that after 110 years, the Missouri farmer's wisdom still reigns supreme. He ended his "Country Life" survey by stating that the most important single thing to be done for the betterment of country life is "good roads." I simply say, amen. Mercer Medical Moment: The facts about mammograms
By Gary H. Dent, M.D.
In recent years, there has been much controversy regarding screening mammography and the appropriate age to begin it, as well as the benefits of the test. An ever-increasing amount of frustration has been voiced by women feeling bewildered and anxious regarding mammography in general. Commonly, patients want to be advocates of their own health but find themselves unsure of the risk and benefits of mammography. Today, with modern advances in technology and various options for breast imaging, the confusion is compounded. Often, the worst result is that a woman becomes so confused and perhaps skeptical of the recommendations by various "experts" that no mammogram is done until obvious signs and symptoms of breast cancer arise. One of the more confusing aspects of screening mammograms is when to begin them. Timing and frequency will remain in debate for years to come. In fact, we will likely never have a 100 percent consensus on the best age to begin regular screening mammograms or the optimal frequency for screening. However, by any measure, screening mammograms will detect breast cancer earlier and will save lives. Currently, 1 in 8 women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with breast cancer. In 2018 alone, an estimated 266,120 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed and an additional 63,960 non-invasive (in-situ) breast cancers will be found. Second only to lung cancer, invasive breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths among women. While it is true that a family history is a strong indicator of risk, just because a woman does not have a history of breast cancer in her family does not mean she is not at significant risk. In fact, a breast cancer diagnosis will occur in 85 percent of women with no family history. The two greatest risk factors are simply gender (being a woman) and age (growing older). Often asked is what age should screening exams begin? Every argument to begin screening exams later in life has been rejected by every major medical organization that provides input and expertise in breast cancer care. The experts in imaging The American College of Radiology and the Society of Breast Imaging recommend that annual screening mammograms begin at age 40. There are millions of women that have been diagnosed with breast cancer because of early screening mammograms, and lives have been saved due to an associated early diagnosis while in their 40s. Understanding that screening mammograms should begin at age 40 is a huge step towards committing to a regular mammogram schedule. Once that commitment is made, it is important then to understand the various imaging options that exist and the availability of these options. There are three main imaging methods available for breast cancer detection. The most familiar and most widely accessible is digital mammography. Second, and similar to digital mammography, is the recently introduced technique of tomosynthesis. Often referred to as
"3D Mammography," tomosynthesis is rapidly becoming a clinically useful tool for screening. Finally, the option of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) exists as a screening tool but should only be used for high-risk individuals such as those patients with a very strong family history and/ or known genetic mutations for increased risk of breast cancer. Such patients may also receive a recommendation for alternating a screening breast MRI and digital mammography (or, Tomosynthesis 3D Mammography depending on availability).
Again, routine screening breast MRI is currently not a recommendation for a woman with an average lifetime risk of breast cancer. This means that most women are faced with understanding their choice between digital mammography and tomosynthesis.
The long-standing modality of digital mammography has the advantage of being both widely available and covered by insurance in almost all circumstances. However, tomosynthesis, the newest modality to be introduced, is demonstrating very clear evidence-based advantages for its use. These advantages are currently being demonstrated in several large, multi-center studies throughout the world. The advantages include less indeterminate exams and reduced unnecessary biopsies. Most importantly, in specific subsets of breast tissue types, an increased detection of cancer at an earlier stage has been demonstrated. Early detection is a key factor in successful treatment of the disease. Unfortunately, tomosynthesis is not as widely available and too frequently is not covered by insurance.
The bottom line is 1) invasive breast cancer is a leading cancer diagnosis and cause of cancer deaths among U.S. women and adherence to a screening mammogram program is proven to save lives due to early detection; and 2) women with an average risk of breast cancer should begin their annual screening with either digital mammography or tomosynthesis at age 40. And again, while tomosynthesis (3D Mammography) is beginning to demonstrate clear advantages over standard digital mammography, standard digital mammography should not be discounted as a reliable method for the detection of breast cancer due to its proven track record.
Adding to the argument that standard digital mammography might be a patient's best choice is the fact that it's almost always available in most communities throughout Georgia including rural areas. MRI should be reserved for difficult diagnostic situations and recommended by the radiologist and/or surgeon. Only if you have been identified as being at "high risk" for developing breast cancer by your healthcare professional will MRI be appropriate as a screening exam.
Hopefully this breakdown can help you, as the patient, understand the importance of regular screening mammograms and at what age you should begin them. Understanding the types of imaging will help you make an informed choice and understand the recommendations of your doctor.

Hello! I'm Georgie, the Georgia Grown mascot. I travel the state promoting our #1 industry, agriculture! Did you know that March is National Peanut Month? With an annual production of more than 3 billion pounds, Georgia is the nation's #1 producer of peanuts. In fact, almost half of the peanuts grown in the United States come from Georgia. Since peanuts grow underground, they form a hull around their seeds. That hull must be removed from every one of them before they can be made into foods like peanut butter and peanut oil. The process of removing the hull is called shelling.
One day I found myself wondering, "Where is the world's largest peanut?" So I called the folks at the Georgia Peanut Commission and asked them. Their answer was Ashburn, Georgia. The Turner County Peanut Monument, standing guard over Interstate 75 just south of Exit 82, is the official state peanut monument by proclamation of the

Pure Flavor Georgia greenhouse project coming to life
FORT VALLEY Good weather this winter has spurred a flurry of activity at the site of Pure Flavor's greenhouse construction project in Middle Georgia. Ground leveling completed in late fall led to a smooth start of construction of the company's new 75-acre high-tech greenhouse facility in Peach County.
Over the last few weeks, post holes were dug and back-filled, and Dutch greenhouse-builder, Havecon, began erecting the main structure with full scale im-

Place bagged or containerized vegetables in the freezer. They will keep for up to two years.

Georgia Grown brand gains traction in school cafeterias
Ninety-three percent of public school systems statewide buy local
By Amy Carter
amy.carter@agr.georgia.gov
FOREST PARK -- The Georgia Grown Feed My School program hosted its fourth annual School Source Show at the Atlanta State Farmers Market March 8. Forty-eight food product vendors and 46 school systems came together to explore ways of putting more local fare on the plates of Georgia school children.
The Georgia Department of Agriculture's Georgia Grown marketing program has been promoting partnerships between Georgia farmers, value-added producers and Georgia school systems since 2011. More than 50 school systems statewide now participate in the Feed My School program in some fashion, said Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Gary W. Black.
Good nutrition is key to academic, social, athletic and artistic achievement, Black said. For many children, the meals they eat at school will be the most balanced and substantive of the day. That makes school nutritionists as important as teachers to the growth and development of good students. It also makes school nutritionists important players in the push for rural prosperity, as they plan meals around products grown and harvested in rural communities.
"In the spirit of local food, in the spirit of rural development and prosperity which is very popular in Georgia, it's very popular with the President, it's very popular with the Secretary of Agriculture we must view school nutrition also, if not predominantly, through the lens of the economy." Black said, "because if there's economic opportunity for local producers, that's good for the local community, and I suggest that causes all the social benefits to draft with it."
By way of proof, Black offered the example of Jaemor Farms in Alto, northeast of Gainesville. Two years ago, Jaemor grew 13 acres of strawberries. This year, the farm has 20 acres.
"I know that seven acres additional is predominantly now going to school systems because of your support and because maybe of what our joint efforts together have made happen," he said. "I believe that's a pretty good case study. What if we could do that about 500 more times and then not stop at that?"
The Georgia Departments of Agriculture, Education
Amy Carter/GDA
Georgia School Superintendent Richard Woods, left, and Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Gary Black, right, with Samantha Benjamin-Kirk, Southeast Region Farm-to-School liaison for the USDA.
Sheila Rice and Sherri Rainey discussed with school nutritionists the benefits of incorporating butterbeans and peas from Calhoun Produce into their lunchroom menus.
and Public Health have committed to a goal of having 20 percent of every school meal served in Georgia consist of Georgia-grown food products by the year 2020. Additionally, 20 percent of Georgia schools will be challenged to reach the 50 percent mark for their locally grown food content.
State School Superintendent Richard Woods said 101 of Georgia's 181 public school districts are currently offering at least one serving of Georgia Grown produce per day. Those school systems spent an estimated $12 million on Georgia Grown foods for breakfast and lunch between July and December of 2017.
"This is a serious commitment we're seeing, and I expect as we grow this will probably double and continue to increase in the years to come," Woods said. "People are beginning to buy into this and it really is growing exponentially."
Calhoun Produce is one Georgia grower that is seeing opportunity in the farm-to-school push. Located in Ashburn a city of some 4,000 residents that lies about 20 miles south of Cordele Calhoun is known for its you-pick strawberry patch, but Sheila Rice and Sherri Rainey were pitching peas and butterbeans at the source show.
Even though the peak picking season for peas and butterbeans is August through October, they're a nutritional option year-round when blanched and frozen while fresh.
"They can eat Georgia Grown butterbeans and peas the whole school year," Rice said.
Despite the abundance of fruit, vegetable and row crops grown around Ashburn and Cordele, many children are unaware of the link between those crops and the food they eat and the clothes they wear. Not only do the lessons of Feed My School heighten the nutritional standards for schoolprepared meals, they also help school systems to address the gap between academia and agriculture.
Rainey, who teaches at Crisp County Primary School in Cordele, said farm day activities linked to the system's participation in Feed My School have dispelled the notion most hold that all food comes solely from the grocery store.
"If you ask them where eggs come from, they don't say chickens. They say Walmart," Rainey said.
Likewise with their T-shirts. Rice said she's asked children before where the fabric that makes their shirts comes from, and they answer "Belk."
Georgia citrus growers discuss marketing ideas, proposed disease management regulations at second annual conference
By Amy Carter
amy.carter@agr.georgia.gov
TIFTON The Georgia Citrus Association held its second annual meeting Feb. 26 on the University of Georgia's Tifton Campus, drawing about 300 growers and 35 vendors for discussions about marketing, regulation and protection of Georgia's newest fruit crop.
Lindy Savelle, a founding member and immediate pastpresident of the association, said the citrus industry is expanding beyond the widely planted satsuma crop to include frost-resistant varieties of tangerines, grapefruit and lemons developed by the University of Georgia.
Savelle and her brother, Clay Lamar, opened 1DOG Ventures, a citrus nursery in Southwest Georgia, to supply residential and commercial growers with citrus trees bred to thrive in Georgia. Their first trees came available last Spring, and they're already booked out to 2020 with orders for several thousand trees.
"More and more larger growers are getting in the game. We're working with a grower now that's putting in a hundred acres. That's huge. We've got a couple people thinking about 30. When you think about 30 acres, if you put in dwarf trees, that's tens of thousands of trees," she said.
The crop is appealing to established farmers and ones who
are just starting out, like the young farmer who's planting 2,800 UGA cultivars.
"He's putting in dwarf trees, ones you can pick yourself. He's putting them in high density. He's a young farmer who was able to get financing for it and he's going for it," Savelle said.
The demand is so strong that UGA hired a full-time fruit pathologist last June. Jonathan Oliver, assistant professor and extension specialist at UGA's Coastal Plains Experiment Station in Tifton, is focusing on pathogen biology and disease management in fruit crops such as blueberries, blackberries, citrus and other emerging varieties.
Mike Evans, program director of the Plant Protection Section of the Georgia Department of Agriculture in Griffin, said the department is working on regulations designed primarily to prevent the introduction of disease to Georgia citrus crops. Citrus regulations are a new venture for the state and one that will be developed in concert with the industry, including national retailers like Home Depot and Lowe's, he said. The department is preparing to release proposed rules for grower comment.
"This is your industry. You're the ones putting up the money. If this is not what you want, we need to know it so we're not butting heads," Evans said.
Citrus greening and the Asian psyllid that causes it have

been detected on residential trees in Georgia. "We have found greening over on the coast, in a couple
of counties, and found the psyllid in every one of our coastal counties," Evans said. "We know we have the pathogen, we know we have the vector, so we're going to have to regulate that in some fashion."
