Farmers Conference draws producers from eight states
By Amy Carter
amy.carter@agr.georgia.gov
ALBANY The Federation of Southern Cooperatives held its 35th Annual Georgia Farmers Conference here Feb. 15 and 16.This year marks the 50th since the federation's founding as the voice for African-American farmers and their families. The organization represents eight Southern states: Georgia, Florida, Alabama, North and South Carolina, Mississippi, Kentucky and Texas.
Executive Director Cornelius Blanding said the focus of the conference was to identify for members the resources available to small farmers and landowners, promote the sustainability of rural communities, and identify issues unique to black and low-income farmers that need to be addressed in the 2018 Farm Bill.
Heirs' Property Rights are chief among the issues that are affecting multigenerational farm families who share ownership through informal inheritances passed from parents to children to grandchildren and great-grandchildren. When the original owners of the farm die without a will and ownership shares are diluted through the generations, there can be no clear title established for the property, which makes it impossible to qualify for financial assistance from banks and the USDA.
Ben Davis of Tennessee said he is sitting on a million dollars' worth of timber that he cannot harvest on a family farm in Mississippi. With family members scattered all across the country and many uninterested in farming, Davis said it is timeconsuming and expensive to track down everyone with an interest in the property
to get their permission to alter the land. Some 200 heirs have an interest in a single 1,200-acre tract.
Further complicating the issue is the action of unscrupulous people who prey on families in this situation, offering mon-
ey for individual shares and then forcing the sale of the entire property.
"Lots of black land in the last 50 years has been lost that way," said John Zippert, program operations director for the federation, which is based in Epes, Ala.
The final day of the conference featured a "Voices from the Field" segment for members. Listening in on that session are Cornelius Blanding, Federation of Southern Cooperatives executive director (left), Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Gary Black (center) and Jim Ewing, regional director of the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service.
Southwest Georgia artist Sam X, who partners with Fort Valley State University to pair art instruction with ag education, says his goal is to "grow pride in farming."
Jonnell and Carol Minefee talked to federation members about solar services through Solar Tyme of Macon.
Bobby Wilson, chief executive officer of the Metro Atlanta Urban Farm at College Park, speaks to the need for a greater emphasis on agriculture education in inner city classrooms "to train our next generation of farmers."
Even cowgirls love The Varsity. Greer Cofield of Cartersville was first in line for hotdogs, french fries and onion rings.
Youth Equine Day at the Capitol
The Georgia Agricultural Commodity Commission for Equine hosted its annual Youth Equine Day at the Capitol Feb. 8. The event is invitation-only for equestrians who excelled in world, national and state horse shows during the year previous. Gov. Nathan Deal, Agriculture Commissioner Gary Black and Georgia Farm Bureau President Gerald Long addressed the group during lunch, offering words of encouragement to youth and parents involved in competitive horsemanship. All three spoke of the value of equine competitions for teach-
ing responsibility at an early cause you can be anything you age. "Young people, set your want to be." goals high," Long said, "be- -Amy Carter/GDA

Georgia goat owners donate animals to Haitian farmers
Members of the Southeastern Kiko Goat Association partnered with the Christian Veterinary Mission based in Seattle, Wash., to donate 10 Kiko goats to farmers in Haiti. The goats were flown out of Fort Pierce, Fla., to Haiti on Feb. 20.
Marilyn Seleska of Quitman, who serves as president of the association, said the goal of the partnership is to improve the lives of poor farmers in Haiti by giving them goats that will improve their herds.
The donation was proposed to the association by Fitzgerald veterinarian Dr. Dwain Smith, and organized by mission volunteer Dr. Ivan Barineau of Havana, Fla. Barineau specifically requested Kiko goats because of their ability to survive in harsh conditions, their mothering
ability and their high resistance to parasites. Before the goats could be transported, a quarantine
site had to be located and plans made to vaccinate and prepare the goats for transport. David Evans, Fitzgerald High School Ag teacher, asked his father, Wiley Evans, for space on his farm. Smith performed exams and administered vaccinations.
SEKGA members who donated goats and/or supplies to the mission included:
Bob and Marilyn Seleska, Quitman Susie Jones, LaGrange Ed and Carolyn Drexler, Fitzgerald Wayne Forshee, Senoa Dawn Ring, Hogansville Mark Gentry, High Springs Ann Gerrish, Warner Robins Granville and Mary Cheatham, Culleoka, Tenn. Gail, Chad & Kristen Maxwell, Waycross Dr. Dwain Smith, Fitzgerald Dr. Ivan Barineau, Havana, Fla.
Ed Drexler, Wayne Forshee, Dawn Ring and Susie Jones donated Kiko goats for farmers in Haiti.
SEKGA is a nonprofit organization of more than 200 members whose goal is to promote and improve the Kiko breed. To donate, contact: Carolyn Drexler, SEKGA Treasurer, 135A Drexler Lane, Fitzgerald, Ga. 31750. Learn more about the Christian Veterinary Mission online at cvmusa.org.

Depression: An Overlooked
Issue in Rural Communities
By Dr. K. Bryant Smalley
I grew up in the very small town of Toomsboro, Georgia, population 500. Like so many rural communities, in my hometown you just did not talk about mental health it was a taboo subject. Even today, many people in rural communities still do not talk openly about mental health concerns.
Because of this, the impact of issues like depression is often overlooked. While many people think of depression as crying all of the time, people who are depressed may not cry at all. In addition to sadness and crying, other common signs of depression include loss of interest in things that were previously enjoyed, gaining or losing weight, sleeping too much or not enough, loss of energy, feelings of worthlessness or hopelessness, indecisiveness and, for men in particular, irritability. Depression is a serious health condition not only because of the direct impact of the symptoms on individuals and families, but also because more than 90 percent of people who die by suicide have depression or another mental health condition. It's important to talk about rural depression because there are actually aspects of rural living that increase the risk of developing depression. Rural residents are more likely to feel isolated, are more likely to be unemployed and live in poverty, and are less likely to have health insurance. Also, having a serious medical condition such as diabetes or heart disease both of which are more common in rural communities further increases the risk for depression. For this reason, people who live in rural areas are actually more likely to have depression than people who live in urban areas. But knowing all this, there is still a cultural pressure not to talk about mental health issues in rural communities. Even when people do realize they need help, their families may not support them going to see a mental health professional or they may be worried that the whole town will know they're having problems because their car is parked at the therapist's office. Another challenge is that for many rural residents it is very hard to access mental health care when it is needed; in fact, more than 150 of Georgia's 159 counties contain federally designated "mental health provider shortage areas," and these shortage areas are more likely to be in rural than urban communities. For this reason, most people end up seeing their primary care physician for mental health concerns, and it's important for people to keep in mind that they can talk to their doctor about their mental health. While it can sometimes seem like the issue of depression is overwhelming, there are many things that can be done to help. Treatments like therapy or medications can help manage the symptoms of depression, but people can't get help if they don't feel that it's okay to ask for it. All of us can help by being more open to discussing mental health issues and supporting people when they do want to reach out for help. There are also innovative new ways of treating depression that can be particularly helpful in rural communities. Integrated care models have physicians and mental health professionals located in the same building, so it's easier to access mental health services when needed. It also helps build a care team for people whose physical health conditions are contributing to their depression each one impacts the other, and if both are treated at the same time, the patient actually has better outcomes. For communities without a psychologist or psychiatrist, telemedicine allows people to access mental health services. Telemedicine, which can be equally as effective as in-person mental health services, uses video conferencing to connect patients at a clinic or doctor's office to a mental health provider in another location. Even though rural residents are more likely to develop depression, there are things that can be done to help. If you or someone you know might be suffering from depression or another mental health concern, look for a local mental health provider or reach out to your doctor or faith leader. If you are having trouble finding a place to receive mental health services, call the Georgia Crisis and Access Line at 1.800.715.4225 or visit them online at www.mygcal.com. 22 Georgia FFA Chapters visit the Capitol in Atlanta
As part of the National FFA Week celebration, 22 of Georgia's FFA chapters paid a visit to the Georgia State Capitol on Feb. 20. State FFA members, advisors, alumni and staff are invited to tour the Capitol grounds annually and to meet with state government officials while the General Assembly is in session. This year marked the 31st annual FFA Day at the
Capitol. The 2017-2018 Georgia FFA State Officers met with Agriculture Commissioner Gary W. Black during their visit. The state officer team was given a tour of the Food Safety Laboratories at the Georgia Department of Agriculture's headquarters across from the Capitol.

Georgia Grown marketing program helps small food businesses reach distant markets

JEKYLL ISLAND A foggy day at the beach beats a sunny day just about anywhere else, as 20 Georgia Grown vendors learned at Whiskey, Wine & Wildlife, an annual fundraiser hosted by The Westin Hotel on Jekyll to benefit the Jekyll Island Foundation. The sold-out event drew more than 1,200 people to the newly built Jekyll Island Beach Village Feb. 10 to sample Southern spirits and cuisine and to meet coastal wildlife such as alligators and sea turtles up close and personal.
Georgia Grown has been participating in the event for three years. Vendors marketing their value-added food products under the Georgia Grown logo are invited each year to be a part of the Georgia Grown Village at a discounted exhibitor's rate.
Tom Neville, area marketing manager for Georgia Grown on the coast, said the event is an effective way to build brand recognition in a unique region of the state.
"I like the casualness of the event and the timing of it," Neville said. "It's the perfect time of year for folks to visit the coast, and to stimulate tourism down here as well."
Richard Cowart of Bootleg Farm in Springfield has joined Georgia Grown at similar events, but this was his first year at Whiskey, Wine & Wildlife.
"These events are an excellent opportunity for us to get out and showcase our product," he said. "Of course we hope to sell product today, but we also hope to network with other avenues to increase our profile in the state."
Bootleg Farm raises Nubian and Saanen dairy goats to produce a line of hard and soft cheeses.
Richard Cowart offers samples of goat cheese made on Bootleg Farm in Springfield.
"Right now we're milking about 48 (goats) through the milk line," Cowart said. "That number's changing. Since my trip down here we've had two deliveries with about seven more to deliver today."
The Grade A-dairy started as a hobby with a small herd of briar goats Cowart's wife, Wendy, kept. The couple upgraded to dairy breeds four years ago.
Tommie Williams, owner of Terra Dolce Farms in Lyons, was a first-timer at the Jekyll event, although he's been a member of Georgia Grown for four years. Williams grows olives for a line of extra virgin olive oil he markets under the Terra Dolce name. Having just increased his production acreage from five acres to 25, Williams is now producing sufficient quantities to sell at festivals and events.
"I planted the first tree about seven years ago," Williams said. "I saw trees in Southwest Georgia that looked good, so I gave it a shot with five acres. The third year they made a lot of olives, so I bought a mill from Italy and started milling, knowing almost nothing about what I was doing. I went to

milling school in California at UC Davis and learned how to mill, how to store and how to bottle olive oil."
Williams, who grew up on a farm outside Lyons, saw the olive business as a challenge.
"It's a little tougher to grow them here. You just have to figure out the varieties that will not only live here but produce enough gallons per ton and enough tons per acre to warrant going after," he said.
"I'm an entrepreneur. I don't like being told something won't work."
Thaddeus and Erika Wilkins of Peachtree City said they appreciate events like Whiskey, Wine & Wildlife for the opportunity to put their Doc and Artie's line of spices, rubs, teas and sauces directly before the industry.
"We did Savannah Food and Wine and this event because the shop owners, the chefs are here," Erika Wilkins said. "This exposes us to avenues we wouldn't have access to otherwise."
Valerie Burroughs of Fayetteville offers samples of Val's Kale Chips.
Doc and Artie's is named after Erika Wilkins' godfather and grandmother.
"They worked together for about 46 years as domestics," she said. "They worked for the same family and the family was German. They came straight from Europe and didn't believe our American standards for food production were high enough so everything had to be produced for them from farm-to-table."
Their product line which has grown from a few sauces, rubs and teas to 125 in just two years is based on recipes Erika Wilkins learned from her grandmother.
"She never wrote down recipes but because I was always in the kitchen with her ... they're literally in my head," she said.
The couple joined Georgia Grown a year ago at the behest of a customer at a food event. They learned the value of it soon after making a deal with a wholesaler to distribute their products.
"We forgot to put the (Georgia Grown) logo on the label and the customer said, `We want the product, but we want the Georgia Grown logo on the product,'" Thaddeus Wilkins said. "It's the best marketing you can buy for the price."
