Consumer Advisory:

Improperly installed spray foam insulation could nullify termite bond

Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Gary W. Black and the Georgia Department of Agriculture's Structural Pest Division are encouraging homeowners to review their current pest control contracts before installing spray foam insulation in their home's crawl space.
"Spray foam insulation is a growing choice for homeowners looking to improve the energy efficiency of their home, and when applied properly, can provide many energy benefits, but it is imperative for homeowners to check their pest control contracts to ensure they are thoroughly covered," Black said.
Subterranean termite control and damage repair cost U.S. homeowners billions of dol-

lars each year. Termites pose a greater threat to homes and structures in the Southeast, and Georgia is centrally located in what is commonly referred to as the "termite belt."
The most important component of any pest management plan is the inspection process. During an inspection, areas of the structure where termites are most likely to be present must be visible to the pest management professional to appropriately assess damage or carry out prevention and control methods. When these areas are not visible, live termites and evidence of their presence may remain undetected and could ultimately void pest control contracts.
"Spray foam insulation may be applied

to the inside of crawlspaces as an alternative to traditional insulation, but unfortunately, it may also inadvertently hide termite damage and/or the presence of live termites," said Kristine Braman, head of the Entomology Department at the University of Georgia. "This could result in voiding existing termite control contracts or possibly preventing a company from providing future coverage."
Homeowners who have spray foam insulation currently installed in their home and have a pest control contract for termites should contact their pest control company to review the terms of that contract. Those considering having spray foam insulation installed and who have a pest control contract for termites

should also contact their pest control company to discuss the potential impacts such installation would have on their contract. Homeowners who are having spray foam insulation installed in their home should require the contractor to follow Georgia building code standards.
To determine if you have spray foam insulation installed in your home, contact a home inspector, an insulation contractor or pest management professional. Homeowners who would like more information can contact their local county extension agent by calling 1.800. We're expecting! Come see who's new at the Georgia National Fair in October

After more than a year of planning and four and a half months of construction, the Georgia Grown Baby Barn a live birthing exhibit of farm animals at the Georgia National Fairgrounds will welcome its first round of spectators for the 2018 Georgia National Fair in Perry Oct. 4-14.
Georgia Grown the marketing and development arm of the Georgia Department of Agriculture has spent the last year working alongside the Georgia National Fair Board, the Georgia Veterinary Medical Association and other animal industry professionals to organize the project. The Baby Barn will demonstrate the modernity of animal agriculture and animal care by hosting the live births of 10

Holstein dairy calves and allowing fair-goers to see newborn piglets on display.
According to Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Gary W. Black, the opening of this one-of-a-kind agricultural exhibition will enhance the mission of the fairgrounds and agricenter.
"Over the years, the fairgrounds have served as an educational cornerstone for Georgia's agriculture industry. The opening of the Georgia Grown Baby Barn will enhance that tradition," said Black. "We want to help people make a connection with agriculture and have them leave the fair with a stronger appreciation for the work of Georgia's farmers and farm families."
The facility will also complement Georgia Grown's mission to promote the state's locally grown and sourced products.
"We still have 170 dairies in Georgia," said Andy Harrison, commodity commissions manager at the GDA. "Our dairy industry produces a lot of milk, provides a lot of jobs, supports a lot of families and is vital to the econo-

mies of a lot of counties in the state." According to Harrison, dairy cows were
selected for the baby barn demonstrations because they are handled frequently and, therefore, are likely to adjust to the exhibit's environment more easily.
"People want locally sourced products, whether they be vegetables or dairy," said Harrison. "We thought it would be a good idea to emphasize buying local and buying Georgia Grown by having dairies that process on-farm come in and promote their products."
The Georgia Agricultural Commodity Commission for Milk agreed to purchase milk products from Georgia to distribute to Baby Barn visitors. A total of 7,000 8-ounce milk and chocolate milk bottles will be sourced from Sparkman's Cream Valley in Moultrie and Southern Swiss Dairy in Waycross.
"We believe that the Georgia Grown Baby Barn could possibly offer a rare opportunity for Georgia families, and potentially out-of-state visitors, to experience a once common phenomenon that was taken for granted by many

Georgia residents," said Matthew Sparkman, a third-generation dairyman at Sparkman Dairy Farm. "Now with the dwindling ag industry particularly the smaller family farm these educational opportunities become more critical as the next generation drifts further and further from farming."
GDA will have all hands on deck for the Baby Barn's inaugural stint at the fair. Volunteers from various GDA divisions have been assigned tasks that will ensure that the first year of the exhibit runs smoothly.
Serving as an example of united efforts across GDA divisions, Rich Lewis, director of Fuel and Measures, and Doug Killingsworth, assistant director of Fuel and Measures, will oversee transport and care of the Baby Barn cattle. Although Lewis's day job doesn't require working with livestock often, he has plenty of experience with them. Lewis owns 15 head of Angus cattle and has worked with his father on a feeder-calf operation since his youth.

Mercer Medical Moment:
Pesticide use in home gardens

By Christy Bridges

A pesticide is defined as any substance used to kill, repel or control certain insects or other organisms considered to be pests. Pesticides used frequently by home gardeners include herbicides, insecticides and fungicides to control weeds, bugs and fungal diseases, respectively. When used safely, pesticides can increase production in gardens by reducing losses caused by insects, diseases and weeds. However, the American Association of Poison Control Centers receives thousands of calls each year regarding accidental exposure to pesticides. Therefore, home gardeners must have a clear understanding of the safe usage and handling of these chemicals. Pesticides are labeled according to their predicted toxicity in humans1 (Table 1). Home gardeners should pay careful attention to toxicity labels on all pesticides. It is important to remember that all pesticides are toxic and have the potential to cause detrimental health effects. Always read and follow the directions on the label prior to each use. Also, keep all pesticides out of the reach of children and pets and in their original containers with the labels attached.

Georgie's Drive Thru Perry
Hello! I'm Georgie, the Georgia Grown mascot. I travel the state of Georgia promoting our No. 1 industry agriculture! October is my favorite month because that's when Perry hosts the Georgia National Fair. In 1983, state Rep. Larry Walker of Perry proposed construction of the Georgia National Fairgrounds and Agricenter to provide the youth of Georgia with better facilities to show their livestock. The first fair was hosted at the new fairgrounds on Oct. 5, 1990. Georgia Grown has its own building there, which opened in 2013. New attractions that highlight Georgia agriculture are added each year. In 2016, Georgie's Farm was opened to give kids the opportunity learn how Georgia Grown products go from the farm to their trays in the school cafeteria. This year, there will be not just one addition to the building, but a whole bunch of little ones. Each day of the fair, veterinarians from across the state will assist in delivering Holstein calves in the Georgia Grown Baby Barn. There will also be litters of newborn pigs for everyone to see. I'll be waiting to meet you there, so tell your parents to bring you by the Georgia Grown Building. It's sure to deliver a fun experience!

Preventing exposure to pesticides during the application process is an important component of pesticide safety. Most exposure to pesticides occurs via skin absorption from splashing during mixing or overspray during application. It is recommended that personal protection equipment be worn while mixing and applying pesticides. The minimum PPE is usually defined on the label of the pesticide.
Gloves, long pants, long-sleeved shirts and eye protection are examples of appropriate PPE. Following application of the pesticide, precautions must be taken so that the clothing worn during the application process does not contaminate other household items. For example, clothing may be laundered separately from other clothing to avoid potential cross-contamination. Heavily contaminated clothing should be discarded.
The symptoms of acute (short-term) exposure may differ depending on the pesticide used. In general, symptoms may include nausea, dizziness, diarrhea, excessive sweating, mental confusion, blurred vision and vomiting.2 Symptoms and their severity depend on the route and amount of exposure.
If you have symptoms of pesticide exposure, you should contact a medical professional. The American Association of Poison Control Centers has a network of regional poison control centers with specially trained medical professionals. You can receive professional advice 24 hours a day by calling the emergency hotline at 1.800.222.1222 or using the online help system at https://www. poisonhelp.org/help.
There is often a waiting period between the time the pesticide is applied and the time vegetables or fruit can be harvested. The length of this period depends on the type of crop, type of pesticide, and the concentration of pesticide. Read the pesticide label carefully for specific instructions related to this waiting period. Always wash fruits and vegetables prior to consumption.

-Christy Bridges, Ph.D., is professor of histology at Mercer University School of Medicine.

Georgia's Best Shrimp and Grits
Georgia Grown member Eagle Creek Brewing Co. of Statesboro took first prize at the Jekyll Island Shrimp and Grits Festival Sept. 15. Atlanta Chef Todd Richards and CNN/HLN journalist and blogger Henna Bakshi presented the award to Elizabeth Sterling Morris, second from left, and Gail Drake Dismuke, second from right, on the event's main stage. An annual celebration of a uniquely Southern dish, the festival draws about 45,000 people to Jekyll Island's riverfront historic district for three days of food and entertainment. Twenty-two Georgia Grown members handed out samples and made names for themselves among the coastal population.

More than just the fair in fall
The Georgia National Fairgrounds and Agricenter touches the future of agriculture

By Amy Carter
amy.carter@agr.georgia.gov
PERRY Over the course of 11 days every October, agriculture takes center stage at the Georgia National Fairgrounds and Agricenter. Situated on 1,100 acres adjacent to Interstate 75 south of Macon, the fairgrounds put Georgia's No. 1 industry on prominent display not only during the Georgia National Fair each fall, but year-round with livestock shows and special events.
The center was proposed in the mid-1980s to provide upgraded show facilities for Georgia's youth, and it continues to serve in that capacity to this day. According to Philip Gentry, agricultural/youth livestock director, the center hosts livestock events 48 weekends a year. In fact, Gentry got his own start showing livestock in the parking lot on the fairgrounds.
"My first 4-H project was a lamb and we actually bought it in the parking lot out there," he recalled while sitting in the stands of the Sutherland Arena watching members of the American Junior Brahman Association show bull calves in July.
The association hosted its 39th annual "All American" National Brahman Show in Perry July 1-7. It was the Texas-based organization's first time in Georgia, and the opportunity to pitch Perry as a site for the show came during an idle conversation at the Georgia Cattlemen's Expo.
"Almost a year ago we started working with them to get them here and it's been a really good event so far," Gentry said. "We are excited to have them and hope to be their East Coast home."
For many families Gentry's included livestock shows double as vacations, so the show site becomes their home-away-fromhome the week they're on site.
Tiffany Barfield of Okeechobee, Fla., drove seven hours to Perry with three trailers and trucks and 17 cattle so that her daughters, Bailey and Hailey, could show in the All American. They set up a base of operations in a barn stall near their cattle, stocked it with all the comforts of home and decorated it to reflect the show's theme of "Christmas in July."
"We try to make it homey, so everybody can come back and relax after their events," Barfield said.

"I can't help but think that the domino effect is that they make better college students, better employers, better employees, and that their futures benefit from that."

WHO'S NEW: Baby Barn will deliver

Continued From Page 1

"I may not know a lot about a lot of things, but I know about hauling cattle," said Lewis. "Doug and I will oversee the transport of cows from the dairy to the Baby Barn. In addition to that, we will go out to the farm twice a day to get feed and bring it back to keep the cows fed."
Chad Drew, a warehouse and bonding inspector for the GDA, is one of eight employees assigned to the cattle hauling team. From showing livestock as an FFA member to inspecting Georgia stockyards, Drew is another experienced livestock handler who believes in the Baby Barn and the educational impact the facility will have on the public and seasoned agriculturalists alike.
"It's going to be educational for everyone, even people like me, who have worked in it their whole lives," Drew said. "The Baby Barn is going to stir up a certain level of curiosity. It will help people to realize that agriculture is more than going to get milk at the store or going to get cuts of meat at the butcher."

The department's Communications, Marketing, Animal Industry, Information Technology and other divisions will be working alongside student ambassadors from the University of Georgia, Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College and Fort Valley State University, who have been recruited to serve as volunteers in the facility, as have youth members of 4-H and FFA.
The Georgia National Fairgrounds and Agricenter has a history of showcasing Georgia's agriculture industry to the public. According to Harrison, the opening of the Georgia Grown Baby Barn this fall will be no exception to that mission, offering a glimpse into a vital part of modern animal husbandry.
"Everything we are doing, we are doing to emphasize animal agriculture and how modern it is," said Harrison. "This Baby Barn is a platform to help people understand that milk doesn't just come from the grocery store. It will show people the proper handling and care of these animals."
