Life offers few guarantees outside of death and taxes, but peanut growers throughout the Southeast get a fair measure of assurance that the seeds they sow will sprout and grow as expected. That assurance comes thanks to the diligent work of an army of skilled specialists working on the farmers' behalf.
Months before farmers start cultivating peanuts in late April, the Georgia Department of Agriculture's Tifton Lab begins testing samples of the varieties that seed companies will offer for sale to farmers in the upcoming season. During the first six months of 2018, the lab received 10,631 peanut samples. Each sample is evaluated with a 200-seed germination test.
Dedria "DeeDee" Smith, seed lab director, said the lab hires 16 temporary workers including college interns to assist in processing seed samples during peanut season. Georgia

grows nearly half of the nation's total peanut crop, and peanuts represent about half of all seed samples processed by the Tifton lab annually. Other peanut-growing states including Alabama, Florida and Texas send their samples to Georgia for testing, as well.
The seeds are arranged in lots of 25 on a chemical-free paper towel substrate, and stored for seven days in a simulation of optimal field conditions designed to give an indication of vigor and germination. Seeds are evaluated for emergence and for development of appropriate structures such as roots and shoots, as well as obvious defects.
"If you're paying 82, 83, 84, 85 cents a pound for peanuts, you want to plant as few seeds per acre as you can to get a high yield, so you want to know what your germination rate will be," said Terry Hollifield, executive director of the Georgia Crop Improvement Association in Athens.
A germination rate above 75 percent that is, 75 out of every 100 seeds sprouting as expected is required for certification by the association. This year's samples showed an average germination of 88 percent, according to Smith at the Tifton Lab.
"When a farmer sees our certified blue tag, he knows the seed has been produced through a program that is going to assure him of receiving a quality product," Hollifield said.
The Tifton Seed Lab's germination tests are just one step in the process of delivering quality seed to Georgia farmers. The crop improvement association also conducts field inspections to verify the variety and purity of seed lots. Last year the association field-inspected 166,000 acres of crops; 140,000 acres were peanuts, Hollifield said.
Mark Israel's Sumter County farm was among the latter. Israel is a third-generation peanut farmer. His grandfather started growing peanuts at the invitation of Tom Huston, founder of the company that would become Tom's Foods.

Mercer Medical Moment: What you need to know about rabies

Rabies is a disease caused by a vi-

rus that is transmitted from the bite of

an infected wild animal (bat, raccoon,

skunk, fox, coyote, woodchuck) to a

farm animal, a pet (cat, dog, ferret) or

a person. Raccoons are responsible for

most rabies cases in the state of Geor-

gia.

The infected animal transmits rabies

through its saliva (spit) when it bites a non-infected animal

or person. The virus may also be spread when infected sa-

liva gets into an open wound on the skin or in the mouth or

eyes. Rarely, the virus has been transmitted to organ trans-

plant recipients through transfer of infected tissue.

The virus causes an infection in the brain, which leads

to death if not treated. One to three people die in the United

States every year from rabies. It is preventable almost 100

percent of the time when treatment including the rabies

vaccine and medication that allows the immune system to

neutralize the virus is administered soon after a rabies

exposure occurs.

There is no known, effective treatment for rabies once

the symptoms of the illness have developed. Early symp-

toms in people are non-specific and may be very similar

to those of the flu fever, headache, muscle pain, loss of

appetite and general discomfort/weakness. There also may

be a prickling or itching sensation at the site of the bite.

Once the infection reaches the brain, the following

symptoms can occur: inability to sleep, anxiety, confusion,

excitation, hallucinations, agitation, irritability, seizures,

stiff neck, dilated pupils in the eyes, excessive drooling,

difficulty swallowing, fear of water, paralysis and even

coma. The progression of symptoms can take anywhere

from two to 10 days, with death usually occurring within

days of the onset of symptoms. Wild animal bite wounds can also cause serious injury,
such as nerve or tendon damage and even bacterial infection at the site of the bite and/or in the bloodstream. For many types of bite wounds, immediate gentle flushing with water or a dilute iodine solution has been shown to markedly decrease the risk of bacterial infection and the likelihood of rabies.
You should receive a tetanus shot if you have not been vaccinated in 10 or more years. Your doctor should make decisions regarding the use of antibiotics and wound closure.
Any wild or stray animal that acts abnormally should be suspected of having rabies. Rabid animals may appear restless, be aggressive or seem overly friendly, have difficulty walking, or appear to be choking.
Pets that have never been vaccinated for rabies and have been exposed to or bitten by a rabid animal should be euthanized. If the owner is unwilling to have this done, the animal must be placed in strict isolation for six months by a veterinarian and vaccinated one month before being released. A qualified veterinarian must evaluate animals with expired rabies vaccinations.
If the animal that bit you can be contained or captured without causing more injury, do so and contact an animal control officer immediately. Any injuries to the head of the suspicious animal should be avoided as the resulting damage may make it difficult to perform laboratory tests to determine whether the animal has rabies. Tell your doctor that you have captured the animal that bit you. Your doctor may then contact the local health department to determine what to do with the animal.

Hello! I'm Georgie, the Georgia Grown mascot. I travel the state of Georgia promoting our No. 1 industry agriculture. Did you know that July is National Pickle Month? Now you do! There are so many fruits and vegetables that can be pickled, like zucchini or yellow squash, green beans, okra, watermelon rind and Peter Piper's favorite peppers. But I think the best pickles are made from cucumbers. There are so many delicious kinds of cucumber pickles to enjoy dill, Kosher dill, fermented, fresh pack, bread and butter, 14-day sweet pickles, sour pickles, and gherkins. There are also many ways to enjoy them, including chips, spears, sandwich stackers, halves and whole. To celebrate Pickle Month, I decided to go pick a peck of cucumbers to pickle straight off the vine! And where do the freshest, tastiest cucumbers come from? Georgia, of course. There are lots of places that grow cucumbers in Georgia and each one grows them completely different. Last year, when I visited Southern Valley near Norman Park to film my now famous "Georgie's Drive Thru Georgia Agriculture" videos, my friend Austin showed me fields full of cucumbers growing vertically on fences. Then I went to Milan to the Walker-Watkins Farm and saw a field full of cucumber combines. That was a really big dill for me!

Lessons from Granny's dinner table

Growing up, there were always three

rules to abide by when sitting down to

eat supper at Granny's house:

1) Ask the blessing

2) Clean your plate

3) Ask to be excused before

I was usually observant of rules one

and three, but rule two gave me a fit on

most occasions, because some days I didn't want to eat

field peas for the thousandth time, and I wouldn't dare

touch a tomato to save my life. (Still guilty. Please don't

revoke my credentials as a Southern woman.)

"Well now, ain't that just plumb silly," Granny would

scold me in her thick, Southern drawl, furrowing her brow

slightly to express her disappointment.

Sadly, my Granny passed away two years ago, and it

wasn't until then that I took ample time to reflect on and

truly appreciate her hard-nosed character.

She was the product of a different time. A child dur-

ing the Great Depression and the youngest of five, Gran-

ny grew up in a rural Georgia household full of hungry

mouths. In the wake of hard times, she and her siblings

were conditioned to eat when fed. This experience altered

her state of thinking when it came to food, which was evi-

dent each time we gathered around her table with forks

and knives in hand.

When I reflect on the time I spent battling the evils of

the garden-grown tomato and reviving my bored palate

after eating another helping of crowder peas, I realized an

important lesson behind rule number two. Food waste is an issue in American homes and, on a larger scale, American farms.
According to Feeding America, one in eight Americans struggle with food insecurity, and while some may have access to food, the nutritional value may not be adequate. Meanwhile, one quarter of food produced for human consumption is lost annually in the U.S. because of market restrictions, although rejected produce is often still edible and nutritious.
A second lesson that Granny taught me is that the way to a person's heart is through their belly. Any guest that entered her home could testify to her belief in that, as she would begin offering up food as soon as you crossed the threshold of the door. Making sure people never went hungry was a task she took seriously, much like the gleaning ministry administered by the Society of St. Andrew.
Recently, I had the opportunity to visit with Adam Graham, state director of SoSA. We discussed how the gleaning network ministry works to address food waste and hunger by connecting the dots between resources and recipients--getting food that would be wasted onto the plates of America's hungry.
Gracious acts from farmers and volunteers is a first step in making sure that Americans facing hunger obtain the sustenance they need. Just like my Granny would say, it'd be "plumb silly" to let perfectly nutritious produce go to waste. Cook Georgia Grown: Hallelujah Salsa!
Ingredients: 4 or 5 medium tomatoes 1 medium onion 1 bell pepper (any color) 1 can corn 2 cans any kind of beans (kidney, pinto, black-eyed peas, etc.) Diced jalapenos, to taste (1) 16 oz bottle Catalina dressing (more if desired)
Preparation: Cut up 4 or 5 medium tomatoes, 1 medium onion and 1 bell pepper. Dump all into bowl. Drain and add 1 can corn and any two kinds of canned beans. Cut up 8-12 slices of jalapeno peppers (less or more to taste). Pour one 16 oz. bottle of Catalina dressing over all and stir. Serve with Fritos or tortilla chips. Serves 8-10.

Georgia Grown goes to market

The historic Municipal Market in Atlanta's Sweet Auburn neighborhood was the venue for the third in a series of networking events being held statewide for Georgia Grown members. The market opened in 1924. It houses 30 local businesses, including produce dealers, butchers, a seafood market, a bakery, a cooking school, a pharmacy and 10 restaurants.
The June 28 event drew about 50 members of the Georgia Department of Agriculture's marketing program for Georgia food producers. The series is designed to facilitate business-to-business relationships between Georgia Grown vendors. Many use the time to share tips for mastering challenges and building on the successes that are so hard-won for small business start-ups. Future Georgia Grown networking events are being planned for Augusta, Columbus and Moultrie.

USDA helps producers prepare for seed cotton safety net programs

GDA's Food Safety Division receives national recognition

Athens The U.S. Department of Agriculture is sending acreage history and yield reports to agricultural producers in Georgia with generic base acres covered by the Agriculture Risk Coverage and Price Loss Coverage programs. Farm Service Agency State Executive Director Tas Smith said the information will help producers decide the best options for how to allocate generic base acres, given the addition of seed cotton as a covered commodity in the programs.
The Bipartisan Budget Act of 2018 amended the 2014 Farm Bill, adding seed cotton as a covered commodity under the ARC and PLC programs. In late June, FSA started sending information on current generic base acres, yields and 2008-2012 planting history.
Per the act, FSA is using the period 2009 through 2012 to compute the conversion of generic base acres to seed cotton base acres. Also, FSA is using 2008 through 2012 to calculate yield updates to seed cotton. The updates are an important part of preparing agricultural producers in Georgia and other states to make decisions on allocating generic basic acres and updating yields for seed cotton.
This summer, producers will have an opportunity to allocate their generic base acres and update their seed cotton yield.
All producers electing to participate in either the ARC or PLC program will be required to make a one-time, unanimous and irrevocable election, choosing between price protection and county revenue protection for the 2018 crop year for seed cotton only. Producers who elected ARC with the individual farm option will continue with that option since that election is applicable to all base acres on the farm. The final step to participate requires producers with farms with seed cotton base acres to sign contracts for ARC or PLC for 2018 this summer.
The anticipated timeline is: June 29: Producers are mailed letters notifying them of current generic base acres
and yields and 2008 to 2012 planting history. July: An online decision tool for ARC and PLC becomes available. Producers have
opportunity to update yields and allocate generic base acres for ARC and PLC. Late July: ARC and PLC one-time elections occur for seed cotton. Late July: ARC and PLC sign-up for 2018 starts for farms with seed cotton base
acres.

Burlington, Vt. The Georgia Department of Agriculture's Food Safety Division was awarded the Elliot O. Grosvenor Food Safety Award at the 122nd Annual Educational Conference hosted by the Association of Food and Drug Officials on June 12.
The Elliot O. Grosvenor Food Safety Award was created to recognize leaders who best showcase improvement, innovation or sustained high performance within a food safety program. A food safety program could include responsibility for: food safety, food protection, food defense or food sanitation.
"It is such an honor to have our food safety program recognized by such a prestigious award," said Natalie Adan, director of the GDA's Food Safety Division. "We could not have achieved this status without having such dedicated, passionate people in our food safety program, and mutual reliance from our partner regulatory agencies, industry, academia and consumers. This is a great example of how the integrated food safety system approach helps advance food safety and allows us to focus on prevention. We all win."
Each year, AFDO seeks nominations from throughout the food safety community and convenes an independent panel of food safety experts from academia, industry and the regulatory community to select the winners. Nominations are evaluated based on proven achievements that further food safety breakthroughs, systems improvements, education and training, and community outreach.
According to AFDO, the GDA exemplifies the spirit of advancing a nationally integrated food safety system by maintaining conformance with the Manufactured Food Regulatory Program Standards and providing the U.S. Food and Drug Administration the foundation to improve the quality of contracts, coordination of inspections, investigations and enforcement to effectively and efficiently protect public health.
By using the standards as a road-map, GDA has made tremendous strides in building a high-quality regulatory program that is organized, focused, and accountable, according to AFDO. GDA continues to build capacity and maintain the foundational core necessary to sustain a robust integrated system by relying on mutual reliance tactics that protect public health. This joint approach is beneficial in conserving resources, avoiding duplication of work, improving communication between agencies, and promoting an integrated methodology of a unified workforce.
"Our food safety team is the best of the best and we are proud that they have been officially recognized with this highly respected and distinguished award," said Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Gary W. Black.

Farmers work with charity to make a second harvest for the hungry

The Social Circle Theater's blueberry patch serves as a Upick fundraiser, the proceeds funding scholarships for young artists. The likelihood that the entire crop will be harvested is slim, which raises the question what will become of the remaining fruit?
With the help of the Society of St. Andrew, an ecumenical, non-profit organization which seeks to eliminate food waste, a portion of that extra produce will be collected and distributed to various food banks, soup kitchens and homeless shelters in Social Circle and surrounding communities.
Since its founding in 1979, SoSA's mission has been to provide those in need with fresh produce to supplement the nonperishable items often donated to feeding programs. The organization is headquartered in Virginia, but expanded in 1992 to establish regional offices tasked with coordinating the gleaning network. According to Adam Graham, SoSA's regional director for Georgia, gleaning the harvesting of leftover produce to feed the hungry is an agricultural practice as aged as the Old Testament.
SoSA established a regional office in Georgia in 2007, helping farmers and gardeners across the state to give back to the communities in which they work and live.
"There is a lot of food that Georgian producers waste, and it's not because they want to," said Graham. "It's because they don't have an outlet when the grocery stores reject it, and the packing house is so full you just can't put anything else in there."
By pairing up with food producers who are willing to donate their surplus or unmarketable fruits and vegetables, SoSA bridges the gap between food waste and the people who can use food resources that would otherwise be left in the fields to rot.

Blueberries grow in the Social Circle Theater's blueberry patch. people only think of food waste through grocery stores, people who buy food and throw it away before they prepare it, or restaurant waste," said Sandi Newman, South Georgia program coordinator for SoSA in Tifton. "But this is where farmers have to grow a certain percentage over what they are contracted for to make up for weather issues or disease, or where the market declines and they are left with excess produce remaining in the field."
SoSA serves as a liaison between farmers and feeding agencies by leading field gleanings made up of volunteers who want to give back to their community, said Newman. As a volunteer-driven ministry, the gleaning network carries out

its mission at no cost to the farmer, volunteers or produce recipients.
SoSA works with groups of all kinds to orchestrate volunteer efforts. There are volunteer opportunities for individuals as well as groups large and small, and an array of tasks for helping hands who may be unable to glean but can serve in other ways.
"We'll take any kind of group, as far as a gleaner goes," said Graham. "Senior groups, church groups, 4-H."
Bill Brim, co-owner of Lewis Taylor Farms in Tifton, says market quality standards force a lot of quality produce to go to waste.
"We've got all these vegetables that there is nothing wrong with them, it's just that our consuming public and chain stores want it to be perfect. So, when we grade we have to grade really hard. It may have a scrape, a scratch or a little scuff on it," said Brim. "This makes for a lot of good product that's going to waste."
The organization is always seeking partner farmers of various commodities and sizes. From operations as sizable as Lewis Taylor Farms to the Social Circle Theater to a backyard gardener, all donations are welcome and encouraged.
Those who donate will certainly reap the personal and professional benefits of their generosity. Farmers receive a yearend letter summarizing the total pounds of produce donated. This letter proves helpful when filing taxes as the food donation deduction may apply. Plus, giving back makes farmers feel good, said Brim.
"It's a matter of taking just a little extra time to do it. We are strong proponents of giving back to the community. We think it's real important," said Brim. "We've been blessed so we might as well bless somebody else."

Peanuts: Seed growers follow strict separation protocols to ensure uniform crops

Israel said. Israel's father long ago transitioned to growing peanuts for
seed. The crop Israel is tending now represents the 73rd for his father, Harold Israel, who is 92.
"This was going on on this farm before I was born," Israel said. "Every peanut I've ever grown was a seed peanut."
Israel and his family work closely with Ralph Johnson and Justin Tanner at the Georgia Seed Development Commission to take breeder seed and increase it for commercial sale. He works 1,400 acres of a much larger family farm. About 350 acres of his share is in peanuts. Israel said his annual harvest comes in between 5,000 and 6,500 pounds and occasionally as much as 7,000 pounds of peanuts per acre.
"Whatever the currently popular variety is and what they think will be the new `next thing' is what we increase for them," he said.

He maintains strict quality controls on the farm to keep different varieties pure, thus meeting the Georgia Crop Improvement Association's certification rules that ensure farmers are getting the promised variety that will germinate as expected.
"If there wasn't a system to segregate one peanut from another, then when somebody bought a sack of peanut seed there may be three different varieties with three different maturity dates on it," Israel said. "I'm growing two varieties for the foundation peanut center and there's probably 10 days of maturity difference in them. Some are a lot longer than that."
Georgia Seed Development was established by the Georgia General Assembly in 1959 to receive breeder seed of various crops developed by the University of Georgia, produce foundation seed for producers to plant, and to promote those crops statewide.

l Peanuts are one of Georgia's top 10 commodities by value, representing $624.4 million or 4.54 percent of the state's $73.3 billion agriculture industry.
l Georgia is the No. 1 producer of peanuts in America, growing nearly 50 percent of the crop.
l About 70 counties in Georgia produced 1.1 million tons of peanuts per year over the past five years, according to the Georgia Peanut Commission.
