Georgia beef assessment is up for renewal
Voting is open to all cattle producers through May 31

Georgia's Agricultural Commodity Commission for Beef is encouraging beef and dairy producers to cast their ballots in May for the continuation of a $1 per head assessment to fund research, promotion and education for the industry.
The assessment collected on every sale worth $100 or more was enacted by producers in 2014. It generates about $450,000 per year in Georgia, and every dollar remains in the state.
"All of it is used for either promotion, research or education about beef, and frankly we can do some things with these dollars that can't be done with national checkoff dollars," said John Callaway, chair of the state's five-member beef commodity commission.
A national assessment of $1 per head is split 50/50 between the National Beef Board and Georgia Beef Board, a separate entity from Georgia's Agricultural Commodity Commission for Beef.
"We can do some applied research here in Georgia that directly benefits Georgia producers, and that kind of research cannot be done with national checkoff dollars," Callaway said. "As a result of that we have funded projects along with UGA faculty in the college of ag as well as the college of veterinary medicine. We encourage beef producers and dairymen to suggest things that they'd like to see research done on, and we put this out for a bid or proposal from UGA scientists and extension folks. They write up a proposal, and the five-member commission looks at it and selects the ones we want to fund."
In 2016, the commission collected $478,091 from the assessment. About $310,000 of that was committed to University of Georgia research projects. Those included a study of horn fly control on pastured beef cattle ($20,235) and manage-

ment of Bermuda grass stem maggot ($20,913). J. Keith Bertrand, professor and head of UGA's Animal and Dairy Science Department, said the $164,000 in assessment proceeds that were provided to that department last year were essential in helping the department meet its obligations to an industry worth $1.08 billion to the state.
"UGA faculty is able to leverage the dollars provided by the commission as they pursue other extramural funds. For each dollar provided by the assessment, six to seven additional dollars are gleaned from other funding sources to put towards beef research and extension programs," Bertrand said.
Callaway, who runs 125 brood cows in Coweta County, said one of the most popular projects funded by the assessment is an educational tool. For less than $2,000, the commission acquired a simulator of a pregnant cow. The calf can be repositioned to create the kind of birth complications ranchers might encounter on their farms.
"Veterinarians have actually been able to take this around to smaller groups across the state to show them what to do when they have a cow that needs assistance and to tell them whether it is something they can attempt themselves or whether they need to call a vet," Callaway said. "Beef and dairy producers have seen immediate benefits from that model. They can actually try their hand at dealing with a complicated birth."
Ballots for the assessment will be accepted throughout the month of May. They will be mailed to every producer who voted in the initial election in 2014. Producers who do not receive a ballot in the mail by May 10 and who wish to cast a vote can request a ballot by calling 855.327.6829. Voting is open to producers who did not vote previously, as well. The assessment will continue if affirmed by two-thirds of all who cast ballots.

Vidalia onion growers help nonprofits fund their dreams

Fundraisers are a niche market for onion farmers

Spring brings two fundraisers involving sweets Girl Scout cookies and Vidalia onions. While the former is better known than the latter, both are highly anticipated by many.
"There are some less than enthusiastic faces when we tell young people we're doing an onion fundraiser," said Shannon Cagle, Morgan County Cooperative Extension 4-H agent. "But then someone will say `I love onions!' or `My mother bought some, and they're really good.'"
Georgia's signature sweet onion is particularly popular with 4-H and FFA groups statewide. Onion sales not only raise much needed funds for these organizations, they present members with the opportunity to educate the public about the industry they serve.

"We like doing this because it is an agricultural fundraiser," Cagle said. "It's an opportunity to talk about the soil and about how Vidalia onions are only grown in Georgia. It allows us to teach and to reach out to the public. We provide recipes and storage tips. It brings people to our office and helps them learn what we do."
Proceeds from the sale fund various activities of the Morgan County 4-H program. Cagle said she was inspired to utilize onions in this way by Columbia County, which has one of the largest 4-H programs in the state.
"We've been doing it about 25 years," said Tripp Williams, Columbia County Extension Coordinator. "Shirley Williamson, our 4-H agent, started the program and has done a great job with it. We sold seven tons last year. We were down a bit."

Native azaleas those other azaleas that have been here all along

I haven't met a native azalea I didn't like. There are many kinds and all are worth protecting if they are growing on your property. All are worth planting if you have a spot for them. And there is probably one or more that will fit into your landscape's color scheme, as they can be pink, white, yellow, orange, red and variations and combinations in between.
My favorite is the Pinxterbloom azalea (Rhododendron periclymenoides), not because it is any better than the others, but because it is the azalea of my childhood woodland wanderings. Coming across a clump of this pale pink azalea was always a thrill. I got a rush from seeing a yellow or orange native azalea, as they were so different from the Asian varieties that are more commonly planted. Seeing my first plumleaf azalea (Rhododendron prunifolium) with its screaming red flowers blooming in July nearly took my breath away.
Because my own garden space and experience with native azaleas is limited, I turned to two experts to share some of their thoughts--horticulturist and author Erica Glasener, who is currently marketing manager at Gibbs Gardens in Ball Ground, and Patricia Collins, who serves as director of gardens at Callaway Gardens in Pine Mountain.
"The top of my list of favorite native azaleas should be, and is, the plumleaf azalea," said Collins. The plumleaf azalea is the signature plant of Callaway Gardens. Cason J. Callaway discovered some of them blooming on a July afternoon. He and his wife Virginia developed Callaway Gardens partly in an effort to preserve the azalea.
Collins likes the azalea because it blooms in midsummer, "anywhere from late June through August." Its eye-catching red flowers are a pleasant surprise, she said, "especially on a hot summer's day when you don't expect much in the way of native plants or native azaleas in color."

Another late-bloomer Collins likes is the sweet azalea (Rhododendron arborescens) for its white blooms, red stamens and sweet fragrance.
"This one should be planted near a walkway, front door or a patio so you can enjoy the smell," she suggested. "As for the early-blooming natives, I think my favorite is probably the Florida azalea (Rhododendron austrinum). It has nice yellow to yellow-orange flower color and a wonderful, lemony fragrance."
Collins said there can be a lot of color variation within a species, and natives readily hybridize in nature. If you are set on a specific color, she recommends purchasing native azaleas when they are actually in bloom so that you know exactly what you are getting. She said there are some named varieties of which you can be sure of the color, but also said that when planting a mass of azaleas she tends to like a little variation. I totally agree.

ease resistant, and many are fragrant. And, unlike many of the cultivated azaleas, the plants don't hold on to their spent blossoms."
She also likes the plumleaf azalea because of its late-blooming period, striking color and the way it draws butterflies. Another favorite is the swamp azalea (Rhododendron viscosum) with its "strongly fragrant clove-scented flowers." True to its name, it will tolerate boggy soils.
Glasener said an azalea that gets the most comments from visitors to Gibbs Gardens is the Piedmont azalea (Rhododendron canescens).
"There is a group that is the size of small flowering trees. The flowers range from white to pink and perfume the air for several weeks," she said.
As for planting native azaleas in the home landscape, Glasener likes to combine them with evergreens such as na-

tive rhododendrons, Florida anise (Illicium floridanum) and Florida leucothoe (Agarista populifolia). Oakleaf hydrangeas and native hardy gingers and ferns are also good companions.
Glasener recommends giving azaleas room to grow in the landscape.
"Many native azaleas want to be small trees," she said. "Some will reach eight to 12 feet or taller."
While some native azaleas are available at nurseries, gardeners should watch for plant sales held by the Georgia Native Plant Society, master gardeners and public gardens.
If you didn't see any native azaleas blooming this spring, remember you will have a second chance with the plumleaf azaleas this summer. Mark your calendar.

Fundraisers: Growers enjoy helping nonprofits for the benefit of others

The money raised is used for scholarships, projects and activities, and participating 4-Hers get an "onion credit" based on what they sell. That credit can be used to help pay the cost associated with 4-H activities. Williams said the community helps make the sale a success. Local businesses and volunteers from the police and fire departments assist the organization with its onion sales.
Shannon Lawrence, FFA advisor at Jackson County High School, has had positive experiences with fundraising and education through Vidalia onion sales.
"We teach a diverse group of students in our FFA program. Some have never grown anything and are blown away when they see how much is involved in producing a crop from

start to finish," Lawrence said. "We also offer a little sales training how to interact with people, how to properly take a sales order, and common courtesy. And we offer a good deal for the customer."
Fundraising would not be possible without someone actually growing the onions, of course.
Ellis Martin of Jamie Beasley Farms in Toombs County said that marketing Vidalia onions for fundraising is something they have done for "many, many years." They work primarily with church groups.
"We work with them to help make sure the fundraising is a success. It has been a good experience for both them and us. If it wasn't, they wouldn't be coming back," said Martin.

Barbara Braddy of Braddy Farms in Montgomery County has primarily grown for nonprofit causes since 2005.
"I enjoy talking to people across the United States and hearing the joy in their voices when they tell me about the success they had with their fundraisers," she said. "It helps organizations as well as your business. And many of these organizations are holding fundraisers to help others, not for their own personal profits."
Shad Dasher of Vidalia Organics in Glennville focuses almost exclusively on the fundraising market.
"Ninety-five percent of our sales are through fundraising," said the third-generation onion farmer. "We are one of the smaller growers with 50 acres of Vidalia onions. My father

and his brothers began the fundraising route, and I picked it up from them."
Dasher sells to various groups, and said he appreciates the opportunity to introduce his product to the public without having to compete with other growers for supermarket bins.
"We are big on quality," he said. "Like the old commercial for Paul Masson, `We will sell no wine before its time,' we will sell no onion before its time. We want everyone to have a good experience eating the onions and selling the onions."
He also likes to introduce the uninitiated to the sweet flavor of Vidalias.
"We sent some to Idaho for a fundraiser and a father told me, `My daughter wouldn't eat an onion until I got these Vidalias,'" Dasher said.

This is a recipe developed in the Georgia Grown Test Kitchen of Carrollton Junior High School in Carrollton. Read more about the Farm to School program in the Carrollton City Schools District on page 12.

Ingredients: lb. fresh green beans 2 cloves garlic cup cherry tomatoes 2 Tbsps. basil

2 Tbsps. olive oil 1/8 tsp. black pepper 1/8 tsp. salt

Directions: Wash green beans and snap off ends. Steam or simmer green beans for 3 minutes, then shock in cold water to hold color. Heat oil in a skillet. Add green beans and garlic, cook for 3 minutes. Cut tomatoes in half and add to skillet, cook until heated through. Add basil, salt and pepper. Serves 4.

Bobby Brantley is inducted into the Georgia Cattlemen's Hall of Fame

PERRY The Georgia Cattlemen's Association inducted Washington County rancher Bobby Brantley into its Hall of Fame March 31. The ceremony took place during the association's annual Cattlemen's Ball, held as part of its 56th annual convention and trade show and 20th annual Georgia Beef Expo in Perry.
"Congratulations to Bobby Brantley on your achievements and thank you for your support of Georgia Cattlemen's Association and Georgia's beef cattle industry," said Kyle Gillooly, association president.
Brantley began his career as a cattleman at the age of eight, when his father gave him a heifer. From that time on he knew that he wanted to raise cattle. In 1980 he purchased five registered polled Herefords after selling off part of his commercial herd. He continues to manage his ranch, Double B Farms, near Tennille.
He serves on the board of directors of the Washington County Farm Bureau, and on the advisory board for the local FFA and extension service. He is currently president of his local cattlemen's association, an office he has held for nearly 10 years. During that time, the membership has grown from 40 members to more

than 150 members. He has served on the board of the Georgia Hereford Association, been a member of the Georgia Farm Bureau Beef Cattle Advisory Committee, and is a member of NCBA. He was named Washington County Conservationist of the Year in 2011. He has received the Georgia Cattlemen's Association Top Member Recruiter Award three times, signing up more than 160 members.
Brantley graduated from Tennille High School in 1957 on his 18th birthday. He was active in FFA and 4-H throughout high school. He held offices in both clubs and won many blue ribbons for his livestock. In 1961 he married Carolyn Sanders. They have two children, Debra and Chad.
The Georgia Cattlemen's Association was established in 1961 as a grassroots organization to unite cattle producers to advance Georgia's cattle industry. The association now boasts a membership of more than 5,400. Based in Macon, the association consists of more than 80 chapters statewide supporting all aspects of beef cattle production, from pasture to plate.

Farm to School Success:
Carrollton City Schools revolutionize the way children eat

There is a place in Georgia where kindergartners gobble farm fresh green beans like candy. It is a place where vegetables are held in nearly as high esteem as pizza and french fries. This place is the Carrollton City School District.

grade, the district's nutrition department partners with educators to teach children about food production and healthy eating. The instruction begins as early as pre-k and spans the curriculum, from classroom to cafeteria. Students test their knowledge of fractions by doubling a recipe. They draw a bar graph to show the results of a taste test of a new recipe. They also learn how to read, follow and prepare recipes during live cooking demonstrations in the classroom that utilize a mobile kitchen cart fitted with an induction cooktop, griddle and prep space. The cooking cart was donated by Tanner Health System.
A typical day finds FoodCorps service member Dory Cooper behind the cart in Joseph Benefield's science classroom at Carrollton Elementary School. FoodCorps is a federal initiative that partners with schools to teach students to grow, cook and taste new, healthy foods. Cooper has been working in the Carrollton City Schools throughout the current academic year, spending the majority of her time at the 1,700-student elementary school.
Before showing the students how to prepare Greek Style Green Beans (see recipe on page 7), Cooper hands out fresh green beans and grape tomato halves to Benefield's students. She encourages the students to pick up their magnifying glasses, examine the raw materials for the recipe and discuss their observations.
Carrollton City Councilwoman Michelle Morgan and Carrollton City Board of Education Member Katie Williams work right alongside them. Linette Dodson, PhD., director of school nutrition for the district, promotes community buy-in for the farm to school initiative by welcoming parents and city leaders to lunch and learn with students. Morgan, Williams and City Councilman Met Lane visited on Make My Plate Georgia Grown Day, the final event of Georgia Ag Awareness Week, a statewide celebration of farming and food promoted by the Georgia Department of Agriculture in March.
"I'm a big proponent of what we feed the children here. It's so healthy," said Williams, whose two children attend the elementary and junior high schools. Her son often tells his younger sister about the many food choices she has to look forward to in the junior high cafeteria.
"I hear a lot of positive feedback from parents, and they are delighted that we have so many different choices," Williams said. "There's something for even the pickiest of eaters, and as busy parents it takes one less thing off of us that we have to worry about, because we don't have to worry about packing that lunch in the evening and we know that they're going to be fed wonderful, nutritious food."
Lane is hopeful that the focus on fresh vegetables will translate into healthier students.
"Maybe kids will go home and encourage their parents," he said. "When they go to

the grocery store maybe they can say, `Mom, can we buy some kale? Can we buy some corn? Can we buy some green beans?'"

"It's almost depressing that our society has evolved so much into the industrial age that we have to teach kids what farming is,'" Lane said. "I'm amazed, I guess, that our society is so advanced that we're having to go back and teach the basics."
