60 Years Serving the Georgia Farmer:
State Agriculture Building marks 60th anniversary on Capitol Square
It is so incongruous as to be almost inconceivable: A sleek six-story building in the heart of downtown Atlanta dedicated in service to and celebration of the Georgia farmer. Sixty years ago, that very notion came to life when the Agriculture Building was officially dedicated to the cause of speaking agriculture's truth to the powers gathered beneath the gold-domed Capitol.
April 2 marks the 60th anniversary of the dedication of the Agriculture Building on Capitol Square, the scenic environs surrounding Georgia's Capitol in Atlanta. The ag building was one of several government buildings built in the mid-50s to house state offices. Others included the Law and Justice and Trade and Industry buildings that flank the Capitol's south side. A 1954 addition to the older Transportation Building has since been demolished.

sic designs by Atlanta architect and lawyer A. Thomas Bradbury. Bradbury also designed the Governor's Mansion in Buckhead, a building noted for its departure from his usual style; it is his interpretation of Tara, the home place of Scarlett O'Hara, heroine of Atlantan Margaret Mitchell's epic Gone With the Wind.
Each building in the complex bears its own singular artistic touch stately Ionic columns frame the entrance to Justice but the details on the the faade of Agriculture tell a particularly rich tale. The front doors are framed by bas-relief sculptures attributed to Julian H. Harris, a Georgia architect and artist whose works adorn Hartsfield-Atlanta International Airport, Zoo Atlanta, the headquarters of the Coca-Cola Co. and the New Orleans Federal Building.
They were carved in the 1950s and depict farmers with Georgia crops and agricultural commodities including corn, sorghum, cotton, pecans, peaches, chickens, ducks, to-

Consumer Alert: Canned Chunk Light tuna recalled due to possible contamination
Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Gary W. Black is alerting Georgians to the recall of certain Bumble Bee and Chicken of the Sea canned chunk light tuna products because the products may pose a health risk to consumers. Georgia Department of Agriculture inspectors are actively checking retail stores and distribution warehouses to make sure the recalled products have been removed.
The recall is due to process deviations that occurred as part of the commercial sterilization process of the tuna products. The deviations could result in contamination by spoilage organisms or pathogens. To date, there have been no reports of illness associated with these products; however, the potential for contamination could lead to life-threatening illness if the products are
consumed. The products were distributed nationally. Bumble Bee Foods LLC is recalling
31,579 cases of canned Chunk Light Tuna, limited to three specific UPC codes with specific best-by dates. The products will be marked with a can code starting with the letter "T" (example: TOA2BSCAFB).
Tri-Union Seafoods LLC is recalling 2,745 cases of Chicken of the Sea brand canned Chunk Light Tuna, also limited to three specific UPC codes with specific lot code and best-by dates.
Consumers are advised to throw away any products that match the above descriptions. Recalled products should be placed in a closed plastic bag in a sealed trash can so other people and animals cannot eat it. Consumers may show proof of purchase to the
retail store the product was purchased from to request a refund.
Additional information about the Bumble Bee products may be found online at www. bumblebee.com/recall-march-2016/, or by calling 1.888.820.1947 between the hours of 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. EST. For additional information about the Chicken of the Sea products, call the company's 24-hour recall hotline at 1.866.600.2681.
This is one of several recalls impacting Georgia this week. To view a comprehensive list or sign up for e-mail alerts, visit www. agr.georgia.gov/recalls.aspx. Guest Column:
Biomass is the future of sustainable agriculture
By Rachel G. Blanton
AgroBiomass Co-op
AgroBiomass Co-op is funded by a USDA 2501 grant to provide education, outreach and technical assistance to veteran, minority, new and underserved farmers. ABC offers its members a ground floor opportunity to start, develop and grow their agricultural operations.
Membership is open to anyone with a commercial interest in: (1) Ag residue, (2) wood energy, and (3) perennial crops. Our aim is to turn that interest into manufactured finished products that revitalize our communities within the Georgia StrikeForce region while combining the dynamic economic driving factors of agriculture and manufacturing. Our mission is to establish a biomass supply chain of small farmers that in turn build manufacturing plants and make our co-op members money that provides a lifestyle better than any 9 to 5 job. Agriculture is Georgia's No. 1 revenue, and AgroBiomass Co-op wants to make it work for you.
Miscanthus x Giganteus and Biomass
AgroBiomass Co-op is thankful to be partnering with one of Georgia's largest farmers and growers of the biomass crop Miscanthus x Giganteus. So, what is Miscanthus x Giganteus? Miscanthus is a giant grass and ecofiber that has successfully tested in paper applications such as: filters, packaging, fluff pulp, wood pellets, use for poultry houses, and more. It opens a whole new market to replace Styrofoam as a biodegradable/compostable packaging material as more and more American cities ban the use and sale of Styrofoam.
We have used biomass energy energy from plant derived materials just like Miscanthus since people began burning wood to cook food and keep warm. Growing sustainable biomass for renewable energy is a win-win for farmers and our country as a whole. It's the only thing that can save our small to midsize farms, period. And
according to the University of Georgia, the demand for biomass, especially in the form of wood pellets, is only increasing.
Perennial crops, such as Miscanthus, are critical to our success as small farmers. This high yielding crop only needs to be planted once every 15-20 years, can be grown on poor soils, is noninvasive and will not spread past where it is planted; it reduces soil erosion, and uses significantly less fertilizer, herbicides, and pesticides than annual crops. ABC produces a high quality raw material that is both sustainable and economical.
Biomass Can Stop Farm Loss, Create Jobs, and Revital-
ize Rural Georgia: How You Can Get Involved
Farm subsidies are promoted as assistance to family farmers. In reality, when it comes to commodity crop production, they finance the demise of family farms and prevent young, beginning, veteran and socially disadvantaged farmers from beginning or continuing as agriculture professionals. Economists estimate farm subsidies inflate the value of farmland by 30 percent, which makes starting a conventional commodity farm too expensive, especially in addition to buying expensive equipment, seeds and inputs (herbicides and pesticides). With all of these groups unable to enter the industry, the average age of Georgia farmers and ranchers has increased to 60 as the state's farming population continues to drop.
AgroBiomass Co-op offers farmers and ranchers being pushed out of their careers and off their land an opportunity to stay on their farms by growing an alternative crop to meet America's energy needs, and in the long run create thousands of new jobs in rural communities.
We aim to trigger a positive economic impact so our brothers and sisters living in rural America can have a better life too. Small farmers in the rural U.S. are our country's backbone. ABC provides a way to be a good steward of the land, minimize climate change, and grow clean energy.

Good gourd!
Frank and Michelle Podjun grew these Bushel Basket gourds on their Senoia farm last summer. They measure between 59 in. and 68 in. in circumference. Known also as "basket 100 gourds" because they can weigh up to 100 lbs., these gourds are dried and used to make large baskets and decorations. Gourds have had numerous uses throughout history, including as tools, musical instruments, objects of art and food.

Arty's Garden: From cactus boy to prickly old man
By Arty Schronce
In my pre-teen years I became fascinated with cacti and succulents. I'm not sure how it started. I was taken with the oddness of the plants and how they were adapted to surviving in harsh conditions. I may have been influenced by Walt Disney's "The Living Desert." Geography was a favorite subject, and the landscapes and cultures of Mexico and the Southwest especially intrigued me. I also collected rocks at the time, and many interesting ones came from the Southwest. I imagined myself wandering through Arizona admiring saguaros, learning from the Navajos and collecting specimens of petrified wood and colorful minerals.
The highlight of my cactus years came at the 1972 Southern Living Flower Show, where a company from Florida created a map of the United States out of cacti, each state a different kind. I may have put my hand over my heart ... .
I collected what I could find and afford. I remember showing a few that were in bloom to an aunt who commented, "Who would have thought something so ugly could produce something so beautiful!" I have never thought
Fruit of the Eastern prickly pear.
cactus plants were unattractive, but I understand how some people can find their spininess less than endearing.
My collection has dwindled over the years, but I remain fascinated and retain much of what I learned from those days, such as: the difference between epiphytic and terrestrial cactuses; what is a cactus and what is a succulent; the plural can be either cacti or cactuses; and a cactus has spines, not thorns.
I did not know until years later, however, that there is a cactus native to much of eastern North America. The Eastern prickly pear (Opuntia humifusa) is just as interesting as its desert cousins and ranges from southern Ontario to Cape Cod to Florida to Texas and up to Montana. In Georgia it is generally found in sandy or rocky places such as behind sand dunes and on granite outcrops.
Eastern prickly pear has flat stem segments pads that take root almost anywhere they touch ground. These pads perform the photosynthetic work for the plant. There can be variations of the Eastern prickly pear as to growth habit, spines and flower color throughout its range. The flowers of the ones I have seen growing wild in Georgia are pure yellow. However, some have yellow flowers with rusty red at the center, some have more and longer spines and some are more upright. The taxonomy of the Eastern prickly pear and other native prickly pear species of the East and Southeast there are a couple less widespread species and hybrids is confusing and unresolved. In my garden, the Eastern prickly pear does not have many long spines and grows flat to the ground. Its small spines glochids can be removed with masking tape if they get into your bare hands.
I have grown Eastern prickly pear outdoors in pots and in the ground for years, and I love it. It has grown onto the walkway to my steps, taking root in the soil that rain washed there, similar to what would happen on a rock outcrop. Its flowers are silky and delicate, as beautiful as any respected garden flower, something that many people, like my aunt, find surprising. They are a favorite of native bees and honeybees. Box turtles and I have eaten the attractive and long-lasting purplish red fruits.
Unfortunately, Eastern prickly pear is not commonly available at nurseries, but is worth searching for. A few
Flowers of the Eastern prickly pear.
other hardy cactus species are available from mail-order and specialty nurseries. All are worth trying. The most important thing to remember is that excellent drainage, especially in winter, is a must.
And don't forget that even prickly characters can surprise us with beauty if we give them a chance.

farm out of the farmer. And as it turns out, it's on Georgia's No. 1 industry, Atlanta is also the not so far-fetched an idea that the state's farm- state's biggest consumer and biggest distributor ers would have a big presence in its largest city. of ag products. Aside from the ease of access it gives to law- Steve Fanczi, deputy executive director of makers whose work can have a direct impact the Georgia Building Authority, which owns the
complex of state office buildings clustered downtown, has done extensive research on the history of Capitol Hill and a century's worth of evolving plans for making the state government complex more accessible and useful to citizens.
Historically, the ag building has not been the lone representative of Georgia's farmers in the capital. It was constructed near a three-story office building long occupied by The International Harvester Co. Also in the neighborhood was a line of railroad freight warehouses on a street named Produce Way. A newspaper named The Ruralist Press operated right next door, and a sprawling rail yard in the building's backyard had long hosted the freight trains that distributed the fruits and vegetables of Georgia farmers' labors far and wide. At one time, that produce was even delivered by covered wagon.
Interestingly enough, while the building that serves as the headquarters of all its administrative and field operations is 60 years old, the department itself was organized in 1874, making it the Photo by Arty Schronce oldest in the nation.
