Rains bring hope to farmers crippled by drought
Future forecast shows possibility for more precipitation in winter
By Amy H. Carter
Editor
Russ Moon measured more than an inch of rainfall on his farm by 10 o'clock on the Tuesday morning after Thanksgiving, and that was just enough to give him hope in the midst of a dismal season.
"With the drought and low commodity prices, there's not a whole lot of optimism" going into the new year, Moon said.
Moon Farms near Athens has seen very little rain since the two-and-a-half inches that fell the first week of August. That little bit of precipitation gave Moon an extra cutting of hay for his cattle, but he still reported 50 percent lower yields on the soybean crop he planted in June. Worse still, the August rain event was confined to the southern portion of Madison County, so his neighbors to the north have gone without rain far longer.
"Very little hay has been gotten up (for the cows)," he said. "As far as row cropping, it's basically just stopped all the planting this fall. We've gotten very little planted. This rain is
definitely a blessing. I expect a lot of farmers to jump out there after this rain and start planting."
In drought-stricken areas of Georgia, the rainfall deficit ranges between 9 and 12 inches. While recent and forecasted rains probably won't be enough to cure that, every little bit helps the state's farmers, especially when it falls lightly.
"With a low-intensity rain, the soil has a good potential to absorb the rainfall, like a sponge. This causes the water to infiltrate deep into the soil profile. This deep infiltration will allow the freshly planted seed to germinate and have some water in the soil profile to grow," explained Gary L. Hawkins, water resource management specialist for the University of Georgia's Agricultural Extension Service in Watkinsville.
A low-intensity rain, or heavy mist, will also help cool season fruit and vegetable growers by making the soil easier to work. A heavy, or high-intensity rain, can help farmers who rely on surface irrigation by filling ponds or reservoirs, Hawkins said, but it won't soak into the soil and provide extended support for plant growth.
The arrival of winter and a shift in weather patterns brings
the hope of more rain to the Southeast, said Pam Knox, agricultural climatologist with the UGA Extension Service in Watkinsville. However, it likely won't be enough to reverse the drought.
"We are currently in a La Nia pattern, which means that warmer and drier conditions are more likely to occur than average over the next few months. That does not mean we will get no rain, but whatever we get is not going to be excessive," Knox said.
Where to find hay
Lingering drought conditions are forcing Georgia's livestock producers to feed more hay than usual. The Market Bulletin maintains a regular listing of hay dealers in the "Feed, Hay & Grain" section of our classified ads. Find more hay online through the Georgia Farm Bureau's hay directory at http://www.gfb.org/commodities/hay.html.
Georgia Citrus Association forms to promote the growth of citrus crops in Georgia
Over the past few years, Georgia farmers, gardeners, agricultural investors and homeowners have experienced a keen uptick of interest in the citrus industry. The number of growers has exponentially increased in a very short period of time. What began three years ago in the Lowndes County UGA extension office as a meeting to explore the possibilities of growing satsumas has now begun to take shape as a collective body of producers, vendors and researchers intending to develop and promote citrus as a competitive and economical-
ly sustainable agricultural commodity in the Southeast.
On Oct. 5 the group established the Georgia Citrus Association, a non-profit organization whose purpose is to promote the citrus industry through education, research, quality control and marketing. Upon formation, the association adopted by-laws, selected a board of directors, elected
officers and began accepting membership applications.
Membership is open to anyone related to the citrus industry in Georgia, North Florida and South Alabama. To join, email GeorgiaCitrusAssociation@gmail.com.

UGA announces 2017 Flavor of Georgia Food Product Contest Apply before Jan. 15 to receive a discount on registration fees
By Merritt Melancon
Whether it's a specialty sweet treat, small-batch pork sausage or pimento cheese made from Grandma's secret recipe, the University of Georgia's Flavor of Georgia Food Product Contest shines the spotlight on the state's craft food scene. The contest, in its second decade, serves as a springboard for food entrepreneurs, assisting them in testing new products and reaching a larger audience, and helps new craft brands break into new markets and expand sales.
Registration for the 2017 Flavor of Georgia contest, which is conducted each year by the UGA Center for Agribusiness and Economic Development, is now open at http://flavorofga.com/.
Over the years more than 1,100 food products have been entered in the contest. Today many of those products are sold in national and regional supermarkets. Others have increased their wholesale distribution or internet sales, or experienced better traffic at local farmers markets.
"Flavor of Georgia participants tell us that the contest provides recognition, credibility and exposure for their products," said Sharon P. Kane, a UGA food business development specialist and the contest's coordinator.
"We've made many great food industry contacts by participating, and the contest is a great conversation starter when
we're promoting our product," said Amanda Wilbanks, owner of Gainesville's Southern Baked Pie Company, grand prize winner of the 2016 Flavor of Georgia Contest.
Product categories for the 2017 contest include barbecue sauces, beverages, condiments and salsas, confections, dairy products, dairy-alternative products, honey, jams and jellies, meats and seafood, meat-alternative products, sauces and seasonings, snack foods and miscellaneous products. Judges evaluate each product based on flavor, texture and market innovation. Consumer appeal and product representation of Georgia are also considered. Registration closes Feb. 9, 2017, but contestants can enter at an early discounted rate before Jan. 15, 2017. Contest finalists will participate in the final round of judging and a public tasting March 21, 2017, as part of the Governor's statewide Agricultural Awareness Week. For more information or to register, visit http://flavorofga.com or call 706.583.0347. -Merritt Melancon is a news editor with the University of Georgia

FARMERS AND CONSUMERS MARKET BULLETIN 404-656-3722 agr.georgia.gov
WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 7, 2016
From our archives:
Before Trump and Twitter, there was Talmadge and the Market Bulletin
By Amy H. Carter
Editor
The "Georgia Market Bulletin" was to former Gov. Eugene Talmadge what Twitter is to President-elect Donald J. Trump. Talmadge began his career as a state politico in 1926 when he was elected to the first of three terms as agriculture commissioner. Not long after he assumed office, Talmadge jumped onto the Market Bulletin like it was his own personal stump, speaking homilies to the "pore farmers" of the state and "knocking the bark off of some strong and powerful interests" he perceived to be working against his fellow "dirt farmers."
By 1931 the Georgia Legislature had read enough and "muzzled" Talmadge (his word) by attaching a rider to an appropriations bill prohibiting anything other than advertisements for farm products from being published in the paper. Talmadge railed against this new law on the front page of the Dec. 24, 1931, issue under the headline "When the Wicked Rule, The Righteous Will Mourn."
On Dec. 31 he formally ceded his spot on the stump, writing that "if any other matter appeared in the Market Bulletin except advertisements of products for sale and wanted, that
the Governor should not honor a warrant for the publication of the Bulletin." This final editorial was titled "The Last of the Mohicans," and it marked the end of the most colorful period in the Market Bulletin's history.
Talmadge was elected to his first term as governor in 1932. His successor at the Georgia Department of Agriculture, G.C. Adams, kicked off his only term as commissioner with a Christmas message printed on the front page of the paper's Jan. 5, 1933, issue.. If the legislature repealed its ban on such writings before Adams took office, the Market Bulletin made no note of it. Subsequent commissioners delivered news of import to their constituents via the Market Bulletin, but none matched Talmadge's talent for a stirring soliloquy.
For example, on Jan. 12, 1928, he offered farmers this
advice: "Don't try to plant more than you can cultivate well, fertilize well, and gather when it needs it. Don't go too much into debt, as this is a Presidential Election Year." And in January 1929, after said election year had passed, he wrote: "Thank God that is over."
The Talmadge editorial reprinted here is just as timely as that sentiment, as it addresses the sale of dogs through the Market Bulletin. We recently reinstated the "Stock Dog" category of ads due to an uptick of interest among buyers and sellers. We encourage you to look there if you're in need of a good guard or herding dog on your farm.
We're just six issues away from marking the 100th anniversary of the "Farmers and Consumers Market Bulletin." If you have memories or thoughts to share, we'd love to hear from you.

Dogs
A few years ago advertisements for the sale and exchange of dogs were carried in the Market Bulletin. The Federal Postal authorities ruled however that this class of advertisements could not be carried in the Market Bulletin which was published at the expense of the State and received a special rate on its mailing distribution.
When dogs were cut out of the Bulletin a howl went up almost as penetrating as old Sank baying at the moon.
I sympathized with all the real dog lovers who were grieving because they could not find a ready market in which to buy and sell a dog.
We finally have fallen upon this plan in the Bureau of Markets. If you have a really GOOD dog that you wish to sell, send in a description of it, and the price to the Bureau of Markets. If you want to buy a GOOD dog, send in your wants to the Bureau of Markets and we will try to get buyer and seller together by correspondence. We cannot carry these ads in the Bulletin on account of the ruling of the Postal authorities.
I never could like a man much who did not like either dogs or horses. I believe that association with dogs and horses really improves us anyway.
The hunting season will open soon. Try hunting some day, you old fogies who have not been hunting since you had on knee trousers. Take your boys along with you, and see if you do not learn to know them better by playing with them. They will also understand you better if you will take off some of that frozen dignity and play with them a little. Dogs and horses help at this.
I am pretty well fixed for the
hunting season myself. I have a good 'possum dog that bagged me three 'possums in Cobb County last night. I have a good bird dog at home that my wife recently cured of the black tongue. My wife also has a German police dog that had the black tongue at the same time my little setter did. She cured them both. Nursing is the greatest thing in doctoring a dog, just like it is in doctoring people.
You notice the word good is in capitals above?
A sorry dog ought to have his tail cut off right behind his ears.

Arty's Garden: The joys of seeking and finding uncommon plants for the garden
By Arty Schronce
It can be discouraging to read about an interesting flower, vegetable, shrub or tree, and then not be able to find it for sale from any familiar source. I know. Believe me, I know. Some of my searches went on for years, and some are ongoing. I have experienced the joy of locating a source only to find it sold out until next year. Sometimes a prized plant is out of my price range. Oh well.
When you get frustrated in your plant searches, here are a few points to consider:
Without education, no one may ever know about let alone purchase a worthy but uncommon plant, so don't be angry at the people who tell us about horticultural treasures. They do not do so in order to frustrate us. They are trying to broaden our palette and increase our choices. How boring it would be if all our gardens contained the same plants.
Realize that every plant is not profitable for a nursery or garden center to produce or to carry as part of its stock. Most growers/sellers make their decisions based on the
profitability of each plant or based on what can be sold to the largest number of people. Some uncommon plants may not have a broad appeal or may be difficult to reproduce or maintain. They may also be difficult for the average gardener to grow, and the seller may not want to deal with complaints or hundreds of questions.
There are many specialty nurseries that do not cater to the general public but that produce plants for people the garden connoisseurs, if you will who are looking for something different. Familiarize yourself with these sellers. They are your best bets when you read or hear about a plant that is rare or unusual. Subscribing to a garden magazine like "Horticulture" is a way to learn of some of these specialty nurseries. The internet can be helpful in connecting gardeners with these nurseries, too. The Georgia Agriculture Department's "Farmers and Consumers Market Bulletin" has an advertisement category of "Flowers and Ornamentals Wanted," as well as advertisements from Georgians offering seeds and plants for sale. Become a member of a public garden or a horticultural group that interests you. These
may have sales or seed exchanges where you find rare and unusual plants long before they enter the nursery trade.
Start things from seed; it may be the only way you can get a longed-for plant. Seeds are not as mysterious and terrifying as you may think. And I can't tell you all the wonderful large plants I have that began as rooted cuttings or liners. Think small!
After the search, we may find much greater joy when we finally receive that long sought-after plant than we would have if it had fallen into our lap. And one more thing: It's worth remembering that seeking can be an adventure that leads us to new friends. At a flower show many years ago, a gardener was bragging about all the good things she had found in the Market Bulletin.
"Oh, we have gotten so many plants," she told me, "but it's the people we've met who make it worthwhile."
