GEORGIA DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE GARY W. BLACK, COMMISSIONER WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 28, 2016 VOL. 99, NO. 20 COPYRIGHT 2016

Department of Agriculture, UGA host farm tour of Georgia Sept. 7

Far from being intimidated by the august stature of the delegation visiting Lane Southern Orchards in Fort Valley on Sept. 7, Mark Sanchez welcomed the opportunity to talk agribusiness with state leaders on Georgia's fourth annual farm tour.
The tour is led annually by Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Gary W. Black. University of Georgia President Jere W. Morehead and Sam Pardue, dean of UGA's College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, joined Black in hosting the familiarization tour of farms and agribusinesses in Middle and South Georgia for: Georgia Sen. John Wilkinson, (R-Toccoa), chair of the Senate Agriculture Committee; Rep. Terry England, (R-Auburn), chair of the State House Appropriations Committee; and Rep. Tom McCall, (R-Elberton), chair of the State House Agriculture Committee.
Lane Southern Orchards in Fort Valley was the group's first stop. The family farm has been growing and harvesting peaches and pecans since 1908. Lane Orchards has more

than 3,000 acres each of peach orchards and pecan groves. Lane also grows strawberries, blackberries, blueberries, apples, scuppernongs, muscadines and kiwi.

Sanchez, chief executive officer of Lane Southern Orchards, told the delegation that "the future is very bright" for Georgia agriculture.

"The nation's need for food will continue to grow and Georgia is poised to be a big part of the food supply," he said. "We have land, great climate and most importantly, water available to thrive in the future."
As a grower and packer of several of Georgia's signature crops, Sanchez applauded the marketing efforts of the Georgia Department of Agriculture and the research work done by UGA.
"Georgia agriculture is fortunate to have such great leadership and support from the commissioner and the university," he said. "We know they work hard every day on our behalf and it is always a privilege to spend some time with them discussing the issues facing our industry. It was an honor to be able to be a part of this tour and to speak with the group about issues facing all Georgia growers."
The farm tour is organized annually for just that reason, Black said.
"We are excited to continue our spirit of

Black said the initiative is the talk of many public events he attends.
"Very rarely is there a place in the public arena where we are not talking about this," he said. "Folks are excited."
Georgia Schools Superintendent Richard Woods said the education department's goal is to put Georgia Grown on not only the plates of students but on their desks as well.
"My vision is looking at how we make nutrition an actionable part of what we do," Woods said. "We talk about business. We talk about finances. We talk about math and science. We need to introduce nutrition into what we do in our classrooms. This expands the opportunities for what our children learn."
The agriculture department's Feed My School program is already promoting the discussion of farming and nutrition in the class-

Arty's Garden:
Obedient Plant I have you under my power
(or do you have me under yours?)
By Arty Schronce
Obedient plant (Physostegia virginiana) gets its common name because you can move the individual flowers from side to side and they will remain where they have been moved. It is an excellent cut flower with sturdy stems and a long vase life. Those traits, along with its model behavior, have made it a favorite of amateur flower arrangers over the years and probably a few photographers as well, since the flowers can be swiveled for the best angle.
Children also enjoy manipulating the flowers. Teaching a dog to sit may be harder, but it is a run-of-the-mill trick compared to having a flower do your bidding. Ah, the power!
Another common name for the plant is false dragonhead. I don't like calling any plant "false" though; it makes it sound like the plant is a liar! Every plant deserves a name of its own, not one based on another plant. It's like calling Georgia "The Empire State of the South." Whose bright idea was that? Obedient plant is a native wildflower but has been incorporated into gardens for hundreds of years. In fact, you are probably more likely to encounter it in gardens than in the wild. There are several varieties of obedient plant on the market that vary in flower color (pure white to pinks and purples), growth habit (height and spread), and time of bloom. There is at least one with variegated leaves. Some varieties will bloom in summer, but most bloom in the fall. Obedient plant prefers moist soil but is tolerant many soil conditions, and is easy to grow. Some are rapid spreaders, especially when soil is moist and fertile, but they are easy to control. Obedient plant is a good companion for goldenrod, blue mist flower, garden phlox, monarda, great blue lobelia, cut-leaf coneflower, native asters, swamp milkweed and anise-scented salvia. Obedient plant rarely makes anyone's top ten list. I don't know of a Physostegia society or a group of obedient plant fanciers, but it has cast a small spell over me, touching me so that I always leave room for it in my little garden. Who is obeying whom?

Commissioner Gary W. Black and

Georgia Grown receive tourism awards

Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Gary W. Black was honored with The Bill Hardman Sr. Tourism Champion in Government award at the 2016 Georgia Governor's Tourism Conference in Savannah Sept. 14. Black was recognized for his dedication to tourism with an emphasis on agriculture.
In addition, members of the Georgia Grown team were recognized for their commitment to agritourism by receiving The Bill Hardman Sr. Tourism Champion Partnership Award. The Georgia Grown Trail 41 Association received The Bill Hardman Sr. Tourism Champion Product Development award for the promotion and preservation of a 12-county corridor along U.S. Highway 41.
"I am extremely proud of the Georgia Grown team for recognizing the potential of what is still an emerging market," Black said. "Agritourism is not only an opportunity for consumers to learn and take part in the agricultural experience, but also a great window of opportunity for our farmers to grow their businesses, which in turn can further enhance

our economy." Agriculture is Georgia's largest industry,
contributing more than 411,500 jobs and $72 billion to the economy. Tourism is the state's second largest industry, contributing a record $58.9 billion to the economy last year.
"On behalf of the Georgia Grown team, I would like to thank Governor Deal for recognizing the incredible impact Georgia Grown has had throughout the state," said Matthew Kulinski, Georgia Grown program manager. "We are so proud of our members and their dedication to quality agritourism destinations."
Enhancing Georgia's agritourism locations has been one of Black's top initiatives since taking office in 2010. Agritourism interest continues to grow in collaboration with the public's interest in knowing where their food comes from. The University of Georgia estimates the economic impact for agritourism at $142 million.

Vision: Farmers go to school

room. Schools are enrolled in the program for three years, during which time the department helps them build farm-to-cafeteria alliances.
Allen McCannon, superintendent of Madison County Schools, said a pep rally attended by area farmers kicks off local Feed My School for a Week celebrations in his school system. McCannon said the events include a discussion of agricultural careers represented by the visitors. Madison County is a leading agricultural producer in the state, but many children in the community learn about farm-

ing for the first time at school. "Just because you live in an agricultural
community does not mean you know about agriculture," McCannon said. "I think we're starting to change our kids' minds about agriculture."
The tentative timeline for meeting the 2020 Vision goal is to have 50 percent of Georgia schools on board by the start of the 2018 school year; 75 percent by the start of the 2019 school year; and 100 percent in 2020.

cooperation and education with the university through the coordination of our annual farm tour. President Morehead has been extremely responsive with his deep commitment to the agriculture industry, and these tours have been a great opportunity to open the communication channel between our farming community and those who support it," Black said.
According to the UGA Center for Agribusiness and Economic Development, Georgia's total agricultural production reached $14 billion in 2014, the most recent year for which data is available, up $398 million from 2013. Agriculture contributes more than $74 billion annually to Georgia's economy, making it the state's No. 1 industry.
"From the technical assistance offered through extension agents to research advancements that improve agricultural practices, the University of Georgia works in numerous ways to assist farmers and industry leaders throughout the state," Morehead said. "The farm tour provides a valuable opportunity to identify potential challenges facing the agriculture industry and ways UGA faculty and staff can help to address them."
After visiting Lane, the group traveled to the Super-Sod/Patten Seed Company's Middle Georgia farm, also in Fort Valley. Super-Sod/Patten Seed is the largest producer of University of Georgia licensed turf grass in the country. The company generates about $400,000 in royalties for UGA annually, and farms approximately 13,000 acres of turf across Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina. The fields at Middle Georgia Super-

Sod account for about 3,500 acres of the company's production.
From there the group traveled to the Georgia Seed Development Commission in Plains, where various various seed types relating to high-value crops such as peanuts, soybeans, blueberries, muscadine grapes, rye, wheat and forages are reproduced and marketed.
The tour concluded in Albany. While there, the group visited Plantation Seed Conditioners and AgSouth Genetics, which source germplasm through land grant universities to grow and package seed for sale to farmers. The tour concluded at Georgia Federal-State Inspection Service, which performs voluntary and compulsory quality inspections on more than 35 commodities grown in Georgia. Georgia Federal-State inspectors also verify the quality of imports such as onions, peanuts and melons.
"One of the things that has impressed me since coming to Georgia is the deep appreciation people have for the art and science of agriculture. To see that appreciation extend to the president's office at the University of Georgia is significant," said Pardue, who left a post at North Carolina State University to assume leadership of UGA's college of agriculture in March.
Georgia's top five agricultural commodities are broilers, beef, cotton, eggs and timber. Georgia also leads the nation in peanut and blueberry production. One in seven Georgia residents works in forestry, agriculture or related fields. In 2012, there were 42,257 farms in Georgia, representing 9,620,836 acres of land; the average size was 228 acres.

39th Annual Sunbelt Ag Expo:
The latest and greatest in farm equipment, technology will be on display

Farmers seeking a one-stop opportunity to kick the tires on the latest and greatest farm equipment have kept the Sunbelt Agricultural Expo in Moultrie relevant for 39 years. Kelley Manufacturing Co. in Tifton has never missed the opportunity to put its equipment in front of the more than 80,000 visitors who attend the show annually.
"The expo allows us to spotlight several of our products both current and new," said Kelly Peele, advertising manager for the company. "It helps generate exposure that in turn can lead to more sales volume. Through the expo we are allowed to have positive networking with our customers, which in turn is beneficial on all fronts."
Kelley Manufacturing is one of more than 1,200 vendors and exhibitors that will be present for the 39th annual Sunbelt Ag Expo at Spence Field in Moultrie Oct. 18-20. The show includes static exhibits, a working farm, equipment demos, driving ranges and educational opportunities for farmers, ranchers and consumers.
Sunbelt remains one of the largest farm exhibition shows in America because it has stayed true to its roots, said Executive Director Chip Blalock.
"We strive to provide an environment for our exhibitors to show their products and technology. As a result of the conversations that go on with farmers and ranchers and consumers who come to the show, they sell their products and technology," Blalock said. "They love the good food and people when they come, but the fact that they sell their products every year is what keeps them coming back."
Kelley Manufacturing is marking its 50th anniversary in business this year. The company was established in 1966 by C.D. Kelley in Columbus. In 1967, the company's first implement was released a 2-row peanut digger shaker inverter.
"This was instrumental in leading to what is now considered one of the most successful

lines of peanut harvesting equipment on the market," Peele said.
In the years since, the company has expanded its lines to include tillage and poultry equipment.
Heavy equipment is an obvious draw at Sunbelt, where many vendors offer show-goers the opportunity to test drive new models and see the latest harvesters at work on the expo's 600-acre research farm. But Sunbelt is also the place to see the future of farming.
"We showed the first computers at Sunbelt in 1983," Blalock said.
Since then, every great technological advance in farming has been introduced to Southern farmers at Sunbelt. The exposition itself is hi-tech with a downloadable app for smart phones that puts the complete show schedule and a map of the 1.6 million square feet of exhibit space at Spence Field in the

palm of the hand. "The beauty of the mobile app is that it
can be updated right up until show time," Blalock said. "Go to your app store, whether Apple or Android, and search for Sunbelt Expo 2016. We have a calendar with an hour-by-hour schedule for all three days of the show. You can set reminders when you want to see something in particular. We also have a map to help you navigate the 93-acre exhibit area and 600 acres of field demos."
All the wonders of virtual reality aside, exhibitors like Hays-LTI in Camilla still welcome the chance to meet current and potential customers face-to-face.
"Attendees of the Sunbelt Expo come to seek out new products, new ideas and to see the latest advances made in the ag industry," said Laura Pinson, sales and marketing director for Hays-LTI. The family-owned com-

pany manufactures dry and liquid fertilizer equipment, and is preparing to move into a new state-of-the-art manufacturing facility.
Known for their Hays Tenders, Hays Side-Dump Bulk Haulers and Hays Transport Tankers, the company will be showcasing new products at Sunbelt: the Hays Three Compartment Tender and the Hays 8-Ton Tender, along with its line of Poly Tanks.
"We enjoy that customers get to touch, crawl up under and see our equipment firsthand. We love displaying our equipment and showcasing new products that we have on the market," Pinson said. "The Sunbelt Expo allows us to visit and reconnect with our customers and also attract and meet potential customers who could benefit from the equipment that we manufacture."
Did you know?
According to an economic impact study performed by the University of Georgia, the Sunbelt Ag Expo generates $20 million for Moultrie and the 20 counties surrounding it during show week each October. Other meetings and events hosted at the expo grounds throughout the year generate another $20 million for the region.
Learn more about the Sunbelt Ag Expo and purchase tickets online at SunbeltExpo. com. Tickets may also be purchased at the gate (cash only) all three days of the expo, Oct. 18-20.

Wes Shannon talks peanuts on the big screen at the Georgia National Fair

Like most farmers, Wes Shannon cultivates more

than just one crop. But he has just one favorite: pea-

nuts. Be they ever so humble, peanuts pack a power-

ful nutritional punch, and that's what prompts Shan-

non to lead with his peanut farmer label before any

other.

"I've been growing peanuts as long as I've been

farming and have always been proud to be known

as a peanut farmer," he said. "Even though we grow

other crops ... there's always been a pleasure in be-

ing a peanut farmer and growing a crop that's so

wholesome and nutritious, something that can feed

not only folks in this country but around the world.

That's kind of what farming's all about. It's about

making a difference."

Shannon will help the Georgia Department of

Agriculture tell the story of Georgia peanuts in a

film set to air at the Georgia National Fair in Perry Southwest Georgia Peanut Farmer Wes Shannon

crops in a pair of movies that will be screened in rotation in commodities. Georgia leads the nation in peanut production,

been growing peanuts for a long, long time."

Peanuts consistently rank No. 1 among Georgia's top farm Shannon believes so strongly in the crop that he's served

on both state and national boards to set policy affecting the peanut industry in Georgia. Seeing those policies and ideas continue to bear fruit is satisfying, he said. New products, new uses and new interest in peanuts from different sectors of society create an even greater demand for one of Georgia's signature crops.
Shannon is particularly interested in the value of peanuts as a food for malnourished children in poor countries. Powdered peanut butter and similar products are produced for use in underdeveloped countries. The protein and nutrients in peanuts help children in those countries achieve good health quickly, Shannon said. That alone makes the challenging work of farming worthwhile for him.
"The economic stress is probably one of the largest ones I can think of over my whole career, and it's always there," he said "We basically risk everything our family has every year to make a crop, and hope and pray that enough income comes back in to pay those bank loans off and to meet all our needs and obligations and start again." Every year that it works is cause to give thanks. "I truly believe this is what God has called me to do; to feed other people, and to grow food and fiber for this country."
