GEORGIA DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE GARY W. BLACK, COMMISSIONER WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 6, 2016 VOL. 99, NO. 1 COPYRIGHT 2016
"2020 Vision" for healthier school meals will bring fresh opportunities to Georgia farmers
By the year 2020, 20 percent of every meal served in every public school in Georgia every day of the school year will consist of fresh local foods.
That is the goal of the "2020 Vision for School Nutrition" drafted during a December 2015 meeting between the Georgia Departments of Agriculture and Education. The two organizations aim to revolutionize school meals by bringing more nutritious, locally grown food into the mix.
"The notion of buying local and understanding the face behind the food you eat has grown more and more important to families in Georgia," said Agriculture Commissioner Gary Black. "That's why our Georgia Grown branding program has been so successful already and is really just getting started."
The 2020 Vision is a part of the Department of Agriculture's Georgia Grown program, which encompasses the Feed My School for a Week initiative, currently in its fifth year. The program introduces agriculture into the curriculum, pairing schools with farmers and cultivating a deeper understanding by young Georgians of the origins
of food and the ways it gets from farm to plate.
"We have a chance now to help our students understand the importance of eating local," Black said. "From this, we will im-
prove upon school nutrition and have our impact on the cafeteria."
In addition to challenging every public school in the state to ensure that 20 percent of each meal is produced locally, the plan
Professionals from various fields of expertise met with Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Gary Black at the Georgia FFA-FCCLA Center in Covington Dec. 11 to launch a fresh plan for serving healthier school meals.
also challenges 20 percent of schools to up their locally grown content to 50 percent. To be successful, the plan will require the support of students, parents, farmers, suppliers, school nutritionists, and state and community leaders.
"Each and every part of the community is equally important to the success of our students," said Georgia Schools Superintendent Richard Woods. "Our students must have proper, nutritious meals in order to learn, and that's why I'm excited to help make the `2020 Vision for School Nutrition' a reality. We have a great opportunity to create a movement in Georgia for more local and highly nutritious foods in our school cafeterias."
Dr. Kathy Peavey, assistant director of school nutrition for the state Department of Education, said the plan has the potential to greatly benefit students and farmers and, thus, the state as a whole.
"We are excited to see what opportunities we will make for our farmers and businesses in Georgia, but, most importantly, for our students," she said.

Georgia FFA Association produces two National Officers in as many years:
Abbey Gretsch follows Andy Paul on a whirlwind world tour advocating for agriculture
Abbey Gretsch is just days into a year-long journey of more than 100,000 miles that will take her from her home in Lexington, Ga., clear across the world to Japan and many places in between. On Oct. 31, Gretsch became the fourth Georgia FFA Association member in five years to win election as an officer of the National FFA Organization.
Andy Paul, also from Lexington, concluded his own historic term as national president of FFA on Oct. 31. Paul is just the third Georgian to have served in that post since 1959.
"I spent, I think, more than 100,00 miles this year traveling to 29 different states and two countries," Paul said. "I traveled 300 days out of the past year."
Andy Paul
Abbey Gretsch
Gretsch will experience a similar journey as Southern Region Vice President of National FFA. In addition to Japan, her travels will take her to FFA Associations in Puerto Rico and the
Virgin Islands. National officers interact on behalf of the organization with business and industry sponsors, government and education officials, state FFA leaders and the general public. They lead personal growth and leadership training conferences for FFA members throughout the country and help set policies that guide the future of FFA and promote agricultural literacy.
Gretsch will take a year off from her studies in the University of Georgia's College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences to fulfill her term. She is working on a dual major in ag communications and ag education.

Georgia is the No. 1 producer of poultry in the country, a distinction earned primarily for the state's thriving broiler chicken industry, but Quail International is making a big name for the state with little birds.
Quail International has been producing quail products out of Greensboro since 1983. The company's Plantation Quail product was established to bring a new flavor to Georgia's food industry.
"Thirty-two years ago they converted the chicken farm into what is today Quail International," said Arnold Cardarelli, marketing manager. "We consider ourselves the quail specialist."
The company operates its own
laying houses, hatchery and processing plant, which was inherited from the chicken farm before its transition. The company keeps veterinarians on-site to provide regular health checks and handson assistance when needed.
"Quail International is probably the only quail company that is focusing on trying to provide something different to the American consumer by providing a healthy meat," said Cardarelli. "It is a meat that is very versatile."
The company's website provides a number of recipe suggestions and cooking tips. (Their recipe for Fried Plantation Quail with
Cornmeal Crust and Fried Egg Salad is on Page 7.)
With its Plantation Quail brand, the company offers quail many ways, including whole, split, boneless and even bacon-wrapped. The
brand can be found at specialty food retailers and some Kroger stores.
Since its founding, Quail International has made a big impact in its home base of Green County.
"We have become the largest employer in Green County. We've generated, directly, close to 140 jobs, plus indirect employment," said Cardarelli. "One of the biggest contributions is all the re-
search that we do." The company works with the
University of Georgia and conducts genetic research aimed at providing the best product for consumers.
Cardarelli said Quail International is proud to be a part of the Georgia Grown program because of the quality standards set for products that advertise with the logo.
"More and more it's more recognizable," he said. "The Georgia Grown program has gotten into the minds of certain customers that believe that if a product carries the Georgia Grown seal, it's a good product."

Georgia Agribusiness Council marks 50 years for agriculture
Since 1966, the Georgia Agribusiness Council has served as a forum for the entire agricultural industry to share views, develop understanding and work on issues of common concern.
The council will kick off the celebration of its 50th year of leading the state's strongest industry with its Membership Supper & Annual Meeting and State Legislative Breakfast in February.

UGA Extension Service offers four-week Master Goat Farmer Training Certification course
Five years ago Fernando Mendez decided to try his hand at raising goats. The proprietor of a 900-acre spread in Arabi named Marview Farms, Mendez raises grassfed livestock cattle, goats, sheep and hogs for meat.
"Goats are challenging," said Mendez, a Cuban migr who came to America at age six with his family and retired at 47 to a life of organic farming.
He's learned that goats are smart but
mischievous. "I have a field planted in oats and rye and
(this morning ) they were in there. They've got plenty of places to be in but they decided to go where they're not supposed to go," Mendez said.
Fortunately, they're easily corrected. "They know when they're doing wrong," he said, so it's not too hard to get them back on the right path. Establishing a herd takes commitment and hard work, however. They have to be acclimated to feed and soils, checked and bred for resistance to parasites like the barber pole worm that causes anemia in sheep and goats, and culled for ease of care. While the work is ongoing, Mendez has a herd of about 250 now, and a solid market for his product. "Everything that I produce is sold," he said. "There's no problem of moving goats." According to the University of Georgia's College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, the demand for goat meat is high. Growing Chicano and Latino populations in the Southeast and in Texas have brought with them a historical preference for goat meat, also known as chevon. And this cultural
preference has turned into big business for those producers who can meet this steadily increasing demand for goat products.
The demand from consumers has led to rising interest among potential producers, said Brenda Jackson, agriculture and natural resources agent in UGA's Whitfield County Extension Office.
"I have had an increase in requests for info on raising goats and so have several other county agents in the area that I've spoken to," Jackson said.
As a result, Jackson is hosting a series of four Master Goat Farmer Certification Training classes in Dalton to address a number of topics related to managing and producing meat goats. The series will cover nutrition, goat selection, foot trimming, reproduction and kidding, health and diseases, FAMACHA training, business and marketing.
"We want this class to provide new producers the best possible chance for success in starting out as well as provide experienced producers some new ideas they may not have tried yet," Jackson said.
Classes will be held from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Jan. 28, Feb. 4, Feb. 11 and Feb. 18 at the
North Georgia Agriculture Fair in Dalton. Meals, refreshments, study materials, manuals, door prizes and graduation certificates are included in the $100 cost of the series.
Registration is limited to the first 75, and must be completed by Jan. 21. Contact the Whitfield County Extension Office at 706.278.8207.

Arty's Garden: The stark winter beauty of bark and branches
By Arty Schronce
Bark and branches are with us all year, but winter is when we notice them most. That is when they become stars in the garden rather than supporting players. Without the cloak of leaves, we can more readily see their color and texture in the soft sunlight of winter. We can now see the underlying structure of deciduous trees and shrubs where we once saw only foliage.
While each tree or shrub has its own particular points of winter interest, here are a few whose bark or branching patterns are especially worth noting:
Flowering dogwood is probably the most beautiful and useful flowering tree in America. It provides flowers in the spring, scarlet berries from late summer into winter (beautiful and relished by wildlife) and crimson foliage in autumn. It has an exquisite, tiered branching pattern that is most prominent when it blooms or in winter when it is loaded with fat, gray buds. And its bark is an attractive gray broken into distinctive blocks. Plant one.
Crape myrtles offer showy flowers in summer and colorful foliage in the fall. All year long its bark ranges from silky, grayish beige to smooth, cinnamon brown.
Cornelian cherry (Cornus mas) is not actually a cherry but a species of dogwood. It is noted for its small yellow flowers that can turn it into a mist of yellow in early spring. Its bark is gray to brown and exfoliates with age. It is an underused large shrub or small tree possessing subtle charms.
The bark of the paperbark maple (Acer griseum) is as warm and shiny as caramel candy. It is a reddish brown and peels in papery layers.
The coral bark Japanese maple (Acer palmatum `Sangokaku') is becoming more widely known due to the brilliant coral bark on its young branches. The color intensifies in winter.
Ironwood (Carpinus caroliniana), also known as American hornbeam, has slate gray bark. Its trunk and larger branches can have an interesting sinewy appearance that accounts for another common name, musclewood. It is a Georgia native that deserves to be more widely planted.
The trunk of American yellowwood (Cladrastis kentuckea) can look like a column of molded concrete. The trunk of American beech (Fagus grandifolia) is also gray, but smoother. Unfortunately, it has tempted pocketknife-wielding boys to carve their and their sweetheart's initials. Plant a beech but keep the knives away. Unscarred bark is beautiful; tree graffiti is not.
Readers of this column already know how much I appreciate the gleaming white branches on the sycamore trees that grace our landscape.
While the branching patterns of many trees can become as fine in relation to the trunk as our capillaries are to our major arteries, the coarse-textured branches of an old fig tree have a sculptural beauty like that of the fingers of Albrecht Drer's "Praying Hands."
With its wildly contorted branches, Harry Lauder's walking stick (Coryus avellana `Contorta') appeals to many but mystifies others. It is always an interesting garden subject, however.
This is just a sampling of the many trees and shrubs to delight us in winter. There are many more. And don't forget the lichens of gray and celadon that adorn tree trunks and branches like frilled medallions. They are more noticeable in winter, especially after a rain. They do not harm the tree. Enjoy their many variations.
Coral bark maple is becoming more widely planted due to its colorful winter branches.
A paperbark maple glows in the winter sun at the State Botanical Garden of Georgia in Athens.
A coating of snow (February 2010) accentuates the sculptural aspects of a fig tree.

The color of a crape myrtle's bark is appealing as is its texture. It is hard to pass one without touching its silky smoothness.
Lichens may be more noticeable in winter, and more colorful after a rain. They do not harm the tree.
Home Cooking:
Fried Plantation Quail with Cornmeal Crust and Fried Egg Salad
(Recipe from Quail International; www.plantationquail.net)
Ingredients for the quail: cup all-propose flour cup cornmeal Salt and pepper Cayenne pepper 1 large egg cup buttermilk 4 boneless quail, legs and breast separated, rinsed and
patted dry Peanut oil for frying
Ingredients for the salad: 4 slices of pancetta or bacon medium chopped 8 quail eggs, cracked and ready for frying (sunny side up) 2 cups of mixed watercress, endive and radicchio Salt and pepper to taste 3 Tbsps. red wine vinaigrette
Preparation of the Quail: In a small bowl, combine flour and cornmeal and salt and pepper. Mix together and add cayenne and set aside.
In another medium bowl add egg and buttermilk and season with salt and pepper. Place quail pieces in buttermilk mixture and let sit for about 20 minutes.
In a saut pan on medium heat cook pancetta until crisp and transfer onto paper towel and let drain. Save the fat and set aside.
Heat 1 inch of peanut oil in a deep medium skillet over medium/high heat until it reaches a temperature of 350 degrees F. Remove quail from buttermilk and dredge in flour mix shaking off the excess. Carefully place the quail into the oil and fry, turning once until golden, about 3 minutes. With a slotted spoon, place on paper towels to drain.
Ingredients for the red wine vinaigrette: 1 tsp. minced shallot 1 tsp. minced fresh thyme Salt and pepper to taste 2 Tbsps. red wine vinegar 4 Tbsps. virgin olive oil
In a medium bowl toss greens with some of the vinaigrette and season with salt and pepper.
Divide plates with tossed greens, arrange quail on each plate and place two fried eggs on each plate. Drizzle with vinaigrette and crispy pancetta.

but I love the communications aspect of it and just being a communications expert for an ag company," she said. "I like talking to people. I like talking to farmers. I would like to find a job that fits some of the qualities I enjoy and enjoy doing, but I'm not 100 percent sold on anything quite yet."
Gretsch is a first-generation FFA member who joined in the 6th grade.
"I did grow up on a farm, a big poultry operation. We had 10 houses and I had worked in those since the age of 2," she said. "My senior year in high school my parents sold those. We have 300 to 400 head of Angus cattle, and that's what my family solely operates off of."
Former President Paul, on the other hand, has no direct farming experience. He raised and showed pigs in high
school, following his father into the membership of FFA. Having concluded his presidency and returned home to his "one-stoplight town," Paul is preparing to resume his own studies toward a degree in agricultural education at UGA in January.
"My desire is to either teach a middle school ag program or work in public relations for an agricultural related company," he said.
Together, Gretsch and Paul are a telling reflection of the future of agriculture, where opportunities abound some 300 career options, by Paul's count. And they're available to everyone, regardless of experience or gender.
"One of the coolest things I think I've been able to see is that within FFA specifically we actually have a 50/50 split mem-
bership between boys and girls," Gretsch said. "It's really neat to know that there are a lot of FFA members pursuing ag careers on an equal playing field."
Based on her own personal experience, Gretsch said women have always had an important role in agriculture.
"Growing up my Mom was always a strong supporter of my Dad's work and my Dad has said it's because of my Mom that he was able to have some of the success he's had. (Agriculture) has been a man's world for a while but at the same time the women who stand behind those men are the driving forces and I think those men would tell you that," Gretsch said.
Five of the six members of the National FFA Organization's 2015-16 leadership team are women.
