AGL Develops Leadership for the Future of Agriculture in Georgia

AGL participant Jutt Howard thanks Rep. Jason Shaw of Lakeland for a presentation on olive farming in Georgia.

By Amy H. Carter
If you had engaged Jesse Johnson in a discussion of agriculture five years ago, you'd have heard a lot about trees. A Realtor whose specialty is forestry "I sell dirt and trees," is the simple explanation he gives he's quite the expert in marketing forested land. At the time, he was not unlike any other professional in the ag industry; well-versed in his own field but unable to see the forest for his own trees, so to speak.
Engage Johnson in a discussion of agriculture today, however, and be prepared for a talk that goes far afield of his own specialty and yours, too. The difference is AGL, shorthand for "Advancing Georgia's Leaders in Agriculture and Forestry." Now under the umbrella of the University of Georgia's College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences and the Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources, AGL began 22 years ago with a handful of industry leaders who saw the need to cultivate and grow leaders among the generations coming after them.
Over an 18-month period participants in the program are exposed to a multitude of exercises, scenarios and opportunities to build their knowledge of Georgia's agricultural in-

dustry as a whole; to better understand their own character and the behaviors that motivate others; and to develop their leadership skills.
"It's a multifaceted approach to leadership development," explained Leadership Director Lauren Ledbetter Griffeth. Students of the program meet once a quarter over a span of 18 months. During that time they take personality inventories that assess their own motivations and behaviors; learn how other people process information and think differently from themselves; meet with experts from every facet of Georgia's agriculture industry; and even travel the world to get a better understanding of their own place in it.
Johnson's class spent two weeks in India. The experience taught him two things: too much curry is just too much, and farming in America has come a long way from its roots.
"(India is) the largest producer of dairy in the world and they do it on an average of two cows per farmer," Johnson said. "They still do a lot of hand-milking, the way you would have seen it done here in the 1930s. They are the second largest producer of cotton in the world, and they do it on less than five acres per farmer. We saw agriculture my grandparents talked about."

Notice
Deadline to submit ads for the May 27 issue, including
Farmland for Rent/Lease and Farmland for Rent/Lease Wanted, is noon May 13.

Here are six words we never expected to hear a six-year-old child say: "My favorite food was Brussels sprouts." That was firstgrader Zayvien Dollar's takeaway lesson when the Georgia Department of Agriculture's Feed My School program fed the freshest in Georgia Grown food to the students and faculty of Commerce Primary School in late March.
Feed My School helps bridge the gaps in the nutritional value and quality of food served in Georgia schools by providing more farm-to-cafeteria opportunities. The result is healthier students with an increased awareness of the sources of their food.

"Not only does Feed My School for a Week allow students to learn about where their food comes from, but also how it is grown here in Georgia and the process of how it ends up on your plate," said Agriculture Commissioner Gary W. Black. "It is about offering fresh, healthy Georgia Grown foods that are locally produced while raising awareness about nutrition."
Black attended the final day of the week-long farm-fresh feast at Commerce Primary School March 26, leading the children in songs and joining them in a celebration of their fresh knowledge of Georgia Grown goodness.

GEORGIA GROWN PROFILE: White Oak Pastures
One Family, One Farm, Five Generations of Sustainable Agriculture

Mail to: Published by the Ga. Department of Agriculture Gary W. Black, Commissioner

By Mary Catherine Cromley
White Oak Pastures in Bluffton is a multigenerational family farm that prides itself on producing high-quality artisan products. Confederate Capt. James Edward Harris settled the farm in 1866, and his descendants have continued growing the family brand for 150 years. Marketing Manager Jenni Harris is the fifth generation to tend cattle on the farm, and says one of the top priorities for White Oak Pastures is to maintain a high standard of quality and safety in their products.
"Care is given to ensure that all of our production practices are economically practical, ecologically sustainable, and that our animals are always humanely treated," Harris says. "We never falter in our determination to conduct our business in an honorable manner for the sake of our animals, our land, and the people who eat our products."

Although best-known for its grass-fed beef, White Oak Pastures also raises and hand-butchers nine other breeds of livestock, including grass-fed lamb and pastured hogs. Products from White Oak Pastures are currently available on the East Coast and nationwide through their online store.
White Oak Pastures is one of the many companies reaping benefits from its Georgia Grown membership.
"Commissioner Black has done a wonderful job helping farmers identify what is special about what they do in Georgia," Harris says. "We are proud to have a program that helps such a diverse group of people join together for sharing what we do well, which is agriculture. We are in it together regardless of different practices and techniques. The Georgia Grown program brings us all together for one common goal -- Georgia's economic growth."

GUEST COLUMN: You don't have to be an
expert gardener to master the art of growing
By Happy Wyatt

Georgia Wine Country Festival Marks 14th Year in June

Do you enjoy digging in the dirt? Do you love watching plants grow

and flourish? Do you have the time to volunteer for a worthwhile cause?

If yes, then you are a perfect candidate for the master gardener program.

The master gardener program is designed to help everyday people with

a passion for education and growing things express that love in a very

rewarding way: by sharing it.

You don't have to know a lot about gardening; your mentor in the

master gardener program will teach you all you need to know about

WYATT

horticulture. You might even be able to volunteer in an experimental program that the University of Georgia could be conducting in your

county. Not every county in the state has an extension agent or a master gardener program,

but don't let that little detail stop you. Reach out to the state office in Griffin (griffin@uga.edu

or 770.228.7306) to find the closest office or agent to you.

Master gardeners also take part in a Unites States Department of Agriculture program

called "My plate, my garden," where they volunteer to go into the school systems to inspire

and excite young people to the joys of gardening and better nutrition. Since the master gar-

dener program requires a certain amount of hours of volunteer work to stay qualified, this is

a great way to earn them.

Master gardeners all across the state also put on two flower sales a year to raise money

for events and projects close to their hearts. These sales are a wonderful way for the com-

munity to pick up local plants at a fraction of the cost. You will find everything from fruit

trees, shrubs, and vegetable plants to perennials and annuals. You will also be able to "ask

a master gardener" at these sales. Monies from the sales stay in the community where the

club is able to help fund the junior master gardener program as well as maintain ongo-

ing projects, create teaching gardens, give demonstrations and fund scholarships for local

schools.

There are public gardens around the state that are maintained by local master gardeners.

One of my favorites is the Museum of Arts and Sciences located at 4182 Forsyth Road in

Macon. When you pull into the parking lot there, just off to the right is what at first glance

appears to be a wooded area. Step off the beaten path and walk into the woods and you will

find beautiful native plants tucked in among the trees. As you walk past the pond, you will

see beautiful flowers labeled with plaques identifying them for you. You will even find a

cute little cabin where you can pause and listen to the frogs peep awhile.

This amazing group of people beautifying their communities and our wonderful state

teach our children good stewardship of the land by setting an example, so next time you see

a local master gardener sale advertised, stop in and pick up a few (or a lot) of plants. You'll

be helping to fund projects with your purchase, and most importantly, you'll be thanking a

master gardener for making Georgia a more beautiful state.

Georgia's Centennial Farm Program is Seeking Historic Family Farms
The Historic Preservation Division of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources will be accepting applications through May 1 for Georgia's Centennial Farm Program. Developed in 1993, the program has recognized 469 farms throughout the state that have been owned and operated by the same family for more than 100 years. Each year, qualifying farms are recognized at the opening day of the Georgia National Fair in Perry; the fair runs Oct. 8-18 this year. During the awards presentation, farm owners receive a Georgia Centennial Farm certificate of honor signed by the governor. The Centennial Farm Program is administered by the DNR in a partnership with the Georgia Farm Bureau Federation; Georgia Department of Agriculture; Georgia Forestry Commission; and the Georgia National Fairgrounds and Agricenter. It is sponsored in part by Georgia EMC. Learn more about the qualifications to apply and download an application at georgiacentennialfarms.org. Applications must be postmarked on or before May 1.

Such knowledge is the foundation that future leaders like Johnson will use to tell the story of agriculture in Georgia, the U.S. and the world. It is also the knowledge that will keep agriculture going and growing strong.
Griffeth said the end goal of AGL is to produce leaders who make a difference both inside and outside of the industry, leaders who can tell the story of agriculture in an informed and compelling way and ensure that every Georgian's understanding of one of the state's oldest and most important industries is accurate. "They're learning skills they can take with them as they lead in the industry, skills they may not necessarily train in on the job," Griffeth said.
AGL is accepting nominations for its next class of future leaders. Learn more about the program and download the form to nominate Jesse Johnson learns media relations at the Georgia a future leader at http://www.agl.caes.uga.edu/ Farm Bureau Federation.

Arty's Garden: Clasping Heliotrope is More Than Just a Filler Flower

Clasping heliotrope is a durable and long-blooming perennial. It is shown here in a sidewalk planting strip with tawny daylily.

By Arty Schronce
I love the fragrance and the old-fashioned associations of common heliotrope (Heliotropium arborescens). It smells of vanilla and face powder. I take a whiff and think of elderly ladies from my childhood and hear Scott Joplin's and Louis Chauvin's ragtime melody "Heliotrope Bouquet."
Unfortunately, I have not had success growing it. It seems unable to take the heat or demands more water and care than I can give. Sigh.
Clasping heliotrope (Heliotropium amplexicaule) is another story. I am pressed to think of a more dependable and useful flower for Georgia gardens.
Also known as "trailing heliotrope" and "summer heliotrope," this low-growing, tough-as-nails perennial likes full sun and is a good choice for difficult spots in your perennial garden or landscape. In fact, I have seen it thriving and blooming its little heart out in sidewalk planting strips where it received no care whatsoever. I know a good thing when I see it and planted some in the strip in front of my own house.
Some people consider it only as a filler, a plant to grow amid showier garden specimens. While clasping heliotrope doesn't have the star power of an iris or a daylily, it is more than something that just hides bare ground. Clasping heliotrope is covered with lavender flowers all summer. The flowers, in turn, are covered with fiery skippers, silver-spotted skippers, common buckeyes and other butterflies. Honeybees find it irresistible, too,

and we need to plant flowers that will help honeybees and our native bee pollinators.
Speaking of insects, I have yet to see an insect pest damage or kill clasping heliotrope. And no diseases, either.
While clasping heliotrope does not have the noted fragrance of its cousin, it does have a pleasant grapefruit fragrance on hot afternoons. It is subtle and refreshing but only detectable if the flower is held close to the nose.
The flowers of clasping heliotrope look like rounded stars on two-pronged fiddleheads. Anyone needing cut flowers would find clasping heliotrope invaluable in making small bouquets. Do I hear a ragtime tune? Chauvin and Joplin wrote about the other heliotrope but probably wouldn't mind if we associate clasping heliotrope with their famous composition as well.
Clasping heliotrope was once only available as a passalong plant, one shared from one gardener to another, but is now being sold in nurseries and garden centers. The variety most frequently offered is called "Azure Skies." It is from the Athens SelectTM program of the University of Georgia. I hope their promotional activities will help this durable and versatile perennial find its way into more gardens.
-- Arty Schronce is the Department's resident
gardening expert. He's a lifelong gardener and
a horticulture graduate of North Carolina State
University who encourages everyone to discover the
pleasures of plants and gardening.

FEATURE RECIPE:
Breakfast Cinnamon Spirals

Ingredients: 2 cups self-rising flour + more for rolling 2 tablespoons sugar cup shortening cup buttermilk 1/3 cup butter 1/3 cup brown sugar 1 tablespoon cinnamon

Glaze cup Confectioners sugar 1 tablespoon butter teaspoon vanilla extract 1 tablespoon warm water

Preparation: Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Whisk self-rising flour and sugar in a bowl. Add shortening and pour buttermilk gradually on shortening, kneading the shortening and buttermilk but not the flour. When shortening becomes a smooth paste, gradually pull the flour into mixture. Place some additional flour on work surface; dump dough onto flour. Knead several times until dough is smooth and elastic; 6-8 kneads should do it. Roll out to 12-inch-by-15-inch rectangle. Spread softened butter onto bottom 2/3 of dough. Sprinkle and spread brown sugar over butter, then sprinkle cinnamon. Roll up from bottom, brushing top third with water to seal. Slice into -inch slices. Place on buttered or greased baking sheet. Bake 15-18 minutes or until golden.

Glaze Combine glaze ingredients in a small bowl. Mix until smooth. Drizzle or spread glaze over baked spirals. Makes 16-20 spirals.

Meet the Bobwhite Quail
u In Georgia, Bobwhites are found from the mountains to the coast.
u The birds are grassland-forbshrub habitat dependent, a type of habitat referred to as "early succession."
u Their home range spans anywhere from 40 to 200 acres.
u Bobwhites stand six to seven inches in height and weigh about six ounces.
u Their nesting season extends from March to October; peak season is May through August.
u Bobwhites next on the ground using the previous year's dead vegetation.
u The average clutch size is 12 eggs.

Georgia Pecans Partner with Schwinn Bicycles for Healthy Alliance

Promotion encompasses National Pecan Month and National Bike Month

Georgia Department of Agriculture Commissioner Gary W. Black supports the new healthy alliance between Georgia Pecans and Schwinn Bicycles.

The Georgia Pecan Growers Association and Schwinn Bicycles are joining forces to promote both brands with monthly giveaways through Sept. 30 of Schwinn bicycles, helmets, locks and Georgia Pecans. Consumers can enter the Georgia Pecans/Schwinn Sweepstakes by visiting www.georgiapecan.org.
"Pecans are one of the healthiest products at the grocery store today," says Brad Ellis, president of the Georgia Pecan Growers Association. "Pecans are high in antioxidants and are heart healthy. We promote a healthy lifestyle, and that's why aligning Georgia Pecans with Schwinn is a fantastic fit. With Georgia being the #1 pecan state in the U.S. and Schwinn being the #1 bike brand, this partnership couples two tremendous brands."
The campaign kicked off April 1 at the start of National Pecan Month, and in time for National Bike Month in May. The Georgia Pecan Growers Association represents hundreds of pecan growers throughout the state. Founded in 1895, Schwinn remains one of America's bestselling bicycle brands.
The Georgia Pecans/Schwinn Sweepstakes will be promoted in a variety of ways, including on video screens in New York's Times Square, print advertising, on-pack stickers on pecan packages, so-

cial media, and Schwinn cross-promotional support. The Georgia Department of Agriculture's Georgia Grown campaign will market and publicize the giveaway as well.
"Good health is all about exercise and nutrition, and Schwinn bicycles pro-

vide the exercise, while Georgia Pecans provide the good-for-you nutrition solution," says Milissa Rick, Global Director of Consumer Activation, Schwinn. "Bicycling is a sport for people of all ages young, old, male, female, serious athletes, and weekend warriors."

Georgia Pecan Growers Association representative Candace Spikes shares news with FFA students about the Georgia Pecans/Schwinn Bicycles alliance, the largest promotion in the history of Georgia Pecans. Consumers can enter the Georgia Pecans/Schwinn Sweepstakes by visiting www.georgiapecan.org
