Commissioner Gary W. Black, center front, and members of the trade mission delegation at the Panama Canal Expansion Site.
Panama Canal Expansion and new retail markets
are focus of August trade mission to Panama
Commissioner Gary W. Black led a delegation of diverse agricultural interests on a trade mission to Panama Aug. 23-26. The goal of the trip was two-fold. First, it afforded the delegation an opportunity to explore the importance of the Panama Canal expansion, its maritime connectivity to Georgia's Ports and its intermodal connectivity to Atlanta and the Atlanta State Farmers Market. Second, the mission served to identify future opportunities for the Atlanta Market to serve as the terminal produce market for the southeast and as the point of export for fresh Georgia Grown products throughout the world.
"Georgia agriculture is well-positioned to serve the needs of both the U.S. and beyond, including Central America," Commissioner Black said. "We are very pleased with the relationships we were able to establish and advance through this visit."
The mission bore fruit for Georgia's peanut farmers and associated producers within 24 hours of the delegation's return to the U.S. when buyers for PriceSmart, a chain of membership warehouse clubs similar to Costco, contacted delegate Terry Shamblin seeking a supplier for its house label peanut butter. Shamblin, who is president of the American Peanut Growers Group in Donalsonville, was able to connect PriceSmart's buyers with brokers in Georgia who can put American peanut butter in Central American and Caribbean grocery stores.
While peanut butter is not its forte, the APGG represents 92 peanut producers, processing their crops and marketing some 170 million pounds of shelled peanuts per year. Ten to 15 percent of that total is exported to 30 different countries. In fact, while Shamblin and APGG Director Tommy Dollar of Dollar Farm Products were in

Georgia Grown Profile: The Payne family makes farming fun
By Emani Odumosu
Many people know that if you want your food fresh, you have to go directly to the source. Payne Farm and Produce is one of the many Georgia Farms that provides that experience. The farm's motto is to "provide fresh quality produce to the customer in a friendly family atmosphere."
In 1945, Oscar Payne purchased the Calhoun farm that is now owned by his daughter-inlaw, Ann. Family and community are highly valued at Payne Farm, a place where you can feed your tummy and your soul.
"We have strawberries that you can pick yourself," said Carla Payne, daughter of Ann Payne
and current farm manager. "In the springtime we have a strawberry festival. It is always the Saturday before Mother's day and moms get in free. There's a playground,
so you can come pick strawberries and have a picnic or family outing,"
Strawberries, tomatoes and pumpkins are the farm's most popular items and customers have the option to hand-pick them when they are in season. The selection of fresh produce varies from tomatoes, strawberries, squash, peas
and okra to cucumber, pumpkin, peppers and corn.
Payne Farm's authentic approach extends far beyond produce, with handmade soap and
fresh honey available daily. Even the canned goods are homemade from produce grown on the farm. While Payne Farm cultivates the majority of the produce it sells, commodities are sometimes brought in from other Georgia producers to keep up with demand. For example, apples are provided by R&A Orchards in Ellijay. As fall approaches, Payne Farm is gearing up for its annual Fall and Plow Day festivals featuring arts-and-crafts and food vendors, campfire meals, hay-
rides, a petting barn, an outdoor movie and pumpkins. Payne Farm is all about fun and entertainment, but there is a lot to learn when it comes to owning and managing a farm. The farm hosts school field trips to show children just what it's like to feed people for a living.
With 70 years of hard work in the field, the Payne family is proud to deliver Georgia grown goodness to its customers' tables. That is why they joined the Department of Agriculture's Georgia Grown marketing program.
"Georgia Grown is a great advertisement tool and shows how good of a product Georgia farmers can produce," said Carla Payne. "People recognize the logo."

Guest Column: Georgia
Organics cultivates a ripe
market for Georgia farmers
By James Carr
Opportunities for organic farmers in the state of Georgia have never been more promising.
Combine the drought in California with an increasing demand for organic and local food, plus Georgia's long growing season, and the results are excellent conditions for a ripe market here in Georgia.
As Georgia Organics looked forward over the next five years at our strategic retreat at White Oak Pastures in Bluffton this August, farmer prosperity emerged as our top priority. Through our educational programs, trainings, Organic certification reimbursement, and promotion of markets statewide, Georgia Organics aims to recruit and retain prosperous farmers to create a thriving local food economy. An outgrowth of a grower's association established in the 1970s, Georgia Organics is devoted to promoting organic foods and local farms in Georgia. Recognizing this vital need, Georgia Organics builds the supply of local food through grower education and outreach, and grows demand on the consumer and business end by encouraging market opportunities for local food. As a member supported, non-profit organization connecting organic food from Georgia farms to Georgia families, we believe food should be community-based, not just commodity-based. To accomplish this, we have three key goals: Increase the number of organic and sustainable farmers in Georgia Increase the number of children participating in farmto-school programs Increase the number of Georgians eating local, organic food. One of our major initiatives is our 100 Organic Farms Campaign. Though farmers face many challenges in
converting to organic, Georgia Organics helps farmers through training, marketing promotions and planning and certification cost-share to ensure a successful transition. Thanks to a partnership with the Georgia Department of Agriculture, Georgia Organics and GDA are now reimbursing 100 percent of certification costs up to $1,000 for first-time organic farmers. Georgia Organics' signature event is an annual conference that attracts 1,000 farmers, consumers and advocates to learn about organic farming, community activation, enterprise development, and the health benefits of eating fresh, local produce. On top of these programs and several others, Georgia Organics promotes farmers markets across the state through our My Market Club, which offers discounts and rewards to attract and retain new shoppers at farmers markets and leads the farm-to-school movement in Georgia. We are excited to work with the GDA to advance issues that foster Georgia Grown and organic production in the state. Interested in joining us? Next year's conference takes place in Columbus on Feb. 26-27. You can also become a member to receive a discount to the conference at www. georgiaorganics.org.
James Carr is Communications Coordinator for Georgia Organics in Atlanta.
What does the word "organic" really mean?
And how can you, as a consumer, be sure that the organic meat and produce you are buying is truly organic? The best way is to buy from a farmer you know. Barring that, look for products with the green-and-white USDA seal of approval, which certifies compliance with the "Organic Foods Production Act of 1990." Certification is voluntary, and some farmers who choose to forego it still meet or even exceed the minimum standards. Here are some common misconceptions about the meaning behind an organic label, and the facts of what organic should be according to U.S. law:
All produce, beef and poultry labeled organic is farmed according to U.S. standards.
Organic meat and produce is free of chemicals such as pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers and antibiotics.
Only beef labeled "grassfed" is produced from cattle allowed to forage at pasture.
Products bearing the green-and-white "USDA Organic" seal are certified under the law. Others may meet or exceed the law, depending upon the standards of the producer.
Organic farmers may use certain chemicals to control pests, weeds and disease when natural methods fail. Hormones and supplements that speed growth are not allowed.
All cattle are pastured for forage and grass at some point in their lives; most (except certified grassfed) are finished on grain in confinement.

Red spider lilies add color and drama to fall gardens
By Arty Schronce
Red spider lilies (Lycoris radiata) get their name from the shape of the flowers, with the stamens radiating from the center like a spider's legs sticking out. They are also known as "hurricane lilies" because they break dormancy and bloom at the height of hurricane season, their growth triggered by the rains of September and October.
There is an exotic, even other-worldly quality about red spider lilies in bloom. It is has to do with the unusual, although refined, form of the flower, and that they arise devoid of leaves and pop up almost as fast as mushrooms.
The red spider lily we most often see is a triploid form that never sets seed. It grows fast enough even without seeds provided it is planted shallow and the leaves get sunlight in the winter. The leaves arise after the bulb has bloomed and die back before it blooms again. This growth habit makes red spider lilies good choices for growing in the shade of deciduous trees. How exciting it would be to have a woodland garden filled with these red floral fireworks!
Too often, we think only of springblooming bulbs and forget the many options that bloom in the fall: oxblood lilies, surprise lilies or naked ladies, amarcrinums
and colchichums. There are even fallblooming crocuses. Yes, the symbolic flower of early spring has autumnal members. I love all of these fall bloomers, but red spider lilies with their dramatic "otherness" may be my favorite of the lot.
There are other species of spider lilies in different colors which is why you usually see red included in the common name for Lycoris radiata. However, if gardeners in Georgia talk about their spider lilies, chances are they are referring to the red ones.
Red spider lilies are easy to grow. The bulbs are available from high-quality garden centers and bulb catalogs, Southern Bulb Company and Old House Gardens, to name two. (Southern Bulb Company, PO Box 350, Golden, TX 75444, Phone: 1-888285-2486, www.southernbulbs.com. Old House Gardens, 536 Third St., Ann Arbor, MI 48103, Phone: 734-995-1486, www. oldhousegardens.com.) And, of course, don't forget to check the advertisements or place an ad in the Farmers and Consumers Market Bulletin.

Georgia Department of Agriculture teams with UGA to highlight
diversification of Ag industry on third annual farm tour
By Merritt Melancon
UGA News Service
From vineyards to vegetable patches to state-ofthe-art food processing and food safety operations, agriculture in northeast Georgia is made up of a large and diverse set of enterprises.
Georgia Department of Agriculture Commissioner Gary W. Black and University of Georgia President Jere W. Morehead hosted a delegation of state legislators on a tour of farms, factories and laboratories that contribute to the region and the state's largest industry Sept. 2.
"Candidly, there's nothing more important to the University of Georgia than its linkage with the agricultural industry," Morehead said during one stop on the tour. "This tour gives the university a chance to showcase what the university does for the agricultural industry and how important that industry is, not only to the state today but to the future of the state."
This is the third year Morehead has joined Black and members of the Georgia General Assembly to visit farms and food-based businesses around the state. In 2013 the delegation visited farms in northwest Georgia, and in 2014 they visited farms in southwest Georgia. This year the focus was on northeast Georgia.
"This tour is just another example of our efforts to help connect the dots, and we feel that we did that today with some great dialogue between the businesses visited and the members of our delegation," Black said.
Sen. John Wilkinson, chairman of the Senate Agriculture and Consumer Affairs Committee; Rep. Terry England, chairman of the State House Appropriations Committee; and J. Scott Angle, dean and director of the UGA College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, accompanied Morehead and Black on the tour.
With agritourism, poultry and food manufacturing all playing key roles in northeast Georgia's agricultural economy, the tour covered six points of interest--from Tiger in the north Georgia mountains to Flowery Branch south of Gainesville.
Starting at Tiger Mountain Vineyards, the delegation learned about one of the fastest growing sectors of Georgia's agricultural industry. While still in its infancy, the wine industry in Georgia makes an annual impact of $81.6 million on the state's economy, according to a 2013 report from the UGA Center for Agribusiness and Economic Development.
While in Tiger the tour visited Hillside Orchards, a top producer of specialty jams, jellies and ciders, followed by a stop at Jaemor Farms in Alto, where many of Hillside's products are sold.
Drew Echols, manager at Jaemor Farms and an alumnus of the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, explained how horticultural research at UGA has helped strengthen Jaemor's vegetable and fruit production and helped the farm to grow into an agritourism destination that attracts visitors from all over the country.
Ag and natural resources tourism is a $142.3 million business in Georgia, according to the most recent UGA Farm Gate Value Report.
The delegation stopped at the Georgia Poultry Laboratory Network in Gainesville, which is one of several state-of-the-art facilities built to protect the safety of Georgia's most valuable commodity-- poultry. Georgia's poultry farmers produce $5.2 billion dollars' worth of chicken and eggs each year, according to the farm gate value report.
After touring the poultry lab, the tour stopped at King's Hawaiian Bakery to see how some of those eggs are used. King's Hawaiian Bakery, which produces sweet buttery rolls and loaves of bread, built a plant in Georgia in 2011 that now produces half of the nation's supply of King's Hawaiian Bread.
Food processing businesses in Georgia employ about 60,000 Georgians and make a $12.5 billion contribution to the gross state product annually, according to the Georgia Department of Economic Development.
To round out the tour, the delegation visited Sonstegard Foods, a third generation business that provides eggs and a variety of egg products throughout the U.S. While the majority of Georgia's poultry is raised for meat, eggs are a $7.79 million business in the state, according to the farm gate value report.
Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Gary W. Black, Jaemor Farms manager Drew Echols, state Rep. Terry England, UGA President Jere Morehead, UGA College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Dean J. Scott Angle and others tour a pumpkin patch at Jaemor Farms in Alto during the third annual Department of Agriculture & UGA Farm Tour.
Panama Canal: Atlanta State Farmers Market in line to grow with export opportunities
Continued From Page 1
Panama, a ship laden with Georgia peanuts bound for Colombia was due to transit the Panama Canal.
Given the importance of the Atlanta State Farmers Market to the state's economy, retail was a large focus of the delegation's mission.
The market houses more than 100 separate businesses related to all aspects of food production and distribution, especially retail, and
serves as an incubator for small agricultural businesses by generating approximately $6.2 million in revenue per year with total sales of more than $1 billion.
Members of the Georgia delegation to Panama paid their own travel expenses. The group included representatives from
aquaculture, forestry, pecans, blueberries, olives/olive oil, peanuts, diversified produce, pet and livestock feed.
Delegation members received a briefing on the expansion of the Panama Canal from Canal Administrator Jorge Quijano, followed by a tour of the Panama Canal and expansion sites. The U.S. is the primary customer of the 50-mile canal, which saves 4,000 miles of travel around Cape Horn, South America, for ships sailing between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.
Two cargo ships transit the locks of the Panama Canal.
