Farmers and consumers market bulletin [Vol. 98 [i.e. 102], no. 18 (Sept. 2, 2015)]

GEORGIA DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE GARY W. BLACK, COMMISSIONER WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 2, 2015 VOL. 98, NO. 18 COPYRIGHT 2015
UGA Extension Service sponsors September workshops

to empower Georgia's farmwomen for success

In 2012, 14 percent of the nation's 2.1 million farms had a female principal operator. Current estimates hold that about 301 million acres of U.S. land is farmed or co-farmed by women.
Women are not newcomers to farming. Some come to it as more or less equal partners with their farming husbands; others are thrust into the role of keeping the family farm running through the loss of spouse or parents. Armed with experience, they do alright. Helping them be exceptional is the goal of a set of workshops sponsored by the University of Georgia Extension Service.
Two three-day sessions beginning Sept. 8 in Albany and Perry will empower women

with the knowledge to better care for and contribute to their farms. The workshops will cover human resources, women and money, business plans, alternative enterprises, social style, farm succession, retirement and estate planning, use of spreadsheets, marketing plans and strategies, types of insurance, financial records and more.
Instructors will represent UGA, the USDA, the Farm Service Agency, the UGA Small Business Development Center, the Georgia Farm

Bureau, the Georgia Department of Agriculture, AgGeorgia and local accountants.
"The goal of these workshops is to educate women in farming, give them more confidence and help them make connections in the community," said Charlotte Meeks, the UGA Extension agricultural and natural resources agent in Houston County.
A grant from the Southern Risk Management Education Center, the USDA and the University of Florida allows the workshops to

be offered at no cost. Lunch will be provided each day.
The course of study, called "Annie's Project," was developed in 2003 by University of Illinois Extension educator Ruth Hambleton as a tribute to her mother, Annette Kohlhagen Fleck. Annie Fleck grew up in a small farm town in Illinois, marrying a farmer and spending her life learning how to be an involved business partner with her husband.
Challenges Annie faced included three generations living under one roof; low profitability; changing farm enterprises; and raising four children. She faced pressure from her brother and her sisters-in-law and mother-in-

Georgia Grown Profile: From farm to front door, PeachDish makes fresh food mobile

By Emani Odumosu
As the world progresses more towards an electronic based lifestyle, many industries are beginning to follow the trend.
Atlanta-based PeachDish is a meal kit preparation service that delivers recipes, along with the pre-measured ingredients, right to your front door. Judith Winfrey, PeachDish president and farm owner, has been running the show since 2014.
"Our subscribers can select which recipes they'd like to receive. We measure out all of the ingredients, including fresh produce and frozen protein, (and send it) to their door," said Winfrey.
Meal selection, ordering and payment are done entirely online at www.peachdish.com.
PeachDish has a number of chefs on staff that generate new

recipes on a weekly basis. At first glance the recipes may seem advanced or require too much prep time, but Winfrey assures their recipes are intended to be easily prepared in 30 minutes or less.
"The recipes are tested by home cooks, so we know they are easy to prepare," said Winfrey. "We assume that everyone is a novice cook but we try to make our recipes interesting enough for an accomplished cook to enjoy."
New, unique recipes are created on a weekly basis. Subscribers can order and prepare meals like Potato & Chickpea Curry with Lime Basmati Rice; Chicken Fundida with Gero Chiles &

Squash; and, the southern favorite, Chicken & Dumplings with Field Peas.
There are many successful meal kit delivery services that have taken off around the country, but PeachDish is the only
company in the southeast that is shipping nationally.
"I come from an agricultural background," said Winfrey. "My husband and I have a certified organic farm. I know what great stuff Georgia has to offer and I really wanted to help us get ahead of the curve. I wanted to help put Georgia on the map as far as meal kit delivery services go." Most of the company's pro-

ducers are also Georgia based. They work with certified organic producers like White Oak Pastures in Bluffton, which is one of the largest in the state.
PeachDish joined Georgia Grown this past July and looks forward to working with the program. Georgia producers, especially members of Georgia Grown, are encouraged to contact PeachDish if they are interested in becoming suppliers.
"We'd love to add other growers to the list, and we'd love to know about unique Georgia Grown products that we could feature," said Winfrey. "We do have an online store component and we are trying to curate some of the best brands the south has to offer."
Visit PeachDish.com or email help@peachdish.com for more information.

Guest Column: Special considerations for the marketing and sale of farm, ranch and recreational acreage

By Ben McCollum

For many individuals, the value of their farm, ranch or recreational plantation represents a significant portion of their net worth. Accordingly, when it comes time to sell this asset, careful consideration must be given to the process so that the gain is maximized.
Selling large acreage farms, ranches and recreational properties comes with unique challenges. Before making any decisions, it is advisable to meet with your accountant to determine the tax consequences associated with the sale and what measures can be taken to mitigate or minimize your tax liability. Clearly one of the most important factors to consider when placing your property on the market is price. It is vitally important to consult with a knowledgeable broker and/or appraiser who specializes in the particular property type that you own to make this determination.
A property garners the most attention and activity when it is first placed on the market. That being said, if the list price is not in line with current market valuations the property runs the risk of gathering shelf life and a tremendous amount of sales momentum is lost coming out of the gate. Before actively marketing a property, assimilating relevant data can be extremely helpful to assist prospective buyers in their decision-making process. Any information available on the property such as timber cruises, surveys, easement information, hunting leases and mineral rights will not only make the transaction smoother going forward but can also serve to help support the list price of the property.
Different property types demand drastically different sales approaches. Selling recreational land is an entirely different process than marketing and selling working farms and ranches. Recreational properties are certainly a luxury item given that they typically offer minimal short-term returns and are oftentimes expensive to operate and maintain. Accordingly a seller must recognize this and allow more time to identify prospective buyers seeking out the particular attributes that a property has to offer.
In recent years, the marketplace for recreational land has witnessed a dramatic recovery. This is largely due to the fact that the vast oversupply of inventory has been gradually absorbed combined with a gradually growing economy that has improved buyer sentiment and confidence. Selling recreational land requires a proactive approach. Rarely does simply placing a "For Sale" sign in the ground yield a qualified buyer or achieve full market value. Utilizing a reputable broker is a tremendous benefit as they usually have or can develop an enormous database of interested buyers. As a result an effective broker can greatly expand the reach of the property to a broader audience outside the local market which can result in a much higher sales price.
Working farms and ranches are an entirely different product to sell as individuals' livelihoods are tied to these types of transactions. Despite dropping commodity prices, we are still seeing a high demand for quality farmland, particularly those farms with improved water resources and irrigation systems. What the market seems to be experiencing is a period of consolidation whereby the larger farming operations are absorbing the smaller farms that don't benefit from a broader economy of scale.
We are also seeing a tremendous amount of interest from individual and institutional investors looking to place capital and invest in properties that have large-scale farming operations as well as significant timber reserves. Effectively these organizations represent various private equity, pension fund and insurance companies and are looking for hard assets that represent a conservative investment and demonstrate consistent, long term yields. Again, utilizing a broker with strong institutional and investor ties is crucial in gaining exposure to this particular market sector.
In addition to the traditional brokerage approach, another effective sales technique that should be considered when marketing a farm or recreational property is the auction method. Properties that can benefit from an auction approach demonstrate the following criteria: property consists of multiple parcels or has features which make it easily divisible; property that is held in an estate; property located in an area with multiple interested parties or adjoining landowners; and property that needs to be sold in a defined timeframe. In these instances a live outcry or sealed bid auction may be the most viable option as the sum of the parts are worth more than the whole. Auctions provide an aggressive marketing presence in a very streamlined timeframe and in many instances yield a higher sales price due to the competitive bidding process.
No two properties are alike and accordingly should be individually evaluated and assessed. Identifying and utilizing professional appraisers, accountants and brokers will help make the difficult process as smooth as possible and ensure that the seller's best interests are served while maximizing their sales proceeds.
Ben McCollum, a native of Thomasville, holds a bachelor's degree in forest resources. He founded The Wright Group to specialize in the marketing and sale of the
unique timberland, recreational and historic properties found in Southwest Georgia.

Future farmers and chefs cultivate
foodies with weekly Green Market
Every Thursday from noon until 2 p.m. students of the Horticulture Program at Gwinnett Technical College in Lawrenceville host a Green Market where they sell fruits, vegetables, flowers, herbs and assorted goodies they grow in both the on-campus garden and in the school's greenhouses. The market also sells pickles made from cucumbers grown on campus by students enrolled in GTC's Culinary Arts program. The culinary students also get first pick of the produce of the garden for a series of Farm-to-Table lunches that are open to the community, offering a farm-fresh three-course meal for just $15.
The market is coordinated by student farm manager Tylee Sewell of Lithonia (shown above), the college's 2015 Distinguished Student. A single mother attending college for a "second chance," Sewell is renowned for her green thumb. In March Sewell was awarded two national horticulture scholarships, from the Professional Grounds Management Society and from the Professional Landcare Network.
For more information on the Green Market, contact Sewell at 678.226.6557.

Arty's Garden: A few fast facts about hummingbirds

By Arty Schronce

Although sometimes described as "flying jewels," hummingbirds can be drab as an army blanket. Their feathers are iridescent and only glow under certain light conditions. Here is a juvenile male whose red throat feathers are beginning to come in.

The most common hummingbird species in Georgia is the ruby-throated hummingbird. Only the adult male has the ruby throat, however, and it only glows like a jewel when the light hits it just right. The rest of the time it may appear black. These are photos of the same bird.

Sound and movement, not color, usually make me spy a hummer. What catches my eye may be leaves
moving in the downdraft from a hummingbird hovering one or two feet above or a flower stalk nodding back and forth because it is being prodded by a hummer. Sound also gives hummingbirds away. You are not going to hear the "humming" wings unless you are very close to one. Learn their vocalizations. They emit high-pitched squeaks that make Alvin and the Chipmunks sound like baritones. Here is a hummingbird probing anisacanthus. The wings will appear as a blur to the naked eye.

Feeders can bring hummingbirds close. I was sitting in my porch swing two feet away when this one came to eat. You don't have to have a feeder to attract hummers. Plant their favorite flowers. Hummingbirds were feeding at flowers long before people began mixing sugar water. Their favorite flowers in my garden are Bidwill's hybrid coral bean (Erythrina x bidwillii) and anise-scented salvia (Salvia guaranitica). I haven't put up a feeder this year; I was having a hard enough time keeping my own dishes clean.
If you have hummingbird stories or tips, please write Arty Schronce at arty.schronce@agr.georgia.gov or 19 MLK Jr. Drive, Agriculture Building, Room 128, Atlanta, GA 30334.

Georgia Artists' exhibit preserves a fading way of rural life

Urbanization is devouring the rural landscape of America at a rate of about 50 acres per hour. According to the American Farmland Trust, 37 percent of America's developed land was converted from agriculture in the last 30 years.
American agriculture has reached a crossroads. The majority of American farmers are 55 and older, and few of their children are opting to carry on the family legacy. More than 240 million acres of farmland are expected to change hands in coming years, a figure that promises even greater loss to come.
The average age of farmers in Georgia is 59.9 years, older than the national average, and the reminders of their way of life are slowly fading. What remains is the inspiration for an ongoing exhibition of multimedia artwork by a group of Georgia artists intent upon rendering a fading way of life before it's gone.
Abandoned Rural America: The Transition of the American Small Family Farm was initiated by artist Peter Muzyka of Madison in 2011. It is an evolving project to record the vacant farmhouses, crumbling barns, rusting farm implements, and fallow fields falling into neglect before they are lost altogether to urban encroachment.
Muzyka has recruited 11 fellow Georgia artists to record what's left before it's gone. There are painters, potters, photographers, videographers, musicians and writers all committed to the cause.
"It is our fervent hope, through various mediums of art, photography, video, and the written word, to

capture and preserve a glimpse of a passing way of American life before it disappears," Muzyka said.
The artists of Abandoned Rural America send an exhibit of their works all over the state for display. The latest exhibit will be housed at the Crawford Depot at 1158 Athens Road (GA Route 78) in Crawford, east of Athens, from Sept. 26 Oct. 25.
For more information about the project, visit www.abandonedruralamerica.com.

Georgia Grown will cultivate new fans at the Decatur Book Festival on Labor Day Weekend

The Georgia Department of Agriculture is highlighting the "culture" in Agriculture at the 2015 Decatur Book Festival in Atlanta. Sponsored by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and the city of Decatur, the festival unites book lovers with their favorite authors through a series of book-centered events.
Seem like an odd atmosphere for aggies? Not so much, if you consider the roots of Georgia's rich literary tradition. Margaret Mitchell's epic and enduing historical romance, Gone With the Wind, revolves around a plantation, and that's really just a fancy word for a farm, right?
Another of Georgia's famous wordsmiths, Flannery O'Connor, found the inspiration to write two of her mostloved stories A Good Man is Hard to Find and Wise Blood on a Milledgeville farm named Andalusia.
And then there was Byron Herbert Reece, a true farmerwriter, whose hardscrabble existence on a small family farm in the mountains of North Georgia fueled a prolific if tragically brief career as a poet and novelist.
"A true writer has a lot of seeds in their soul. Those seeds are stories," said Renea Winchester, a Georgia author and farmer who has found success writing what she knows. Her friendship with Billy Albertson, the last farmer to be found in the Atlanta suburb of Roswell, was the basis for Farming, Friends, and Fried Bologna Sandwiches published by the Mercer University Press. The book will be featured in the

Mercer Press booth at the festival. Farming and writing take a similar tenacity, Winchester
said. "There's a lot of people who want to be writers. There's
a lot of people who want to grow their own tomatoes. But the people who are actually successful are the ones who don't give up even when something fails. There's no overnight success and no overnight harvest," Winchester said.
Raised on a farm just outside of Bryson City, N.C., Winchester said she's drawn to farmers in life and in writing because of their wisdom.
"Farmers know more than any other person that life is a gamble," Winchester said. "We don't control anything we're doing. We have no control. It's just work and dirt and faith

and hope." That's the spirit that will be on display in the Georgia
Grown Culinary Village at the Decatur Book Festival. Several Georgia Grown producers who've partnered with the Depart-
ment of Agriculture to expand the markets for their goods will be sharing their bounty with 100,000 visitors at the festival. Top Georgia chefs will also be demonstrating dishes prepared with local ingredients.
"This is a great opportunity to highlight Georgia's agricultural products and top culinary talent to a large audience," said Matthew Kulinski, Deputy Director of Marketing at the Georgia Department of Agriculture. "The Decatur Book Festival is a really unique event that will help us bring together the culinary and literary culture of Georgia." The AJC Decatur Book Festival is the largest independent book festival in the country and one of the five largest overall. Since its launch, more than 1,000 world-class authors and hundreds of thousands of festival-goers have crowded the historic downtown Decatur square to enjoy book signings, author readings, panel discussions, an interactive children's area, live music, parades, cooking demonstrations, poetry slams, writing workshops, and more. For more information about the festival, go to www.decaturbookfestival.com or call 404.471.5769.

"Farm Friends"
celebrates 25
years at Gwinnett
County Fair
In 1991, 4-H Program Assistants Sharon Cassidy and Audrey Hardin decided Gwinnett 4-H had served enough funnel cakes at the Gwinnett County Fair. They wanted to educate youth and adults about farm animals and farm products. Thus was born the Gwinnett 4-H Petting Zoo.
"Youth in our urban area think that milk comes from a container," said Sharon Cassidy. "We have educated over 500,000 youth in our years at the Gwinnett County Fair."
Now called "4-H Farm Friends," the zoo teaches fun facts like how many glasses of milk a cow produces. Kids and adults can watch baby calves drink from big baby bottles, and rub the ears of the zoo's resident donkey, "Miss Ellie," who celebrates her fifth birthday this year.
Administered by UGA's Extension Service, 4-H teaches leadership, public speaking skills and community service to kids in grades 5 12. Gwinnett 4-H will be at the 2015 Gwinnett County Fair in Lawrenceville Sept. 17 27.

law. Through it all, she kept meticulous records. To increase cash flow, she sent her husband to work off
the farm, taking over the duties of milking cows and keeping an egg route in Chicago. Finally concluding that other farmers with better equipment and more resources could better run their farm, Annie and her husband became landlords renting to other farmers. She paid expenses and marketed corn and soybeans.
Annie was married to her farmer for 50 years. She died in 1997 a wealthy woman who had blazed her own trail in a man's world, and inspired her daughter, Ruth, to help other farm women learn from her mother's triumphs and mistakes.
The UGA sessions mark the first time the Annie's Project curriculum has been taught in Georgia. The workshops will be Sept. 8, 15 and 29 in Albany, and Sept. 8, 15 and 22 in Perry. They are being presented by the Dougherty County and Houston County Extension offices.

A farm with a past: How one man's
passion for log cabins saved a
forgotten piece of Cherokee history
By Amy Carter
When Kerry Hix bought Rockdale Plantation outside Calhoun about 20 years ago, he bought more than a farm; he bought two centuries of history much more complicated than the word "plantation" would even imply.
The 47-acre estate, certified by the National Park Service as a Trail of Tears Historic Site, straddles the Sally Hughes Road, a Native American trade route named for a Cherokee woman who owned and operated a ferry on the nearby Etowah River. The road was one of a network of Indian routes in Georgia that formed the path of the "Trail of Tears" that forced the Cherokee to leave their ancestral lands in North Georgia and relocate to Oklahoma.
The fact of the forced removal of the Cherokee is all the more poignant here, on a homestead believed to have been established by George Washington Adair, a Cherokee signer of the Treaty of New Echota that ceded Cherokee land to the U.S. government, leading to the forced removal of a nation of people.
Hix can put his hands on the very logs that a Cherokee builder perhaps Adair himself placed to form the foundation of his family's home. He can also trace the change of ownership from Cherokee to whites in the divergent building styles that mark addition and expansion, attesting to the growth of families and fortunes that transformed a small one-and-a-half story log cabin just one-room wide into a three-story, white-columned mansion with two wings to anchor it.
"It tells a story," Hix said. Making note of angled windows and the perceptible lean of the house, he said it's obvious the second set of builders didn't know as much as the first when it came to constructing a home from hand-hewn logs. Hix is a purist, and as such emulates the ways of the original builders in his restoration of the house (which does include, however, electricity and indoor plumbing). A specialist in building and restoring log cabins, Hix has spent his life traveling the back roads of the south, scouting old farms for log cabins he disassembles, restores and reassembles for clients throughout the Southeast. This one, while bound for sale eventually, will only go to someone as devoted to it as its current custodian.
