Focus turns to farm vehicle safety as fall harvest requires highway travel
By Amy Carter
Fall harvest is on the horizon, which means more heavy farm machinery will be traveling the roadways of Georgia, shuttling between fields and farms to work. Because the top speed of most tractors is between 15 and 25 miles per hour, accidents with fastmoving passenger vehicles are all too common.
That's why Georgia Department of Agriculture Commissioner Gary W. Black and the Governor's Office of Highway Safety will be on the road in September and October promoting farm vehicle safety statewide.
"Too many families have endured far too much physical and emotional pain in recent years because of farm and motor traffic accidents," Black said. "The vast majority of these accidents, injuries and deaths were avoidable. As farmers we must all make lighting and signage a priority. By partnering again with the Governor and Highway Safety Director Harris Blackwood, my hope is that we can also significantly elevate the awareness of the traveling public during
the balance of 2015." Harris Blackwood, director of the Georgia Gov-
ernor's Office of Highway Safety, said the number of crashes between farm equipment and passenger vehicles is an ongoing concern.
According to statistics from Blackwood's office, a total of 2,438 collisions of passenger and farm vehicles occurred in Georgia between 2009 and 2014. The number of fatalities in such accidents more than doubled from 10 in 2013 to 21 in 2014, as did injuries. Over the span of those five years, 4,760 vehicles were involved in accidents involving farm machinery on the highways of Georgia.
"For four years, we have been working with the Georgia Department of Agriculture, the Georgia Farm Bureau Federation and other groups to promote safety for farm equipment on the road. We continue to remind motorists of their responsibility to share the road with farmers and their equipment," Blackwood said. "At the same time, we know that farmers have a responsibility to be as visible as possible and use all

Farm Vehicle Safety:
p Georgia law requires the attachment of a slow-moving vehicle reflector to the back of any machine that travels the road slower than 25 mph. Always point the triangle up, keep the SMV emblem clean to maximize reflectivity, and replace the emblem when it fades, normally every 2 -3 years.
p Mark the edges of tractors and machines with reflective tape and reflectors. Consider installing retrofit lighting on older machinery to increase visibility.
p Turn on your lights, but turn off rear spotlights when going onto the road. From a distance they can be mistaken for headlights.
p Avoid the highway during rush hours and bad weather. Do not drive before sunrise or after sunset.
p Use pilot cars, one in front and one in back, if you are going a long distance. Hang orange flags out of the windows of these pilot vehicles.
p Consider installing mirrors on equipment to enable you to be aware of motorists around you.

GEORGIA GROWN PROFILE: PREP Cook | Create | Connect gives foodie entrepreneurs a place to grow
Mail to: Published by the Ga. Department of Agriculture Gary W. Black, Commissioner
By Emani Odumosu
Have you ever enjoyed a great meal from a local food truck and wondered, "How do they prepare all of this amazing food in such limited space?"
The answer, at least for metro Atlantans, is PREP Atlanta, a facility that provides shared commercial kitchen space and other resources for small business owners within the food industry.
The facility, which opened in May of 2014, is the first shared kitchen in the southeast to be approved by the USDA, FDA, Georgia Department of Agriculture, State Department of Public Health and DeKalb County Health Department.
While there are a number of shared kitchen providers in Georgia, PREP raised the bar with its
concept. "PREP is not a traditional
shared kitchen and we are not an incubator," said Michele Jaffe, PREP's founder and director of sales and marketing. "We have incubator-like amenities which provide resources and guidance to help small food businesses take their business to the next level."
Jaffe built the concept of PREP from the ground up. It all started with her dream of becoming a specialty food producer after years of working in corporate America. After doing extensive research she decided she needed a shared kitchen.
Jaffe and her husband, real estate developer Mitch Jaffe, part-
nered with restaurateurs Doug Marranci and JR Santos to create PREP Cook | Create | Connect. The combination of their professional backgrounds was a recipe for success. PREP is now the base
of operations for 93 small food business owners, and that number is likely to rise. In addition to providing physical space for food prep, the facility offers a number of services to its members, including wholesale food and supply procurement. "Most small food businesses do not qualify for wholesale pricing, but when you bring everybody together they qualify significantly. We go out and represent everybody to companies like U.S.
Foods, Gordon, PFG and Destiny Organics," Jaffe said
The PREP team joined the agriculture department's Georgia Grown marketing program for the wide exposure it gives them to producers statewide, and considers it a valuable tool for its members.
"We encourage all of our members to join and take advantage of the many resources that Georgia Grown offers to local specialty food producers and bakers," Jaffe said.

Monsanto Fund lets farmers direct donations to rural communities in need
A pair of Texel rams shipped to Puerto Rico from Georgia in May. This photo was snapped before a pre-flight bath scrubbed the red tint of Georgia clay from the rams' coats. "We were tempted to refer to them as rare apricot colored sheep but fortunately (the clay) washed out," owner Patrea Pabst said.
The brotherhood of the
traveling sheep
W hen Patrea Pabst was asked to ship two Texel sheep rams to Puerto Rico in May, she knew things could get woolly. "Texels are the fastest growing breed of sheep in the world," she said. Purebred Texel lambs reach a market weight of 100 pounds by the age of four months.
Pabst was shipping two rams that were born in February and weighed 90 pounds each at three months of age, making them just light enough to fly air cargo in extra-large dog carriers. At 100 pounds, they would have had to travel by more expensive transport service.
The sheep will be crossed with smaller and slower growing sheep raised for meat in Puerto Rico.
Texel sheep were originally developed in Holland, then crossed with other breeds to create British, French and Australian strains. Pabst started about four years ago with British Texels, which are characterized by high weight gain, very high quality white wool and sweet easy temperaments.
Pabst owns Beaver Creek Farm in Elbert and Hall counties, specializing in double muscled Piedmontese cattle and Texel sheep. Learn more at www.beavercreekpiedmontese.com.
America's Farmers Grow
Communities will partner again with farmers to award more than $3.3 million to community nonprofits across the country. In Georgia, 34 organizations will receive donations in 2016. Sponsored by the Monsanto Fund, the program's purpose is to make a positive impact in rural communities by giving farmers a chance to direct $2,500 donations to eligible nonprofit organizations of their choice. Farmer enrollment for Grow Communities is open through Nov. 30.
Since the program's inception, Grow Communities has helped fund a broad cross-section of organizations which reflect the makeup and character of rural America. For example, in Calhoun County, farmers Jennifer and Kevin Hatcher directed a $2,500 donation to the Southwest Georgia Academy in Damascus. The school used the funds to update their equipment and purchase computers for the elementary school's technology lab.
"It's a great honor to be a winner for Grow Communities," said Kevin Hatcher. "As a private school, they need help with funding, whether it is tuition, books, or other items. We wanted to do something to help the kids."
Farmers have also directed donations to help fire departments purchase equipment and complete training, send FFA and 4-H groups to contests and conventions, provide food pantries with meals to serve those in need and boost agriculture curriculum in rural school districts. Other beneficiaries of the program have included health care organizations, youth and community centers, state parks and economic development programs, among many others.
"Thanks to the participation of farmers from across the country, more than 7,000 nonprofit organizations have received donations through Grow Communi-
ties in the past five years," said Deborah Patterson, Monsanto Fund president. "We are excited to team up with farmers once again to help support the causes that mean the most to them and strengthen rural America."
Georgia farmers can enroll in the program and find a complete list of program rules and eligibility information at www.GrowCommunities.com or by calling 877.267.3332. Program winners will be announced in January. Follow Grow Communities' new Facebook page to learn more about the program and connect with past winners at facebook.com/AmericasFarmersGrowCommunities.
The Monsanto Fund, the philanthropic arm of the Monsanto Company, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to strengthening the communities where farmers and Monsanto Company employees live and work. Visit the Monsanto Fund at www.monsantofund.org.
America's Farmers programs:
u Offer farmers the chance to win $2,500 for their favorite local nonprofit organization.
u Support rural education by offering farmers the chance to nominate local school districts, which can compete for a $10,000 or $25,000 merit-based grant to enhance math and science education.
u Give students who are pursuing careers in agriculture the opportunity to earn a $1,500 scholarship.
u Celebrate women in agriculture by offering the chance to win up to $10,000 and the title of "National Farm Mom of the Year."

Common Market Georgia is Creating New Market Opportunities for Georgia Farmers
Are you a Georgia farmer? In order to identify local farm food producers around the state, and particularly those looking to enter or expand access to wholesale markets, Common Market Georgia is inviting farmers to take a brief survey.
Based in Atlanta, Common Market Georgia is working to link farms and value added producers with wholesale market opportunities through aggregation, distribution and support for farmers. Farmers who complete the survey will also be included in a wholesale directory to be published in 2016 and targeted to companies that are looking to source local food.
You can take the survey online at http://goo.gl/forms/aQ2woBT0Fv, or call The Common Market Georgia at 678.343.9525, ext. 21.
Judge Eddie Hulsey of Tallapoosa stands by his 60 lb. pumpkin. It measures 50 inches around. The pumpkin started from seeds left over from last year's attempt to grow one. The seeds were planted indoors, then transplanted to the garden spot, located in the Corinth Community outside of Buchanan. No fertilizer was needed; just a daily dose of water and a little TLC.

ARTY'S GARDEN: Let goldfinches bring the party to your garden
By Arty Schronce
Goldfinches seem to enjoy life. This week I have been watching their acrobatics as they eat seeds from sunflowers and zinnias, and listening to their clear song that sounds like the voice of happiness. And they are almost always in a group a flock party, if you will. When they fly away, singing as they go, they depart in a roller-coaster flight pattern as if flying in a straight line wouldn't be as much fun.
Goldfinches are found throughout Georgia, but only breed in the northern part of the state. In spring and summer, adult males are bright yellow with a black forehead and black wings with white markings. Adult females are duller yellow beneath and olive above. In winter the male will lose his black cap, and both male and female will look similar, an unstreaked yellowish brown with black or blackish flight feathers.
Their coloration and singing led explorers to call them "wild canaries." Goldfinches are more fun to watch than a canary, however, and you'll never have to clean their cage.
Consider planting flowers to attract goldfinches. Sunflowers are the best choice. Select varieties with lots of flowers instead of a variety that produces only one giant flower per plant. Mexican sunflower or tithonia is another good choice. This year goldfinches have been plucking the petals (technically called ray flowers) off my zinnias and eat-
A male and female goldfinch feast on sunflower seeds from sunflowers growing in an island in an Atlanta parking lot proof that almost any spot can be made more beautiful and beneficial to wildlife with flowers.
ing the attached seeds as well as eating the mature seed heads. I don't mind. Goldfinches also eat the seeds of purple coneflowers. Purple coneflowers are perennials that can be grown from seed but are usually purchased as plants from nurseries. Other perennials that are on the goldfinch menu are black-
eyed Susans, cut-leaf coneflowers, native asters and goldenrods.
Although not generally considered a garden-worthy plant, our native thistle is a goldfinch favorite. They eat the seeds and use the attached down to build their nests. Goldfinches nest later than most other birds,
and naturalists have long seen their nesting and the thistle blooming as connected.
By the way, the "thistle" seed you buy to feed goldfinches, pine siskins and other small birds is not really a thistle at all. It is a yellow African daisy, and the seeds have been heat treated to prevent them from germinating. The seeds are properly called niger seed. It looks like thistle seed, and since goldfinches love thistle seed, niger began to be called "thistle." Goldfinches are also fond of the small "black oil" sunflower seed, too. It is less expensive than niger seed.
If you have dandelions in your lawn, goldfinches will gobble those seeds up as well. If you have seen a moving yellow carpet of goldfinches eating dandelion seeds in the spring, you may never consider dandelions a weed again.
It's really too late this year to sow annuals for goldfinches, but it's never too early to start planning. October and November will be ideal times to plant their perennial favorites, however, and there are feeders that can be put up any time of year.
I'll probably never know if goldfinches actually enjoy life, but I do know they make my life more enjoyable.

Farm Boot Camp keeps kids busy and learning in summer
Every summer, Lacoda Farms in Nicholson hosts Boot Camp, an agriculture-intensive camp for children ages 3 to 13. The camp was created by Macy Seagraves, a livestock enthusiast and former 4-Her and Georgia Junior Cattleman of the Year from Jackson County. Boot Camp started four years ago with 16 children in attendance. This year hosted 80 campers. Each day began at 9 a.m. with a Bible lesson and Scripture memory. Then it was off to the barn to feed the cows, chickens, pigs and goats. Activities included:
u Washing, brushing and preparing cows for livestock showing
u Education and practice in goat showing, along with a "mock" goat show
u Feeding the animals u Education lessons on farm topics such as the life
cycle of farm animals and how food gets from the pasture to the plate u Cooking lessons, etiquette and Southern hospitality tips for girls.

FARM VEHICLE SAFETY: After-market lighting kits enhance safety
From Page 1
the safety tools, such as good lighting. Our hope continues to be that we will see a reduction in these types of crashes."
Most of the crashes involving cars/trucks and farm equipment are rear-end crashes. Rear-end crashes often result in tractor drivers being ejected from open cab tractors and being thrown against the glass of a closed cab. Such incidents have resulted in both serious injury and death.
"While we are not advocating any type of mandatory tractor seatbelt law, wearing the manufacturer installed seatbelt is a good option when you are on a highway," Blackwood said.
State law requires that any vehicle designed to operate at speeds less than 25 mph be fitted with a slow-moving vehicle emblem, the familiar red-orange reflective safety triangle, on the rear. Leighton Alston, a farmer near Roopville in Carroll County, said farm operators in his area supplement the triangle with the factory flashers installed on their tractors and gators.
"But that's not enough anymore," Alston said. Early this year in Carroll County, a passenger car collided with a tractor traveling along a four-lane road, knocking the tractor upside down and against the guardrail. The tractor
driver was ejected and crushed to death. The automobile's occupants were flown from the scene to Atlanta hospitals.
With harvest season approaching, Alston said he and his neighbors are concerned that more accidents are possible.
"We are trying to determine what kind of lights we can use on our equipment to better protect us," he said. "Lots of good LED lights are now on the market, however, there is much confusion about what types and colors of lights are legal for us to use to protect our lives and equipment."
While state law does not currently require a specific type or color of safety lighting on farm machinery, Blackwood said that amber lights are the color of choice.
"Amber signals that a vehicle is moving, as opposed to red which indicates stopped," he said.
Amber also is a brighter color of light, making it easier to see.
Most tractors come with a sealed beam rear light that is designed to be used in the field. This should be used only if necessary when driving a tractor on the highway, Blackwood said. The bright light may temporarily blind a driver behind the tractor. However, if it is the only light, Blackwood said to use it.
The marketplace does offer a number of lighting packages to supplement factory-installed lighting on farm equipment.
"A number of auto parts manufacturers now make 12 volt strobe lights with magnetic mounts that can attach to the top of a cab on an enclosed tractor or on the roll bar in an open cab model. These can be purchased online or at auto parts retailers for as little as $20. Some come with a connector to insert into a cigarette lighter, or can be wired into the tractor's existing lighting system," Blackwood said.
There are also a number of manufacturers who offer magnetic mounted emergency lights that can be attached to a trailer or an implement being towed behind a tractor. They can be seen for as much as a mile and operate on AA batteries.
"These would work well on cotton or peanut wagons, whether being pulled by a tractor or a truck," Blackwood said.
Check with farm equipment dealers, auto parts suppliers, hardware stores or online retailers such as gemplers.com, northerntool.com or tractorsupply.com for after-market lighting kits that can be installed to enhance the safety of farm vehicles traveling the highways of Georgia.
