Georgia Pecan Company Changes Consumers' Perspective
South Georgia Native, and third generation pecan grower, Scott Craft opened Georgia Pecan Company in September 2011 with his wife Janice. Georgia Pecan Company is located in Sylvester, Georgia, and sits on an eight acre campus with a large facility of 55,000 square feet.
The pecan business is family affair for the Craft's. Seven out of the eight Craft children work for Georgia Pecan Company. Craft says that his passion for the pecan industry is what keeps him motivated. "You either love it or hate it," Scott said. He was introduced to the pecan industry as a child through his father and
grandfather, who were also pecan growers. Georgia Pecan Company serves as one
of South Georgia's hottest agritourism stops, offering a bakery, deli, fruit stand and store that are open to the public yearround. Known by locals for its famous Cuban sandwich, the company also sells pecan pies, cakes, pralines, pastries, raw honey, as well as candied and roasted pecans.
Georgia Pecan Company employees 27 individuals at the Sylvester location and is open Monday Friday from 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. and Monday - Saturday during the harvest season.

Vidalia Onions
Shipping Date Set
For Market Season
Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Gary W. Black announced March 25 that the official "Shipping Date" for the 2013 Vidalia Onion Marketing Season is April 15, 2013.
The shipping date is based on the recommendation of the Vidalia Onion Advisory Panel under the authority of the law, rules and regulations applicable to Vidalia onions.
Vidalia onions may be shipped prior to April 15th ONLY if each and every load being shipped has a Federal-State Inspection Certificate stating the onions have met the established grade requirements and are under "Positive Lot Identification" as approved by the FederalState Inspection Service. "Baby" Vidalia onions with greens attached also may be shipped earlier in the season.
"The Federal-State Inspection assures the quality of the onions and that they have matured to meet the marketing standards," Commissioner Black said. "Onions that are

GDA Hosts Listening Session on FDA's Proposed Safety Rule
Produce farmers and packers learned more about the federal government's proposed produce safety rule at a listening session March 20 at locations in Atlanta, Macon and Tifton.
During the listening session, individuals had the opportunity to learn about the new proposed safety rule, and the chance to ask questions of FDA and state food safety officials. The FDA listening session took place from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Georgia Department of Agriculture (GDA) headquarters in Atlanta, with interactive broadcasts being held simultaneously at the Macon State Farmers Market and UGA Tifton Campus.
"The proposed produce safety rule will mean big changes for some of Georgia's produce farmers and packers and it's critical they learn everything they can about it," said Agriculture Commissioner Gary W. Black, who hosted the meeting.

THE MARKET BULLETIN

Advertising Guidelines Bulletin Publishes Every Other Week
All advertisements published in the Market Bulletin must relate to the farming/agricultural industry or be a part thereof; any and all item(s) submitted for sale through the BULLETIN must meet at least one of the following criteria: 1) must be produced by the advertiser on his/her own farming operation, 2) must be made by the advertiser from materials on his/her own farming operation, 3) must be owned and used by the advertiser on his/her own farming operation for a period of at least 90 days prior to offering for sale through the BULLETIN. Businesses, corporations, dealerships or other commercial enterprises are not allowed to place classified advertisements in the MARKET BULLETIN. Commercial is defined as intended for mass market; handling large quantities of product for distribution (i.e., more than normal household or farm quantities); supported by advertisement (I.e., advertisement in publications other than the BULLETIN; listed as "business" in telephone directories or "yellow pages", etc.). Other indicators include, but are not limited to, holding business licenses and holding regulatory licenses/permits/registrations. Georgia residents only may advertise in the Market Bulletin with the following exception: out-of-state residents may advertise only in the Out-of-State Wanted category. The editor has the authority to designate the length of ads and the number of ads that may be placed by a family unit in any issue of the BULLETIN. Currently, only one (1) notice may be placed by any family unit in any issue of the BULLETIN. Family unit refers to all individuals sharing the same residence, address or telephone number. Ads must be received no later than designated deadline in order to appear in the following issue. Ads submitted via our website will be scheduled automatically for the next available issue. Ads will be published only once each time submitted unless the advertiser specifies on the notice that the ad is to be published more than once. Ads may be published for two (2) consecutive issues. A new notice must be submitted if the advertiser wants the advertisement to continue more than two issues. Note: Some ad categories are published infrequently and are published only once per submission. Please check ad category headings for publication frequency prior to submitting notice. There is a 20-word limit for advertisements except as noted under category headings (special categories that are published only monthly, quarterly or bi-annually, have a 30word limit). Advertiser's name, town, phone number or name and complete address must be included within the word limit. The Market Bulletin reserves the right to edit notices. Most advertisers include a telephone number in their ads, but mailing address may be published in lieu of phone number. However, it is important that advertisers provide a phone number when submitting ads in the event Bulletin ad personnel need to contact them concerning their ads. Advertisers who do not want a telephone number printed in their ads should note this fact when submitting the notice to the Bulletin. Each notice submitted for publication must be in writing; ads cannot be taken by telephone. Notices may be submitted by U.S. mail, facsimile transmission, or via the Internet through the Market Bulletin website.
Notices sent via mail or fax must be legible, on a single sheet of paper separate from any other notice, and be accompanied by the name of the category and the name, mailing and street address (es) and telephone number of the person submitting the same. Send ads to:

Items for sale or services offered in any notice must conform to all laws and regulations covering sale and movement of the same. Ads for some categories must meet certain requirements. Equine For Sale
If you have questions regarding ads in this category, call 404-651-9081.
All equine advertised in the Market Bulletin must have had a negative Coggins test within past 12 months. Negative reports are valid for 12 months from the sample date. A copy of this test report must accompany the ad each time it is submitted or the notice will be returned to the advertiser. For this reason, generalized ads (i.e., many horses, varieties to choose from, others, etc.) cannot be accepted. Buyers are urged to request verification of a negative Coggins test before purchasing any equine. Any falsification of Coggins tests can result in fines and/or suspension of advertising privileges in the Market Bulletin. This regulation also applies to equine advertised in the "At Stud" and "Boarding" categories of the quarterly equine editions.

Any person engaged in buying live poultry of any kind for resale, or in selling live poultry of any kind bought for the purpose of resale, must be licensed by the Georgia Department of Agriculture. Possessing such a license does not by itself disqualify an individual from advertising poultry in the Market Bulletin; however, advertisers should note that all livestock (which includes poultry), must have been in possession of the advertiser for a minimum of 90 days or, in the case of chicks, ducklings, etc., must have been raised by the advertiser before offering them for sale in the Market Bulletin. Mallard ducks must be at least three generations from the wild before they can be advertised in the Market Bulletin. Advertisers must include this information in notices submitted for publication.

the reputation of this important crop."
Most in the industry are still reeling
from the 2012 crop, where growers say
historically
higher-than-normal
temperatures during the growing season
spurred smaller sizes and the onset of a
particularly virulent strain of downy
mildew, the combination of which resulted
in roughly one-third reductions in
marketable yields. Storage facilities last
season remained largely un-filled, which
resulted in a shortened season.
Vidalia growers feel generally upbeat
and optimistic regarding this upcoming
crop. Most are reporting great stands,
uniform growth and a general low-
incidence of plant disease all pointing to a
great crop. Conversely, many are
concerned about the recent (and forecasted)
cooler-than-normal temperatures. The
expectation now is this will slow maturity
and the onset of harvest to the point, many
believe, that few quality supplies will be
available much before April 15. Georgia
Vidalia onion growers plan to harvest
more than 12,000 acres of Vidalia onions
in 2013.
Vidalia onions are unique to Georgia
and may only be grown in parts of a 20-
county area in the southeastern part of the
state. The onions are prized for their
sweetness and lack of heat and are used
raw or cooked.
Langdale Industries held it 31st Annual Forestry Field Day March 12 near Quitman, Ga., to provide real life experience to students interested in the forest industry. High school FFA members came from nine south Georgia counties to test their skills and knowledge in all areas of forest management. First place winners are listed as follows by category and school: Tree/Forest Disorders--Thomas County Central, David Huckeba Carver; Ocular Estimation--Thomas County Central, Nick Robison; Tree Identification--Ware County High, Zeke Smith; Hand Compass Practicum--Charlton County High, Austin Dority; Timber Stand Improvement and/or Thinning--Echols County High, Brooke Smith; Timber Cruising for Board Foot Volume--Echols County Middle, Avery Wood; Land Measurement--Echols County Middle, Matthew Culpepper; Forest Management--Echols County High, Clay Corbett and Cody Corbett; Reforestation--Thomas County Central, Alan Glenn; and Timber Cruising for Cord Volume--Ware County High, Charlton Bennett.

The U.S. Soybean Export Council reminds growers that pesticide treated seeds in grain shipments must be prevented. Many countries that import U.S. soy have very strict rules forbidding the presence of any treated seed in commodity soybean shipments arriving at their ports. To avoid disruption of U.S. soybean exports to overseas markets, farmers must follow U.S. laws governing the proper and legal disposition of treated seeds remaining on their farms after the planting season is over.
Farmers are advised to follow the disposal recommendations that were included in the "Treated Seed Disposal" section of the Pesticide Environmental Stewardship website of the Center for Integrated Pest Management:
The best way to dispose of a small quantity of leftover seed that has been treated with a pesticide is to plant it in fallow or other non-cropped areas of the farm.
Other possible options include: 1. Disposal in an approved municipal landfill (only permitted in some states; plus permits may be required). 2. Use as a fuel source for electrical power plants or cement kilns. 3. High temperature incineration by a waste management facility. 4. Fermentation in an alcohol-producing process at an ethanol plant (but then the ethanol plant's resultant mash or distillers

In order for the referendum to pass, 66 2/3 per cent of those egg producers voting must be in favor of continuing the 52-yearold endeavor for another three years. Funding is through a mandatory assessment of 4.5 cents per 30-dozen case of eggs, which generates some $350,000 in annual revenue. With these funds, the Commission administers a program of promotion, education, and research. The assessment level is not at question in this vote.

AG SEED FOR SALE
If you have questions regarding this category, call 404-651-9081.
Advertisers of agricultural seed must submit a current state laboratory report (not more than 9 months old) for purity, noxious weeds and germination for each seed lot advertised. A seed lot must be uniform and not exceed 400 50-lb. bags. Laboratory reports will be returned upon request. Any ads for agricultural seed submitted for publication without this documentation will not be published. Licensed seed dealers cannot advertise seed in the Market Bulletin. Certain varieties of seed are protected from propagation unless they are grown as a class of certified seed. For example, wheat seed such as Florida 304, Coker 9152, Coker 9835 and soybean seed, such as Prichard and Benning, may not be propagated for sale unless the seed has been grown as a class of certified seed. Propagation of such seed is a violation of the Plant Variety Protection Act and the Federal Seed Act. If you have questions regarding certified seed, call the Market Bulletin office or the Georgia Department of Agriculture Seed Division at (404) 656-5584.

Ga. Cotton Commission
Programs Reaffirmed
The Georgia Cotton Commission, in business since 1965, was reaffirmed in the referendum held recently.
A total of 3,507 ballots were mailed, with 1,020 returned, representing 29% grower participation. Of those returned, 93% voted "yes." This will allow the Commission to continue their programs of research, promotion and education on behalf of cotton producers for another three years.
The Commission looks after growers' concerns by working closely with the National Cotton Council and Southern Cotton Growers to meet the constant challenges presented to the cotton industry. The Commission takes stewardship of the producers' assessment dollars very seriously to fund the most comprehensively relevant research and to facilitate carrying research findings back to all of the producers through meetings, field tours and media.
"For years I was a voting producer, but these last several years serving on the Commission board have enabled me to see up-close how the Commission works in so many ways to address our needs concerning research, legislation and promotion," Commission Chairman Mike Lucas said.
For more information, call the Georgia Cotton Commission at 478-988-4235.

What is the difference between henbit and chickweed? I think I have one of them growing in my flowerbed.
Chickweed (Stellaria media) and henbit (Lamium amplexicaule) are annual weeds that grow and bloom in winter and spring. Henbit has tubular purple flowers and chickweed has white flowers with five deeply-cleft petals. Both henbit and chickweed got their names because they were common in farmyards where chickens would peck at them for their seeds, leaves or for the insects found on them.
Henbit is more often confused with purple deadnettle (Lamium purpureum), another winter annual that has purple flowers. Purple deadnettle has triangular leaves where henbit has rounded leaves with scalloped edges.
Chickweed, henbit and purple deadnettle die when hot weather arrives. To control them, pull them up as soon as possible to keep them from setting seed and sowing a new generation. They are shallow-rooted and easy to pull. Preemergent herbicides can be used to prevent seedlings from sprouting. These are applied before the seeds sprout in the fall. Thoroughly read the label before you apply any pesticide. You may also wish to discuss what control is best for your particular situation with your county Cooperative Extension horticulture agent or a horticulturist at your local garden center.

"This is an important opportunity to hear from the Food and Drug Administration and ask questions before the comment period closes on May 16."
At the meeting, FDA's Deputy Commissioner Michael Taylor and Senior Advisor for Produce Safety Dr. James Gorny presented information about the rule. Dr. Michael Doyle, Director of Food Safety at the University of Georgia, also made remarks.
On Jan. 4, the FDA announced a proposed rule focused on measures that produce farmers and packers should take to prevent the contamination of fresh fruits and vegetables. The agency is collecting comments about the rule before finalizing it.

When Georgia farmers plant their seed, they want to be confident that the seed will grow provided they are given the proper water, nutrients and care. Under the state's seed law, agricultural seed must meet certain minimum requirements before they can be offered for sale.
Through its state seed laboratory in Tifton, the Georgia Department of Agriculture makes complete lab services available for testing seed to Georgia farmers. Seed dealers licensed in Georgia also may utilize the laboratory's services.
The main function of the seed lab is to test seed samples collected by the Department's Plant Industry Division inspectors from retail and wholesale establishments throughout the state. This service ensures that seed offered for sale are correctly labeled and meet the minimum requirements of the state seed law.
Throughout the year, Department inspectors routinely visit farm supply stores, plant nurseries, hardware stores and other outlets where seed are sold to collect samples for testing. In addition, the inspectors check seed packets to ensure they are properly labeled and that the weight stated on the packet is correct.
Most seed sold in Georgia, with the exception of peanuts, soybeans and small grains, are produced out of state. An estimated 90 percent of grass seed planted in Georgia is imported, as are most of the cotton and corn seed.
Inspection at the wholesale level is important for uniform quality of the seed used by farmers and consumers alike to plant their crops, lawns and gardens. These inspections benefit wholesale seed dealers because it allows GDA to find problems before the lots are distributed statewide.
Seed samples are tested for purity to determine the amount of pure seed, other crop seed, weed seed, noxious weed count, and inert matter that are present in the sample. Seed also are tested for total germination to determine the normal germinable seed, as well as hard seed or dormant seed that may be present in the sample.
Categories of seed samples tested include certified, service and official. Certified seed samples are those submitted by certified growers under programs of the Georgia Crop Improvement Association. Service samples may be submitted by farmers for testing, but only seed dealers are charged for tests. Official samples are

collected by inspectors to check for violations of state law. GDA may impose a "stop sale" order on seed that are in gross violation of the law.
The germination of seed can be affected by length of storage time and environmental conditions, such as heat, light and moisture while the seed are in storage. For this reason, the state seed law requires that seed offered for sale bear a tag showing the test date and seed may be marketed for nine months beyond this date. However, an exception is made for small packets of vegetable seed sold at retail, which may state the particular growing year for which they were packaged.
As with other products, consumers are the final inspectors of seed. Consumers should check seed tags for germination and purity information before purchase. Once consumers have purchased seed, they should store them properly until the appropriate planting time.
Farmers who purchase field seed for planting always should insist that the dealer provide a bill of sale or invoice which shows the number of bags purchased, lot number and kind and variety of seed purchased. This record should be retained until the farmer is satisfied that the seed was labeled correctly. If a problem develops, such records help the seed lab trace other samples from the same dealer.
For any seed that fails to conform to the label, a seed arbitration complaint must be filed with the Commissioner of Agriculture before a legal action can be filed. Once filed, the seed seller is notified and given opportunity to respond. The case is then referred to the Georgia Seed Arbitration Council for investigation, informal hearing, findings and recommendations on the complaint.
Recommendations may be accepted or rejected by the parties to the complaint and the documented investigation may be utilized in future legal action.
Any agricultural seed that is advertised must meet the requirements of the Georgia Seed Law. For this reason, any ad for agricultural seed sent to the Farmers and
Consumers Market Bulletin must include a laboratory report that is no more than nine months old from the state seed lab or private laboratory that provided germination results.
Varieties of certain seeds that are developed by private companies and some agricultural experiment stations may be sold only as a class of certified seed. Advertisements for certified seed may be published only if the Georgia Crop Improvement Association recognizes the advertiser as a grower of certified seed. It
