THE MARKET BULLETIN

Advertising Guidelines Bulletin Publishes Every Other Week

All advertisements published in the Market Bulletin must relate to the farming/agricultural industry or be a part thereof; any and all item(s) submitted for sale through the BULLETIN must meet at least one of the following criteria: 1) must be produced by the advertiser on his/her own farming operation, 2) must be made by the advertiser from materials on his/her own farming operation, 3) must be owned and used by the advertiser on his/her own farming operation for a period of at least 90 days prior to offering for sale through the BULLETIN. Businesses, corporations, dealerships or other commercial enterprises are not allowed to place classified advertisements in the MARKET BULLETIN. Commercial is defined as intended for mass market; handling large quantities of product for distribution (i.e., more than normal household or farm quantities); supported by advertisement (I.e., advertisement in publications other than the BULLETIN; listed as "business" in telephone directories or "yellow pages", etc.). Other indicators include, but are not limited to, holding business licenses and holding regulatory licenses/permits/registrations. Georgia residents only may advertise in the Market Bulletin with the following exception: out-of-state residents may advertise only in the Out-of-State Wanted category. The editor has the authority to designate the length of ads and the number of ads that may be placed by a family unit in any issue of the BULLETIN. Currently, only one (1) notice may be placed by any family unit in any issue of the BULLETIN. Family unit refers to all individuals sharing the same residence, address or telephone number. Ads must be received no later than designated deadline in order to appear in the following issue. Ads submitted via our website will be scheduled automatically for the next available issue. Ads will be published only once each time submitted unless the advertiser specifies on the notice that the ad is to be published more than once. Ads may be published for two (2) consecutive issues. A new notice must be submitted if the advertiser wants the advertisement to continue more than two issues. Note: Some ad categories are published infrequently and are published only once per submission. Please check ad category headings for publication frequency prior to submitting notice. There is a 20-word limit for advertisements except as noted under category headings (special categories that are published only monthly, quarterly or bi-annually, have a 30word limit). Advertiser's name, town, phone number or name and complete address must be included within the word limit. The Market Bulletin reserves the right to edit notices. Most advertisers include a telephone number in their ads, but mailing address may be published in lieu of phone number. However, it is important that advertisers provide a phone number when submitting ads in the event Bulletin ad personnel need to contact them concerning their ads. Advertisers who do not want a telephone number printed in their ads should note this fact when submitting the notice to the Bulletin. Each notice submitted for publication must be in writing; ads cannot be taken by telephone. Notices may be submitted by U.S. mail, facsimile transmission, or via the Internet through the Market Bulletin website.

Notices sent via mail or fax must be legible, on a single sheet of paper separate from any other notice, and be accompanied by the name of the category and the name, mailing and street address (es) and telephone number of the person submitting the same. Send ads to:

For this reason, generalized ads (i.e., many horses, varieties to choose from, others, etc.) cannot be accepted. Buyers are urged to request verification of a negative Coggins test before purchasing any equine. Any falsification of Coggins tests can result in fines and/or suspension of advertising privileges in the Market Bulletin. This regulation also applies to equine advertised in the "At Stud" and "Boarding" categories of the quarterly equine editions.

GDA Schedules
Egg Candling Class
Georgia Department of Agriculture (GDA) will conduct an egg candling class in Summerville April 23. The class will instruct participants in proper egg candling procedures in line with GDA standards and provide the information necessary to obtain an egg candling certificate or license. Bradley Brown, GDA food safety agriculture compliance specialist, will be teaching the class.
Candling is the use of a light source to examine the inside of an egg's shell for defects which would render them unsuitable for human consumption. The term candling is used because candles were first used as the light source to observe the inside of eggs.
Those desiring to sell eggs to individuals or at a farmers market must hold an egg candling certificate. Also, anyone planning to sell eggs to a grocery store, bakery or restaurant must have their candling facilities licensed by the GDA's consumer protection division. The license can be obtained by successfully taking and passing a written examination and candling examination, according to information provided by GDA.
The class is open to any Georgia resident and is not age restricted. There is no charge for the class, but registration is required. Classes will be in two hour intervals starting at 8 a.m. Time slots will be filled on a first come first serve basis and distance traveled will be considered. Study materials for the class will be sent by GDA to registrants after registration.
To register or obtain more information, send email to: Deborah.ingram@agr.georgia.gov or call (770) 535-5995.

FFA Members Receive Junior GGIA Certification

Seventeen FFA members from throughout the state earned their Junior Georgia Green Industry Association (GGIA) certification during the 2013 WinterGreen Conference at the Gwinnett Convention Center in Duluth, Ga., in January.
The purpose of the junior certification is to connect students with the Georgia Green Industry linking classroom instruction directly to real life. Additionally, the certification process establishes guidelines for academic achievement and competence while promoting students in the future of the horticulture industry.
The GGIA Junior Certification program consists of a written exam and plant identification practicum. The written test is based on the education objectives of the Georgia Agriculture Education horticulture pathway curriculum and standard practices in the horticulture industry.
Another 24 FFA members passed half of the certification testing and will have the opportunity to complete their certification during the state FFA Convention in April.

Golden Onion 2013 Emcee, Judges Announced

Chefs from across Georgia will face-off on Sunday, April 14, 2013, for the Second Annual Golden Onion professional cooking competition that kicks-off the 36th Annual Vidalia Onion Festival. This cookoff showcases the Vidalia onion, Georgia's most exclusive and renowned agricultural treasure, and also offers a platform for chefs across Georgia to display their skills and creativity.
Sonny Dixon. the anchor of Savannah's WTOC's broadcast, THE News NOW at 4 p.m. plus THE News at Five and THE News at Six, will return as event emcee. Dixon won an Emmy for Best Anchor in the Southeast U.S. in 2011. A longtime member of Toastmasters International, Dixon has won numerous awards for public speaking and communication, including Georgia's Best Anchor/Reporter by the Associated Press in 2005. The Leadership Savannah graduate was elected to five terms in the Georgia House of Representatives before retiring from elected office in 1997.
A panel of five judges will taste and score the competition. Dishes will be judged on the basis of taste (50%), chef's verbal presentation (5%), visual presentation (10%), creativity (15%), overall use of Vidalia onions (15%), and following the recipe submitted during the application process (5%).
Judges of Golden Onion 2013 are: Executive Chef Holly Chute of the Georgia Governor's Mansion. A graduate of the renowned Culinary Institute of America, Chute first arrived at the Governor's Mansion in 1981 as Chef and Foods Manager. Since then, she has helmed the kitchen for six governors:

Chef Hilary White, owner of The Hil: A Restaurant at Serenbe in Chattahoochee Hills, Ga., and first place champion of Golden Onion 2012. White grew up in rural Shelby, Ohio, and is a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York.
She spent much of her early career working with Atlanta's Buckhead Life Restaurant Group and earned particular recognition when, in 2000, she was named the company's first female executive chef at the award-winning 103 West in Buckhead.
Executive Chef Ahmad Nourzad of Affairs to Remember Caterers in Atlanta. Nourzad's love of the kitchen and cooking began at an early age in Tehran, Iran, where he was born. He came to Atlanta by way of Vienna, Austria, and Austin, Texas, where he worked in various positions in the food industry. Nourzad has 25 years of experience in all aspects of a working kitchen.
Bob Stafford is director of the Vidalia Onion Business Council, a role he's held since the mid-1990s. Among Stafford's responsibilities is lobbying on behalf of farmers, working with researchers to improve the annual crop, and working to protect the Vidalia trademark. p.m., via email or US Mail. Refer to the links available on the GDA grants webpage located at www.agr.georgia.gov/ grants.aspx for the grant application, guidelines, and additional information.
Once all applications are submitted to GDA, each one will be carefully reviewed and evaluated by a Review Committee. Compliance and/or noncompliance of previous sub-grantees fulfilling their annual and final reporting requirements of their past grant award agreements is an important evaluation criterion. All GDA-approved projects will then be combined and written as one grant submission to USDA/AMS. Upon approval from USDA, GDA will notify applicants (subgrantees) of their status. No awards to any sub-grantee will be

made until a final grant award is made to GDA (grantor) by USDA. Final approval is expected in early September 2013, but is subject to change.

AG SEED FOR SALE

If you have questions regarding this

category, call 404-651-9081.

Advertisers of agricultural seed must

submit a current state laboratory report (not

more than 9 months old) for purity, noxious

weeds and germination for each seed lot

advertised. A seed lot must be uniform and

not exceed 400 50-lb. bags. Laboratory

reports will be returned upon request. Any

ads for agricultural seed submitted for

publication without this documentation will

not be published. Licensed seed dealers

cannot advertise seed in the Market Bulletin.

Certain varieties of seed are protected from

propagation unless they are grown as a

class of certified seed. For example, wheat

seed such as Florida 304, Coker 9152, Coker

9835 and soybean seed, such as Prichard

and Benning, may not be propagated for sale

unless the seed has been grown as a class

of certified seed. Propagation of such seed

is a violation of the Plant Variety Protection

Act and the Federal Seed Act. If you have

questions regarding certified seed, call the

Market Bulletin office or the Georgia

Department of Agriculture Seed Division at

(404) 656-5584.

A woodpecker is using my gutter as a set of drums. He pecks on it in the morning and has awakened me every day this week. Why is he doing it and how can I discourage him?
In late winter and spring, male woodpeckers will "sound out" their territories. While cardinals and mockingbirds are singing to claim territories and attract mates, the woodpecker, which doesn't have much of a singing voice, goes the percussive route. His drumming will let the available females know he is there and inform other males that this area is already occupied.
This drumming is primarily a springtime behavior and usually only lasts for a few weeks. Once, woodpeckers used dead trees and dead branches. With many of these removed from the landscape, woodpeckers looked to other options and discovered the resonating qualities of gutters, downspouts, chimney caps and metal streetlamp covers.
Please try to be patient. Remember he is just looking for love and that woodpeckers help forests by eating insect pests. However, if you don't think you can outlast the courting season, try to discourage the woodpecker by taping some heavy black plastic on the portion of the gutter he is using. This will make it harder for him to grip onto. It may be effective to hang shiny and or threatening-looking objects that move, such as flash tape, bird control balloons, pie plates or compact discs. Your goal is to get the pecking to occur in a place where it won't disturb you.
As part of a long-range plan, you may want to think twice before cutting down dead trees on your property. These supply woodpeckers with nesting, drumming and food sites. However, if a dead tree or dead limb poses a safety hazard, it should be removed.

Towns County
Farmers' Market Seeks
Local Produce Vendors
As the Towns County Farmers' Market enters its second year, it's extending its outreach to small family gardens, along with the larger farms, to bring locally grown produce to its weekly market.
Many small gardens end up with more produce than they can manage, and this is the place to sell the extra `garden goodies' and be a part of a growing enterprise.
The big sellers last year were early lettuce, tomatoes, corn, and a variety of other vegetables.
Anticipated opening date for the market is June 15, 2013 and it will remain open through the fall; actual hours of operation will be announced by May. There is no fee to participate in the market; the only requirement is that your produce be locally grown.
The Market is operated under the sponsorship of the Towns County Extension Office of the University of Georgia. For more information, call 706-896-2024.

National
Agriculture Week
The Agriculture Council of America reminds all citizens to recognize and celebrate the contribution of agriculture during National Agriculture Week, which is celebrated this year March 17 23. For instance, each farmer feeds an average of 144 people, and agriculture provides not only almost everything we eat and wear, but many of the other products we all use on a daily basis. The Council encourages all Americans to understand how food and fiber products are produced; value the essential role of agriculture in maintaining a strong economy; and appreciate the role agriculture plays in providing safe, abundant, and affordable products.

Consumers today only have to know one thing: peanuts taste good and they're good for you.
Here's a suggestion for peanut use: try them in a stir-fry or on one of your favorite vegetables. Peanut butter makes a great dip for fruits or spread it on bread, bagels, muffins or celery.
And, studies have determined that peanuts and peanut butter contain a wide variety of nutrients that will keep you healthy and fit.
Coincidentally, March is National Nutrition Month - a great time to recognize the nutritional value of peanuts. One serving of peanuts is a good source of protein, Vitamin E, Niacin, Folate, Phosphorus and Magnesium. Peanuts are naturally cholesterol-free and low in saturated fat.
