Just do it. That was Georgia Sen. Valencia Seay's motto on Oct. 5 when she stepped into the show ring for the first time. "I have never, ever, ever been around livestock," Seay said. "This is truly out of my comfort zone." Seay faced her fears as part of the third annual Legislative Livestock Showdown at the Georgia National Fair. She was one of 10 state legislators partnered with 4-H and FFA exhibitors for the showmanship competition, where students gave state leaders a crash course in cattle showing. "I had so much fun doing it and teaching someone about something that is important to me," said Jackson County 4-Her Savannah Page, paired with Sen. Freddie Sims. "We got to work with people that make decisions for our state and I wanted them to know how important the livestock program is to me." The Senate team, which for the first time won the competition, included Chairman John Wilkinson as captain; Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle and Tom Morgan, Crawford County FFA; Bill Heath and Baylee Steed, Carroll County 4-H; Sims and Page; Mike Crane and Mitchell Layfield, Tift County 4-H; and Seay with Peyton Mattox, Oglethorpe County FFA. On the House side, Chairman Tom McCall captained representatives Brooks Colemen and Cody Corbett, Echols County 4-H; Tom Kirby and Makayla Holmes, Gordon County 4-H; Roger Bruce with Amy Rigsby, Veterans FFA; Winfred Dukes and Savannah Lambert, Seminole County FFA; and Margaret Kaiser with Austin Floyd, Hart County FFA. Though the Senate team had the overall top score, Rep. Kirby was named

Georgia Centennial Farm Program honors 26 operations in 2013
Compiled by Dallas Duncan
For more than 20 years, the Georgia Centennial Farm Program has recognized farms that have been in operation for 100 years or more. This year, 26 farms from across the state were recognized at a luncheon on Oct. 4 at the Georgia National Fair.
To qualify for the awards, farms must be in operation with at least 10 acres actively involved in agricultural production. Annual farm income must be at least $1,000 and 10 acres of the original farm purchase must still be in use, said Charlie Miller, Centennial Farm Committee chairman.
The program is a partnership between the Georgia Department of Natural Resources' Historic Preservation Division, Georgia Farm Bureau Federation, Georgia Department of Agriculture, Georgia Forestry Commission and Georgia National Fairgrounds and Agricenter.
The awards are given in three categories: Centennial Heritage Farm, Centennial Farm and Centennial Family Farm. To qualify as a Centennial Farm, a farm must be at least 100 years old and listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Heritage Farm honorees must be listed in the National Register of Historic Places and have been owned continuously by members of the same family for 100 years or more. Family Farms do not have to be registered as historic, but must have been continuously owned by family members for at least 100 years.
Twenty-four of the 26 honorees this year are in the Centennial Family Farm category.

"I think for a farm to be in the same family for 100 years or more is quite an achievement nowadays," Miller said.

GEORGIA GROWN PROFILE: Georgia Farm Bureau
Grassroots organization delivers much more than insurance
By Jenna Saxon, press office
Georgia Farm Bureau is the state's largest general farm organization with independent chapters in 158 counties. GFB is a grassroots organization operated by members in each local community. Every county Farm Bureau office is affiliated with GFB, but operates under its own autonomy and is governed by a local board of directors.
For more than 75 years, GFB's participation in local and state events has provided leadership and direction on issues that helped improve life in rural Georgia. GFB works to enrich the quality of life for many Georgians across the state by ensuring the future prosperity of Georgia's No. 1 economic sector, agriculture.
Though the organization is known for its insurance services, a GFB membership supports programs in local communities to increase agricultural awareness, and programs on the state and national level to promote agriculture and preserve the rural way of life. GFB sponsors and supports youth programs such as 4-H, FFA and high school athletics as its way of giving back to communities across the state.
GFB has a strong relationship with the Department and works as a dedicated partner of Georgia Grown. GFB decided to partner with Georgia Grown because of its support for Georgia's agriculture industry and the farmers in the state who sell locally grown food products. The program "runs parallel" with GFB's Certified Farm Market Pro-

FARMERS AND CONSUMERS MARKET BULLETIN
TAKE 5: Georgia's agricultural commodity
commissions
WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 16, 2013
agriCULTURE
1. What is an agricultural commodity commission?
An agricultural commodity commission is a producer-approved and funded program with the purpose of supporting research, education and promotion of its specific commodity.
2. What are the commodity commissions in Georgia, and who is in charge of
them?
Currently, there are 13 commodity commissions in Georgia. These include a commission for apples, blueberries, cotton, milk, peaches, soybeans, tobacco, pecans, corn, vegetables, equines, beef and one for Georgia Grown. All commissions are governed by a board of five producer members and two ex-officio members, the commissioner of agriculture and the president of Georgia Farm Bureau.
WILSON
3. Are there any new agricultural commodity commissions in the works?
Two of the above mentioned commissions were recently formed. Both the ACC for Beef and the ACC for Georgia Grown were created in 2013.
4. How can industry groups start a commodity commission?
The first step in formation is to have the Georgia General Assembly create a board of producers for a specific commodity, known as "the commission." However, before this commission can begin to develop research, education and promotion materials, a marketing order for that crop must be approved by those who would be affected by this order.
A marketing order gives the commission the authority to assess the growers to help raise funds. After a public hearing is held, a referendum is put in place amongst the affected producers in order for the growers to vote in favor or not in favor of imposing the marketing order. If the order is passed by grower approval, then the commission can begin to implement the research, education and promotion programming for that commodity.
5. What is the Department's role with agricultural commodity commissions?
The Department of Agriculture plays a couple of important roles in the commodity commission. First of all, the commissioner of agriculture holds a seat on each commodity commission as an ex-officio member. The Department of Agriculture also oversees and performs many of the commission's administrative duties.
Nathan Wilson is the commodity promotions manager for the Georgia Department of Agriculture's Marketing Division.
GUEST COLUMN: 2013 Georgia Clean Day
Pesticides in leaking contain-
ers or improperly disposed of can
cause irreparable damage to the
environment by contaminating
water supplies or harming humans
and wildlife. Some of the pesti-
cides used in the past are no longer
legal to use and are now in need of
proper disposal.
To combat this problem, the
WILEY
Georgia Department of Agriculture
created a waste pesticide disposal
program called Georgia Clean Day. Georgia Clean Day
gives Georgia farms, consumers and anyone else an
opportunity to discard old, unusable or cancelled pesti-
cides in an environmentally safe manner at no charge.
The 2013 Georgia Clean Day program was an in-
credible success. Using funds provided by the Envi-
ronmental Protection Agency, the Georgia Department
of Agriculture was able to host five events throughout
the state with the help of local University of Georgia
Cooperative Extension agents.
The 2013 Georgia Clean Day program kicked off on
Jan. 31 at a local agricultural center in Washington, Ga.
The event was designed for individuals within and sur-
rounding Wilkes County, but interest for the event was
so great that the news spread to 38 north Georgia coun-
ties. Nearly 100 people pre-registered for the event and
combined they brought 27,000 pounds of waste pesti-
cide for disposal. Individuals involved with the event
included farmers, pest control operators, landscapers,
nursery and greenhouse operations, UGA research sci-
entists and even the Atlanta Botanical Gardens.
Next, Georgia Clean Day traveled to Pierce County
to an event at Griffin's Warehouse feed and seed store
in Blackshear, Ga. We only had 30 participants preregister for this event, but they stunned us when they filled two 18-wheelers with more than 34,000 pounds of waste pesticide for disposal. Participants ranged from homeowners that wanted to get rid of an old bag of seven dust to a farmer that brought us more than 30 drums of furadan.
Over the course of the next seven months the Georgia Clean Day program hosted events in Colquitt County, Gwinnett County and finally ended in Peach County. The program had an extraordinary effect on the amount of waste pesticide sitting idle in basements and barns throughout the state and was appreciated by all who attended. In total this year's Georgia Clean Day Program had 260 participants from 113 Georgia counties and collected more than 168,000 pounds of waste pesticide.
Since beginning the program in 1995, the Georgia Department of Agriculture and its partners have disposed of over 2 million pounds of waste pesticides that otherwise might end up in the wrong hands or contaminating the environment. Unfortunately, funding for this program was steadily cut starting in 2003. Funding for the program was continuously cut year after year despite its success, until it was completely defunded in 2007.
This year is the first time the department was able to secure grant money for the program since 2007.
If you would like more information about Georgia Clean Day or would like to have a collection event hosted in your area, please contact your local Extension agent or the Georgia Department of Agriculture's pesticide program.
Joshua Wiley is a regulatory program manager for
the Georgia Department of Agriculture pesticide section.
Letter from the Editor
Whew! October, as most of you in agriculture know, is breathtaking. It's breathtaking because of the beautiful fall foliage beginning to appear in our gardens, our backyards and the Georgia mountains. It's breathtaking because some mornings we walk out of our houses to head to work or to the barn and the shock of cool fall air quite literally takes our breath away.
But it's also breathtaking because there's so much going on in agriculture, sometimes it's hard to catch a breath!
The month kicked off with the Georgia National Fair in Perry, Ga. Tens of thousands of visitors came through the gates to show livestock, visit rabbits and cavies, see cooking demonstrations and shop for Georgia Grown products. The annual 10-day event featured rides that soared to breathtaking heights, entertainment (Did anyone ride a sheep? I wish I was 6 years old again, because I would so be on that!) and food galore. It was so hard to walk away from funnel cakes, the gourmet caramel apples and fried everything. I did acquiesce and enjoy maple bacon gelato and my yearly stop at the VFW kiosk for a delicious ribeye sandwich.
And this week, the fun doesn't stop. Another fantastic Sunbelt Agricultural Exposition kicked off in Moultrie on Oct. 15 and this year's event promises to be better than ever. Livestock handling demonstrations, the antique tractor parade, field demos ... just like the fair, it's enough to take your breath away!
In addition to the two events mentioned above, this month is home to food festivals, harvest celebrations, agritourism events and more. But somehow, everyone in agriculture manages to, as the popular signs say, "Keep Calm and Carry On," despite the breathtaking flurry of October events.
I wanted to take a moment and thank everyone who spends days (and, in the case of this month, weeks!) at these events, sharing their agribusiness, products and, in the end, Georgia agriculture with so many consumers. These are long days and there are a lot of them, and I just have to say how much I appreciate everyone working doubly and triply hard promoting our amazing industry without question.
The folks who man these booths and do these demonstrations probably start out with welcoming smiles at 9 a.m., and still when you walk by at 4 p.m., they're saying hello and inviting you to come sit down and chat for a while. It's such a great atmosphere, and it's so encouraging to see those in the food and fiber industries have this attitude toward promoting and educating about agriculture.
So many people who are so passionate about what they do and how they do it that they work from sunup to sundown to share their industry ... I gotta say, it's kind of a breathtaking sight.

gram, President Zippy Duvall said. "Since 1985, GFB has offered the Certified Farm Market
Program, which directs consumers to bona fide producers of locally grown products and agritourism activities," said Brandon Ashley, GFB commodities specialist. "Supporting Georgia Grown is another way in which GFB serves our members and helps direct Georgians to locations to buy Georgia products."
The markets are located across the state, he added. "What we want to accomplish is to make people aware of local products they can buy directly from the farmer rather than buying products that come from out of state or another country," Duvall said. Another way GFB promotes Georgia Grown commodities
is a partnership between its Women's Leadership Committee and Farm Bureau's Ag in the Classroom Program, which will visit schools this year to teach students about healthy eating and the advantages of purchasing Georgia Grown products.
GFB also partners with the Department to produce a monthly cooking segment, called "Meals from the Field," featuring Georgia Grown products.
"These cooking segments highlight a different in-season commodity each month and spotlight members of the Georgia Grown and GFB's Certified Farm Market Program," Ashley said. "'Meals from the Field' segments air on the Georgia Farm Monitor, which is seen all over the state and nationally on RFD-TV. These cooking segments are also posted to YouTube and featured in our monthly e-newsletter."

FARMERS AND CONSUMERS MARKET BULLETIN
SHOW: Senate brings home trophy for first time

Grand Champion showman. Kirby had previous livestock showing experience, but said he appreciated the refresher course.
"It's kind of like riding a bike," he said. "It seems like maybe a little more work than it used to be when I was younger, but I wanted to give back and get the opportunity to do it."
Holmes said watching Kirby, she felt like her parents do watching her in the show ring.
Emily Griffiths, director of programs and industry relations for Ohio Beef Council and Cattlemen's Association, was judge for the Showdown.
"These legislators have a chance to interact with the very future of the beef and agricultural industries. That beef that goes on the dinner table ... can only be made possible because we have producers committed to raising that safe, wholesome, high-quality beef that we not only feed our own families, but that we know our consumers can trust," Griffiths said, addressing the crowd.
Cagle said passion for the beef industry was evident when working with Morgan.
"[Morgan] was a great coach and he's a remarkable young man," Cagle said. "He was very patient with me and taught me an awful lot in a very short period of time, all the way from how to wash the steer and how to blow it dry, how to comb it and have it prepared and ready to show it."
Seay said despite the challenge of properly positioning the heifer, she was excited to finally fulfill her motto.
"I finally did it. I finally came full circle to facing my fears, and it was all because of Peyton," Seay said. "Peyton was not only knowledgeable, but he was calming. ... I felt so at ease doing something that's totally out of my comfort zone."
Mattox said working with Seay was a great experience. "Telling people what all I've learned from my ag teachers, my dad and my mom about showing, showing me responsibility, and it was really nice getting to pass that on to somebody who didn't know anything about it," Mattox said. "[Seay] said she'd never fooled with animals before, and she's fooled with a 700-pound animal as the first one. ... I think she did a great job." Each legislator was presented with a framed photo of themselves and their partners as well as books on Georgia's FFA and 4-H histories. Each exhibitor was also presented with a $100 check courtesy of the Georgia National Fair. Griffiths said it was great to see the legislators "giving back."
"Having a chance to interact with these young people is so important," Griffiths said. "Hopefully these legislators have understood this bond and level of trust that I think happens between these cattle and young people. I ask of you, as legislators, that you don't let them down when it comes to trust in you, to make sure they have a future that people can continue to believe in and support agriculture."

THERE'S MAGIC IN THE FAIR
Here are just a few scenes from the 24th annual Georgia National Fair, held Oct. 3 through 13 in Perry, Ga. Visit www.facebook.com/GeorgiaMarketBulletin to view more.
Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Gary W. Black, along with Department Marketing Division Director Jack Spruill (left), Economist Kelli Williams and Gene Sutherland, cut the ribbon on the Georgia Grown Building. This was the first year the building was open at the fair.
Fairgoers shopped `til they dropped at the Georgia Grown Pavilion store inside the Georgia Grown Building. Items for sale represented dozens of Georgia Grown member farms and agribusinesses.
After perusing the Georgia Grown Building, fair visitors delighted in a multitude of attractions. Paddleboats on the lake, a gigantic Ferris wheel and more drew crowds of children, adults and teens alike.
Be it deep-fried cauliflower, funnel cakes, Wisconsin cheese or smoothies, the fair had fodder to please every palate that worked up an appetite on the rides. Here, a customer waits patiently on a pork chop sandwich courtesy of the Houston County Young Farmers' food stand.
