Autumn agritourism destinations abound in Georgia

There's something magical about Oct. 1. "Everybody wants to be outside again," said Jeff Manley, president of Georgia Agritourism Association. "They've been hiding from the dog days of August and September, and they want to go back out and take a hayride, build a fire and eat a s'more." He estimates there are more than 150 fall farm destinations in Georgia, including corn mazes, pumpkin patches and pick-your-own crops. Most consumers are three generations removed from the family farm, but innately crave the farm connection, Manley said. "There's just so much of that basic stuff that I guess the general public isn't introduced to or exposed to anymore, which is kind of why we started all this," said Andy Kinsey of Kinsey Family Farm in Gainesville, Ga. "That's one of our big things, is getting people out here, seeing what farm life is sort of like." The Kinseys started with livestock in the 1980s, but diversified in the early 2000s with Christmas trees and later, pumpkins. Initially, they grew all of their own pumpkins, but due to demand they now bring in American-grown pumpkins from northern states like Michigan.

"The difference between one grown down here and one grown up north is the thickness of [the rind]," Kinsey said. "Up north it'll be an inch, two inches thick. Down here it's more half-an-inch to an inch thick and the pumpkins won't last quite as long, but they do OK."
The Kinseys pride themselves on being able to offer a variety of American pumpkins to their customers mahogany Princess pumpkins; pink pumpkins; "brushed nickel" green Jarrahdales; long, cylindrical pumpkins; Knuckleheads covered in witches' warts; round pumpkins; giant Gladiators bred for carving; and tiny pumpkins sized for little hands.
"This year, one of the guys I work with up in Michigan, he has a new one where the warts are all different colors. They're not orange, but the pumpkin is orange," Kinsey said. "There's Oneto-Many pumpkins that look like bloodshot eyes. They're a great big white pumpkin with orange, blood-shot veins running through them."
Even though there's a variety to pick from, Kinsey was able to pick his top three best-sellers.
"Hands down, Gladiator carving pumpkin. You sell five to one over everything else," he said. "Our No. 2 is the Jarrahdale. ... That's an edible pumpkin. They look really good, but they last for-

Food deserts, insecurity cause of health and hunger issues

It's spooky to be hungry a feeling many Georgians know well. According to the US Department of Agriculture, 50 million Americans, including 17 million children, are food insecure. "They live in a risk of hunger," said Dustin Lard, regional fresh produce sourcer for Georgia Food Bank Association. "Their parents are not 100 percent sure where their next meal is coming from." And the need is greater in Georgia. Whereas one in six Americans and one in five children are food insecure nationally, the state numbers are one in five people and one in four children, Lard said. In addition to food insecurity, USDA identified 23 million Americans who live in "food deserts" areas without easy access to grocery stores and hence, fresh produce. "The higher the hunger area, the higher the rate of diabetes and heart disease is," Lard said. "When you're food insecure, you're not really thinking about the quality of food you're purchasing,

you're trying to get the bulk for the money. You're not thinking about fresh fruit and vegetables."
In recent years, a number of organizations created programs to address these issues across Georgia.
Augusta Locally Grown started a veggie truck farmers market in the Harrisburg neighborhood of Augusta, Ga., which takes place on Tuesday evenings.
"That is intentionally in a low-income area so as to create access to locally grown food in the Harrisburg area. It is the only farmers market in Augusta that takes EBT food stamps, which I'm really proud of," said Kim Hines, executive director of Augusta Locally Grown. "We also have a grant from Wholesome Wave Georgia. We are doubling the value of food stamps for some food purchased at the veggie truck farmers market."
Lard's position is a new one for Georgia and part of a nationwide initiative of addressing the issue of fresh produce in food banks.

Amy Stankus began her career as an architect, but her passion for chocolate soon led her down a completely different path. Nine years ago, Stankus made the decision to quit her architectural job and pursue what she was passionate about: chocolate.
"I've been in love with chocolate since I first tasted it," said Stankus, owner of Chocolate South.
One year ago, Stankus decided to open her own chocolate shop. Thus, Chocolate South was born. The chocolatier began to experi-

ment and try to find the right combination for the perfect chocolate. "The more and more I worked with chocolate, I was hooked,"
Stankus said. Chocolate South, an artisan chocolate boutique, focuses on South-
ern ideas and tries to incorporate locally grown Georgia products in its recipes. Located in west Midtown in Atlanta, Chocolate South is open Monday through Saturday.
Chocolate South's Georgia Grown membership is unlike most others. Its membership was a gift given by the Georgia Department of Agriculture after winning the Flavor of Georgia Contest in March. Their Georgia Peach Tea Bonbons took the overall grand prize at the competition, which awarded them with a Georgia Grown gold-level membership.
"It was a great honor to receive a Georgia Grown membership. We are very proud to be Georgia Grown," Stankus said.
Chocolate South's unique bonbons are created with a tea that is derived from Georgia's own peaches from Lane South Orchards, another Georgia Grown member.

It was a glorious day to be outside: the sky was blue, the weather warm. The leaves crunched under my boots as I walked through the cattle pasture at Kinsey Family Farm in Gainesville, Ga. As Andy Kinsey pointed out the two different coats on his Belted Galloways, I remembered just how much good it does a person to spend a day out in the field.
Though I originally came to the Kinseys' residence to talk about their pumpkin patch, the interview quickly turned into a farm tour, with a walk through the nursery and a visit to the 2-week-old baby goats. And being followed around by the donkey ... and the miniature horse ... and the pony ... all of which seemed very intent on having my camera bag for lunch.
After leaving the Kinseys' a little later than intended which is what happens when you get me in a pasture with cows, I've learned I headed into Watkinsville to visit Washington Farms. A brief walk into the corn maze also included a drive around their pumpkin field, during which I learned that some pumpkins start out green and turn orange, but then others start out yellow and even more stay orange the whole way through.
When I planned out this day of interviews, I was most excited about having a reason to wear my Ariats. But by the time I arrived at my final destination feeling refreshed and smelling a little like a farm, I was more excited about getting to see and share these producers' stories with the Market Bulletin readership. I spent the rest of the evening thinking of the way I wanted to phrase sentences. When my boyfriend got off work close to midnight, I made him stay awake long enough to ask his opinion on which opening quotes he'd find most interesting.
I'm sure I could have done all of these interviews over the phone and requested courtesy photos to run in the paper, as I have to do with most stories for time's sake. But taking the opportunity to visit these places reminded me what it really means to be an agriculture reporter. Just hearing a story does not have the same effect as getting to experience it alongside them, and learning the little nuances that make their place unique the yard sale the Washingtons were setting up was to raise money for their eldest daughter's mission trips in Uganda; the bearded dragon in the Sharon Elementary science lab eats Georgia-grown vegetables from the school garden; the Kinsey family lived all over the world before settling down on the farm in the 1980s.
We all live busy lives. Whether you're up at 3 a.m. milking Holsteins, fighting Atlanta traffic in a suit and tie or getting home after midnight from your late-night shift at a restaurant, there's little time to relax. But I encourage you to take the opportunity when it knocks to spend a day, or even just a few hours, out in the field yourself. Put that business proposal aside when you get home and take your kids to the corn maze. Ask your farm manager to take on an extra responsibility or two so your family can watch their cousins compete in the goat show at the fair.
Seize the day. Spend it outside with the leaves crunching under your boots. It sounds crazy, but it's totally worth it.

"Previously, the seven food banks in Georgia were getting donations mainly from retailers," Lard said. "We would get the culls, the No. 2 product. Nothing wrong with it; it was wholesome, still good to eat, just not the prettiest."
Now, food banks are exploring additional options to get fresh produce they're going straight to the source.
"It's my job to visit the growers, show them the need for the food bank and the need for the fresh vegetables to be donated, and basically solicit donations from them," Lard said.
The food bank initiative focuses on seven main items: potatoes, apples, onions, cabbage, carrots, sweet potatoes and oranges. Lard said these are the most common, healthy and do not require refrigeration. Though they are refrigerated from pick up to drop off to prolong shelf life, consumers don't have to immediately store them cold for food safety reasons. The donations don't have to be No. 1 products; they can be the harder-to-market No. 2 varieties.
The food banks are distribution points, collecting from donors and then distributing food to pantries or organizations, which then deliver it to those in need, Lard said.
"A lot of farmers want to help locally, so our policy and our procedure ... is to offer to local food banks first," Lard said. "Say for instance ... the local food bank already had a truckload of onions and they didn't have room or need another. That would be up for anyone in Georgia to take advantage of that product."

In Fulton County, Cooperative Extension was charged with helping alleviate the problem of food deserts in the area, said April Majors, senior public affairs officer for Fulton County. In 2011, Extension agents identified four neighborhoods to serve with the Fulton Fresh Mobile Farmers Market. From June to August that year, 900 people were provided with fresh produce. Since then, it's grown to two trucks serving 5,000 people in 16 communities. A grant from the Arthur Blank Family Foundation allows the program to purchase vegetables from the Atlanta State Farmers Market and distribute them for free, with one caveat: participants must learn something before they take home produce.
"In addition to providing fresh produce, Cooperative Extension provides nutrition education. For the people who come to the truck, they must go through a nutrition education course prior to receiving fresh vegetables. The course covers certain topics such as diabetes, eating healthy and also provides a cooking demonstration with vegetables that are on the truck," Majors said.
For example, a demonstration might include cooking vegetables with olive oil instead of fatback or butter, she said.
"We've gotten great feedback. It's helped some of them with their health issues ... since they've incorporated fresh vegetables. They become more of an advocate about having fresh vegetables," Majors said. "They're getting exposed to foods that they would not think about trying were it not for Fulton Fresh."

Gigi's apple crisp

Ingredients: 6 large Granny Smith or Rome apples, peeled, cored and thinly sliced cup water Juice of one lemon

2 cups quick cooking oats 1 cup all-purpose flour 2 cups packed brown sugar 1 tablespoon cinnamon 2.5 sticks butter, melted

Instructions: 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. 2. Combine apples, water and lemon juice in a lightly greased 8x8-inch baking dish. 3. In a bowl, combine oatmeal, flour, brown sugar and cinnamon. Pour in the butter and stir to make a crumbly mixture. 4. Spread mixture evenly over apples and bake for 40 to 45 minutes, or until the topping is crisp and browned.

FALL: Agritourism offers pumpkins, corn mazes and more

And the third, he said, is the Pokemon, which is white with orange veins and popular with kids.
The Kinseys see a lot of kids during the fall, hosting field trips on the weekdays and families on the weekends. So does John Washington and the crew of Washington Farms in Watkinsville, Ga., a destination that includes pumpkins, pig races, familyfriendly activities and two corn mazes.
Washington Farms began as a pick-yourown strawberry farm, but after a hard freeze destroyed 60 percent of the crop, the family expanded into pumpkins, and each year added something new.
To enter the larger of the Washington Farms corn mazes, visitors slip down a 24foot slide. As they go through the maze, they're given different brain teasers or "cornundrums" to solve.
Washington said the biggest "cornundrum" of creating a corn maze is knowing how to plant it and grow it so the final product looks nice.

"We've got two bridges in our maze. They will probably be at least 10 feet high, so as you go through the maze, you'll come to a bridge and then you go stand on top of the bridge, which is 16 feet long. You can look out over the corn maze and see other folks going through the pass," he said.
The other challenge is picking a pattern. Washington said there are a number of different ways farmers draw their mazes. Some use tillers, some spray it, some use GPS.
Unusual maze designs are one way to create a farm identity, the main way Manley advises producers to market agritourism destinations. Washington adds that it's important to make the farm fun, and remember that agritourism isn't just about farming it's about creating a relationship with people, too.
"We're creating a family tradition that will last into perpetuity, that their children will continue the experience and also the education," Manley said. "It's one thing to go and pick a pumpkin, but it's another to go and ask how it grows and where it came from."

International expo to feature Georgia garden in 2014

By Dallas Duncan Editor's Note: This is the second in a series exploring Georgia agriculture's international trade and partnership opportunities. Next year, millions of international visitors will stroll through a Georgia garden without ever stepping foot in the state. That's because the garden is a focal point of the 2014 Qingdao International Horticultural Exposition in China, held next April through October. Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Gary W. Black visited the expo site during a trade mission in September. "This thing's enormous. It's like an Olympic-type atmosphere, but it's all about the world exposition of horticulture," Black said. The nearly 600-acre expo site includes the Georgia Garden of Future Past, designed by University of Georgia graduate students and Douglas Pardue, assistant professor in the UGA College of Environment and Design.

The garden is a juxtaposition of the Southern garden tradition and a place of play.
Reclaimed wood walls showcase Georgia's forestry industry. A wall of recycled pipes pays homage to the state's commitment to sustainability. Media walls demonstrate Georgia's "emergence as a media powerhouse" while displaying film and photography of Georgia history and in-state gardens.
"If you ask international students what's something that reflects Georgia, half the time you get `Gone with the Wind.' Not only does the media wall allow you to run things like `Gone with the Wind,' it enables us to show events like football, TNT, Savannah's ghost stories all these things that are Georgia," Pardue said. "The visitor in this garden is sort of compressed through this experience and then they emerge from the green wall and they're in the more formal, classical sort of Georgia Southern garden, which reflects in some aspects a refuge, a way out of the modern cacophony."
When visitors emerge onto the lawn, they will get to do something most Georgians grow up doing in their yards and gardens: play. Each month, new elements of play, such as footballs and croquet, will be added to the lawn for visitors to enjoy.
The invitation to participate in the expo grew from a trade relationship Qingdao has with the Georgia Department of Economic Development.
"They're expecting 22 million people to come through the expo and to visit the gardens," said Pat Wilson, the department's chief operating officer. "Seeing what Georgia has to offer our commodities, pecans, peanuts, all the things that really set us apart as a state is only going to help us grow a brand and create a name for our state."
Pardue said the garden's name captures his students' interpretation of Georgia garden traditions.
"Even now in contemporary times, Georgia's held onto its traditions and adapted the garden to meet those traditions as opposed to completely abandoning them," he said. "The traditional Georgia garden was also sort of a place of meditation and refuge as well as food. There's a purpose to the garden, it wasn't just aesthetic. The way we interpreted experimentation, function, play and formality was to contrast new and old."
