DIVERSIFIED FARMING, ITS
BENEFITS AND POS- _

SIBILITIES
\ |
A prominent and well known
agricultural expert of Athens,

Ga., and a manager of the Geor-
gia State College .Agricultural

comparison the results of cotton
farming and diversified farming
in order that the exact profit de-
rived from these methods of farm-
ing might be ascertained and com-
pared. ao Se
- Two farms, one a hundred acre
cotton farm, the other a hundred
acre diversified, were operated,

kind and quality of soil.
- Hach farm was scientifically
and separately managed, and a
set of books were kept by each,
recording the expense of. opera-
tinecin very. detail... c
Reeords of the year 1926 are
as follows: On his Cotton Farm)
he kept four mules; planted 45

few hogs. His cotton yielded 349
pounds lint per acre which was
sold on the local market. Some
feedstuff was sold from this farm
which was added to the income.
After summing up the total in-
come to this farm from the sale
of cotton mainly and deducting

net- profit of only $400.00.

On his Diversified Farm were
kept 10 cows from which the sale
of milk netted $803.29: Fifteen.
acres were planted to cotton
which was sold for $666.73. Nine-
teen acres were in alfalfa, the sale.
of hay from this being $1,088.41.
The sale of hay from a mixture.
of grain and vetch returned
$398.94. Deducting the total eur-
rent years expense from the
gross income left a profit of $2,-
142:00,. = eo

This shows $1,742.00 more
profit for the Diversified Farm
than for the Cotton Farm.

. The number of aeres of each
farm is the same; four mules are
kept/on each farm; the man labor
being about the same. Two men
were on duty all the time on the

labor was used in harvesting the
hay and cotton. eee a
