THE STATE OF GEORGIA
EXECUTIVE ORDER
BY THE GOVERNOR:
FLAGS ON STATE CAPITOL BUILDING AND IN FULTON COUNTY ORDERED LOWERED TO HALF-STAFF
WHEREAS: Mr. Bernard "Bernie" Marcus, renowned philanthropist and entrepreneur, passed away on November 4, 2024; and
WHEREAS: Mr. Marcus co-founded The Home Depot, the world's largest home improvement retailer, and opened its first two stores in Atlanta, Georgia in 1979; and
WHEREAS:
With his desire to give back to the community, Mr. Marcus established The Marcus Foundation and generously supported causes throughout the State, including envisioning and funding the Georgia Aquarium, one of the world's largest aquariums, that he dedicated to the people of Georgia; and
WHEREAS:
Bernie Marcus was an icon of the business world who created jobs and opportunities for generations of The Home Depot employees. His considerable philanthropy will also reverberate through history, touching lives for the better; and
WHEREAS: It is fitting and proper to remember and honor Mr. Bernie Marcus' life and generosity by lowering flags on the State Capitol Building and in Fulton County to half-staff.
NOW, THEREFORE, IN HONOR OF AND AS A MARK OF RESPECT FOR THE MEMORY OF MR. BERNARD "BERNIE" MARCUS, PURSUANT TO THE AUTHORITY VESTED IN ME AS GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF GEORGIA, IT IS HEREBY
ORDERED: That the flag of the United States and the flag of the State of Georgia be flown at half-staff on the State Capitol Building and in Fulton County on Thursday, November 7, 2024, the day of Mr. Marcus' interment.
