OCMULGEE MOUNDS NATIONAL HISTORICAL PARK, MACON/VISIT MACON

1. SOAK UP THE SCENERY ON A LAKE BLUE RIDGE GETAWAY
Take a lake trip to Blue Ridge and you're signing up for more than just a getaway--it's truly an immersive experience. Surrounded by the beauty of the mountains and the mesmerizing clarity of the lake, you'll find no shortage of water activities. And when you're done making waves, hit the town for good eats or stop by an orchard and indulge in a cold glass of hard apple cider.
A good trip starts with great lodging. Take in the gorgeous scenery of North Georgia when you book a stay with Escape to Blue Ridge cabin rental. Whether you're going for a luxurious or laid-back feel, there's a host of cabins available to suit your fancy, including dog-friendly and waterfront options, and those with game rooms and other family amenities--all set amid the lush greenery the area is known for. Plus, the area is a treasure trove of natural wonders if you're looking to connect with nature. There are 106,000 acres of national forest and more than 100 miles of rivers and streams to explore.
Head to Lake Blue Ridge's crystal-clear waters for some aquatic fun. Naturally, the 3,290-acre lake offers an array of dynamic activities: Bask in nature at the abundant campsites, plunge into public swimming spots or navigate the waters with help from the full-service marina. Take a short excursion to soak up gorgeous views on the Toccoa River Swinging Bridge after a quick, family-friendly hike on the Benton MacKaye Trail 45 minutes from Blue Ridge. The trek is brief but the payoff is big. The 270-foot suspension bridge dances and bounces with each step, as it's suspended over the gently rolling Toccoa River. On the other side, you're rewarded with the sight of a stunning waterfall.
After adventures on the lake, or maybe even before heading out, drop by Rum Cake Lady--a Cuban cafe--for award-winning rum cake, including their original golden bundt cake, red velvet bundt cake and Cuba libre rum cake. Fill up before dessert with authentic food, including the Cuban food bowl with chicken, yellow rice and black beans, while hanging out on the outdoor patio.
On your way out of town, make the short drive to Mercier Orchards' market for butters, jams and honey, or indulge your sweet tooth with their fried pies, apple-cider doughnut and cinnamon-apple bread. Take it a step further with a trip to the orchard's candy kitchen, where you'll find handmade peanut-butter cups and more. Pop by their Hard Cider & Winery to treat yourself to a flight of cider, sampling options like the dry Cold Day in Hops or the tart Adele's Choice.

Explore Lake Blue Ridge's crystal waters by boat, stand-up paddleboard or via good old-fashioned swimming. The lake offers a full-service marina and 65 miles of shoreline along the Chattahoochee National Forest. Campsites, picnic areas and several boat ramps are available.

TAKE A TOUR Head to Conyers for Filmed in the South's brand-new location featuring souvenirs, an interactive museum and a content-creation studio with real props from shows like The Originals. Fun fact: It's designed and built by The Vampire Diaries universe's set designer!

2. EXPERIENCE GEORGIA FILM FAVORITES IN SENOIA, COVINGTON & CONYERS
Any fan of movies and television has seen the Georgia-peach logo at the end of the credits for projects that receive a film-tax incentive for shooting in Georgia. And while studio complexes have risen from Savannah to Athens, filming on location in Senoia, Covington and Conyers has been going on for decades--well before the incentives.
Covington, where classics like Remember the Titans and the most recent Netflix series Sweet Magnolias came alive, is a solid place to start your experiential adventure. Grab lunch at Mystic Grill, which was partly inspired by The Vampire Diaries. The popular CW series about blood-sucking night-stalkers was filmed in town and inspired the restaurant's owners to bring the on-screen story to life--in edible form. From there, take the Mystic Falls Tour, which leads junkets through more local areas featured on the show, including the clocktower, town square, the Gilbert family home and Malivore's portal. Then hop on the Main Street Trolleys & Tours, whose Covington movie tour includes more than 40 filming locations, like where scenes from The Dukes of Hazzard were filmed. Behind-the-scenes details are shared by their tour guides.
Rest your head at Twelve Oaks Bed and Breakfast, a historical home that was recommended as a model home for the movie Gone With the Wind. Less than a 10-minute walk away, find yourself at City Pharmacy for brunch or dinner, particularly if bacon-glazed salmon sounds enticing.
For your next movie-and-TV stop, take a quick 10-mile day trip to Conyers. An easy way to get your bearings is the Filmed in the South guided tour, where you can see places like Olde Town Conyers, which you'll recognize from TV series like The Originals and In The Heat of The Night. As part of the tour, you can make a reservation at Celtic Tavern, aka The Originals' "Gillespie's Pub," for on-set dining before or following your tour.
If you've got time for a bit more sightseeing, the town of Senoia was not only the site of the state's first stage complex, the Raleigh Riverwood; the town itself was the practical shooting location for The Walking Dead. For memorabilia such as signed posters and officially licensed products, visit The Woodbury Shoppe, whose owners include The Walking Dead's executive producer, graphic-novel creator and former studio co-owner. There's also Georgia Tour Company, which offers the Southern Fried Films Tour for insights into classic Southern films. Senoia has a long history of filming--from Fried Green Tomatoes to The Fighting Temptations.
When hunger comes back into focus, visit Nic & Norman's, owned by The Walking Dead actor Norman Readus and TWD's producer and special-effects mastermind Greg Nicotero. It boasts brisket nachos, fried-chicken pot pies and an array of gourmet burgers. And if you're ready for a break after all that "Y'allywood" action, take a trip to France without a passport. Lisa's Crperie, a cafe where sweet and savory crepes are the main fare, offers a variety of specialty coffees, teas, wines, beer and shakes for the happiest ending ever.

3. GIRLS TRIP TO ATHENS
Grab your besties and gear up for a getaway that's all about catching up on old memories and making a few new ones. You can take an action-packed escape to Athens with people who really get you. Once you've settled into the chic and centrally located Hotel Indigo, make your way to the happiest of vacation hours at one of the city's renowned craft breweries. Share some laughs as the sun sets over Creature Comforts' expansive patio and you sip their tangy, mimosa-esque Athena Paradiso sour, or head to Terrapin Beer Co.'s backyard for live music and a friendly cornhole competition accompanied by a pint of their crisp Los Bravos Mexican-style lager. Both are stops on the Athens Beer Trail, made up of seven local breweries where you can collect stamps. Visit them all to receive a keepsake at the Historic Athens Welcome Center. Now that you've sufficiently shifted into getaway mode, pull up a chair at one of the restaurants credited with putting Athens on the foodie map. At James Beard winner and "Top Chef Masters" alum Hugh Acheson's Five and Ten, savor sophisticated Southern dishes like cast-iron cornbread and half-roast chicken. Walk that goodness off along the 5 miles of garden trails at the State Botanical Garden of Georgia where you can really get the heart pumping or pick a more leisurely route--luckily, for those who might be distracted while catching up on old times, there's plenty of signage to point you back the way you came. Pop into a few of the independent shops downtown, including home-goods stores, artists' studios and vintage-clothing hotspots. Agora Vintage, Cheeky Peach, Heery's Clothes Closet, Fringe Boutique and Epiphany are a handful of stylish options you'll have to make room in the suitcase for. For something a little different, there's Lumberjaxe, where you can see which of you will surprise the others with the most accurate axe-throwing skills, and the Bear Hug Honey Company, whose infused honeys, body butters and candles make sweet souvenirs of your weekend. After freshening up at your hotel, set out for Last Resort Grill, an eclectic former music venue, to savor items like cornbread-crusted trout and maple-smoked tofu before you really hit the town. Start by dancing to the electrifying energy of live music at the historic 40 Watt Club, where high-profile acts like John Mayer, Snoop Dogg, R.E.M. and Pylon have graced the stage. Then walk over to a hub for established and emerging musicians, the Georgia Theatre, where a rooftop bar offers stellar live performances and views of Athens. If you're not ready to call it a night, this college town offers plenty of lively places to have a cocktail and grab some latenight bites, including The Old Pal and The Root.

4. WAG YOUR WAY THROUGH SAVANNAH
Wrapped in Southern charm, Savannah is a haven for pet lovers with a diversity of dog-friendly offerings that delight both humans and their furry companions.
At the luxurious Perry Lane Hotel, their friendly welcome extends to your pupcakes. Book a room at the pet-friendly hotel, which welcomes dogs that weigh up to 50 pounds and service animals of all sizes for a fee. Surprise your fluffy buddy with treats made by Oliver Bentleys, a comfy pet bed made just for them and a bandana with the Perry Lane logo, all of which are included in the pet fee.
Who said your four-legged friend isn't a history buff, too? Oliver Bentleys Historic Dog Walk Tour is just over a mile in length, and it is specifically designed for people visiting Savannah with their dogs. Explore the city's 22 iconic squares, beginning with Oglethorpe Square, and relish the gorgeous greenscapes that paint the downtown area. Walk historic Bull Street and savor the history behind its famous monuments, all while learning about the many canine-friendly establishments along the way.
Dogs are always welcome on the expansive patio at Collins Quarter at Forsyth, a charming location styled after historic Collins Street in Melbourne, Australia, that boasts an overlook of the iconic Forsyth fountain. Bring your fur baby and indulge in the eclectic cafe experience, savoring the pairing of specialty coffee with innovative brunch cuisine while the barista at the walkup coffee window spoils them with a free treat. Revel in the delightful fusion of Southern hospitality and Australian chic, all within a vibrant, welcoming atmosphere that effortlessly combines the charm of Savannah with the cosmopolitan culture of Melbourne.
Located in Savannah's vibrant Starland District, Starland Yard Food Truck Park is a pet-friendly spot that offers a variety of rotating food trucks and a fully stocked bar. Grab a slice from Vittoria Pizzeria, kick back and people watch while your best friend rests at your feet. Or enjoy a Mercier Grumpy Granny Cider, crafted in North Georgia, from Yard Bar and play a round of cornhole while your dog cheers you on.
Finish your pup-cation less than an hour outside the city at Skidaway Island State Park, home to one of the most popular dog-friendly hikes in Savannah. As one of Georgia's barrier islands, the park is dotted with live oaks dressed with Spanish moss, and its picturesque trails are perfect for wandering with your leashed pup. They wind their way through a forest and over a salt marsh. Don't be surprised if you spot a variety of maritime-forest-dwellers, including deer, fiddler crabs, raccoons, egrets and migrating birds.

5. BRUSH UP ON HISTORY IN MACON
For an immersive journey through history--whether you're interested in music, art, culture, architecture, stories of the Black and Indigenous experience in Georgia, and more--there's no place like Macon. The charming town has an abundance of activities, landmarks and opportunities to see the paths that laid the foundations for life as we know it today.
Begin your historic journey at the Ocmulgee Mounds National Historical Park, which may soon become Georgia's newest national park. The national park would be co-managed by the Muscogee (Creek) Nation of Oklahoma, who were forced off the land in the first half of the 19th century. Occupied for more than 12,000 years by up to six Native American cultures, the land is central to the foundation and prehistoric origin of Macon. Before visiting the magnificent mounds, check the calendar for recurring programming at the site--including annual cultural events like the Ocmulgee Indigenous Celebration held in September, and the Lantern Light Tour (every year during Macon's Cherry Blossom Festival), where you'll walk from the Visitor Center to the Great Temple Mound with a lantern and hear interpretive talks at various points along the paths.
Continue down history's path with a visit to sites relating to Black history, stopping first at the Tubman African American Museum. Named in honor of the courageous Harriet Tubman, the museum celebrates African American art, history and culture. Tour the museum for a nine-panel mural by Georgia artist Wilfred Stroud depicting the origins of men and women from Africa to America, an exhibit on African American inventors, and one on Macon's musical heritage--from Little Richard to James Brown and the Allman Brothers Band. Next, head to Mercer Music at Capricorn's sound studios and museum, considered one of the birthplaces of Southern rock. Here you can listen to songs from the Capricorn Records catalog (including tunes from Otis Redding, Percy Sledge and others). Plus, talented musicians still perform, rehearse and record at Capricorn today.
Fans of architectural history will love the distinguished Hay House, an expansive, four-story Italian Renaissance Revival marvel where construction ended in 1859. Take in opulent design details, like soaring 35-foot ceilings and a magnificent collection of porcelains, stained-glass windows, paintings and more.
Feeling famished from all that history? Dine at Rookery, which opened during Capricorn Records' heyday and serves burgers inspired by the Allman Brothers, Ray Charles, Little Richard and more. If you're in the mood for something a little more specifically Southern and indulgent, try H & H Soul Food. The Macon institution is history itself, having been founded in 1959 and famous for classics like fried chicken, collard greens and mac 'n' cheese, all of which wash down perfectly with an Arnold Palmer. You can get a literal taste of history in one of Georgia's most celebrated cities.
Find your home away from home at another Macon gem--the 1842 Inn, a B&B that exemplifies Southern hospitality. You'll enjoy nightly hors d'oeuvres and mint juleps in the parlor, an elegant courtyard and gardens, an expansive front porch and sweet in-room amenities like fresh flowers.

6. TAKE ON AUGUSTA'S AQUATIC ADVENTURES
When the weather gets a little toasty, you can always find a deeper level of cool on Augusta's waters.
If you like to keep it above the surface, you'll love taking the Serene 18 Paddle Trail challenge, which invites you to paddle the Augusta Canal, the Savannah River and Clarks Hill Lake. If you can collect all five stamps on a souvenir passport along the trail, you'll get a free T-shirt. For a guided float through areas of Columbia County, head to Stallings Island, where Cole Watkins Tours lead you to the best spots via kayak to see wild deer, otters and friendly donkeys, the latter of which you can stop and pet or take a selfie with. Also available for a tour is the county's most popular local waterway, Betty's Branch, which offers morning and sunset times.
Anglers will relish the chance to catch bass at Mistletoe State Park, which also offers year-round programs including nature walks and concerts. Discovery Center at Enterprise Mill is an essential trip through Augusta's industrial history, with stories and exhibits explaining the building of the Augusta Canal and its use of hydroelectricity. Enjoy acoustic performances on the water as you tool through the Augusta Canal National Heritage Area on a Moonlight Music Cruise. Or spend a day scanning the shoreline to spot the bountiful wildlife and hear about historical buildings dating back to the Civil War. Or if you'd rather stay more grounded, take a stroll down the Fifth Street Pedestrian Bridge, with its unimpeded views of the Savannah River, and plenty of ways to keep the kids busy--from mazes and spin wheels to music. Farther down, between Sixth and 10th streets, is the Augusta Riverwalk where, along with the natural wonders of the Japanese Gardens, you'll find weekly programming such as the Sunday Candlelight Jazz Series between May and August, and Saturday markets at the Eighth Street Plaza and Bulkhead.
Since you'll eventually need something sturdier than water to keep going, make a reservation for Cork & Flame, a hybrid restaurant that mixes fine dining with tapasstyle, shareable plates and a wine market for movable feasts. Secure a table in advance for morning bites at Brunch House Augusta for its cozy diner-style setup and amazing shrimp and grits, among other tasty day-starters.
For a one-of-a-kind hotel stay that matches the grandeur of Augusta, stay at The Partridge Inn. This meticulously maintained historical-landmark building happens to be the closest hotel to Augusta National Golf Club and is beloved for its fabulous rooftop bar. Or you can always head downtown for an old fashioned cocktail at Edgar's Above Broad. Here you'll appreciate an elevated experience with a grassy, green-andwhite-checkerboard-floored rooftop lounge, and a stellar selection of breakfast and lunch menu items.

7. SAMPLE LOCAL FLAVORS IN ELLIJAY
Nothing says down-home fun like a spirited festival celebrating local culture and community. This is why the Georgia Apple Festival in Ellijay has been a highlight of the "apple capital" of Georgia for more than 50 years. Held on the second and third full weekends in October, the folksy gathering honors the apple harvest. Here you can browse roughly 300 vendors selling food, art and handcrafted items, or pause to check out the on-site craft demonstrations. Enjoy family-friendly events held throughout the four-day event, including the popular Annual Apple Classic Auto Show, the Apple Festival 5K Road Race and the Apple Festival Parade, which starts and ends in downtown Ellijay. Of course, local orchards are in on the charming festival fun. At the family-owned R & A Orchards, not only can you pick apples from the tree during the u-pick apple season (SeptemberOctober), you can also grab a pair of clippers and a cup to create a custom bouquet in the flower fields with a vibrant selection of zinnias, sunflowers and wildflowers. After dropping by the u-pick apple orchards at Red Apple Barn, hop on over to the pumpkin patches, where you'll find the one that awaits your carved masterpiece, for more fall delights. While apples get all the Ellijay glory, there's no denying that the area's wineries are starting to garner some serious attention. Several serve up spectacular countryside views, live music and other ways to relax along with their tasting flights. Sip vidal blancs in Cartecay Vineyards' 1890s Tasting Barn, dry apple wines in the relaxed environs of Buckley Vineyards and rose and sprinkling wines in the rooftop garden bar at Roo Mountain Vineyards. Nestled in 265 acres of vibrant scenery, kickstart your mountain fun with a stay at The Lodge at Walnut Grove. With its spacious living rooms, an in-house library, dual kitchens, a wraparound porch and serene stone patios, its stylish presentation harmonizes with stunning valley views. Enjoy an awesome view of Ellijay when you head to the trendy downtown restaurant, The Roof. Treat yourself to Southern favorites like fried green tomatoes, boiled peanuts and bologna sliders on the spacious outdoor patio.

8. ROAM SOLO IN THE GOLDEN ISLES
It is entirely possible to enjoy an island escape without a traveling companion, especially when the destination is one of the Golden Isles of Georgia. The collection of barrier islands-- along with the charming port city of Brunswick along the state's east coast--was recently ranked No. 1 among U.S. islands in Travel + Leisure's 2023 World's Best Awards survey. Make leisurely, pedestrian-friendly St. Simons Island your base. The 18-square-mile stretch is ideal for a solo stroll or bike trip. You can rent a beach cruiser at several businesses, some of which are happy to deliver your bike to you. Hotel Simone--the island's newest, allsuite luxury boutique hotel--offers casual, coastal splendor in the form of nautical design, a gorgeous rooftop pool and lounge, plus easy access and discounted pricing at The King and Prince Beach & Golf Resort nearby. After check-in, take a 1-mile southbound walk to the Pier Village district, where you'll find Neptune Park and the St. Simons Lighthouse Museum, as well as the fishing pier. Browse nearby stores like the Savannah Bee Company for sweet honey treats or stop into the Live Oak Shop for beachy gifts and souvenirs. On your way back, pass the hotel and continue for just over half a mile to the World War II Home Front Museum, which is full of artifacts and history detailing the unique role St. Simons, and hundreds of thousands of Georgians, played in the military effort. Once you've worked up an appetite, visit Southern Soul Barbeque, one of Georgia's best barbecue restaurants, serving exceptional wings, ribs, brisket, pulled-pork sandwiches and more. If you'd rather ride after your meal, check the schedule for trolley tours that meet under the big oak tree along the pier. No St. Simons trip is complete without spending time on one of the island's beautiful beaches. East Beach, Gould's Inlet, Massengale Park and the Coast Guard Station Beach are all amazing shores worth visiting. For natural wonders of a different kind, plan a day trip to Jekyll Island. Here you'll see everything from interactive exhibits at Mosaic, Jekyll Island Museum and the Georgia Sea Turtle Center to Driftwood Beach, where weathered driftwood trees are fantastically shaped by decades of natural erosion. There are also bicycles, tricycles, surreys, dual trikes and other pedal-assist vehicles available for temporary use at Jekyll Island Bike Barn. Be sure to make a pit stop at the Jekyll Market gourmet grocery store in Beach Village for an unparalleled selection of snacks, wine, meats and food from four on-site restaurants. Take a quick trip to the mainland, Brunswick, where you can see the Romanesque design of Old City Hall, historical elements of The Ritz Theatre and the natural beauty of Mary Ross Waterfront Park. Pick Your Perfect
Spring
SPRINGTIME IN GEORGIA IS AN ANNUAL REMINDER OF THE MANY AMAZING REASONS FOR VISITORS AND RESIDENTS ALIKE TO GET OUTSIDE AND INTO THE BEAUTIFUL NATURAL PLAYGROUND OF THE PEACH STATE.
There's no shortage of blooming flora this time of year, which means Georgia's garden wonderlands make for a blooming-great getaway. At the State Botanical Garden of Georgia in Athens, a rainbow of daffodils, roses, snapdragons and cherry blossoms kick off the season, and heirloom roses, fruit crops and native species give you a peek at the state's agricultural history. There's also plenty of opportunity for outdoor amazement in North Georgia at Gibbs Gardens in Ball Ground, when the early March to mid-April Daffodils Colorfest blankets the landscape in a frothy, vibrant yellow. Take an unhurried stroll through Atlanta Botanical Garden's gorgeously manicured paths and sculptural plant installations. Sit beside the pond to absorb the peaceful garden sounds and fresh aromas at Savannah Botanical Gardens, or participate in a Lunch & Learn at the intimate Columbus Botanical Garden. Not far away is the expansive scenery of Callaway Resort & Gardens in Pine Mountain, whose sprawling landscape--covered with thousands of gem-colored

azaleas--offers tennis, golf, ziplining, the Cecil B. Day Butterfly Center and the resort's luxurious lodge and spa.
Georgia's coastline isn't the only area where you can find vast vistas of the state's many beautiful bodies of water. Hike, picnic or camp out along the maritime forest of the Intracoastal Waterway at Skidaway Island State Park in Savannah, or find a great place to spend a night outdoors with the scenic campgrounds, access to the vast Lake Allatoona and miles of nature trails at Red Top Mountain State Park in Acworth. You can also find a serene place to lay out for a night or two after earning your sleep with an invigorating day of hiking and backpacking at Vogel State Park near Helen--the 13-mile Coosa Backcountry Trail is a top accomplishment--or F.D. Roosevelt State Park in Pine Mountain, where the 23-mile Pine Mountain Trail passes waterfalls, travels over creeks and moves through a winding forest. If you're less into the rough-it sort of outdoors adventure and more into fanciful forest relaxation, go for a night of luxury at Timberline Glamping Co. near

Georgia's tallest waterfall, Amicalola Falls in Dawsonville. If someone accuses you of cheating because your heated or air-conditioned tent has electrical outlets, a coffee maker and a minifridge, just invite them in for a visit. Together you can trek a portion of the Appalachian Trail's southern end, just 8.5 miles from the waterfall, on Springer Mountain.
It'd be quite a shame to spend time in this gorgeous agricultural state without taking advantage of every chance available to pick and enjoy your own veggies, fruit and other produce--and berries are spring's finest. Head to The Market at Rutland Farms in Tifton to pick them (and gobble up their strawberry ice cream) and do some bass fishing. During picking hours at Southern Belle Farm in McDonough, fill your own bucket with some of their sweet berries, ride the cow train and meet the farm creatures in Bell's Barnyard. Or spend time at Fort Valley's Lane Southern Orchards to pick more gorgeous strawberries (and even some peaches as early as mid-May!).

INTERNATIONAL CHERRY BLOSSOM FESTIVAL, MACON/RALPH DANIEL

IDEAL DESTINATION
Springtime in Augusta is pure Georgia magic, with the return of sunnier skies and warming temperatures. There's no better time to experience Georgia's "garden city" than when it's shaded in newly sprouted leaves and bedazzled in blooms. Go bass fishing at Mistletoe State Park, home to Clarks Hill Lake--one of the largest lakes in the Southeast. Then take a pedaling tour with Bike Bike Baby to see the downtown district's public art, churches, cemeteries and other important spots related to African American culture-- including, of course, the soulful areas of town that inspired Augusta's own James Brown. For an evening of amazing entertainment, buy tickets to one of many concerts or festivals hosted at the Jessye Norman Amphitheater, which sits alongside the Savannah River. And give your perfect spring evening a proper Augustan nightcap with an old fashioned and panoramic views of the city's streetscape at legendary rooftop bars Edgar's Above Broad or Six South Rooftop Bar at Partridge Inn.
DON'T-MISS EVENTS
Mid- to late March is your chance to hear live music, eat delicious food and see Macon's beautiful Yoshino cherrytree blossoms during the International Cherry Blossom Festival.
Atlanta's beloved Piedmont Park has been hosting the Dogwood Festival in April for more than 80 years, where local arts and crafts are sold, musicians share their songs and festival delicacies are sampled (like fried pickles, mushrooms and okra).
The Savannah St. Patrick's Day Parade is America's third-largest procession honoring "the apostle of Ireland," where thousands of green-attired revelers celebrate the holiday and toast with green beer while watching marching bands, bagpipe players and floats.

St. Marys
Perhaps best known as the gateway city to pristine Cumberland Island, the coastal town of St. Marys draws visitors with a host of natural attractions. Three rivers--the St. Marys, the Crooked and the North--and the Cumberland Sound come together here, making it a popular destination for fishing and boating. Birdwatchers flock here, too, as they travel Georgia's Colonial Coast Birding Trail, along which more than 300 species have been spotted. New gardens and walking paths enhance the downtown, home to a charming bookstore (Once Upon a Bookseller), a vibrant art gallery (Olde Towne Gallery) and a handful of antiques dealers. Continue on foot to the nearby St. Marys History Walk and discover local history--from Timucua settlements in the 1500s to the shipbuilding industry of the 19th and 20th centuries--from a series of interpretive panels set along the shaded trail. Discover more about the town's maritime legacy at the St. Marys Submarine Museum, where visitors can get a feel for life aboard a sub, or walk with a guide from Molly's Old South Tours to explore St. Marys' legacy of lawlessness from centuries past (tours are also available on Cumberland Island).
Eat
The friendly Riverside Cafe features Greek classics like moussaka (eggplant and ground beef), piled-high sammies, and seafood platters boasting jumbo shrimp and fried cod.
Sleep
Built in 1916, the stately Riverview Hotel shines as a beacon for Southern hospitality. Settle in on the veranda or head downstairs to Seagle's Saloon for a cocktail with the locals.
Do
Book a ride on the Cumberland Island Ferry, which departs from St. Marys for day trips on Georgia's largest barrier island. The 45-minute ride is itself a great way to experience the area's natural wonders (keep an eye out for the wild horses).

Ellijay
Ellijay, the state's apple capital, draws thousands of visitors each fall, but the appeal of this small northwest Georgia mountain town extends well beyond harvest season. Families can look forward to year-round fun at a number of popular outdoor destinations. Ellijay's name purportedly derives from a Cherokee word meaning "many waters," and the town is a jumping-off point for trips to nearby waterfalls and outings on area rivers and Carters Lake. Mountain biking is big here, too; a popular pick is Bear Creek Trail, which winds past the 100-foot-tall Gennett poplar, reputedly Georgia's second-largest tree. There are now nearly 10 wineries within 30 minutes of Ellijay, among them Cartecay and Engelheim vineyards. And for those who come for the apples, pick your own or grab a bag (and a cider doughnut) at one of a number of nearby apple houses; a favorite is R & A Orchards. End the day back in town at The Roof, a rooftop bar with panoramic views of downtown Ellijay and the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains.
Eat
The Shack serves a selection of bubble teas, from peachcoconut to cotton candy, and an Asian fusion menu featuring poke and noodle bowls. For excellent coffee and pastries, visit Ellijay Coffeehouse, nestled in a restored 1940s building.
Sleep
Glamping, anyone? Bed down in a geodesic dome or Airstream trailer at Elatse'Yi, a nature-loving destination. The cabin set is well served by North Georgia Glamping.
Do
Visit the new Ellijay River location of Cartecay Bike Shop, a cyclist's dream. Then head to woodsy Mulberry Gap, an adventure base camp boasting singletrack, gravel and road routes. Just 4 miles from downtown Ellijay is the new Roo Mountain Vineyards, where you can sip fragrant reds and hard ciders after a long day at play.

LaGrange
Located near Georgia's western border, LaGrange combines small-town charm with a full slate of offerings, from water-based recreation to buzzy craft-beer destinations. First a bit of history: LaGrange was named after the estate of Revolutionary War hero Marquis de Lafayette (of Hamilton fame), who traveled through the area and said it reminded him of the grounds surrounding his chateau near Paris. These days, visitors in search of great estates can tour the Italianate villa Hills & Dales, completed in 1916, and its 35 acres of rolling grounds and formal gardens. Another way to experience the town's inspiring environs is a visit to West Point Lake, a popular spot for boating or fishing. Back in town, take a self-guided walking tour of historic houses of worship and architecturally significant homes. Cap the day at Wild Leap Brew Co. for innovative beers and a cool vibe, or pay a visit to Beacon Brewing Company, operating in a former textile mill. And be sure to check the schedule of Sweetland Amphitheatre; the popular downtown venue regularly hosts big-name acts from Emmylou Harris to Fantasia.
Eat
Housed in a former church, Taste of Lemon is a must-visit for its "meat and two sides" specials and fresh cobblers.
Sleep
Families head to Great Wolf Lodge for a one-stop vacation. Over-the-top amenities include log-cabin themed suites, a rock-climbing wall, a ropes course and an indoor water park the size of a city block.
Do
LaGrange Art Museum, situated in the former county jail built in 1892, celebrates Southern artists with rotating exhibits. The nearby statue of General Lafayette is a highlight of any downtown stroll.

STEPHEN C. FOSTER STATE PARK, FARGO/RENA JOHNSON

STEPHEN C. FOSTER STATE PARK
You hear the swamp in the grunts of pig frogs and gurgling hoots of barred owls, but you don't see it. A flashlight might reveal the red eyes of a gator, but you're safe on land, at a clearing where the main road ends and the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge takes over. The tiny town of Fargo in South Georgia is home to one of only two GoldTier International Dark Sky parks on the East Coast, where visitors can stay overnight at an on-site cottage or campsite. Pack a folding chair and gaze into space for breathtaking views of the Milky Way, streaking meteors, and the showstealing clutter of a thousand stars. When the sun rises, enjoy hiking, biking and fishing, and be sure to explore the rest of the park with a guided boat tour around the swamp.
SERENBE
A stroll around the community of Serenbe reveals freeroaming sheep, miles of wooded footpaths, blueberry bushes planted along sidewalks for easy foraging, and a farm that fuels local restaurants and community supported agriculture. The wellness community, located on the outskirts of Atlanta, is designed to connect humans with nature, and visitors can embrace that intention with horseback trail rides, yoga classes and visits to the weekly farmers market. Rent a house, stay in the gorgeous Inn at Serenbe, recharge at the Portal--an intimate wellness retreat center--or attend events like wine dinners in the garden.
OYSTER FINE BAMBOO FLY RODS
Coming home with an heirloom-quality fly rod is just a perk of Bill Oyster's rod-making classes, which the celebrated craftsman holds 22 weeks a year at his Blue Ridge studio in the North Georgia mountains. The real reward is six days of laser-focused, leave-it-all-behind handiwork, starting with splitting and shaping raw bamboo into a hexagonal rod. The work is so engrossing, says Oyster, students often need to be coaxed to stop for lunch. Sessions sell out more than a year ahead (though you can join a waitlist and hope for a cancellation) and conveniently end on Saturday, leaving Sunday open for losing oneself on a nearby trout stream.

Atop a hill dotted with chestnut trees, the noon sun streams through stained glass, bathing the Gothic archways of the abbey church in twilight blue. Twenty-eight Trappist monks call this place home, but day-trippers are welcome to picnic by the duck pond, browse the museum and gift shop (the brothers make a heavenly biscotti), sign up for a retreat or simply observe a moment of contemplation in the sanctuary. An on-site retreat center allows for longer stays centered on prayer and personal growth.

PET-FRIENDLY ACTIVITY
You might engage in a quail hunt of sorts, searching downtown Thomasville for 18 bronze statues of the game bird; it's a nod to the pastime for which this part of the state has been known for more than a century. Take your favorite furry best friend along for the stroll, as you meander from statue to statue, including Liberty the Labrador.

THE PLAINS DEPOT, PLAINS/CALEB JONES

HISTORIC PLAINS Be charmed by Plains' downtown, where you can sample Southern cuisine and shop at locally owned boutiques. This tiny Georgia town dates back to the 19th century--it blossomed when the railroad arrived in 1885.

PLAINS/CALEB JONES

FROM LEFT: PLAINS HIGH SCHOOL, PLAINS/CALEB JONES; JIMMY CARTER BOYHOOD FARM, PLAINS/CALEB JONES

Born in the small Georgia town of Plains, humble peanut farmer Jimmy Carter rose quickly through the local and national political ranks. He was elected to serve as a state senator and then Georgia's governor before becoming the nation's 39th president--the first and only from the Peach State.
But Carter's commitment to service didn't stop when he left the Oval Office. He remained active in several humanitarian causes, winning a Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for his work with the Atlanta-based nonprofit The Carter Center.
Experience his life and legacy with this itinerary through Jimmy Carter's Georgia.

Plains
Start your journey at the Plains Visitor Information Center, which displays mementos and photos of President Carter, including a cardboard cutout of the president-- perfect for selfies. Then head downtown to visit the Jimmy Carter National Historical Park, a trio of historical buildings where Carter spent his childhood. Carter's alma mater, Plains High School, serves as the park's visitors center and museum. Tour the former school, with period-appropriate rooms restored to how they looked when Carter walked the halls, and exhibits about his life in Plains. Then take an Insta-worthy picture with his Oval Office desk--it's an exact replica!-- and see Carter's original artwork (painting was a favorite hobby of the artistic former president) along with one of his three Grammy Awards.

From there, visit the second stop in the historical park--The Plains Depot. The town's train station until 1951, the depot served as the headquarters for Carter's 1976 presidential run. The small, white clapboard building now houses memorabilia like buttons and signs from that era.
For a quick bite to eat, walk half a block to Buffalo Cafe along the same streets Carter and his family strolled over the years as longtime Plains residents. Located in a former bank building, the casual eatery features a menu of hearty burgers and sandwiches as well as Southern favorites like fried green tomatoes. If you're craving something sweet, buy a pack of peanut brittle or peanut soft serve at Plain Peanuts to snack on while browsing the local antique shops. You may just spot vintage Carter campaign buttons and other collectibles. Or meander

through the downtown butterfly garden, one of the stops on the Rosalynn Carter Butterfly Trail, the former First Lady's project to provide habitats for pollinators.
Next hop on Highway 280 for a few short minutes to tour the third spot in the Jimmy Carter National Historic Park, The Boyhood Farm. You'll find tomatoes, corn and peanuts still growing there today. Carter's boyhood home is preserved as it was in 1937, and the farm is still home to all manner of animals, including charming goats, clucking chickens and the buzz of honeybees. You can even take a self-guided audio tour narrated by Carter himself. Book a room at the Plains Historic Inn to immerse yourself fully in the small-town, presidential experience. The hotel's seven suites are each furnished from a specific decade between 1920 and 1980, the eras of Carter's illustrious political career.
Finally, drive by the Carters' modest ranch home on Woodland Drive-- the only home he and Rosalynn ever owned--where you can imagine him digging its fly-fishing pond and relaxing under a magnolia tree transported from the White House lawn. Say farewell on your way

out of town by snapping a picture of the smiling peanut statue, a whimsical art installation of the town's favorite legume adorned with Carter's signature grin.
Americus
Known for its charming historical downtown, this small city just east of Plains is dotted with shops and restaurants. It's also the operational headquarters of Habitat for Humanity, one of President Carter's favorite charities.
Power up for your day exploring this slice of southwest Georgia with a fruity blueberry muffin or decadent mini coffee cake from Sweet Georgia Bakery & Cafe. They serve java--including coffee by the pound--from Cafe Campesino Coffee Roastery, a 100% Fair Trade, organic roastery based in Americus, too. Ask for the Carter Butterfly Trail Roast, named for the former First Lady's passion project.
Then drive east to nearby Georgia Veterans State Park on Lake Blackshear to climb aboard the Presidential Flyer SAM Shortline

Railroad, a two-hour journey between the region's most notable Carter landmarks. Soak in the scenery in the comfort of vintage, climate-controlled rail cars with large viewing windows. The ride includes stops in Plains as well as the site of his boyhood home.
After the trip, venture back to Americus for a shopping excursion, starting at The Kinnebrew Co. Founded in 1947, this landmark shop is loved by Southern ladies and gentlemen for its custom clothing and deep Americus ties, including to Georgia Southwestern State University (an alma mater of Carter's). Spend the afternoon strolling the city's antique shops and boutiques-- many of them stocked with Carterera memorabilia--and then grab dinner at Rosemary & Thyme, an elegant restaurant housed inside the majestic Windsor Hotel. A favorite of President Carter, the five-story, Victorian-era hotel boasts luxurious guest rooms, including the Carter Presidential Suite. Book a room to freshen up in after dinner before catching a show at the Rylander Theatre, a 1920s-era venue that hosts live music, theater and other performing arts. It even has an auditorium that bears Carter's name.

RYLANDER THEATRE, AMERICUS/CALEB JONES

106 #EXPLOREGEORGIA

FROM LEFT: ATLANTA HISTORY CENTER, ATLANTA/CALEB JONES; JIMMY CARTER PRESIDENTIAL LIBRARY AND MUSEUM, ATLANTA/CALEB JONES

Atlanta
While President Carter was born and raised in southwest Georgia, he spent much of his political and humanitarian careers in the state's capital city. Learn more about his post-presidential legacy at the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and Museum, an award-winning museum situated on 35 acres of landscaped grounds with permanent exhibits dedicated to Carter's life and career. Step into a life-sized replica of the Oval Office to watch a "Day in the Life of the President" video projected on 13-foot-tall screens. Then browse a collection of unique artifacts, like Carter's original Nobel Peace Prize, presidential papers, a medieval crown from Hungary and one-of-a-kind gifts for heads of state. As you leave, you'll see his namesake nonprofit The Carter Center just next door.
For lunch, motor down the street to Manuel's Tavern, a legendary pub

where Carter announced his run for governor in 1970 and a gathering spot for political enthusiasts, journalists, actors and other notable Atlantans. The straightforward menu includes starters like wings and nachos, plus sandwiches, soups and salads. Try the half-pound beef McCloskey cheeseburger, named for a long-time employee, and sample a beer from a local brewery.
Then head a few miles downtown to the Georgia State Capitol, the iconic gold-domed building where Carter worked as a state senator and later governor. The grounds feature a statue of President Carter, while the inside galleries include a portrait of Carter and state artifacts like historical flags and artwork.
From there, drive north to Buckhead for a public tour of the Governor's Mansion, where Carter lived during his tenure. Then drive down the street to the Atlanta History Center, which has rotating and permanent

exhibits that chronicle the city's history from Indigenous inhabitants to contemporary times--including Carter's presidency and the 1996 Olympic games. The museum has an on-site coffee shop and cafe, plus a manicured campus and historical buildings, including the Renaissance revival-style Swan House, featured prominently in movies like The Hunger Games. Fun fact: In 1973, Carter founded Georgia's first state film commission, which kicked off the state's growing film industry. See page 10 for other filmed-in-Georgia locations.
End your road trip with a rousing Atlanta Braves game at Truist Park. A lifelong baseball fan, Carter--as governor--congratulated Hank Aaron with a handshake when he broke the record for the most home runs. He also threw the ceremonial first pitch during the World Series in 1995, when the Braves won the title.

Pasaquan
BUENA VISTA In 1957, visionary folk artist Eddie Owens Martin (known as St. EOM) began a 30-year transformation of his late mother's house into a 7-acre art installation. Today, visitors are wowed by the Technicolor mash-up of Native American and African-influenced sculptures, murals, totems and painted structures, surrounded by more than 900 feet of brilliantly decorated masonry walls. Thoughtfully restored and maintained by Columbus State University, the site welcomes guests on weekends.

Providence Canyon State Park
LUMPKIN Known as Georgia's "Little Grand Canyon," this geological wonder formed as a result of poor farming practices in the 1800s. Over the years, water runoff created chasms, ravines and cliffs with stunning multicolored sediment. Streams flow along the canyon floors, and 9.5 miles of scenic hiking trails are adorned with magnolias, trumpet creepers and wildflowers. Pause and take in the views from the overlooks; there's no shortage of breathtaking photo ops.

East Palisades Trail Bamboo Forest
ATLANTA
Follow the East Palisades Trail through a peaceful oasis just a few miles northwest of the city's core. The Chattahoochee River vistas along the approximately 4-mile loop are beautiful, but the most surprising feature is the enchanting bamboo grove. Listen as the towering, 30-foot stalks knock together in the breeze, creating a natural, soothing melody to accompany your exploration of this unexpected dreamscape.

Cumberland Island
It doesn't get much more remote than this barrier island celebrated for its wild horses, undeveloped beaches and Dungeness Ruins (the remains of a once stately mansion built by Thomas Carnegie, brother of steel tycoon Andrew Carnegie). Travel the island's unpaved roads via bicycle or guided walking tour, and spend hours combing the beaches for shells. For an overnight stay, book a room at the luxe Greyfield Inn or camp out beneath the moss-draped branches of Southern live oaks.
