ABOUT This document provides a comprehensive summary of the characteristics of dentists practicing in Georgia in 2025. It includes key demographic information such as age and gender, and data on employment characteristics, including hours worked and geographic distribution. The data visualizations, summaries, and conclusions are based on the data provided by the Georgia Board of Dentistry.
These figures aim to highlight disparities in dentist availability, which can affect access to dental care services.
OVERVIEW In 2025, Georgia had 5,704 actively practicing dentists, equating to a rate of 51.0 per 100,000 residents, based on the 2024 Census population estimate of 11,180,878.1 In 2025, 21 counties in Georgia had no practicing dentists, affecting a combined population of approximately 164,375 residents.
At the time this report was prepared, the American Dental Association (ADA)2 had not released a national average of dentists per 100,000 people for 2025. However, the most recent data available from the ADA, published in 2023, reported 202,304 practicing dentists in the United States, equating to a ratio of 60.4 dentists per 100,000 people.

Distribution of Dentists by Age Group

AGE GROUP DISTRIBUTION According to the 2025 Dentist Census data, 4,626 dentists reported their age. The average age of actively practicing licensed dentists in Georgia is 46. The largest age group within the workforce is 35 to 49, accounting for 42.0%, while the smallest group, those aged 60-64, represents 6.6% of the workforce.

GENDER DISTRIBUTION As we continue to analyze findings from the 2025 Dentists Census, data from the 5,143 actively practicing dentists in Georgia who reported their gender shows that 36.6% identified as female and 63.4% as male. This represents a significant gender gap, with male dentists outnumbering female dentists by 24.1 percentage points.

WORK HOURS ANALYSIS In addition to demographic characteristics, the 2025 Dentist Census also provides insight into the distribution of weekly work hours among actively practicing dentists. Understanding the number of hours dentists work each week offers valuable context for assessing workforce capacity and availability. The Dentists Census data categorizes work hours into two groups: less than 30 hours per week and 30 or more hours per week.

A closer look at the distribution of work hours by gender among the 5,137 dentists who reported both gender and work hours show that 80.3% of those working 30 hours or more are male, while 77.7% are female. Although a smaller portion of both genders work less than 30 hours per week, males still slightly outnumber females in this category as well.

SPECIALTY DISTRIBUTION In the 2025 Dentist Census, 5,142 dentists reported a specialty4, covering a range of fields including Dental Public Health, Endodontics, General Dentistry, Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, Pediatric Dentistry, Periodontics, and Prosthodontics.
In 2025, most dentists (75.6%) were practicing General Dentistry, followed by Orthodontics & Dentofacial Orthopedics as the next most common specialty5 at 6.3%.

Counties with no Dentists
2025 A closer look at the 2025 Dentist Census reveals which counties in Georgia had no actively practicing dentists that year. The accompanying map offers a visual overview of these areas. Of Georgia's 159 counties, 21 have no practicing dentists in 2025, representing approximately 13.2% of the state's total counties. By comparison, the 2021 Dentist Census showed 22 counties without any practicing dentists, or about 13.8% of the state's total counties. This reflects a slight decrease of 0.6 percentage points in counties without dental access over the four-year period. The availability of dentists by county is based on addresses reported by the dentists, which may be either a practice address or another publicly reported address.

Overall, metro cities such as Atlanta, Augusta, Savannah, and Macon have large numbers of dentists, whereas rural areas such as Clay, Quitman, and Randolph are underserved.

1. Age Group 34 and under: o The percentage of dentists aged 34 and under increased from 14.7% in 2021 to 20.0% in 2025 a 36.1% rise.
2. Age Group 35-49 o Dentists aged 35 to 49 grew from 37.6% to 42.0%.
3. Age groups 50-64 o The percentage of dentists aged 50 to 64 remained relatively unchanged, moving slightly from 31.3% to 31.5%.
4. Age group 65+ o Dentists aged 65 and older dropped significantly from 16.5% to 6.6%, a 60% decrease.
