Georgie's Drive Thru Cartersville
Hello! I'm Georgie, the Georgia Grown mascot. I travel the state of Georgia promoting our #1 industry, agriculture! Last summer, my family and I traveled up to Louisville, Kentucky, and stopped in Cartersville to pay our respects to one of Ginny's heroes. Born in Virginia, Charlotte Diggs Moon moved to Cartersville after the Civil War to help open the Cartersville Female Academy. Two years later, while a member of Cartersville Baptist Church, she announced her calling to the mission field.
She left her job as a schoolteacher and principal at the academy that fall to serve in China. While there, she survived famines and several conflicts, including the Boxer Rebellion. To help ease the suffering of the people she ministered to, she shared her resources, including her food, at the cost of her own health. Other missionaries discovered her health condition was quickly deteriorating and arranged transportation for her to go home to get medical attention. She died during the trip on Christmas Eve in 1912. In 1918, the Southern Baptist Women's Missionary Union's Christmas fundraising effort for international missions was renamed the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering in her memory.

Christmas Tree Farm

Directions: Color the Christmas tree farm. Pick the best tree for Georgie and decorate it with ornaments.

We invite you to share your colorful creations to be published in the Market Bulletin. Submit your artwork to marketbulletin@agr.georgia.gov or mail to Georgia Department of Agriculture, Attn: Market Bulletin, 19 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive S.W., Atlanta, GA 30334-4250

The Lottie Moon House is located on Cherokee Street in Cartersville. Moon was a member of the Cartersville Baptist Church when she became a missionary and traveled to China. She served there for 39 years and died during a famine in 1912. Today, the Baptist Women's Missionary Union's Christmas fundraising effort is named in her honor. (GDA/Lee Lancaster)

In 2019, Georgia First Lady Marty Kemp and Georgia Grown Executive Chef Holly Chute made this pecan cobbler at the Governor's Mansion and in front of television news cameras. It's been a hit ever since for holiday cooking and supporting Georgia Grown products. "Nothing beats cooking with ingredients grown right here in Georgia!" Mrs. Kemp said at the time.

Internship Program: Department offers variety of experience to interns

Capitol building, State Operations Center for Emergency Management, Georgia Poultry Lab, and farms and dairies.
Williams added that last summer's tour included visiting the Atlanta Humane Society to tie in with GDA's Animal Health Division and the Georgia Poison Control Center tied in with the Department's work in Food Safety and input regulation for herbicides and pesticides.
"We try to dabble in the different parts of the Department. We kick off with the interns meeting the Commissioner and touring the Capitol building," Williams said.

Natalie Hobbs was an intern this summer and continues working at the GDA while completing her master's degree in public health at Emory University. She said what she liked the best was the diversity offered during the program. She interned with GDA's Food Safety and did things with Animal Industry and Emergency Management.
"You can make it your own program. If you wanted to only do stuff within your department or division, you can, but if you want to branch out and make it more interdisciplinary, you can, and that is what I really enjoyed," Hobbs said. "I do

enjoy an interdisciplinary experience. I don't want just to do the same thing every single day."
She added that working part-time at the Department this fall has allowed her to learn even more.
"Now that I am doing more than just my deliverables and projects for Summer, I have been able to talk to people in the profession, especially going to conferences and talking to people in the industry, in academia, and in government and getting a well-rounded experience of what food safety can look like. It's been a really cool experience."
