Memories of Christmas past and present

Georgia Agriculture Commissioner
Merry Christmas Market Bulletin family. I hope the needle I am trying to thread with this article is not too narrow. The goal is to stimulate an "ahha" or two ... or maybe 10,000. We will see.
Since tradition is one of the fuels of the Market Bulletin, I thought a stroll down GWB Memory Lane might be enjoyable for many readers with a focus on Christmas tradition, Atlanta-style. Hopefully, you are still celebrating traditions or creating them. Traditions are healthy. I hope in this digital age that your new ones do not include yelling about something on Facebook. There's too much of that. There was a simpler time that was very enjoyable. I lived it. My parents welcomed me into this world on August 20, 1958, in the protective confines Commissioner of Agriculture Gary Black's "Great of Ft. McPherson, Georgia. They were both 38 Christmas Tree" in his barn, at his home. (Special years old. My dad was a 23-year career Mas- Photo)

ter Sergeant for Uncle Sam's Army. My mom grew up in Maysville, attended college, sewed, and loved a little towheaded boy. I grew up in a brick, GI Loan ranch home. My folks worked hard, insisted on music lessons, strongly encouraged A's, taught respect for everyone, and sat quietly during little league games. My mom died in 1967, but she set in motion Christmas traditions like window candles, a foiled, brightly lit front door, and carols. Her traditions also included perfunctory visits to downtown Atlanta.
In all due respect to Macy's, they've never lit a great tree. They've had nice trees at Lenox Square, but the "Great Tree" was always at Rich's downtown. Choirs would fill each level of "The Bridge." My family would join thousands in the streets to usher in the season. Ok, now that the tree is lit, what's next?
Ever noticed that most stuffed toy pigs are pink? When I was a kid growing up in Atlanta, the only Pink Pig was the one on a monorail that circled the Great Tree. About a week after the lighting ceremony, with my mother in high heels and me in my suit, to Rich's, we would go to spend my dad's loot. Riding the Pink Pig was far more risky than the highest bungee

holiday season & a prosperous new year!

Gentry family harvests joy with holiday lights

By Jay Jones jay.jones@agr.georgia.gov

The cattle in a field on Pine Chapel Road near Calhoun munch contently from the metal hay feeder rings, and they pay little attention to all of the commotions from across the road. On the other side of the road, a herd of inflatable elves, Santas and candy canes light up the night. There are a lot of lights.
"Come here and check this out," said Eddie Gentry, pointing to an electric utility pole where his Christmas light display draws its power. Although Eddie is 84 years old, he sounds like a kid as he proudly showed off the chicken house timer he rigged up to turn the lights on every night from 5:30 to 10 p.m.
"It sounds like I'm a show-off, but I'm not," Gentry said.
With the holiday season in full swing, people across Georgia look to take in the season in lights, whether on the Christmas trees in their homes, at festivals or just checking out someone's front yard display down the road.
You may know someone who goes overboard on Christmas lights. That man is Eddie Gentry and his nephews, Tony and Nevin Gentry, in Gordon County. For the past 12 years on a stretch of Pine Chapel Road, drivers slow down to see the displays stretching across a creek and onto a neighbor's yard, who lets them put up the Christmas decorations.

The scene on Gentrys' property can be seen from Pine Chapel Road. Eddie Gentry and his nephews, Tony and Nevin Gentry, go all out each holiday season to light up their country road in Gordon County. (Jay Jones/GDA)

The display includes dolphins wearing Santa hats, jumping over the creek, and a saxophone-playing snowman belting out "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree" among the characters.
There is also a dog house in a lighted out-

line with a sign that tells passersby to find the puppy among the reindeer, snowmen, nutcrackers and nativity scenes.
Gentry said they have been putting up the light show for the past 12 years. It started

Georgia forests offer wealth of live tree benefits

By Stasia Kelly Georgia Forestry Commission

At the Georgia Forestry Commission, we're all about healthy, productive forestland. That's why we work yearround to protect and conserve this precious resource.
One of the many ways we accomplish this is to monitor diseases and invasive species that can negatively impact trees. The Southern Pine Beetle (SBP) is capable of spreading quickly and causing millions of dollars in damage with one brutal pass. However, a GFC aerial survey completed in September turned up some good news. It showed SPB activity continues to be low across Georgia with only 11 spots identified. The full report can be viewed here: https://gatrees.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/09/2022-SPB-aerial-survey-report_final.pdf.
Trees are on lots of Georgians' minds this month, and as always, the Georgia Forestry Commission is proud to endorse the purchase of a live Christmas tree from one of the state's many tree farms.
Your Market Bulletin has published a list of Christmas tree farms across the state which you can find in recent issues. In addition, the Georgia Forestry Commission maintains a list of growers throughout the state who can supply you and your family with a fresh Christmas tree at https:// gatrees.org/directories/christmas-tree-vendor-directory.
Besides the marvelous fragrance, a live Christmas tree provides, you can be proud of your support of Georgia's forest landowners when purchasing live over manufactured. Our state's 23.2 million acres of forestland sequester more than 1.5 billion metric tons of carbon annually and provide each of us with environmental services and products we depend on all year long. Clean air. Filtered water. Homes for

wildlife and places for camping, hiking and many types of outdoor recreation. Everyday products for our lives, such as paper and lumber. Plus, live trees are recyclable, and it's easier than ever now to find a place to drop off your tree for use as mulch.
Here are some fun facts to remember when you choose a live tree: It takes 5-7 years for a tree to grow to cutting height. The most popular Christmas trees are Leyland, Carolina
Sapphire and Blue Ice cypresses. The average customer makes two cuts on their chosen tree
before turning the task over to a pro at the farm! Another plus for the live tree option is that the growing/harvesting process has a very low impact on the land. In addition, very few pesticides are used on the trees. And, of course, local farmers and local economies benefit when crops are good and business is brisk. Remember, too, that now is the best time of year to plant trees of your own. In addition to the tens of millions of seedlings planted by the $39.1 billion Georgia forestry industry, peruse the Georgia Forestry Commission's online seedling store at www.gaseedlings.org to see which varieties remain in stock for your winter planting. At www.gatrees.org, you'll find a number of resources with information about tree planting. Check out our "Ask the Arborist" feature for commonly asked questions about tree care and a library of helpful, educational videos. Plus, you can find a listing of GFC foresters throughout the state who are ready to help you understand the programs and practices that will enhance your forested land. From your fellow Georgians and friends at the Georgia Forestry Commission, merry Christmas and happy holidays!

Place, Ferrarezi, horticulture Department Head Leo Lombardini and other CAES faculty and staff recently toured the state, speaking to industry leaders who repeatedly mentioned the growing CEA industry and the need for research to support it.
"There is a tremendous opportunity; I see it as a key part of the work we are doing to elevate the college," Place said. "Part of that is in partnership with industry, which is why I appreciate Agrify's support of this project. USDA to conduct Commercial Floriculture survey

ATHENS Beginning in late December, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) will conduct the 2023 Commercial Floriculture Survey (2022 production year) with approximately 1,000 producers throughout Alabama, Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina. Growers will be asked to provide information on production area, sales of floriculture commodities, and the number of agricultural workers on their operations. If NASS does not receive a grower's completed questionnaire by Dec. 30, a representative may reach out to arrange an interview.
"This information helps growers, buyers, government agencies, and others who can use the data to identify state and national trends, make plans, and determine the industry's impact on farm income and the economy," said Anthony Prillaman,

Director of the NASS Southern Regional Field Office. "By participating in the survey, floriculture growers ensure that NASS can provide accurate data on floriculture production, thereby enabling USDA and the industry to be more responsive to domestic and international markets and consumer needs."
Growers can complete the survey by mail, phone, or online at agcounts.usda.gov.
This floriculture survey is a census of commercial floriculture operations that annually produce and sell at least $10,000 worth of fresh cut flowers, potted flowering plants, foliage plants, annual bedding and garden plants, herbaceous perennials, cut cultivated florist greens, propagative floriculture material and unfinished plants.
Beginning last year, the survey went from covering the 17

main producing states to all 50 states, with the top 28 published individually and the remaining states combined into an "other states" total. All states in the Southern region will be published individually.
In accordance with federal law, survey responses are kept confidential. Survey data will be available in aggregate form only to ensure that no individual producer or operation can be identified.
NASS will publish the survey data May 25, 2023, in its Quick Stats database at quickstats.nass.usda.gov.
Previous Floriculture Crops reports can be found at www. nass.usda.gov/Surveys/Guide_to_NASS_Surveys/Floriculture.
For more information on NASS surveys and reports, call the NASS Southern Regional Field Office at (800) 253-4419.

Georgia Cooking: Spiced Sweet Potatoes with Charred
Satsumas, Pecans, and Pomegranate Yogurt Dressing

This unique recipe combines some of the best winter delicacies Georgia has to offer: Satsumas, pecans, sweet potatoes, and pomegranates. Make sure to look for Georgia Grown Besties Satsuma Mandarins and Georgia Grown Pecans in your local supermarket.
To season the sweet potatoes, whole spices (which are fresher than ground) are toasted in a skillet first to lend their fragrance and flavor to the pecan oil, then roughly crushed on a cutting board; no mortar and pestle necessary. Charring the satsuma lends a caramelized, slightly bitter note in the vinaigrette and the dish itself to complement the sweet potatoes. Serve this salad alongside roasted pork loin and sauteed kale if you like.
Did you know pomegranates can be grown in Georgia? Some southeast Georgia blueberry farmers have tried growing pomegranates in the offseason, with the help of research conducted at UGA's Ponder Farm in Tifton.
Ingredients
14 ounces small or medium sweet potatoes
tsp whole cumin seed tsp whole fennel seed 1 Tbsp plus 2 tsps pecan oil, divided Salt and freshly ground black pepper
to taste 2 satsumas (unpeeled)

Chili powder of your choice, such as ancho, smoked paprika or cayenne
2 Tbsp yogurt or sour cream 1 tsp pomegranate juice 1 tsp apple cider vinegar tsp honey 1/8 tsp minced garlic 2 Tbsps chopped toasted pecans 2 Tbsps pomegranate seeds 1-2 Tbsps thinly sliced scallion
Instructions
Heat the oven to 350 degrees.
Prepare the sweet potatoes: Wash sweet potatoes thoroughly, then cut in half lengthwise, then cut each half into long wedges about 1-inch wide (like steak fries). Heat 1 tablespoon pecan oil in a small skillet over medium-high heat. Add cumin and fennel seed and fry 10 seconds, until fragrant, but not

brown. Using a small strainer, strain pecan oil into a medium bowl and transfer drained spices to cutting board. Crush toasted spices using the side of your knife and the heel of your hand. Transfer crushed spices back to the pecan oil in the bowl, add the sweet potato wedges and toss to coat. Season potatoes with salt and freshly ground pepper. Transfer to a sheet pan and bake 30-45 minutes, tossing potatoes halfway through cooking time. Set aside until ready to serve.
Prepare the satsumas: Slice a satsuma, starting from the stem end, into 4-6 thin rounds, about -inch thick. Cut the remaining satsuma in half. Cut one half into -inch thick rounds. Set aside the remaining satsuma half for the yogurt dressing. Wipe out the small skillet and warm over high heat. Char satsuma slices, in batches, if necessary, about 2 minutes per side. Use a wide, flat heat-safe spatula to remove slices if they stick to the bottom of the pan. Once charred, set slices on a plate to cool and sprinkle lightly with salt and chili powder of your choice.

Prepare the yogurt dressing: Juice the remaining satsuma half and add to a small bowl. To the bowl, add the remaining 2 teaspoons pecan oil, the yogurt, pomegranate juice, vinegar, honey, garlic and salt and pepper to taste. Whisk well. Taste and adjust seasoning. (For a thicker dressing, add additional yogurt.)
To serve: Drizzle some of the yogurt dressing onto a serving dish. Arrange sweet potato wedges over the yogurt, drizzle with the remaining yogurt dressing and top with satsuma slices. Garnish with toasted pecans, pomegranate seeds and scallions. Serves 4-6.

Holiday Lights: Light display brings out the kid in all of us

Continued From Page 1

with him helping his nephews next door put up lights. He explained their displays grew each year, and it took longer to set up and take down. "I said if I'm going to take all of my time to help them, then I'm going to start doing it myself.
They start assembling the lights and displays around Oct. 1. Gentry said he has the process down for his lights to where everything is up and plugged in by Thanksgiving night.
Eddie said he couldn't imagine the number of lights used across the three yards, but it's up in the thousands. He doesn't mention the hit on his electric bill, either. "It's just something I like to do," he said.
Eddie's wife, Anne, doesn't mind people driving by slowly during the holidays. A few cars came by on the Monday night Gentry showed them off. Anne said that as the season goes on, lines of cars will form about half a mile just as the sun goes down.
"This is a country road, but there are so many people when 5:30 comes. They start lining up from the end of the road and then turn around and come back," Anne said.
The Gentrys live on 12 acres parceled off his father's original 90-acre farm. His father bought the land in the 1940s and raised corn,

cattle and produce. He said he and his eight siblings did not get many Christmas gifts growing up. He recalled his parents provided what they could each year.
"We were kindly poor. If we got something like a BB gun for Christmas, you were lucky to get it," he said. "Back then, you didn't have Christmas like you do now. We didn't have much. One thing we did get was that we always got a stocking full of fruit."
A long-time Market Bulletin subscriber, Eddie raised cattle on his property for many years and used the Bulletin often to buy and sell cows and supplies. Retired, he lets his nephews cut hay from his fields.
Anne added that occasionally, people leave thank you notes in their mailbox. Sometimes, she added, people put cookies in along with the notes. She added that she doesn't mind Eddie spending so much time with the lights each year. What started as just helping his nephews has grown into something bigger.
"He didn't see it as just the lights but how much the people enjoyed it," Anne said.
Eddie added, "It's just one car after another with kids in it, and they go crazy. That's one reason why I do it. The kids, they love it."
