Buyers from Thailand and Taiwan visited Georgia pecan growers and processors last month for an inbound trade mission to spread the word about pecans in new markets.

Tractor enthusiasts build friendship at Ga. National Antique Ag Show

For a weekend, the Georgia National Fairgrounds in Perry became "Tractor Mecca."
That is how Lee Sackett from Waltham, Minn. described the fourth annual Georgia National Antique Agriculture Show that was held Nov. 10-12. He operates a tractor resto-

ration business with clients across the United States and Canada. He attends antique tractor shows year-round, and he said the show in Perry is one of the best around.
"The first year the show started, I went down to the Florida Flywheelers for their show, and this one was the next week, so we drove from Florida to here," Sackett said. "We had a great time, and I thought, `Gosh, this is great. I need to come back.' I came back the next year, and it's kind of become part of our tradition of places we want to go to."
Folks who work on old tractors are typically divided people demarcated by brands John Deere, Allis-Chambers, Case, Massey, Ford and many others. The Antique Agriculture Show brings people together with a common interest in taking something old and making it as close to new as possible.
"My day job is in computer work, cloud computing, and the best thing about these tractors is that there are no computers on them," said Keith Ledford with the North Georgia Two-Cylinder Club. "You can see the results when you work on a tractor. In computers, you don't see that."
Tractors came in all sizes, too, at the show. Danny Culpepper displayed some of his hand-made brass toy farm implements. He had scale models of all tractors, machinery and implements imagined, including harvesters, combines, and a yellow box scraper with dings and scratches.
"I made this one for my son when he was little, and as you can tell, he played with it," said Culpepper, who displays the little box

scraper for sentimental reasons. It was one of the first ones he built.
Culpepper was a dairy farmer and worked at the U.S. Marine Corps base in Albany before retiring. He is a church pastor and has built his toy farm machines for over 30 years.
"I am truly blessed because I am able to make my toys and bring some happiness to folks," Culpepper said.
"I am blessed to be able to leave a paying job and work for my hobby. I make toys all day, and I love it."

Demonstrations at the show included peanut thrashing and cane grinding and syrup demonstrations that utilized machinery made in the 1930s and '40s. An outdoor plowing demonstration showed how much farming has changed over the years. But the antique farm equipment on display was the star attraction.
Across the hall and surrounded by green John Deere tractors, Kenny Crumbley talked about why he works on old tractors. He said

Georgia Cooking: Rainbow Winter Slaw

This slaw recipe is from Georgia Grown Chef Olivia Rader and is a favorite of Bulletin staff as an easy side dish.
Ingredients 1 medium beet, peeled 1 large apple 1 tsp lemon juice 2 medium carrots 1 five- to six-inch piece daikon radish,
about 6 ounces 2 or 3 thinly sliced green onions cup chopped, toasted pecans
Instructions Use a very sharp knife or a mandoline slicer to julienne beet, daikon radish, apple, and carrot into very thin matchsticks, about 1/16 of an inch, or use the coarse side of a box grater.

Keep all cut vegetables separate until ready to combine with dressing. Rinse surfaces between vegetables, and rinse julienned beets under running water to get rid of excess pigment. This will keep the salad's colors from bleeding into each other.
Hold apple in enough water to cover with 1 teaspoon lemon juice to keep from browning.
About 10 minutes before serving, drain beets and apples well, then spread on opposite sides of a large, paper towel lined baking sheet. Pat dry to remove excess water and set aside while you make the dressing.
Toss vegetables with dressing, then toss with pecans and green onions. Serve.

Georgia Citrus Black Pepper Vinaigrette
Ingredients 2 Tbsp satsuma juice tsp satsuma zest 2 Tbsp lemon juice tsp Dijon mustard cup pecan oil Salt Freshly ground black pepper
Directions Whisk together satsuma juice and zest, lemon juice and Dijon mustard, then gradually add oil while whisking constantly to emulsify. Season with salt and plenty of freshly ground black pepper.

Georgia Grown Macon Showcase offers early jump on Christmas shopping

By Jay Jones
jay.jones@agr.georgia.gov
The annual Georgia Grown Macon Christmas Showcase returns on Dec. 10 at the Shoppes at River Crossing mall in Macon under a big tent. Happy Wyatt with the GDA's Georgia Grown program said they are ready for anything, including a large showing of customers again this year.
"We've had it snow, we've had it sleet, we've had it rain, we've had thunderstorms, and we've had it at 80 degrees," Wyatt said. "And every time we do it, we have wonderful crowds turn out from Macon and surrounding areas."
The showcase will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 10, in the tent set up in the parking lot near the Barnes and Noble store. Visitors will have over 40 Georgia Grown members selling food, personal care,

apparel and other items that make great gifts and stocking stuffers this holiday season.
Wyatt explained they plan the showcase to be as customer friendly as possible. One way to accomplish that is to limit the variety of items.
"A lot of our vendors sell out, and we limited it to 2-3 varieties, like three BBQ sauces or three soaps, so that we don't get stuck with a lot of repetitious things and have a nice selection of things for people to look at," Wyatt said.
The showcase is also popular with Georgia Grown members. Wyatt, Georgia Grown's middle and west Georgia marketing coordinator, said the vendors are selected on a first-come, first-served basis through an application form offered in the Georgia Grown email newsletter.
Wyatt said vendor applications for the 2023 showcase are ongoing. She encouraged members to look at other events held

throughout the year to sell their products. The Georgia Grown program of the
Georgia Department of Agriculture works year-round to promote Georgia-grown and produced products with sales events and opportunities at trade shows across the United States and overseas.
Georgia Grown offers opportunities for vendors in over 25 festivals, fairs and other events each year.
Along with the Georgia National Fair in Perry and Sunbelt Agricultural Expo in Moultrie, both held in October, Georgia Grown members have access to events like Kennesaw's Big Shanty Festival in April, Cartersville's July Fourth Festival and Acworth's Pizza, Pints and Pigskin Festival in September.
To learn more about Georgia Grown and upcoming events, go to www.georgiagrown. com.

Georgia Grown members can contact Wyatt at 478-365-2372 or email her at happy. wyatt@agr.georgia.gov.

World Prematurity Awareness Day is observed annually on Nov. 17 to raise awareness about the concerns of premature birth worldwide. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), approximately 15 million babies are born prematurely each year, accounting for about 1 in 10 of all babies. Why is this important?
A premature baby is one born before 37 weeks of pregnancy. Premature babies may not be fully developed at birth, and many have health problems that can last throughout their life. Intellectual and developmental disabilities can also show up later in childhood, including problems with how the brain works, causing a person to have delays in physical development, learning, communicating, and interacting with others. Why do we think this happens?
Some risk factors for premature birth include a previous premature birth, being pregnant with multiples, tobacco/substance use, high blood pressure, STIs, diabetes, and urinary tract infections. Lack of prenatal care, lack of social support, increased stress, long work hours, and a short interval between pregnancies (less than 18 months) also contribute to premature birth. What are the signs of preterm labor?
Some signs of preterm labor are contractions (the abdomen tightens like a fist) every 10 minutes or less, change in vaginal discharge (a significant increase in the amount of discharge, leaking fluid, or bleeding from the vagina), pelvic

pressure (feeling that the baby is pushing down), dull backache, and abdominal cramps with or without diarrhea. If a pregnant person has any signs or symptoms of preterm labor, they should call their healthcare provider immediately. Who is on the healthcare team?
Following birth, premature babies spend time in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) receiving constant care from a team trained to treat premature babies. Parents of premature babies interact with multiple team members such as: Neonatal nurse: registered nurse with training in caring
for premature and high-risk babies. Neonatal nurse practitioner: neonatal nurse who complet-
ed additional training to assist neonatologists in caring for newborns. Pediatrician: doctor who specializes in treating children from birth through adolescence. Neonatologist: pediatrician who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of newborn health problems. Pediatric resident: doctor who receives specialized training in treating children. Respiratory therapist: provider who treats breathing problems in newborns and manages breathing equipment. Pediatric surgeon: doctor who performs surgery for newborns and children Pediatric social worker: professional who finds various services that might be useful during and after the hospital stay. Parents are also an important part of the care team. Premature babies may go home if they weigh at least 4 pounds, warm themselves, breastfeed or bottle-feed, steadily gain weight, and breathe independently. When the time to bring a premature baby home arrives, parents might feel relieved, excited, or anxious. How can you help?
A few ways to prepare for life at home with a premature baby include learning infant CPR before leaving the hospi-

tal, ensuring comfort administering scheduled medications, understanding the feeding schedule, minimizing exposure to infections by avoiding crowded places and sick contacts, adhering to the follow-up schedule, and monitoring for signs of distress. Caring for a premature baby can be physically and emotionally exhausting for parents. They may even feel angry, guilty, and overwhelmed. Parents of premature babies may find these suggestions helpful during this time: Use a breast pump until the baby can breast-feed. Hospital
staff can show parents how to use a breast pump as well as locate the supplies needed to store milk. Allow healthy friends and family to help. Whether they provide care for other children in the household or run errands, extra help allows parents to save their energy for the baby. Record details of the baby's progress as well as parental thoughts and feelings. Include pictures of the baby so that progress can be documented from week to week. Talk to a partner, friend, or caregiver. If interested, the baby's health team can suggest a support group in the area. Many parents find it helpful to talk to other parents who are caring for a premature baby. How can you show your support?
Caring for a premature baby is a challenge that can be overcome with a supportive team. World Prematurity Awareness Day celebrates the resilience and strength of premature babies, their families, and their healthcare team. In celebration of this day, each reader is encouraged to share this article with the family of a premature infant, and wear purple on Nov. 17 in support of premature infants worldwide. We honor the commitment of parents, caregivers, communities, physicians, nurses, and all healthcare workers who dedicate their time and expertise to making a difference in the lives of every premature infant.

By Josie Smith University of Georgia

Georgia 4-H has selected Melanie Biersmith as the new state 4-H leader. Effective Nov. 1, Biersmith is the ninth state leader in the organization's 118-year history.
The state 4-H leader provides a strategic vision in response to the changing needs of Georgia's youth and works to support diversity and inclusiveness in youth programming.
Georgia 4-H operates under the scope of University of Georgia Cooperative Extension and reaches more than 240,000 youth in a typical program year.
Biersmith most recently served as the associate state 4-H leader for facilities and residential programs for Georgia 4-H. She managed operations and personnel at all six Georgia 4-H centers and coordinated the Georgia 4-H Environmental Education program and the Georgia 4-H summer camp program.

Melanie Biersmith was named the new Georgia 4-H leader this month by the University of Georgia Extension Service. Biersmith is the ninth state leader in the organization's 118-year history. She started with UGA Extension in 2003 as the environmental education coordinator on Jekyll Island. (Special Photo/UGA Extension)

Her career with UGA Extension began in 2003 as the environmental education coordinator on Jekyll Island. She then served as the director of Georgia 4-H at Camp Jekyll and later as the Extension 4-H specialist for science and environmental education until 2018.
Biersmith holds a bachelor's degree in biology from Georgia College and State University and a master's degree in science education from the University of Georgia. She resides in Morgan County with her husband, Andy, her daughter, Drew, and her son, Sam.
"It is inspiring to see the potential in every young person," Biersmith said. "I appreciate the opportunity to watch their development and see how positive youth development experiences guide them on their journey to adulthood."
In her role as state 4-H leader, Biersmith will also oversee recruitment and development of 4-H faculty and staff, advocate for extramural funding to support faculty scholarship, and champion the success of Georgia

4-H facilities. Her leadership will impact in-school, af-
ter-school and non-traditional delivery models facilitated by approximately 120 county Extension agents, 225 educators, program assistants, AmeriCorps members, and thousands of volunteers.
The state 4-H leader guides Georgia 4-H towards the vision and mission of helping youth thrive.
"Melanie will ensure the continued success and stability of Georgia 4-H while also providing a transformative vision for the future of Georgia 4-H," said Laura Perry Johnson, associate dean for Extension with the UGA College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences.

Antique Ag Show: Bringing people together with a common interest

Continued From Page 1

he likes to get his hands dirty, and there is something solitary about it where he can spend hours
"I spent $900 on fixing it up, but I could only get about half of that if I turned it in for scrap metal," Crumbley said. "It's just something in your blood that you want to do. To take something old and rusted and bring life back in it."
Crumbley added that another part of antique tractors and

farm equipment is the fellowship with other antique tractor enthusiasts. He has many friends at shows like the one in Perry.
Sackett expressed a similar sentiment. As part of his work, he traveled from a Florida show to attend the Perry show. Sackett will go to Memphis next to meet with a customer before returning to Minnesota. Regardless of the city, Sackett

said he feels at home. "We come down and see as many people as we can and see
all of our friends and meet potential new ones." The Georgia National Antique Agriculture Show is held
every second weekend in November at the Georgia National Fairgrounds in Perry. For more information, go to www.gnfa. com/p/calendar/georgia-national-antique-agriculture-show.

Georgia is home to many antique tractor shows

The Georgia National Antique Agriculture Show is one of the largest shows of antique farm equipment, tractors and demonstrations in the United States. Locally, there are several tractor shows and heritage farm days where you can get up close to farming machinery over 100 years old. Bostwick Cotton Gin Festival: The little Mor-
gan County town located between Monroe and Watkinsville welcomes visitors every fall for arts and crafts, food, and antique farming demonstrations. Organizers schedule the festival during a road game weekend for the University of Georgia football team, so volunteers from Athens can help park cars. Go to https://bostwickga.com/ for more information. Cumming Steam, Antique Tractor and Gas Engine Expo: Held by the Cumming Antique Power Association, the expo is one of the oldest agricultural antique shows in Georgia and is held every November at the Cumming Fairgrounds. For more information, go to www.capa-ga.com. Inman Farm Heritage Days: The festival is held in September at Minter's Farm in Fayette County, south of Atlanta. The Heritage Days festival is located on a working farm and includes a display of farm equipment, demonstrations and a general store. For more information, go to https://mintersfarm.com/. Gordon County Antique Engine and Tractor Show, Calhoun: Held in October by the Gordon County Antique Engine and Tractor Club, the show offers a wide selection of tractors, big and small, and powered by gas and steam. The show also has a large showing of rare lawn and garden tractors. For more information, go to www.gcaeatc.com. Southeastern Railroad Museum, Duluth: The museum spotlights different modes

of transportation on the first weekend of each month. In August, they invite farm tractor owners to show off their machines and participate in an interactive educational program for children. For more information, go to www.train-museum.org.

Editor's Note: We are sure more shows are held each year,
and we would like to learn more about them. Please get in touch with Jay Jones at jay. jones@agr.georgia.gov to get on the Market Bulletin calendar of events listings.

Georgia Pecan Growers: Buyers from Taiwan, Thailand look at Georgia pecans

Continued From Page 1

Cook explained rising tariffs in China have caused producers to look for new markets for pecans. Members of the Georgia Pecan Growers Association and Georgia Grown trade representatives visited several countries from Southeast Asia earlier this year to educate buyers and importers about pecans. The buyers for October's visit to Georgia were identified during that trip to Southeast Asia.
Cook said another in-bound trade mission for Georgia pecans is planned after Thanksgiving and will focus on culinary food service buyers and include culinary managers of highend resorts across Asia, India and Taiwan.

Funding for the pecan trade missions came from the United States Department of Agriculture's Ag Trade Promotional funding (ATP) and Emerging Market Program grants. The funding is managed by SUSTA, with Georgia Grown organizing the trip and signing up participating producers.
Cook said Georgia Grown and SUSTA plan several trade missions, both abroad and in-bound, each year for different commodities. Cook added that SUSTA has resources available for producers interested in selling their products overseas but are not ready.
"We have opportunities in SUSTA where they can get ex-

port education. They don't have to be ready to pull the trigger," Cook said. "They can explore some of the educational opportunities and export readiness training. If they are interested, we can point them in the direction of trade shows or out-bound or in-bound trade missions that would fit their company."
Georgia companies interested in participating in upcoming trade missions can contact Cook at sarah.cook@agr.georgia. gov or call 229-454-0612.
