Seat Information: The legislation creating Haralson County authorized the justices of the county's new inferior court to designate the site of the county seat, to purchase the land, to lay out and sell town lots, and to arrange for construction of a courthouse and other public buildings. Until a county seat was selected, the law provided that Haralson County elections and public business take place in Tallapoosa (which then was in Carroll County). At some point thereafter, the inferior court designated the settlement of Buchanan as county seat. The General Assembly incorporated Buchanan as a town on Dec. 22, 1857 (Ga. Laws 1857, p. 177).
Courthouse Details: Information about Haralson County's early courthouses is unclear. In 1891, the county began construction of a large red brick courthouse with clock tower that was completed the following year. That building still stands on the town square where it was built and serves as a museum and offices of the Haralson County Historical Society. In 1972, the county built a modern two-story brick courthouse approximately one-half mile from downtown Buchanan. - External Identifiers:
