Obituary
Weeping may endure fo r a night, but joy cometh in the morning. Psalms 30:5
Ethel Walker Williams loved the good things in life - a good laugh, good food, a good time with family and friends. She was the consummate "hostess with the mostest" . Anyone who visited her home quickly experienced her warmth, her generosity of spirit, her graciousness and her wonderful penchant for creating thematic dinners and grand and glorious holiday parties with memorably exquisite desserts. You were made to feel instantly at home whether sitting in her special sun room or among the beautiful wood furnishings and artifacts that she had collected during her travels with her husband of 48 years, Edward "Dick" Williams, a career soldier. It was during her global travels that Ethel honed her culinary talent - learning the art of combining exotic dishes and her "down home cooking" to create the wonderful cuisine that we will never forget.
Making a home for her family in five different states, the District of Columbia, Germany and Thailand, Ethel Walker Williams' life began in Aiken County, South Carolina on August 7, 1923. She was the third of six children born to the late Stuart Walker and the late Annie Lou Walker Willis. Educated in Richmond County, she was a graduate of Haines Normal Institute. She studied cosmetology after high school and became a licensed cosmetologist. She married Dick Williams in 1945, and the couple had three children; Richard, Joyce, and Deborah.
Fit, feisty, outspoken, and an avid walker, Ethel valued education and encouraged her children and grandchildren to "get that piece of paper" because it was "the one thing no one can take away from you" A lifelong learner who was always taking a class, she studied things as varied as ostrich egg decorating and nursing. Her life's motto was "If you make one step, God will make two."
Ethel accepted Christ at an early age, becoming a member of the historic Tabernacle Baptist Church as a teenager. Until her health failed, she was a faithful member of the usher board and the Lydia Sunday School class. For many years she was the unofficial hostess for the first night of revival dinner.
Ethel Walker Williams passed away peacefully, in the arms of her "special Tony," on Monday morning February 8th - having spread beauty, joy and laughter to all those who were blessed to have known her.
Those left with loving memories of a Christian mother, grandmother, relative and friend include a son, Richard (Patricia) Williams, San Diego, California; two daughters, Joyce (Gabriel) Dejoie, Martinez, Georgia and Deborah Bennett, Augusta, Georgia; five grandchildren, Zuri Williams, San Diego, California; Michael Dejoie, Port-au-Prince, Haiti, Anthony (Tony) Dejoie who cherished and cared for her until the end, Racy Bennett, Augusta, Georgia and Brittany Bennett, Augusta, Georgia; one sister, Rosa B. Williams, Augusta, Georgia; two brothers, John Walker, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Charles (Lois) Walker, San Leandro, California; four great grandchildren; a very special friend, Lena Thomas, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
