`Bennie `Mae Williams, "Cja-Cja'\ as she
was affectionately known by those who loved her, passed away from her earthly home on March 9, 2005. She was born on January 11, 1918, to the late Mr. Bennie Maddox and Mrs. Maggie Elim Maddox.
Bennie Mae married the late Solomon A. Williams on December 17, 1937. To this union two children were born, Samuel "Sammy" Bernard (deceased) and Mary Beatrice.
Bennie was a graduate of Haines Normal and Industrial Institute. She earned a degree in Secretarial Science from Syracuse University. She was employed as a Secretary and Substitute Teacher at Silas X. Floyd School for many years.
Bennie Mae gave her life to the Lord at an early age. She was a dedicated member of the Antioch Missionary Baptist Church for over seventy (70) years. She served at Antioch in many capacities including: President of the Mission Ministry, member of the Usher Ministry, Chaplain of the Trustee Ministry and she was one of the founders of the Antioch Gospel Chorus. She was an active member of the 10th District Mission until her illness.
Bennie Mae was a Civil Rights Advocate and was very involved in her community. She worked in a managerial position with the 10th District Voter's Registration Board until her illness. She was the first black female to be appointed as a Georgia Repre sentative in the "Silver-Haired Legislature," where she fought for the rights of Senior Citizens in her community. She was a board member of the Senior Citizens Council. She was a good neighbor, well liked by all and a wonderful friend, loving mother and grand
mother. She leaves to mourn her passing, yet celebrate her life: a
loving daughter, Ms. Mary B. Stewart; a devoted daughter-in-law, Thelma G. Williams; five grandchildren, Bonita C. Williams, Samuel "Butch" Williams, Demetrius Williams, Sharon (Joseph) Hill and Christopher Steward; ten great grandchildren; one aunt, Viola Williams; four godchildren, Heyward Johnson, Cathy Johnson, Barbara Henderson and Nathaniel Cotton (deceased); two dear friends, Ms. Claudia Marilyn and Mrs. Helen Sutton; and a host of other relatives and friends.
