OBITUARY

"And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life."

(Favorite Scripture)

St. John 3:14-15

On November 22, 1894, Mary Liza Williams was born in Edgefield, S.C. Her parents were the late Mary Bell Burton and the late Johnny Simmons. During her early youth, she attended Boggs Academy and also joined the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. A beautiful Christian life of serving her Lord and her people ended on Friday evening, October 29, 1993.
Mother Mary, as she was affectionately called, relocated in 1916 to Augusta, Georgia, where she made her permanent home. She was united in holy matrimony to the late George N. Williams. She was a loving wife, a good neighbor, a faithful friend and an inspiration to all whom she met.
In April, 1920, she continued her work in Christs Kingdom by uniting with Young Zion (later named Greater Young Zion) Baptist Church where she has been a faithful and ardent worker for 73 years. She has been active in numerous church auxiliaries. She invested her many talents into every good work she could find. The highlights of her service at Greater Young Zion include the following:
- organized the churchs first Vacation Bible School - sponsored the churchs first Womens Day - Sunday School superintendent - Sunday School teacher - BTU president - Senior Choir president

Er
- Trustee - active in Missionary Society and Willing Workers Club - organized and directed numerous fund raisers, youth
programs and other church activities
In 1972, she became "Mother of the Church". The example she lived by day by day and the love she shared with all exemplified her worthiness of that title in all ways.
She was also active and held various positions in community organizations including the Caroliers Chorus of Augusta, Ursula Collins PTA, and Senior Citizens groups.
Leaving behind to cherish the memory of this peaceful, loving and devout Christian are a foster daughter, Julia Means, Orangeburg, S.C.; a dear cousin, Chola Dawkins, Washington, D.C.; an adopted daughter, Earnestine H. Bell, Beech Island, S.C.; godchildren, Theodora Booker and Vernon Neely; other cousins, and a host of dear friends.
