- REFLECTIONS -
Alma Anita McLaine White, 92, departed this life in the early morning of Sunday, June 24, 2012. Born on October 6,1919 in Haverford, Pennsylvania, Alma was the youngest of nine children born to Smith Hannibal McLaine, Sr. and Emma Catherine Vance McLaine. Her tight-knit siblings Smith Jr., Charles Sr., Catherine, Olga, Florence, Alyce, Margaretta and Gracye affectionately nicknamed her Ommie. All of her brothers and sisters preceded her in death
Ommie, a very vibrant youngster, accepted the Lord at an early age. She worshiped at Saints Memorial Baptist Church and later Bethel A.M.E. Church where she cultivated a healthy appreciation for and love of music watching her father and uncle actively participate in the choir. A graduate of Haverford High School, she played on the field hockey team. She pursued a degree as a Physical Education major at Virginia State University until the untimely death of her mother.
In 1944, she was joined in holy matrimony to Charles Temple White, Sr. of Ardmore, Pennsylvania. Four children resulted from this union, to which she frilly devoted all of her efforts and love: Charles Temple, Jr. (Janice), Catherine Elizabeth (Frank "Buddy"), Carden Smith & Channing Joseph. They were united in marriage for 56 years until his death on December 30,1990.
Ommie joined many women of the era by working at the Quarter Master (Philadelphia) during World War II. She would go on to become a Statistician on the world's first computer, ENIAC, and continue her career as a civilian employee of the U.S. Navy, retiring at the age of 70 as a Computer Engineer/Operator actively involved in mastering the COBOL programming language.
She regularly delighted in hobbies like horseback riding, ice skating, knitting, crocheting, and reading. She was also a wonderful seamstress. Alma loved travelling just as much. Out of all her travels, her favorite trip, a cruise to the Mediterranean, which in her later years, allowed her to fulfill a lifelong dream. She also filled her free time with civic work through memberships in organizations like the Charter Chapter of TWIGS, Inc., the National Association of Business and Professional Women (B&P), and the Yeadon Chapter of the NAACP.
She leaves to celebrate her transition home her four children, six grandchildren, Kristin (Horace "Chip)], Charles Temple III, Darren, Tai-ya (Rowland), Christopher & Channa. The eleven youngsters that made her a most cherished great grandmother, Blaire, Yessenia, Autumn, Nathaniel, Ameenah, Zaikiah, Xavier, Jeremiah, Kweli, Phonte & Caleb. Two surviving sisters-in laws, Ruth White (Howard), and Lorraine White (Joseph), and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, friends and admirers who will greatly miss her unique brand of class, intelligence, tact and grace.

- IN MEMORY OF MY MOTHER You were a precious gift from God above, so much beauty, grace and love. You touched our hearts in so many ways, your smile so bright even on the bad days. You heard God's whisper calling you home, you didn't want to go and leave us alone. You loved us so much, you held on tight,
till all the strength was gone and you could no longer fight. He had called your name twice before,
you knew you couldn't make him wait anymore. So you gave your hand to God and slowly drifted away, knowing that with our love we will be together again someday.
- PALLBEARERS Family and Friends
- ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS The family would like everyone to know that: we know you care; your thoughts, prayers, and deeds make our grief easier to bear.
God bless each and everyone of you.
