When Barth's Cast Picture is Painted
When Earth's last picture is painted a n d the tubes are twisted and dried, When the oldest colours have faded, and the youngest critic has died,
We shall rest, and, fa ith , we shall need it - lie down fo r an aeon or two, Till the Master o f A ll Good Workmen shall p u t us to work anew l
A n d those that were good shall be happy: they shall sit in a golden chair; They shall splash a t a ten-league canvas with brushes o f comets' hair;
They shall fin d real saints to draw fro m - Magdalene, Peter, and Paul; They shall work fo r an age a t a sitting a n d never be tired a t alll
A n d only the Master shall praise us, a n d only the Master shall blame; A n d no one shall work fo r money, a n d no one shall work fo r fam e, B u t each fo r the joy o f the working, a n d each, in his separate star,
Shall draw the Thing as he sees I t fo r the God o f Things as They Are!
