Mrs. Margaret}. Weston, founder of Margaret J. Weston Health Center in Clearwater.SC; daughter of the late Rev. and Mrs. H. H.Jackson of St. Louis, MO and wife of Dr. Paul D. Weston, General and Abdominal Surgeon, Augusta, GA, entered into peaceful eternal rest, Monday, November 11, 199H
She received a degree in Nursing from The Homer G. Philips Hospital School of Nursing, St. Louis, MO; a Bachelor of Science Degree from Loyala University, Chicago, IL and a Master of Science Degree from the University of Chicago, Chicago, IL. Mrs. Weston was certified in many other areas of Health including: The First International Interdisciplinary course in A.I.D.S. Education from the University of South Columbia, School of Public Health, Columbia, SC, July 1988; Managing Ambulatory Health Care, Harvard University School of Public Health, Boston, MA, June 1989; Prevention and Beyond: National Conference on H.I.V. Infection and A.I.D.S. among Racial and Ethnic Population - U.S. Public Health Service and Department of Health and Human Services, Washington, DC, August 1989; Introduction to Health Instructors Training American Red Cross - Eastern Operations Headquarters, Atlanta, GA, March 1990. She was director of Nursing for two years in the Peoples Hospital, St. Louis, MO, and was instructor of Nursing at Tuskegee Institute School of Nursing, Tuskegee, AL.
She assisted in the private practice of surgery in the office of her husband for several years. Margaret operated the Family Planning Program in Aiken and Edgefield Communities, Aiken, SC, 1968-1970 and a Planned Parenthood Program in Aiken County, 1970-1978.
In 1970, Margartet J. Weston founded and organized the Planned Parenthood of Aiken County, Inc. The corporation later changed its name in 1978 to Rural Health Services, Inc., and expanded its services to include primary Medical and Dental Services. Rural Health Services, Inc., is a non-profit health organization. The center was named after Margaret J. Weston by its Board of Directors in honor of Mrs. Westons accomplishments in providing for the under served population in the county. The center operates from a $1,032,000 facility built on 2.2 acres of land donated by United Merchants and Manufacturing Company.
Margaret J. Weston was the recipient of many awards, citations and honors as follows: Citizen of the Year, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Augusta, GA, 1976; Citizen of the Year for Humanitarian Services, Islam Temple #4 A. A.O.N.M.S. (Masons) Aiken, SC, 1977; Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Augusta, GA, 1980; Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Augusta, GA, 1980; East Central Georgia Health System for Loyal and Dedicated Service, 1980; Aiken County Sheriffs Dcpt., 1982; Outstanding Community Service -Tabernacle Baptist Church, 1982; Board of Directors, Rural Health Services, Inc. and Margaret J. Weston Health Center for 12 years Dedicated Service and Founder, 1983; Semiquincentcnary Award Augusta Black History Committee, 1983; 1986 Community Service Award, South Carolina Primary Care Association; Achievement Award Services Aiken Recreation Department, 1986; Gems of Aiken, Dedicated Service to Aiken County, 1987; Resolution #87-5-153 Council Administration Form of Aiken County Government for 16 years of Service To the People of Aiken County Through the Health Center, 1987; Resolution By Members of the State of South Carolina House of Representatives, Columbia, SC, 1988; North Augusta Chapter, Jack and Jill of America, Inc., Outstanding Service; Certificate of Appreciation for Contribution of Time and Expertise to Eliminate the Spread of A.I.D.S., Augusta Red Cross Chapter, 1989; Primary Health Care Services, Exceptional Accompishment In Primary Health Care, Hilton Head, SC, 1989; Eta Theta Zeta Chapter Outstanding Citizen of Year Award, Augusta Chapter Zeta Phi Zeta Sorority, 1990.
Margaret belonged to many civic and professional organizations which include: American Nurses Association; American Public Health Association; National Association of Community Health Centers; Primary Health Care Association of SC; National Executive Directors Association; South Carolina Statewide Health Co-Ordinating Council by Special Appointment of The Honorable Richard Riley, Governor of SC; Member of Board of Directors - Emphasis, South Carolina Community Improvement Board, Appointed by The Honorable Richard Riley South Carolina State Governor; Member of Board of Directors of East Central Georgia Health Systems Agency, Inc. for six years and served as Board Secretary for 5 years; Affiliated member of American College of Utilization Review Physicians; Charter Member of Zeta Xi Omega Chapter, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority; Charter Member of Aiken Chapter Links, Inc., Chi Eta Phi Sorority; Member of Tabernacle Baptist Church; Deaconess Board and President, Red Rose Auxiliary, Tabernacle Baptist Church.
Mrs. Westons Executive Secretary, Dec Karr, states that "Mrs. Weston has been a good friend to all of us here at the MargaretJ. Weston Health Center, she was notjust an employer but a caring person. She will be sadly missed by all. We loved her so... She always found time to care and above all to LISTEN."
Margaret leaves to cherish her memories her beloved husband, Dr. Paul D. Weston; a sister, Joy McDuffie, Laurenburg, N.C.: a niece, Shirley McDuffie McCoy, Brooklyn, N.Y.; and numerous relatives and friends.
