Life Reflections
On June 14, 1954, a little girl, Adonia Mayette, came into the lives o f Paul Lawrence Dunbar Smith and Lee Eloise Smith. Although they already had two little girls, the Lord gave them one more to complete their special littlefamily. From the beginning, Donie, as it was decided that she would be called, was a great bundle ofjoy. She wasfull o f life and hadjust that little hint o f mischief, keeping the housefull of laughter. The radiance o f her personality provided an encouraging touch to the lives ofpeople she met
Donie attended Lafayette Elementary school and Grahman Middle School in Centerville, Illinois. As a student, she sang in the choir, was on the varsity cheerleading squad, the drama club, and numerous other extra-curricular activities. She graduatedfrom Hughes-Quinn Junior High and East Saint Louis
Senior High Schools, respectively. Donie then attended and graduatedfrom The Automation Technology Center in Saint Louis, Missouri. Following the spiritual guidance o f her parents, Donie received Christ as her personal savior. She was baptized and became a dedicated member o f thefamily church, Shiloh
Missionary Baptist Church, East Saint Louis, Illinois. She was active in the Sunday School, Junior Choir, and Usher Board. She continued working in the church after moving to The Twin Cities o f Minneapolis-Sk Paul, Minnesota where she worshipped with New Hope and Seven Star Baptist Churches. Donie, as most members o f the Smith family, was musically inclined, and developed into a gifted choir director. She served as Choir Directorfor several churches in the Twin Cities and was also the Chapter Representativefor the Saint Paul Chapter o f The James Cleveland Gospel Music Workshop ofAmerica. She held several positions, workingfor a number o fyears at West Publications as a researcher. Thejob which brought her the most satisfaction was that o f Child Protection Shelter provider for the state ofMinnesota. She provided emergency loving carefor over 1,000 children and was a member o f the Minnesota Foster Care Associates. Donie fs life was an effectual one to those she met,
leaving a positive influence with a hint o f humor
Donie fs family who will cherish her memory includes two daughters, Tanika J. West and Shawnta L. MacGoodwin along with one son, DeAngelo D. MacGoodwin, all of

To my FAVORITE Cousin -
I love you and miss you! You are my favorite because you loved me when I was unloveable. You believed in me when I didn't believe in myself. You understood me, when everyone just couldn't figure me out (even my own self, sometimes). You were there for me when I thought I could do it on my own.
I rejoice knowing you're in the Savior's arms! Yet, I have only thing to be sad about... I wonder if you know how much I love you! I don't know that I could ever tell how much you meant to me. But right now, I just want to thank you for being you -
`cause there's nobody like my cousin, Donie.
Love you and I'll see you later,
Your little cousin, Christine

You Never Can Tell You never can tell when you send a word
Like an arrow shot from a bow By an archer blind, be it cruel or kind,
Just where it may chance to go. It may pierce the breast of your dearest friend,
Tipped with its poison or balm, To a stranger's heart in life's great mart
It may cany its pain or its calm.
You never can tell when you do an act Just what the result will be.
But with even cert ] on are B Thouuh the her- est}ou rr.~} Each kindly act is an acorn arcprea In God's products e s ; ...
You may not know bu: me tree shan grow With shelter for those who toil.
You can never tell what your thoughts will do In bringing you hate or love,
For thoughts are things, and their airy wings Are swifter than carrier doves.
They follow the law of the universe, Each thing must create its kind,
And they speed o'er the track to bring you back Whatever went out from your mind.

Sometimes sisters click in a way that goes beyond just being related. They become each other's support system, ally, and confidante-
other words they become the best kind o ffriends. That's how we saw each other. Funny, when we were together, it wasju st like when we were little girls again in the house with Mama and Daddy. A s we grew up, you were our best cheerleader, our best supporter and defender. We were happy that you knew that you could count on us. The most difficult part o f being your sister was that we could not make you well again. So. we did our best to comfort you when you
were going through tough times and prayed it wouldn't be so difficult. O f course, we didn't wantyou to go, but God knew that you were tired. Girl, you know that we're gonna miss you. But we will go on and do our best. Every time we sing, preach, or pray, we know that you and your daddy will have the biggest smile. A nd your mama will gently look and say there are my girls. Sometimes she will look at you and daddy and shake her head just like she used to when you actedju st like hint You know you did! Although, you are not physically
here, you will never leave us. We love you.
