Dr. Solomon William Walker, II, the third of four children, was born to James Henry Walker and Cammie Lee Faucette Walker on July 25, 1936 in Atlanta, Georgia. He made his transition on Saturday, July 20, 2013 in Augusta, Georgia.
Solomon received his early education in private and public schools in Atlanta. He graduated from Morehouse College in 1958 with a B.A. degree in Business and was employed with the Pilgrim Health and Life Insurance Company (a company conceived by his grandfather, Solomon William Walker, Sr.) as a field representative. Before leaving Pilgrim he had attained the position of Board Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. The company was considered to be one of the nation's largest black-owned insurance firms until it was sold in 1989. He did further study at Atlanta University and Georgia State University. He received a fellowship to Stanford University where he studied executive management.
He founded the Georgia Association of Minority Entrepreneurs (GAME), and Solomon Walker and Associates Consultants. He was a longtime member of Tabernacle Baptist Church where he served as a trustee. He was a member of the NAAGP, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, and the Morehouse College Alumni Association. Some of his past affiliations are: Board of Visitors for the University of Georgia and the Foundation Board, Paine College Board of Trustees, Warm Springs Board, Chairman of the Augusta Complete Count Commission for the U.S. Census, the Georgia Chapter of the Insurance Accounting and Statistical Association and the CSRA Business League. He worked tirelessly on the Board of the Small Business Association, which was an organization that was near and dear to his heart. Over the years he has received many honors and distinctions among which are: Delegate to the White House Conference on Small Business; participated in a special White House briefing on Foreign, North/South, and African-American Relations. He was presented an award by President Ronald Reagan at the White House as the United States Small Business Advocate for the State of Georgia. He received an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Humane Letters from Morehouse College.
In addition to being a well-known businessman, he was an extraordinary husband and father. He never met a stranger especially while eating at the Waffle House, Cracker Barrel or visiting any car lot in Augusta.
