MRS. BETTYJEAN SHUEMAKE WALKER, a retired educator, was bom in Augusta, Georgia on September 13, 1942. She was the daughter o f the late Mr. Earnest Shuemake and Mrs. Mary B. Shuemake. Mrs. Walker entered into eternal rest on June 8, 2009, at University Hospital, after a briefillness.
In her youth, Betty accepted Christ as her personal Savior and was baptized at Macedonia Baptist Church. During that time, she attended Sunday School, Baptist Training Union and was a member o f the Red Circle Mission. As an adult she continued serving God as a member o f the Shepherd Staff, Tribe o f Benjamin and the J. S. Wright Adult Sunday School Class.
Mrs. Walker attended the Richmond County public schools and was a 1960 graduate o f Lucy Craft Laney High School. Upon graduation, she attended Paine College in Augusta, Georgia where she received a Bachelor o fArts degree in Elementary Education in 1964. Betty received a Masters o f Education degree in Special Education from South Carolina State College in 1985.
On June 12, 1965, she was united in holy matrimony to the late Mr. James Lanier Walker. This union was blessed with one son, Brent Jovon Walker. She truly enjoyed traveling with herfam ily andfriends throughout the United States. Mrs. Walker was a sports enthusiast who enjoyed traveling with her husband and friends to various sporting events which included the University o f Georgia Bulldogs and the Atlanta Falcons.
Betty had a great love fo r children and this was evident in her chosen profession. She truly enjoyed her career as an educator in the Richmond County Public School System. She was a classroom teacher and a special education consultant. After retiring from the school system, she continued in the educational arena as a teacher at the Augusta State Medical Prison.
Betty was an active member o f many civic organizations including: Richmond County Retired Educators Association, Jack and Jill o fAmerica (Augusta Chapter), Les Femmes Fatales Bridge Club, Eta Theta Zeta Chapter o f Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., Augusta Branch o f National Association o f University Women (treasurer) and BBB's. She was a volunteer fo r AARP, Region 6 where she was an active member and held various offices in the Augusta Chapter 266. She was awarded the AARP 2007 Power o f One Recognition Award and worked tirelessly to further the goals o f the organization.
Betty had a great love for life and she was a joy to be around. Her contagious smile often brought comfort to those whose paths she crossed. Her grandchildren were the apples o fher eye and she truly enjoyed her time with them. Retirement lead her to continue to serve others who were less fortunate and this gave her a great deal o fpleasure.
She was preceded in death by her brother, the late Harold Shuemake.
Her legacy will live on through the lives o f her children, Brent Jovon (Angie) Walker; her grandchildren, Brittany J. Walker and Brianna J. Walker. Betty leaves to celebrate her life: her loving mother, Mary Shuemake o f Augusta, GA; her siblings, Barbara (Bishop Clarence) Carr, Eamestine (Robert) Stokes, all o f Atlanta, GA, George Shuemake o f Augusta, GA; one aunt, Mrs. Esther Brawner o f Greenwich, CT; nieces and nephews, Leslie Carr, Mark (Jessica) Carr o fAtlanta, GA, Saungaylia (Kendall) Randolph o f Tallahassee, FL, Quanda Southward o f Augusta, GA and Oba Shuemake o fAtlanta, GA; and a host o f other relatives andfriends.
