Obituary
C )e a . ( Q e r d e r y o J u t t was bom in Appling, Georgia on August 15, 1915, to Rev. Rufus George and Willie Mae Cobb Tutt. Six siblings preceded him in death.
Verdery received his early education in the Columbia County Schools and later attended Haines Normal and Industrial Institute in Augusta.
On May 18, 1938, Verdery united in Holy Matrimony to the former Eulala McCladdie. To this union three children (Joyce, LaVerte and Byron) were born. In May 1998, they celebrated a blissful sixtieth anniversary. "Daddy" or "Papa", as he was affectionately known, was the patriarch of his family.
He was baptized at Friendship Baptist Church in Appling, Georgia and later became a member of Antioch Baptist Church in Augusta, Georgia. He was ordained as a Deacon in 1958. He was "Deacon of The Year' in 1985 and 1996. He also served as Superintendent of the Sunday School for a number of years.
A self taught barber, he was licensed for over 50 years. At age 60, he enrolled in Augusta Area Technical School to become competitive with the new and changing technology and therefore became a licensed cosmetologist. He was the owner and operator of Tutt's Barber and Style (formerly known as Tutt's Barber & Grill) for 52 years. He was a charter member of the Augusta Richmond County Barbers Association and the Augusta Business League, where he served as president and treasurer respectively.
Verdery leaves to mourn: a devoted wife of 60 years, Eulala Tutt; one daughter, Valeria Joyce Day, Silver Springs, MD; two sons, Verdery LaVerte Tutt and Byron LaVosier Tutt, both of Augusta, GA; one daughter-in-law, Betty M. Tutt, Augusta, GA: one son-in-law, Griffin F. Day, III, Silver Springs, MD; seven grandchildren, Monica Tutt, Sharmen "Sissy" Tutt and Byron "B.J." Tutt, II, all of Augusta, GA; Veronica "Flipper" Tutt, Newnan, GA; Ingrid Tutt, Athens, GA; Marva Tutt, Charlotte, NC; and Valeria Day, Silver Springs, MD; two great-grandchildren, Taylor and Tia Tutt, both of Athens, GA; one brother, Michael Tutt; one sister, Angela Tutt; five nephews and one niece; and a host of other relatives and friends.
