'John "Roosevelt ` Eownsend, Sr. was the third child born to the late Huth and Ernest Townsend, S r., on D ecem ber ig , i g i y i n `Johnston, SC .
J ( e was baptized at M in e Creek rBaptist Church at an early age, becoming a member oj the Sunday School and later as an adult member, working in the Church until he relocated his fam ily to Columbia, S C and became a member o f `Bethlehem cBaptist Church. r.Even then he continued working within M in e Creek Church as a visiting member.
John was educated in the Saluda County public school system and graduated Saluda Hosenwald Jiig h in ig g o . JCe is a veteran of the United States /Army.
In / 9 6 5 John moved his fam ily to Queens, M ew York settling in South Ozone H ark where he resided until his death.

Institutional Christian M ethodist 'Episcopal Church in M ew York City where he served diligently as a member o f the M a le Usher H oard; L ea d er of the rDepartment of L a y M inistry o f W illiams Institutional C .M /E . and the C .M / E . Church, M ew York/M ew T a g land rDistrict; a member of Class M um ber `Three; member of the H oard of Christian `Education and the SXdult Sunday School Class. CEt the time of his death, John was Chairman of the H oard of Stewards in his local church as well as the M ew Y ork/M ew 'England district.
`Well known from the east to the west coast fo r his culinary expertise with a barbecue grill, John was known in his church community as "H ig John the Harbecue M a n " .

(He was an employee oj 'Railex Corporation jo r j o years as a welder/machinist four of which were after his retirement in 19 9 2 . D strong member of the union, `Jofm served bis fellow workers for 2 8 years as Shop Steward oj the H D CW - L oca l 1 yg.John 'R. 'Townsend, Sr. departed this life on Wednesday, October 9, 19 9 6 at the age of 68.
J i e was preceded in death by his daughter Carolyn Denise Downsend; his sister, Willette Downsend-'Redding; and his brother, Chester D avid Downsend, Sr.

Downsend, Jr .; and James M cCain (Diane) ofWestville, South Carolina; his sister Leora Downsend-Cooper (Daron) oj Saluda, South Carolina; his brothers: `Ernest Downsend, Jr. (Dnnie 'Ruth), and JLlester Downsend (M ary Dime) oj Denver, Colorado.
grandchildren: Sheldon Sr., 'Rashida, Jonathan, Caleb, Maratesa, Michelle, M ichael Jr., Chante, Camille, 'Rita, Dimothy and Dony.
