Mrs. Goldie Virginia Townes
13, 1923-- s4u<Mst, 19, 2006
Mrs. Goldie Virginia Townes entered into rest on Saturday, August 19, 2006 at the University Hospital. Goldie V. Townes was born on May 13, 1923 in Raleigh, North Carolina. She was the daughter of the late Ulysses Puryear and Alice Puryear Henderson.
Goldie was raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and was a graduate of Simon Gratz High School. Her life long ambition was to be come a teacher, however, she chose employment in the field of So cial Service. She worked many years for the State Department of Public Welfare where she served in this capacity until retirement.
On May 12, 1948 she was united in marriage to the late Wilbert H. Townes, Sr. To this blessed union one son and one daughter were born; Wilbert H. Townes, Jr. and Sharon Merriweather.
Goldie received Christ at an early age she was baptized at Tenth Memorial Baptist Church; she was active in many auxiliaries. Later Goldie joined New Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church and enjoyed fellowship and Bible study with her peers.
Goldie Townes affectionately known as "Miss Goldie" was a car ing, supportive and loving individual. She was admired by both young and old for her words of wisdom and encouragement. Al though small in stature in her mind no challenge was too enumerous for her to conquer. We will all cherish the precious time we spent with her and were blessed by knowing and loving her as she loved us.
We know that God has called His servant home to live with Him in rest.
Her cherished memory will forever linger in the hearts and minds of her loved ones: a devoted daughter and son-in-law Sharon (Bernard) Merriweather, one daughter-in-law Jean Townes; four grandchildren, Siget Stockton, Draye Townes, Nicole Townes and Nandi Merriweather; two great-grandchildren; dear friend, Beverly Robinson; godsister Evelyn Battles and a host of relatives and friends.
