THE OBITUARY
Samuel Henry Tinsley was born to the late Elder William Bett Tinsley and Dorothy Elizabeth Tinsley on August 19,1919 in Chicago Illinois. He was the seventh ofeight children.
Samuelgrew up and attended Elementary and High School in Toledo, Ohio. In 1938 hejoined the National Guard and in 1941 he volunteeredfor the infantry division ofthe armedforces. Samuel rose in rankfrom Private to Communications sergeant. His duties were to supervise an Infantry Communication Section of Radio and Telephones, direct the laying ofwires and installation oftelephones and radios between company and thefront lines, direct the operations ofcommunications by the section personnel in Italy and also to keep records ofall messages handled, prepare rosters and assign the work to the personnel.
He came to the State of New York in the early forties. He later met a young lady by the name of Lillian Jenldns, to whom he became united in the Holy estate of matrimony on November 4, 1945. He received an honorable dischargefrom the service on November Eleventh ofthatsameyear. To this long and lasting union were born two beautiful daughters; Sandra Gayle and M^rsha Lorraine. ^
Through theyears Samuel workedfor Chunkys Chocolate and Davids Carpet unitlhis retirement afterforty years.
Samuel was afaithful member ofthe Church OfGod and Saints OfChrist where hisfather was the Pastor. There he served in several capacities.
In 1951 He became a member ofthe "SAWDUST TRAIL " at 966 Fulton Street, Brooklyn, New York under the leadership ofthe late Bishop Frederick Douglas Washington who was then known as Elder Washington. It was during those soul stirring services under the tent that he accepted Christ as his personal saviour and was saved, sanctified, baptised and fitted with the Holy Ghost. He joined the "Echoes ofGethsemane Choir" under the leadership of the late Sister Lane. During the early conception of the church Elder Washington formed the first Deacon Board of the Church and appointed brother Samuel Tinsley as the first Deacon because he felt that he would be a good helper. As the Church progressed in membership they marchedfrom a small edifice to the spacious buUding located at 1372 Bedford Avenue which the Pastor named Bethel Temple Church OfGodhi Christ. In Time Deacon Tinsley became a member ofa special group called "THE SELF-HELP CLUB" which was instrumental in raisingfunds to beautify the edifice. He servedfaithfully in the ministry ofdoing whatever his handsfound to do until the demise of his beloved Pastor, Bishop Washington in 1988.
He continued to befaithful, steadfast, unmoveable and always abounding in the work ofthe Lord even under the leadership ofthe present Pastor, Elder Robert L. Madison. He was often heard saying to him, "As I was with Bishop, so wfflllie with you. "In thefattofJ989 Pastor Madison appointed Deacon Tinsley as thefirst coordinator ofthe Deacon Boards. He was later appointed the Chairman ofthe Senior Deacon Board.
Through theyears Deacon Tinsley continued to befaithful in the work ofthe Lord. One ofhis several talents is carpentry by which he has been instrumental in laying carpet for many of the outstanding churches, public buildings and homes in the Metropolitan area. The carpet ofour main sanctuary which we are now privileged to enjoy was placed under his supervision.
Deacon Tinsley has received numerous outstanding awards, plaques and certificates ofachievements through the years, yet space will notpermit the naming ofthem all, however he never ceasedfrom giving God all the glory and honor for his success. It was in January of this year that he was named the first "Church Father" oj Washington Temple by Pastor Madison. An honor ofwhich he was extremelyproud. He was always in the company ofgreat men and he honorably served in these positions until his demise on Monday, April 15th after a shon hospitalization at the Methodist Hospital in Brooklyn, New York.
