** OBITUARY **
Earl Harold Thurmond , one of the eight children of the late Reverend James Ramsey Thurmond and Alberta King Thurmond was born March 22, 1932 in Augusta, Georgia. He departed this life, August 22, 1985.
Mr. Thurmond obtained his early education in the Richmond County Public Schools. He was a graduate of Lucy Craft Laney High School 1950; Paine College 1954; New York University 1959; Tuskegee Institute 1983; he did additional study at Nova University.
"Mr. T", as he was affectionately called, worked diligently from his teenage years until his death. His employment with the Richmond County Board of Education spanned thirty-one years: Classroom teacher at Levi White and Weed Elementary School, First Principal ofJohn M. Tutt Elementary School, Principal of C. T. Walker Elementary School, and at the time of his death Earl was employed as a Human Relations Consultant of the Title IV-D, Chapter II Project.
Over the years, Earl was active and held various positions in many organizations including: Deacon Board of Jordan Grove Baptist Church; Executive Board of Y.M.C.A.; Boy Seduts of America; Board of Director of Lyndale School and Training Centers; Director of Paine College National Alumni Association; Member of Leadership Augusta Class 1980-81; Life Member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity; Member of Richmond County Board of Zoning Appeals; Member of Fair Employment Practice Advisory Board for the State of Georgia; Member of Georgia Association of Educators, Delegate to the National Educators Association; Organizer and Chairperson of Oakland Ave. Neighborhood Watch Club; Member of the East Central Mental Health and Mental Retardation Advisory Board; Member of the NAACP; Member of the Board of Directors of the Bethlehem Community Center; President 1978 of the Georgia Association of Eleme ntary School Principals; and a member of the Campaign Committees for Senator Sam Nunn and Congressman D. Douglas Barnard. Earl Was a city council candidate in 1980, 1982 and 1983.
He was appointed Lieutenant Colonel, Aide DeCamp, Governors Staff by both Governors Carter and Busbee, and was invited to and attended the inauguration of President Jimmy Carter in Washington, D.C.
Earl H. Thurmond received various awards and honors in his lifetime. Among those Were: 1953 President Senior Class, Paine College; 1959 - Mjin of the Year, Psi Omega Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity; 1971 - Mount Vernon Baptist Church Annual Award; 1973 - Man of the Year, Augusta Lincoln League; 1975 - Humanities Award, Augusta Chapter SCLC; 1980 - "This is your Life" - Hosted by Faculty, Students, and Parents at C. T. Walker School; 1984 - Appreciation Award, Richmond County Student Council Association.
Mr. Thurmonds memories ^ill be cherished by a devoted wife of 31 years, Maxine; loving children, Maggie T. Dorsey, Earl, Jr., DaHenri Ramsey and Kimberly Tyxine; a supportive mother, Alberta King Thurmond; his "animated" grandsons,. Michael, Daniel and David; son-in-law, Keith Dorsey; four loyal brothers, Bennie (Margaret), East Orange. N.J., Marion (Nora), Williamsville, N.J., Jonas (Velma), Dunellen, N.J., and Louis (Lillian), Irvington, N.J.; three devoted sisters, Mary T. Bass (George), Myrna Joan Thurmond, Newark, N.J., and Barbara T. Jones, Edison, N.J.; in-laws, Henry and Maggie Wilson; three devoted uncles, Loyd Thurmond, John King, and Perking King; two adoring aunts, Jan Moore, Long Island, N.Y. and Louise Judkins, San Francisco, CA; two god-children, Otis Copeland. HI and Buena Boatright; special nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives.
