** OBITUARY **
SFC (Retired) Matthew Thompkins, Sr. quietly and peacefully slipped away Sunday morning, February 28, 1988.
He was born on November 22, 1911, in McCormick, South Carolina to the late Pierce and Sarah (Holmes) Thompkins.
He was a member of the Pierce Grove Baptist Church, Martinez, Georgia. He was a member of the Deacon Board and the Usher Board.
Survivors include his wife, Janie Dixon Thompkins; four sons, Matthew Thompkins, Jr. and Pierce Thompkins both of Augusta, Ga., Paul Thompkins and Edwin Thompkins both of Martinez, Ga.; three daughters, Jannette Thompkins Sweeper and George Lillian Thompkins both of Augusta and Georgia Vivian Thompkins Worthen, Atlanta, Ga.; two brothers, Henry Thompkins and Rev. Stewart Thompkins both of Augusta, Ga.; a sister, Rachael Collins, Charlotte, N.C.; fifteen grandchildren, Wayne, Alisa, Mark, Yolanda, Vickey, Paul, Melody, Delgracia, Alvin and Alving Thompkins, Hank and Michael Sweeper, Tony and Cheryl Worthen and Benita Thomas; eleven great grandchildren; special nieces, Lunnette Brigham and Stephanie Matthews; two sisters-in-law, Carrie Dixon and Barbara Thompkins; three brothers-in-law, William Dixon, Jr., Martinez, Ga., William Neal, Greensboro, N.C. and Edward Lewis, Augusta, Ga.; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

I have it! My fears are going, going, gone! I feel a mysterious, calm, quiet, tranquil assurance rising deep within my being. This remarkable spirit of courage is overpowering me.
