Elizabeth Griffin Thomasifwasffiorn January IB, 1022, to the^iate Herman and Daisy Griffin in Barnwell County, South Carolina. She departed this life on January 10, 2007, atjMt. Vernon Hospital, Mt. Vernon, .NewYork. She was the next to eldest of 12 children.
Elizabeth camtjto know the Lord-at a very young age. It was a mandate in the Griffin household to attend both Sunday School and the Baptist Young People'sSHnion (BYPU) at,Mt. Calvary Baptist Church in Augusta! Georgia, where she was later baptiz|d. She looked forward to gathering the* neighborhood children tofwalk them to Sunday School.
Elizabeth, affectionately known asgjf "Betty," attended C.T. Walker pulblic and Ijainis Institute in Augiika, Georgia. She graduated trom this private schbol in 1038 apd entered * Barbara Scfbtia College in Concord, NC. After a short'stay she transferred to Florida Normal Industrial Institute op a full basketbajl scholarship. Her game name was "Jumpin Jack." but y. after completing French classes she' M became known as `Laura.' H en # , 1 Betty's 1942 diploma from Florida Normal Industrial Institute (now Florida A&M University) readSv `Laujp Elizabeth Griffih.'
Betty received her Bachelor of Science from Brooklyn College in 1966; her major was H om e;i Eltonomics; permanent certificate area was Home Economics and ChiM Care Services in 1976; and her 4 ..Masters from Hunter Coliege in l 9 p f
.After graduating from Florida Normal Industrial Institute, Elizabeth relocated to New York and united/in, marriage with her high school sweetheart, William Joseph Thpmas (a.k.a. "WJ")'-. November 8J1942, at Gethsemanfe Baptist Church, Bronx, NY! T6 thife union, six children were born, William Joseph Thomas, Jr. (deceased), Nixon Dean Thomj&s 1 (deceased), Eric Algernon Thofnas, Antone Herman Thomas, Lynbeth Jhomas-Wiggs, and Normearlepsa ThomasJackson. In the early 1950s Betty was veky active^in the community. She loved'working with peopje of all ages.jShe produced, directed, and sometimes commentated several . fashion shows in the Crotona Park'-' fpectibh, cM ie Bronx.
In the mid-1950s, the Thomas family relocated to the Wakefield section o f ; the Bronx.. After the birth of her two daughters, she taught at Soundview Nursery Schbol for approximately Klyears. Elizabeth always encouraged ^everyone tdifurther his or her (education. This motivated her to go back to school and complete her *: college education. Oliville Junior High Schobl of the Bronx welcomed her in 1966. Living, working, and attending church in the same neighborhood, shdwas a community staple.
The Thomas family united with Laconia Presbyt<$pan Church. Hizabeth was very active with the titb Ministry. Then grounded themselves at Trinity Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Carter then Rev. Dr. Nathaniel TylerLloyd (both deceased) and presently Rev. Naomi Tyler-Lloyd. WJ and Betty kboth sensed in the Senior Choir for w e r 40 year$. During that time she held the office of Sec%mry and 2 teims as President. Bettpfas Past Worthy Matron 1971 & 1973 and an active member of the Prince Hall 1"1 .MasOnic r|emple Eastern Star, mem ber of the Key Women of |Amdrica National and local chapters, until death.
