Deacon LaFayette Adams Stewart, Sr. was bom on
September 8, 1955 in Augusta, Georgia to the union of Rufus and Fannie Stewart.
He was a dedicated and faithful member of Carpentersville Baptist Church. At an early age, he accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior. He was ordained as a Deacon in 1985. He served as an Usher and sang with the Carpentersville Mass Choir and Male Chorus, and was a member of the Carpentersville Brotherhood.
LaFayette was a 1973 graduate of LBC High School. He received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration from Voorhees College, Denmark, SC and his Masters Degree in Education from Cambridge University, Boston, Massachusetts. He was a December 2003 degree candidate for his Educational Specialist Degree from South Carolina State University.
Deacon Stewart, affectionately called Lamb, La, Coach and Toe will be remembered as a very friendly, outgoing person, very sensitive to the needs of others and always willing to help when and where needed. His love and compassion for others was demonstrated not only in his daily life, but also in his profession. He had a zeal for assisting the elderly, he enjoyed visiting and lending a helping hand. No one was a stranger that came in contact with Deacon Stewart. He was indeed a role model to many.
LaFayette started his career in the business field. He was employed with Transco Textile Company and Barclays America Company. Later, he was employed with the Richmond County Board of Education, Augusta, Georgia. At the time of his demise, he was teaching and coaching at Glenn Hills High School in Augusta, Georgia. He was a man who was strong in his commitment to education and had a deep love and compassion for his students and athletes. He was an advocate and a mentor for all children. Throughout his life he encouraged them not to give up on their dreams and to be the best they can be.
LaFayette was a member of the NEA (National Educational Association), Georgia Educational Association, Richmond County Educational Association, Georgia High School Association, North Augusta Chapter of Jack and Jill, Inc. and CSRA Voorhees Alumni Chapter. He was a member of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.
On Wednesday, October 29, 2003, LaFayette peacefully made his transition from this life into the presence of the God he so lovingly trusted and he leaves to cherish and celebrate his life: Ms loving and devoted wife, Ruby Alston Stewart of 25 years; two daughters, Latrice Stewart, North Augusta, SC, Fahnie Shaw and son-in-law, Atiba Shaw, Jacksonville, NC; one son, LaFayette Adams Stewart, Jr., Jefferson City TN; his parents, Rufus and Fannie Stewart, North Augusta, SC; his adorable granddaughter, Zaire Jaylin Shaw, Jacksonville, NC; one adopted brother, Johnnie Stephens, North Augusta, SC; eleven aunts and uncles and their spouses; John (Carrie) Lamback, Jearlyn Barnes, Christine (William) Chandler, Melba Garrett, Hattie Stewart and Dorothy (Frank) Roberson all of North Augusta, SC, Louise (Willie) Green, Bath, SC, Charles (Judy) Lamback, Sr., Augusta, GA, Alfonso (Maty) Lamback, Sr., Aiken, SC, Horace (Gwendolyn) Lamback, Sr., Martinez, GA, Clara Lamback, Alexandria, VA, and Catherine (Nathaniel) James, Detroit, MI; four great aunts, Albertha Stephens, Sally Collins, Thelma Taylor and Marie Key, all of North Augusta, SC; two great uncles, Rev. Nathaniel (Jean) Irvin, North Augusta, SC and Tom Irvin, of New York; brothers and sisters-inlaw, Vernell (Albert) Bodley, Willie J.
