** OBITUARY **
Having heard and heeded the call of his Master, Deacon James L. Starks, Sr. departed this life on Thursday, July 24, at Miami General Hospital, Miami, Florida. He was born May 1, 1897 in South Richmond County. His family moved to Augusta and he attended the public schools of this city.
As a young man during World War I he worked at the Navy Yard in Philadelphia, Pa. When the War ended, he returned to Augusta, joined Tabernacle Baptist Church where he was baptized by Dr. Charles T. Walker. He was joined in matrimony to the late Richardine Wiley. To this union two children were born: James L. Starks, Jr. and Evelyn Starks. He was employed in 1919 by the Pilgrim Health & Life Insurance Co., faithfully first as an agent and later as District Manager of the Augusta Branch for forty-one years. He retired in 1960.
He loved his Church dearly, serving as a member of the Board of Deacons, President of the Baptist Training Union and in the Senior Choir.
He moved to Miami in 1970, he became affiliated immediately with the Mt. Zion Baptist Church of that city. Because he rendered the same devotion and service he had rendered at Tabernacle he was elected to the Board of Deacons under the Pastorate of Rev. Joseph Graham. Because he loved the people, Deacon Starks made lasting friends with people of all races, creeds and stations in life. One of his favorite sayings was " Kill `em with kindness."
He leaves to mourn his passing, one son, James L. Starks, Jr.; a devoted daughter-in-law, Emma Starks, Augusta, Ga.; one daughter, Evelyn Starks, Miami, Fla.; two grandchildren, Leonard and Aliciadine Starks, Augusta, Ga.; devoted and caring cousins, Mrs. Emma Brassfield, Mrs. Verma Bryant, Mrs. Freddie Prescott, Miami, Fla., Mrs. Rosa Johnson, Mrs. Freida Scott, Augusta, Ga. and a host of other relatives and sorrowing friends.
