Legacy of Love
A wife, a mother, a grandma too, this is the legacy we have from you. You taught us love and how to fight, you gave us strength, you gave us might. A stronger person would be hard to find, and in your heart, you were always kind. You foughtfor us all in one way or another, notjust as a wife notjust as a mother. For all ofusyou gaveyour best, now the time has come foryou to rest. So go in peace, youve earned your sleep, your love in our hearts, well eternally keep.
Love Always, Brent, Gail 3d Quanda

Most people called her Mrs. Southward, others, including her devoted husband "Bern" called her Cille. But everybody called her "friend". Lucille T. Southward truly cared about people, about her friends and especially about her family. She dared to love life and lived each day to the fullest, and thus, life was good to her and she was a happy woman.
Ludlle Thompkim Southward was born February 22,1918 in Augusta, GA. She was one offour children born to the late Peter Thompkins and Lula Searson Thompkins. Three brothers: Frederick Thompkins, William Thompkins, and Henry Thompkins preceded her in death.
Lucille received her elementary and high school education from Haines Institute in Augusta, GA. She went on after graduation to obtain certifications in stenography, shorthand, and typing. While she never pursued occupations in thesefields, throughout her life, Lucille heldpositions as substitute teacher and a crossingguard, but her most important job to her family was as a domestic engineer.
Married to the late Bernard Morrison Southward, Sr., she loved to travel, entertain, and attend social gatherings with her beloved husband, fam ily, andfriends. Lucille often helped her husband caterfunctions on weekends at Harvey Davis Place, where people would come from miles around to taste her cole slaw, BBQ ribs, and chitterlings. For most of this would seem like work, but for her it was just another enjoyable opportunity to gather with friends and associates. Throughout her life time, Lucille was also a member of the Haines Alumni Association, The Sportsmens Boat Club, and the Neighborhood Club. She was also a devoted member of the "DONT YOU WISH YOU KNEW (DYWYK) Bridge Club, where in earlier years, she would be found playing cards twice a week with her closest friends. Lucille also enjoyed attending the festive activities of the annual Pennomans Winter Fest.
Lucille was mother to four children: James L. Walker, Louise Walker, Bernard M. Southward, Jr., and Freder ick H. Southward, all of which preceded her in death. She was a life-long member of the Historic Springfield Baptist Church, where she was baptized at the young age of eleven. After a full life of laughing, listening, advising, helping, and loving, she was called into rest on February 15, 2008 at 2:20 am.
While Lucille Southward may be gone from our midst, memories of her will linger. Each memory, individu ally unique, will be warm and comforting, often bringing smiles to our faces in the years to come. She will be deeply m issed by all who knew and lover her.
She leaves to cherish her memory: three grandchildren, Brent Walker (Angela), Saungaylia Southward-Randolph (Kendall) and Quanda Southward; her loving daughter-in-law, Betty S. Walker; seven greatgrandchildren, Brittany Walker, Brianna Walker, Kendall Randolph, Jalen Randolph, Kaila Randolph, Kaia Randolph and Courtney Tankersley; one niece, Phoebe Southward AH; dearfriends, Samuela Chiles, Corrine Warren and Thelma Mack; caretaker, Ruby Hammond; a host of beloved relatives and friends.

Lord, make me an instrument of Thy peace; where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; and where there is sadness, joy.
O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek
to be consokd as to console; to be understood, as to understand;
to be loved, as to love; for it is in giving that we receive, it is in pardoning that we are pardoned, it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
... St. Francis of Assist

A place is vacant in our home, a voice we love is still An emptiness within our hearts, the world can never fill, But thanks to friends like you, who have helped to ease our pain, with kind expressions and words of comfort, we can lift our heads above our sorrows ... with loving memories tucked deep within our hearts. May God bless and keep every one of you in His loving care. ~ The Family
