In tears we saw you sinking and watching you fade away, our hearts were almost broken
we wanted you to stay, but when we saw you sleeping so peacefully free from pain, how could we wish you back with us to suffer the pain again, It broke our hearts to lose you
but you did not go alone, for part of us was with you

On March 12, 2014 at 4:30 a.m. God sent his loving Angel to call our loved one home from Thompson Maner Rehab Center. Mrs. Mary Frances Tutt Smithson: a mother , grandmother, great grandmother, aunt, friend. Mary Frances was born on January 21, 1940 in Augusta, Georgia to the late Elam and Mamie Tutt Bigham. She was the granddaughter of the late Fred Tutt Sr.
Mary Frances "Fran" attended public school in Richmond County and was a Lucy Laney graduate. She also attended Pain College.
At an early age, she was baptized at Olivet Baptist Church and served as a Senior Usher. Mary had a daughter, Debra, after college whom she loved dearly. Mary was joined in holy matrimony to the late William Johnson Sr. and they had one child, Richard. Mary was a devoted step-mother to William's children, Angela, William Jr., Tonya, Steven, Robert, and Kenneth.
Later, Mary left Augusta and made Richmond, Virginia her second home. She then was joined in holy matrimony to the late Arthur J. Smithson, who adopted Debra and Richard. She pursued a career as a lab tech at the Medical College of Virginia for 30 years. She continued working for the Lord and joined Trinity Baptist Church and served as President of the Senior Usher Board until her health failed.
She leaves to cherish her memory her daughter, Debra (Charles) Fields; son, Richard (Sheila) Smithson; three grandchildren, Sean, Nicholas, DeMarcus; five extended grandchildren, four god children, Mary, Jadera, Mann, and Patricia; a dearly loved aunt, Alberta Tutt; favorite nephews, Mack and Jerry; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
