JAMES SMITH, the youngest son of the late James Smith and Jennie Lanhammith, was born on August 31, 1929, in Jacksonville, Florida
The family moved to Augusta, Georgia and Jim was baptized at Antioch Baptist Church He attended Richmond County Schools and later moved to New York.
Jim served in the Korean War and received the Purple Heart.
On June 12, 1955, Jim married the love of his life, Bernice Varlack This union lasted fifty-one years and truer words were never spoken, "until death do we part."
In 1990, Jim retired from the United States Postal Service. He partici pated in a number of organizations including the National Association of Letter Carriers, the VFW, American Legion and the DAV.
After returning to the Augusta area in 1976, he joined the Mt. Calvary Baptist Church and became an active member of the E.A. Moss Choir.
His memory will be remembered and cherished by: his devoted and loving wife, Bernice Varlack Smith of North Augusta, South Carolina, daughters, Diane (J.P.) Elliott of College Park, Georgia, Sheila Smith of North Augusta, South Carolina and Lande Matthews of New York; sons, James A Smith, Raymond M. (Patrix) Smith of Lithonia, Geor gia, Linwood Ardis of Augusta, Georgia and Joseph Scott of California; sisters, Mary Way of Augusta, Georgia, Irene (Nathan) Thomas of Bronx, New York and Clotme Kirkland of Kissimmee, Florida, grand children, Walter and Michael Clark, Ragina, Reigha and Rachelle Smith, Jennifer Glass, Terrell Ardis and Kristian Scott; nieces, Rosalyn Panton, Veronica Way, Angie Kirkland and Bonnie (Mike) Byrne; and a host of other relatives and friends
