OBITUARY
Judge Wfflie T. Smith, Jr. 82, of 601 Jacobs Road, died Tuesday, December 17, 2002 at St. Francis Hospital after several years of declining health. The son of the late Willie T. Smith, Sr. and Mary Moore Smith, he was born in Sumter on January 17, 1920. He was reared in Columbia where he attended public schools. He graduated from Johnson C. Smith University, A.B., 1948, and South Carolina State College of Law, LLB, 1954, which converted to J.D. in 1976.

Smith served in the U.S. Army during World War II and in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Con flict. After returning to civilian life, he began his private law practice. He also served as cooperating attorney for the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, Inc.

While working with the NAACP, his dedication to the Civil Rights Movement led him to try cases

which desegregated Greenville County public schools and lunch counters. He was in the Harvey Gantt case which led to the desegregation of Clemson University.

Smith later served as senior attorney for Legal Services of Greenville from 1967-1973 and Executive Di rector from 1973-1977. He was elected Family Court Judge for the Thirteenth Judicial Circuit of South Caro lina by unanimous vote of the General Assembly of the state.

He was a member of the American Bar Association, South Carolina Bar and National Council ofJuve

nile and Family Court Judges.

Omega Psi Phi Man of the Year; Humanitarian Award-Greenville County Human Relation Commission; John son C. Smith Outstanding Alumnus Award; Order of the Palmetto and the Alpha Phi Alpha Martin Luther King Freedom Award. He was elected to the South Carolina Black Hall of Fame in 1994 and received the Co lumbia Lawyers Association Matthew J. Perry Medallion in 1996. He was included in the BellSouth 1999 Afri can American History Calendar.

He is survived by his wife, Anna Clark Smith of the home; one son, Willie T. Smith, III, of Simpson-
